4. Todays future teachers, for the most part, are
digitalnatives, individuals who grew up with technology as apart of
their personal lives but not their educationallives. Even though
our future teachers are digitalnatives, their learning experiences
in k - 12 have notincluded integrated digital age instruction
orcontemporary technologies but rather, traditionaleducation that
requires text based, rote responselearning without technology.
5. It is difficult for future teachers to imagine teaching
environments where allstudents have mobile tablets for learning
such as the Apple ipad. The ideathat their students may be located
at a distance is not part of their idea ofwhat they will do as a
teacher. Again, students own learning experiencesdid not include
integrated technology for teaching and learning. It isimportant
then, that teacher education programs can deliver theirinstruction
using contemporary technologies to model for new teachers what21st
century teaching looks like, technology integrated, often offered
at adistance and student rather than teacher centered.
