Harvests and Halloween
The cool October air isn’t the only thing causing a chill to run down your spine: October is Bat Month. This misunderstood animal is actually essential to the health of our natural ecosystems. There are more than 1,200 species of bats, and they all help scatter pollen, disperse seeds, and most importantly, control the insect population. One little brown bat can eat over 1,000 mosquitoes in a single hour. Three species of bats in Latin America known as vampire bats do drink blood, but they do not suck it like legends of Dracula would suggest. Rather, they lap it like cats drinking milk. Furthermore, an enzyme in the vampire bats’ saliva is one of the best blood-clot dissolvers known to science and is a powerful medicine for stroke victims.
Vampire bats come off as charming next to the hagfish, which enjoys its own holiday on October 16. Even though it more closely resembles an eel, the hagfish is often hailed as the world’s ugliest fish. Perhaps the most repugnant aspect of these creatures is the five gallons of gooey slime they release when captured or scared. This Halloween, ditch the vampire costume and dress up as a hagfish.
Not all of October is spooky. It may be no surprise that October is Pumpkin Month, but what is surprising is how healthy pumpkins are to eat. Pumpkin is an excellent source of vitamin A, potassium, and vitamin E. Carve those jack-o-lanterns but save the fruit as a healthy treat. (Yes, pumpkins are a fruit, not a vegetable!) No farm is complete without its scarecrow, but the residents of Brussels in Belgium take scarecrows to whole new heights during their October Scarecrow Festival. Massive homemade scarecrows, both merry and menacing, fill the city’s main square. Smart crows know better than to visit the city during this seasonal event.

Well Worn Jeans
Pull on your favorite pair of jeans on October 4, Denim Day. Denim is a thick cotton fabric, where the white weft thread passes under two indigo warp threads. This is what gives denim its signature blue and white color.
Blue jeans may be a signature of American fashion, but denim originated in Nimes, France. The word denim comes from the French de Nimes, which means “from Nimes.” The word jeans actually comes from the Italian city of Genoa, which was pronounced “Genes” by the French. The first denim pants were made here. Jeans have come a long way from France and Italy. Levi Strauss moved from Germany to San Francisco, California, where he sold jeans with copper rivets to workers. Ever since, blue jeans have been a mainstay of the American wardrobe.
Do you know who I am?
?
Here are some clues:
• I was born in July 1907 in Brazil—Indiana, that is.
• My father was a corn farmer.
• I was active in the local chapter of the 4-H Club.
• I graduated from high school in the top five percent of my class.
• I attended Purdue University.
• In college, I was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the marching band, and the track team.
• I graduated from Purdue University in 1928 with a degree in agronomy.
• My first job out of college was selling fertilizer.
• Eventually, I served as a county agricultural agent and managed a 12,000-acre farm.
• When I wasn’t busy working, I spent my spare time studying corn.
• In 1951, my business partner, Charlie Bowman, and I bought a seed corn plant and started developing hybrid strains of corn.
• In 1965, we developed the first genetic improvement in corn in more than 5,000 years.
• We sold packages of our corn kernels from roadside stands and the trunks of our cars.
• We marketed the corn as RedBow popcorn and never failed to make a sale.
• A Chicago marketing firm advised changing the name of our product if we wanted to sell it nationally.
• In 1970, our re-named popcorn first appeared in Chicago’s Marshall Fields store.
• In 1973, I appeared on the television show To Tell the Truth.
• In 1976, Charlie Bowman and I sold our product to Hunt-Wesson.
• I became the company spokesman for the popcorn renamed after me.
• My white wavy hair and funny-sounding name became synonymous with the gourmet popcorn I created.
• Do you know who I am? I’m sure that my name has “popped” into your mind already. Who am I? My name can be found in the word scramble below.
