    Gods grace turns your gifts

into healed hearts and new lives.

Leaving the Light OnA word from Ed Morgan, President

    iN Their owN words:

We introduced you to Carl in the May 2007 edition ofRed Door. We

caught up with him recently at The Bowery Missions TransitionalCenter to see how hes doing. This is what he told us ...

    By Carl

before I came to the Mission, I was no good for myself, for myfamily, or my friends. I had no respect for myself or for anyoneelse. From where I was then to where I am today is like night

and day.I have been truly blessed!

I dropped out of high school in 11th grade. It looked like morefun to hang out on the streets. It turned out it wasnt much fun.

Next week Im taking the transit exam, and in a couple of monthsIll take the GED exam. Im going to ace it, I know.

After that, Ill go to college.A few months ago, I visited my old friends in the Bronx. We

spent 21 years drinking together, doing drugs and committing crimes. But we have nothing in common anymore. A voice in my head said,

Its time for you to leave.I pray for them and wish them well, but I love who I am today. I

dont wake up worried about who I might have hurt or offended lastnight. I would never change how my family looks at me now. Imnever going back.

    I am never going back.

    A specialThanksgiving message

    for you

    Dear Friend,

    When the Pilgrims celebrated the

    first Thanksgiving

    in 1621, it was

    after a year of

    tremendous

    hardship. I think

    all New Yorkers

will be feeling some of that same spirit

    when Thanksgiving 2009 arrives.

Thats why I am so grateful foryour support. You are turning your

    compassion into action by supporting

    The Bowery Mission.

    The Bowery Mission symbolizes

all thats best about Thanksgiving: a

spirit of joyfulness even among those

    in need. The indescribable blessing

of being able to serve others. The

opportunity to see the image of our

Creator in a hungry old man or a

    struggling single mom.

The Mission is a tool of Gods

    grace, turning the compassion and

generosity of good friends like you

    into healed hearts and transformed

    lives. The meals,

    counseling,

    practical care and

    love your gifts

    provide really do

    make the Mission

a place where miracles happen every

    day.

I hope you realize, Friend, whata big part you are of that, and how

    thankful we are for you!

If you are one of the fortunate

people who are able to give a little

more in these tough times, I hope you

will choose to do so. And if this has

been a year of ha rdship for you, please

know that we rejoice that you are still

    standing with us.

May you and your family have a

    blessed Thanksgiving.

    Thank you!

[Mr. and Mrs. Example], Carl is living a new life and has excitingdreams for the future because of your support of the Mission.

At the Bowery, your gifts have

helped Troy deal with his grief, get off drugs and start a new

    life.

There used to be a sign here

at the Mission, Troy says. It read,

Theres no place like this place, so this

must be the place. Thats how I feel.

This is my East Coast family.
