Notes from Jarvis after Interviews

“Sabre was in the office today. Responding to our request for feedback, one of the interviewers shared that none of the students she interviewed today explained, when asked, why they wanted to work at Sabre in particular. They may have said they wanted to work in the travel industry or they wanted to work somewhere innovative but none connected the dots to Sabre. This is consistent with what we’ve heard from other employers, so I wanted to share it again to em-phasize how important it is from an employer standpoint for a student to make that connection. That being said, the in-terviewer did say she still was going to recommend some of the candidates she interviewed move forward in the selec-tion process. So, some of these students will get another chance with Sabre!”

The Raymond & Judy Smilor Entrepreneurial Leadership Scholarship

The Raymond and Judy Smilor Entrepreneurial Leadership Scholarship is provided by the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Smilor. Dr. Smilor serves as Professor of Professional Practice and the Robert and Edith Schumacher Executive Faculty Fellow in Innovation and Technology in the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. The Raymond and Judy Smilor Entrepreneurial Leadership Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in the Neeley School of Business, who demonstrate the skills, attitudes and behaviors of value-centered entrepreneurs. Applicants should exhibit an entrepreneurial mind-set in pursuing opportunity, a passion to make a positive difference in their own life and in the lives of others, and a willingness to work hard to achieve a worthy purpose. Golin unleashes unconventional intern program to spur creativity and a sense of adventure in the next generation of communicators

CHICAGO – Oct. 13, 2014 – Imagine a post-grad internship that goes beyond the office cubicle and provides unforgettable experiences the way you want to do it. Introducing the Golin Unternship – an unconventional way Golin aims to attract new junior talent by giving graduates an opportunity to gain real world experiences to apply to their career.

A new extension to Golin’s bold new “Go All In” approach, the Golin Unternship allows the “Untern” to glean skills from life experiences like hiking the Appalachian Trail, mentoring inner-city youth or guiding tours across the country – while sharing their insights in real-time with Golin and beyond.

Untern candidates will be tasked with devising their own unique and adventurous three-month Un-ternship program anywhere in the U.S. After three months, the Golin Untern will return to a full-time, paid position at Golin, filled with creativity and a fresh perspective on life.

Inspired by Golin CEO Fred Cook’s book Improvise: Unconventional Career Advice from an Unlikely CEO, the Golin Unternship aims to unlock an adventurous spirit and fearless creativity of new em-ployees at a critical point in their careers.

“My own path to CEO was not typical, and the Golin Unternship is a truly unique opportunity for the next generation of talent to break free from the office cubicle, really discover what they can offer and then apply it to Golin’s culture and client work,” said Cook. “We understand the need to embrace dif-ferent backgrounds and talent and believe that present-day graduates – and even those deep into their own careers – could use a push to think beyond the cubicle.”

“Sabre was in the office today. Responding to our request for feedback, one of the interviewers shared that none of the stu-dents she interviewed today explained, when asked, why they wanted to work at Sabre in particular. They may have said they wanted to work in the travel industry or they wanted to work somewhere innovative but none connected the dots to Sabre. This is consistent with what we’ve heard from other employers, so I wanted to share it again to emphasize how im-portant it is from an employer standpoint for a student to make that connection. That being said, the interviewer did say she still was going to recommend some of the candidates she interviewed move forward in the selection process. So, some of these students will get another chance with Sabre!”
