A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

Welcome to the May newsletter. Please express your appreciation to Janice Jacques, our Newsletter editor, when you run into her. I hear from many members about their enjoyment of the new format and content of the newsletter, with the emphasis on our individual members. I pass on the compliments but please take a moment to say personally thanks personally to Janice when you see her. Also, if you have suggestions on how she can make even more improvements, please give her your ideas, she welcomes feedback. I just returned from our annual picnic at Edison Park. The weather turned out to be excellent, and we had a nice turnout and we had fun. Thanks go to our BBQ masters Sue Arnold and Paul Montesanto, and our game organizers Kathie Thompson and Teri Sulser. Also, thanks to Keith Johnson and “Big Mike” who aided us in the set-up. And special thanks to all the members who provided the eats, it was good a good event! I was asked by a member at the picnic how I liked my duties and what was it that I liked about our OCMC members. That was easy to answer. I love our members because they are “down to earth” and not arrogant about themselves or their cars. They are hard-working people who like to have fun in their leisure time. That is why I joined this club and not others. So, it is easy to try and give back and keep the OCMC up and running. Thanks to the membership for allowing me to do this. The elected Board members have approved the new bylaws, and the signed final edition is posted on the website for all to see. The current Board will function as it does now, and full implementation will begin in the next election cycle, beginning in October. We received a suggestion from Herb Lakin which we incorporated into the bylaws, so thanks to Herb. Otherwise, we received no other suggestions or specific criticism before we voted to approve the change. I thank the elected Board for the unanimous vote, as the bylaws change was my first priority during my term. The new bylaws will insure the vitality of the OCMC for the years to come. We have a new plan for our charity giving, and there will be an application and selection process which will result in the naming of the charities we will fund. The application process will begin in May and we intend to announce the charities at the July or August meeting. I will explain the process and schedule at the May general meeting. Vice President Paul, has done a super job in lining up speakers and events for May and June. He has put together an excellent program for the North Meets South Poker Run on May 18. I will be out-of-state for that event, so everyone help Paul out, attend, and have a great run and fun! I’ll see you all at the June 12 general meeting. Craig Kamansky President OCMC

Get to Know Member: Ivan Thompson 4-16-19

Ivan is the proud owner of a silver 2017 Mustang GT, California Special edition. It has a 5.0 liter engine with 435 HP. He says it’s special because he got it with the features he wanted and for the price he wanted to pay. He chose this model because of the styling and the proven technology, and as he says, the right price. Something most of us probably don’t know about Ivan is that he used to compete in Shotokan (Okinawa) style of karate. He placed 3rd nationally in 1996 and 6th in 1997. The message here—don’t mess with Ivan! He joined OCMC to meet new friends, learn about car events and become involved in more activities, his favorite being the cruises. He encourages everyone to get out there and enjoy your Mustangs. He says, “Some people never drive their pride and joy and later regret they didn’t.” Good advice, Ivan!

“IT’S NOT MY JOB” This is a story about 4 people named ANYBODY, EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY and NOBODY. There was an important job to be done and EVERYBODY was sure that SOMEBODY would do it.

ANYBODY could have done it, but NOBODY did it. SOMEBODY got angry about that, because it was

EVERYBODY’S job. EVERYBODY thought ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY realized that EVERYBODY wouldn’t do it. It

ended up that EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY when NOBODY did what ANYBODY could have done!!!

“Outlaw” Frank Valdez

Story starts when on my way home (very short commute/2 miles) I saw a Rio Red Mustang with a Saleen Body Kit. I thought recently about buying another car to drive around town since I just parted out a 98 Mustang GT and thought and a cheap manual fixer upper mustang would be perfect. Budget was around 1500 for something running, driving and relatively stock. The car was sitting in a lot in front of a liquor store with the for-sale sign in the front window and 1900 dollars written on it. I called the number on the sign and a man representing the car showed up from a smog shop around the corner. He said the car was recently registered and had passed smog with flying colors but did have a few issues. Driver side window didn’t work without help, the odometer didn’t turn any more, coolant sensor didn’t work, ABS light was on, fuel gauge did not work, the car had no A/C, the car was stuck at 200k miles, and the paint was in pretty bad shape but Rio Red is a nice color when new. And most of all it was not preferred but it was automatic. It did have Maximum Motorsports Caster/Camber plates, an upgraded air filter, and Eibach lowering springs. The car needed help but drove fine especially for my short commute to work. A week later I bought the car for 1700 after dealing with some titling issues but it was mine. First fix was the odometer and coolant temp sensor. These cars are notorious for having broken odometer gears since the plastic gears eventually destroy themselves due to heat and wear. So, after a quick trip online to lmr.com, 25 bucks and a half hour later hour I got them, I installed new odometer gears which got the odometer and trip meter working perfectly. Next, I took a trip to the junkyard and found another 95 Mustang (didn’t matter if it was a V6) and removed the gauge cluster. Cost me 27 bucks with tax. I swapped out the V6 fuel and coolant temp piece and voila. I could see my coolant temp finally. Fuel gauge still didn’t work but I was good with my knowing the car wasn’t overheating. Within a couple weeks of driving the car I realized the transmission was just about on its way out. Sometimes it would hang for 5 seconds at about 4K RPM before it decided to shift. Other times it would shift from 3rd to 2nd and then finally to 4th. That was annoying and it got real old real fast. I then thought it can’t be incredibly difficult to swap these from auto to manual transmission. The 95 Mustang GT also ran the Tremec T5 behind the motor and I had previously rebuilt my T5 on my ‘04 V6. Come April of 18 my brother decided to sell the 04 Mustang V6 (My First Mustang) that had a blown motor back to me. It was the perfect donor for my new 95 which had a lot of parts are direct fit for. I had done a lot of modifications to the car including H and R SS lowering springs, an 8.8” rear end completely rebuilt with 3.55 gears, a completely rebuilt T5 transmission, new suspensions components throughout, OEM Mach 1 wheels and the entire interior out of a 03 - 04 Mach 1. Huge score for my project car. I ended up installing all of the front suspension components, new H and R Race Springs, new 13” front cobra brake calipers and the entire interior from the 03 – 04 Mach 1 with a slight modification to the power seat connector. A couple weeks after that I noticed a very low mile IRS out of a 03 Cobra for sale in Huntington Beach. I really wanted a backup unit in case something broke in my 01. I bought the IRS and decided I could swap it into the 95 with only a few modifications. In order to install the IRS, I fabricated new brake lines from the hard line at the rear, installed cobra specific rear calipers, updated the driveshaft flange to bolt up properly to the IRS with new U-Joint, and had a buddy weld the support brackets in to make it a permanent addition. I got the car down from the jack stands and the rear end ran perfect. It even had taller gearing already built in (3.73 rear gears) so I got a little bump in acceleration. I was pretty happy with my work but I still wanted more power and three pedals to go with it. At this point a well-known Mustang scrapper in the Inland Empire had recently acquired a 95 Cobra that he was parting out which had lots of upgrades. I ended up picking up a set of GT40 Heads, 94-95 Cobra intake, a BBK 75 mm Throttle Body, and a Steeda 1-3/8” Diameter Front Sway Bar. I found out later the heads had a crack which made me change directions on the cobra intake manifold. After talking with a popular engine builder, I decided I wanted to push 400 hp at the flywheel similar to what my C6 corvette was putting out but still naturally aspirated. I ended up buying a set of TFS 170 cc Heads and a matching TFS Street Burner Intake. The heads and intake ended up being sold in as is condition for a small loss but it’s unavoidable when building a project car. Plus, side of running the TFS heads is the loss of nearly 50 pounds in weight as compared with the GT40 iron heads and they flowed significantly better with CARB approval. I really wanted this car to have as much power as my C6 Corvette and just as much handling capability all contained in a ragged shell of a car. At this point the project stalled a little and, in an effort, to make a little more cash, I decided to buy a run down 95 Cobra that was being sold for a great price and in relatively good condition. All of the parts are pretty much sought after on these cars and can easily be filled for a good chuck of change. I tore it apart saving all of the interior parts for myself and then selling every other component on the car. During the teardown searching Craiglist one day, I found a freshly rebuilt 302 out of a 95 with the Trick Flow Top End Kit installed and only 10 miles from my house. The engine literally had all the components I had sitting on a shelf already installed and running. I contacted the owner and went right after work to hear it running in his Shelby Cobra Kit Car. The car sounded amazing and had just a little bit of lope from the installed Trick Flow Cam. A week later I had the motor loaded up on a truck and in route to my house. I had everything I need to build the track car that I wanted. Two weeks after I got the motor, I started the process of removing and installing the new motor. I rebuilt a T5 transmission 100% complete from a deal I got on Facebook with all new synchros and wearable items. After the trans was built, I pulled the 200k plus mile boat anchor from the car. I then started to make additions to the already built motor including a new set of BBK Chrome Shorty Headers, a new clutch and flywheel combo capable of 350 HP at the wheels, and my newly rebuilt transmission. Installing the new motor was way easier than I though and I did it myself in about an hour in my garage. After the motor was installed, I attacked the interior with new carpet and I swapped all of the interior pieces from the 95 Cobra I parted out earlier in the year. The two tone Grey and Charcoal was not my favorite so I swapped to the all-black Cobra interior as well as the Mach 460 sound system it had installed. Finally, in Mid-April I connected all of the lines, vacuum, fuel, and electrical to the motor and fired her up. She took a little bit of tuning initially and she will take more professionally soon as well as a dyno session. I hope when she’s finally tuned in, I’ll be making somewhere around 315 RWHP and 330 RWTQ. Time will tell. Future mods to include a Tubular K-Member setup from Maximum Motorsports, upgraded bushings and components for the rear end from Maximum Motorsports, and a working A/C system. It was a lot of work but I’d honestly do it again. There is something to be said about the “Built not Bought” mentality and I can’t wait to show the results at the track soon.
