Social Media and the Students
Social media is the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, micro blogging, social networking, social book-marking, social curtain, and wikis are among the different types of social media. Some prominent examples of social
media are Whatsapp, Instagram, Face book, Twitter, Google+, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, etc.
Effects of Social Media on Students
Social media is impacting students both positively and negatively. Positive practices of social media increase student's social intelligence and understanding of human behavior. Negative practices of social media make them materialistic, irate and addicted to too many undesirable habits.
However, the problem is not created by social networking websites the problems arises when we use them without analyzing what we are doing and what will be its impact on us, our family, society, and the country. In most academic institutions' cafeteria, dorm's or local hangout place, students can be found with their head down, thumbs swiping up and down or fingers tapping their phone screen checking the latest post on Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchatting their friends or seeing what's trending on Twitter. This increased presence of social media has made a profound impact on college students, both positive and negative.
Positive effects
It Facilitate Online Learning
The use of social media has helped the students to learn through various online learning platforms available to them. The use of YouTube to watch educational videos has helped the students to gain wider knowledge.
Access to Information
There are many groups that students can join through online platforms, that are related to their course of study, demographic, school, environment and much more. Joining this group on Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook and others will help the students to have access to quality information as and when needed.
It helps to Gain Wider Knowledge
Social media helps to enhance student academic performance and increase their knowledge through data and information gathering. When students are given an assignment in school, college they go through various online platforms to gather information and to find solutions to their assignment.
It helps to build Relationship
Students can get to know each other better through social media networks. It helps to bring together two or more people, where they can share their problem and can get it solved by fellow colleagues. If a student finds out that he or she is having a problem in a particular course, he or she can open up through chat and find a friend who can provide a solution.
Negative Effects:
It Wastes Time
Many students find it difficult to go about their normal life without making use of social media. It has been observed that student are not attentive in class, instead they are busy chatting and reading stories online. They waste their time chatting with friends and family; instead of reading and practicing at home what they have learned in school. Thus, students should not be carried away by social media platforms as it will affect their academic performance.
It causes social problems
Social media has created many social problems in the society. In these modern days, many students tend to choose online communication rather than having real time conversation, and this leads to a student becoming an introvert.
It Causes Health Problems
The use of computers, mobile phones, and various gadgets to access online platforms by students may harm the user if they use it for long hours frequently. Students may be exposed to bad posture, eye strain, physical and mental stress. Too much use of education technology tools for accessing social media by students is harmful and there must be a limit.
All educational stakeholders must ensure they coordinate the use of social media platforms by setting up a policy that can help to regulate the negative aspect of social media. Students must also be ready to learn and listen in the class room; they should not make chatting their priority. Students should pursue an excellent academic performance and gain adequate knowledge that will help them in the future.
Role of the parents
How can parents mitigate the negative aspects of social media while improving upon the positive results? Moderating their access to social media is one excellent method. Most of the negative aspects can be overcome by reducing the amount of time spent on social network sites. Provide ample time for face-to-face social interaction, like having family leisure time in which parent discuss their studies in a relaxed atmosphere or inviting friends and family over for cookouts. Paying attention to their academic progress and addressing any issues will go a long way towards keeping the negative aspects of social media from influencing their studies.

Died: 21 November 1970, Bangalore, India
Affiliation at the time of the award.
Calcutta University, Calcutta, India.
Prize motivation: "for his work on the
scattering of light and for the discovery
of the effect named after him".
Field: Atomic physics, electroma-gnetism.
Work: When light meets particles that
are smaller than the light's wavelength,
the light spreads in different directions.
This occurs, for example, when light
packets - photons - encounter
molecules in a gas.
In 1928 Venkata Raman discovered
that a small portion of the scattered
light acquires other wavelengths than
that of the original light. This is because
some of the incoming photons' energy
can be transferred to a molecule,
giving it a higher level of energy.
Among other things, the phenomenon
is used to analyze different types of
material.

Editor's Column …The role of the College Bulletin!
The newspapers, magazines, newsletters provide wide ranging beneficial information to the society in general and to the youngsters in particular as invariably they remain the most valuable source of news and information despite the onslaught of the electronic media. They are a treasure-trove of information for students preparing for exams and competitions. Knowledge coupled with good expression sets the stage for success in any examination.
The students and young faculty in an academic institution need a medium through which they can showcase their talent and what could be better than to have their own institutional magazine, where everybody gets inspired to contribute an article, a poem, a write up on a recent scientific advancement or chronicling college's academic and extracurricular achievements to name a few. It also becomes a platform to highlight the achievements of faculty, students and to appreciate their hard work and achievements in the studies as well in different curriculums. Sometimes group photographs of the students and the teachers together in the field or institutional visits or receiving a prize from an eminent personality becomes a source of pleasant memories.
As the bulletin is published repeatedly four times a year there are many opportunities available to the students to prepare the contents for their articles. It would also motivate them to do research on topics of their choice, before making the copy to be published in the college bulletin. More time can be spent for rewriting the contents again and again for making it more attractive to the readers.
For each issue, the team of editors, faculty, staff, designers, photographers, in addition to generating creative contents from the student population, work extensively to report on events in and around the college. The final publication reflects and encompasses the diversity inherent to the academic and extra-curricular spaces in the institute.
We have been publishing the quarterly college bulletin “Dolphin Insight” since almost last 10 years. It provides insight of every activity of the college during that quarter. It may be termed as the progress report of those particular months. No doubt The Dolphin Insight is useful in many ways. It has a great educative value. As a copy of the Bulletin goes to parents and guardians it also provides a window to them to look into the activities of the institution where their wards are studying.

Born: 7 November 1888, Tiruch-

As a copy of the Bulletin goes to parents and guardians it also provides a window to them to look into the activities of the institution where their wards are studying.

students driving while talking on
mobile or start late from home for
college or anywhere and then are in
tearing hurry to reach their destination
resulting in major number of
accidents. She advised students to
follow the driving rules in day to day
life since road accidents results in
huge loss to the parents and society.
Shri Dhirendra Gunjiyal. SP, Traffic,

that vector control programmes need
to adapt to match the changing
epidemiological patterns of new
emerging threats. This will require
increased research to develop a sustained
approach to ecological and environ-
mental changes in the years ahead.

Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid, or ASA,
Brand- Disprin®), an ancient anti-
inflammatory agent, is a classic
wonder drug and most successful and
amazing medicine all over the world.
Throughout the world more than 200
billion of these little white pills are
used every year. It became a household
name first as a painkiller, but since then
it has been found to reduce the risk of
several life threatening diseases. Aspirin
is effective not only against everyday
ailments, such as headache and fever,
but also as preventative treatment for
heart attack, stroke, and even some
types of cancer.
Acetylsalicylic acid, the active
ingredient in aspirin, was first
successfully synthesized more than
100 years ago, in 1897, by German
chemist Felix Hoffmann, who was
trying to find out a better form of pain
killer than salicylic acid for his father, a
rheumatoid arthritis sufferer.
Hippocrates, the father of modern
medicine, used salicylic acid as active
ingredient - which he extracted from
the bark and leaves of the willow tree
(Salix alba), a natural source of salicylic
acid, to help alleviate pain and fevers
approximately two millenniums ago.
Some people still use willow bark as a
more natural remedy for headache,
minor aches and pains.
Aspirin first came in market in 1897.
Developed by the pharmaceutical
company Bayer from an extract of
willow bark, it was thought to be the
miracle cure which could treat all
ailments. Acetylsalicylic acid was
produced by modifying salicylic acid to
eliminate earlier side effects such as
nausea and acidity and thus aspirin
was born.
It was initially prescribed as a powder
for effectively treating rheumatism,
relieving headache, toothache, nerve
pain and reducing fever and
inflammation. Once compressed into
a water soluble tablet it became the
first major drug to be sold in tablet form.
Today, while many other pain killers
and anti-inflammatory drugs are
available, none can match aspirin's
versatility or safety. In addition to its
traditional uses, aspirin is now known
to reduce the tendency of blood to
clot, thus lowering the risks of heart

attack and stroke.
Aspirin is a drug of apparently endless
secrets. Research has continually
uncovered new health benefits, from
the first mention in ancient Egyptian
scrolls of willow's medicinal uses to the
more than 750 studies in the first half
of 2004. It is now accepted as a tool in
fighting heart disease and is showing
potential for preventing or treatment
of cardiovascular diseases. In 1950
aspirin was acknowledged as the
world's highest-selling drug, by the
Guinness Book of World Records.
A s p i r i n i s s o p o p u l a r t h a t
approximately 3500 scientific articles
are written about it every year.
Aspirin can cure more than 50
diseases. Mini stroke can be prevented
by taking small doses of aspirin daily.
Aspirin also reduces the risk of heart
disease in diabetic patients. Aspirin
relieves the inflammation caused by
the bite of mosquitoes and bees. Just
wet your skin and rub an aspirin tablet
over the affected area and see the
wonders aspirin does. It is good for
your brain, as it can reduce memory
loss in elderly people. Lastly but not
the least, the freshness of cut flowers
can last longer by adding an aspirin to
the water of the vase, as the salicylic
acid plays an important role in plants'
defence system.
Aspirin continues to be recognized
today as a proven, trusted and cost
effective medicine all over the world.

Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid, or ASA,
Brand- Disprin®), an ancient anti-
inflammatory agent, is a classic
wonder drug and most successful and
amazing medicine all over the world.
Throughout the world more than 200
billion of these little white pills are
used every year. It became a household
name first as a painkiller, but since then
it has been found to reduce the risk of
several life threatening diseases. Aspirin
is effective not only against everyday
ailments, such as headache and fever,
but also as preventative treatment for
heart attack, stroke, and even some
types of cancer.
Acetylsalicylic acid, the active
ingredient in aspirin, was first
successfully synthesized more than
100 years ago, in 1897, by German
chemist Felix Hoffmann, who was
trying to find out a better form of pain
killer than salicylic acid for his father, a
rheumatoid arthritis sufferer.
Hippocrates, the father of modern
medicine, used salicylic acid as active
ingredient - which he extracted from
the bark and leaves of the willow tree
(Salix alba), a natural source of salicylic
acid, to help alleviate pain and fevers
approximately two millenniums ago.
Some people still use willow bark as a
more natural remedy for headache,
minor aches and pains.
Aspirin first came in market in 1897.
Developed by the pharmaceutical
company Bayer from an extract of
willow bark, it was thought to be the
miracle cure which could treat all
ailments. Acetylsalicylic acid was
produced by modifying salicylic acid to
eliminate earlier side effects such as
nausea and acidity and thus aspirin
was born.
It was initially prescribed as a powder
for effectively treating rheumatism,
relieving headache, toothache, nerve
pain and reducing fever and
inflammation. Once compressed into
a water soluble tablet it became the
first major drug to be sold in tablet form.
Today, while many other pain killers
and anti-inflammatory drugs are
available, none can match aspirin's
versatility or safety. In addition to its
traditional uses, aspirin is now known
to reduce the tendency of blood to
clot, thus lowering the risks of heart

attack and stroke.
Aspirin is a drug of apparently endless
secrets. Research has continually
uncovered new health benefits, from
the first mention in ancient Egyptian
scrolls of willow's medicinal uses to the
more than 750 studies in the first half
of 2004. It is now accepted as a tool in
fighting heart disease and is showing
potential for preventing or treatment
of cardiovascular diseases. In 1950
aspirin was acknowledged as the
world's highest-selling drug, by the
Guinness Book of World Records.
A s p i r i n i s s o p o p u l a r t h a t
approximately 3500 scientific articles
are written about it every year.
Aspirin can cure more than 50
diseases. Mini stroke can be prevented
by taking small doses of aspirin daily.
Aspirin also reduces the risk of heart
disease in diabetic patients. Aspirin
relieves the inflammation caused by
the bite of mosquitoes and bees. Just
wet your skin and rub an aspirin tablet
over the affected area and see the
wonders aspirin does. It is good for
your brain, as it can reduce memory
loss in elderly people. Lastly but not
the least, the freshness of cut flowers
can last longer by adding an aspirin to
the water of the vase, as the salicylic
acid plays an important role in plants'
defence system.
Aspirin continues to be recognized
today as a proven, trusted and cost
effective medicine all over the world.

Nobel Prize For Medicine AwardedFor Insights Into Internal Biological Clock
SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENTS
American scientists Jeffrey C
Hall, Michael Rosbash and
Michael W Young were
awarded the 2017 Nobel
Prize in Physiology or
Medicine for "discoveries of
molecular mechanisms
con t r o l l i n g c i r c ad i an
rhythms". The circadian
rhythm or body's inner clock
he lp s r e gu l a t e s l e ep
patterns, feeding behaviour, hormone
release and blood pressure. The team
identified a gene within fruit flies that
controls the creatures' daily rhythm,
known as the “period” gene. This gene
encodes a protein within the cell
during the night which then degrades
during the day. (https://www.

Nobel Prize In Physics Awarded For Discovery of Gravitational Waves
American scientists Rainer
Weiss, Barry C Barish and
Kip S Thorne from the
LIGO/VIRGO collaboration,
which first detected the
gravitational waves, were
awarded the 2017 Nobel
Prize in Physics. Predicted
by Albert Einstein in 1916,
the ripples in space-time
created by colliding black
holes were first detected in 2015.
Gravitational waves are extremely
faint ripples in the fabric of space and
time, generated by some of the most
violent events in the universe. A
wealth of discoveries awaits those who
succeed in capturing the waves.

Nobel Prize In Chemistry Awarded For Method To Visualise Biomolecules
The Nobel Prize in chemistry
this year went to the three
pioneers of cryo-electron
microscopy, a technique that
takes accurate and detailed
pictures of living things at
atomic scales. Developed
over decades by laureates
Jacques Dubochet at the
University of Lausanne in
Switzerland, Joachim Frank
at Columbia University, and Richard
Henderson at the MRC Laboratory of
Molecular Biology in the United
Kingdom, cryo-electron microscopy is
a rare feat of science and engineering
that makes things both simpler and
better. Using it, scientists have made
high-resolution, 3D images to target
cancer drugs and demystify the Zika

Nobel Prize-Winning Technique Sheds New Light On DNA Replication
Scientists using cryo-
electron microscopy,
suggested how the
double helix DNA
s e p a r a t e s d u r i n g
replication. It was
found that DNA follows
a zig-zag path inside a
channel created by two
6-sided rings where it
interacts with two rings
prior to being separated
into 'leading' and 'lagging' strands. The
team at Imperial College, London, was
able to image helicase enzymes, called
Mcm2-7, revealing its 3D structure,
illuminating how the enzymes latch on
to 60 base pairs or letters of the DNA.
The findings could lead to new insights
into the basis of cancer and genetic
disease. (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/

The 'Arctic apple', modified to silence
the genes responsible for producing a
browning enzyme, has gone on sale in
the US for the first time. Typical apples
brown when an enzyme called
polyphenol oxidase is exposed to
oxygen. The genetically modified
apple is sold by a Canada-based
company Okanagan Specialty Fruits,
which planted its first test apples in
2003. (https://www.nature.com/

Switzerland-based researchers have
engineered non-immune cel ls
transforming them into synthetic cells
that mimic T-cells. Naturally occurring
T-cells are cells' immune systems
which detect infections and kill them
but are unable to kill cancer cells as
they do not recognise them as foreign
cells. The synthetic cells were however
engineered with the additional
function of killing cancer. At present
this new system is still a long way from
a therapeutic application, but it opens
up a new front in the battle against

Physicists Confirm The Existence of A New Form of Matter Called
"excitonium"
U S a n d N e t h e r l a n d s - b a s e d
researchers have proven the existence
of a new form of matter excitonium,
almost 50 years after it was theorised.
Excitonium is a condensate made of
excitons, particles formed in a
quantum mechanical pairing of an
escaped electron and the hole it left
behind. The hole behaves like a
positive charge and attracts negatively-
charged electrons to form excitons.

Marine Organisms CanShred A Plastic Bag
Into 1.75 Million PiecesA single plastic bag could be shredded
by marine organisms into around 1.75
million microscopic fragments,
according to a UK-based research
conducted in December, at the
University of Plymouth. Marine
scientists examined the rate at which
bags were broken down by the
amphipod Orchestia gammarellus,
found in European coastal areas. The
type of plastic (conventional,
degradable, and biodegradable) had
no effect on the rate of ingestion.
