Time and again we have heard exhibitors, speakers and visitors talk of the event’s relevance to them and their business; the power of networking at OI; and the fact that they meet their key clients, suppliers, technical advisers and, crucially, make new business contacts too. This all adds up to them being able to create and maintain relationships; find out what the latest developments are in the sectors they serve, and ensure that their products and services match both current and future needs.

Many spoke too of the quality of the audience; how busy the event was; and the fact that this brings together the entire industry – business, academia, and end-users. This year we attracted higher attendance from countries such as China and Russia – and this was also remarked upon.

Sales for the 2014 event are currently 27% ahead of the previous event, which speaks volumes in itself. We look forward to welcoming you to oceanology international 2014.

James Coleman Exhibition Director Oceanology International Reed Exhibitions

The Oceanology International 2012 statistics speak for themselves. We are delighted to have produced such a successful outcome for this year’s event – something we couldn’t have achieved without our exhibitors, conference committee, speakers, visitors and supporting organisations.

“The Society for Underwater Technology has been associated with Oceanology International almost from its very beginning, more than forty years ago. Walking around the exhibition floor during OI 2012, it was evident to me that this showcase has become the world leader for ocean science and technology.

“We were delighted to be able to bring uuvS, our Unmanned Underwater Vehicles showcase, under the ‘umbrella’ of OI 2012. It played to a packed room. It was clear from that first day’s session speakers – which included Fugro, Kongsberg, Subsea 7 and others – that the industry is now mature and working globally.

dr bob allwood Chief Executive, SUT

“Oceanology International arrives every two years and provides a special opportunity to assemble all facets of the industry who work in marine technology and ocean science to discuss the latest technological advances and challenges; view the latest equipment; and observe how the market is changing. Oceanology International 2012 was certainly no exception, with more exhibitors and visitors - and a special increase of those from China and the Far East.

“Indeed, the whole event sends one away with enthusiasm about all that is going on – it undoubtedly whets appetites and fills one with enthusiasm for meeting again in March 2014.”

hugh williams Chief Executive, IMCA

“Oceanology International is highly relevant to our 15,000 members around the globe – every one of the conference streams had relevance to large numbers of them, and the exhibition and networking events provided a marvellous occasion for meeting our Marine Partners, members, and potential members.”

david loosley Chief Executive, IMarEST

THE SUPPORTING ORGANISATIONS’ VIEWS

“Oceanology International is an ideal place to network and build relationships with suppliers and clients, associates and industry representatives; and it provides us with a good platform to create awareness and showcase the range of capabilities and expertise that Fugro offers across the global group.

“The show provides a relaxed and informal environment in which to meet with both existing and potential clients. This year we chalked up a large number of fruitful meetings in a short space of time, obtaining good leads for potential work.

“There are three other great advantages of exhibiting biennially at Oceanology International. First it provides an opportunity to gain an overview of market requirements and expectations; secondly, it is a good place

to recruit staff – both graduates and experienced staff; and thirdly, it is the ideal place to launch new initiatives to the industry.

“At Oceanology International 2012, with the University of Plymouth, we successfully launched the Hydrographic Academy, a project employing some of the latest concepts and technology in distance and online learning for the hydrographic surveying industry.

“Last, but certainly not least, we were pleased to be able to celebrate the award of the Alan Greig Memorial Prize for Outstanding Contribution to commercial Oceanography to Garry Mardell, Fugro GEOS’s recently retired Operations Director.

“We are already looking forward to OI 2014!”

“It is a show that does exactly what we expect it to do, it is the biggest that Saab Seaeye do, so we need to ensure that it works hard for us. During it I, and members of the team, spoke to a lot of people who want to buy ROVs for their oil and gas interests – this is the premier show for these conversations. Some 80% of our business is in the oil and gas industry and Oceanology International certainly keeps us in the forefront of their minds. It is without doubt the world’s leading subsea show; this year, thanks to

the appointment of a military specialist we saw a number of military contacts too.

“What next? Well, we will certainly be back, and what I would like to see is more of the people that we don’t necessarily know – those representing a wide range of fringe interests, such as super yachts and the paramilitary; more military personnel would be a bonus; and potential users of ROVs for a vast range of perhaps more unusual tasks.

“More sales of ROVs means more business for a host of the other suppliers who exhibit at the show – those selling things like launch and recovery systems; cranes, and cameras, so new levels of visitor will undoubtedly mean more business for a wide range of exhibitors.

“We use Oceanology International to help our staff understand what is going on in the industry, bringing them up from the factory by coach each day, and rotating the staff who work on the stand too.

“We are all looking forward to Oceanology International 2014!”

“It is still the single largest event in the energy and marine calendar where we can meet the development people important to us; after all, it is very much devoted to our sector and our clients. As far as ROI goes, it is one of the premier events in our calendar! We certainly did business at the show and are continuing to deal with, and do, business generated there.

“I love the atmosphere – as you walk round the show there can be an industry ‘giant’ on one side of you, and there on a small 3x3 stand can be a new ‘start-up’ company – the general breadth and range of exhibitors and visitors it attracts is unmatched. We need that breadth and range because the rapidly moving, and changing, industry constantly needs new technology, and new blood with innovative ideas. I’ve invited guests to the show in the past just to enable them to sense the ‘Oceanology International feel’.

“Oceanology International keeps on demonstrating every two years that there is a demand for a show of its size and scale. It’s hard to beat and interesting to see it once again spreading its wings geographically and into different sectors. There is plenty of scope to grow too, for increasingly

more sectors need our expertise; we are seeing a widget used in one sector, say the defence industry, that has relevance in another, for example the Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) markets. Indeed we have developed technology with maritime security in mind, that is currently being redesigned and trialled for the detection of hydrocarbon leaks in deep water. It is by coming together at events like Oceanology International that we can network, learn and discover new markets.

“The conference sessions also help this learning process, and I was delighted to chair a maritime security session at this year’s Oceanology International – it is good to see an increasing number of people attend these sessions.

“We are greatly looking forward to OI 2014!”

“OI 2012 was a great success for us, meeting all of our objectives. These were to promote the forthcoming launch of our products and services; meet with visiting target launch customers, and provide great hospitality on the stand; present and demonstrate the products, the corporate vision, objectives,

philosophies and our approaches to product development; and our business overall. We obtained firm commitments for trials and demonstration visits and captured the interest of the wider potential customer base.”

It was the first time we have ever sold anything off the stand!

“We had positive feedback from our C-Nav positioning, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle and Marine Construction divisions. It also gave us the opportunity to showcase our new sister company, ASV, who specialise in Surface Autonomous Vehicles. They generated a lot of interest in their new surface catamaran, which we had on display.

“Exhibiting certainly helps us meet people – there are always new start-up companies that visit the stand who are interested in our products. What’s more, it is also good to meet people I have been communicating with via email for a few years, but have never met.

“We gained new business too. One of our clients bought a 3050 receiver and needed it the next day, so we let him have the one we were using as a demonstrator at the show. It was the first time we have ever sold anything off the stand!

“For the first two days we had a steady stream of people enquiring about the new 3050 receiver. On the last day, when it was a little quieter we all managed to get off the stand to talk to other exhibitors and see what new developments there are out there.

“It certainly did the job. We will be back in 2014.”

We had numerous serious business discussions and gave a great many demonstrations

“Most of our customers are researchers and academics with protracted decision making processes. Naturally we track progress during this process but often

it can take as long as a year. No quick ‘off-the-stand’ sales for us!

“Interest was extremely high and we had numerous serious business discussions and gave a great many demonstrations, that we are confident will ultimately lead to new business.

“We also took the opportunity to gather our global network of representatives and agents together. We have a large ‘Aanderaa family’. We hold launches, lunches, meetings and are busy demonstrating applications and holding presentations for them.

“This year we had an additional message to promote – we joined forces with the Xylem Group and are part of an even larger family now. We used Oceanology International to reinforce this message and to meet with our sister companies YSI/SONTEK who were also exhibiting.

“Again Oceanology International proved highly successful and we look forward the next one.”

Oceanology International hosts seven conferences focusing on key industries as well as technologies and disciplines.

The seven conferences enabled the sharing of knowledge and experience across industries, geographies and disciplines, bringing end-users, service providers and equipment and component manufacturers together, with one thought in mind – solving the challenges of their sector of the industry.

The conference certainly lived up to expectations with packed rooms and great levels of discussion for the seven streams. All showcasing the latest scientific and technological developments and the benefits they can provide, each conference stream succeeded in providing an excellent opportunity for Oceanology International attendees to interact with others from their specialist discipline or application area and to learn how the technologies showcased in the exhibition hall were being used to deliver exciting new capabilities.

On the eve of OI 2012 there was a one day scene-setting conference at the Royal Institution of Great Britain – Catch the Next Wave – looking at the link between the ocean technologies and disruptive technologies that are likely to change the way things are done in the marine sphere. This brought together leading world authorities on particular disruptive technologies alongside their counterparts who are starting to apply those technologies in the marine environment.

One of the great advantages of holding Oceanology International at ExCeL is that vessels can be moored alongside the exhibition hall, and demonstrations held in the water and on the quayside.

The Sea Echo gave us a real opportunity to promote the C-Products range of equipment. For the two days we were using her, all visits were fully booked.

The team at Oceanology International went out of their way to accommodate us. It was very last minute on our side and everyone involved – RODMA and the organisers – could not have done more to look after us. Highly recommended!John bartle EGS Survey

Ten vessels and a remote controlled boat visited the show; and during the course of the event 380 people visited FS Borda, the French Navy survey vessel of the Laperouse Class; and close on 800 visited the smaller vessels to see waterborne demonstrations of their onboard equipment.
