NAME: JOE AGE: 12 HOMETOWN: ESSEX“I’M LUCKY TO BE ALIVE”I’ve always loved being outdoors and riding my mountain bike but one evening nearly changed my life for ever. It was a lovely summer evening in my last term at junior school when I rode out between two parked cars and was hit by a car. It was only going 30 kmph but the wing mirror hit me in the leg, it flipped me over and I landed on my head. I wasn’t wearing a cycling helmet. I had some broken bones and severe head injuries that made me spent over a year in a special unit at a hospital. I couldn’t talk so I had to learn to talk again. Now I am back at school but I know I am lucky to be alive. My accident was much worse because I wasn’t wearing a helmet, so I hope that if you read this, you’ll wear a helmet from now on!
