One of the Sportsman Channel starsof The Birdmen, Denis Isbister, and hiscrew, were visiting Killam and area, shooting footage for their upcomingsecond season, bringing two Nevadayouth with them, and inviting somelocal kids along for the shoot.

Killam’s Chad Bonnett and BaileyAntos went out for an evening’s hunt, and Red Willow native ByronDinsmore had a few hunts withIsbister.

Isbister’s show is starting its secondseason this fall, and the focus is onyouth, and bird hunting.

Local outfitters Danny and CarolynVanCleave, friends of Isbister, huntwith him every year he’s been comingto Alberta, about 12, and they areproud of the work he does with youth.

Isbister says, “When I was 21, myfriend had a kid with rheumatoidarthritis. He loved to hunt, but had noopportunity to get out.

“When he was 11-years-old, I startedtaking him out into the marsh. That’swhen I started down this path.

“Kids get so much out of it.”Isbister featured 20 different kids on

hunts in his first season. For those kids who stand out more,

Isbister developed the Future FowlersPro-Staff.

Isbister says, “The goal of FutureFowlers is to get kids involved, not juston the hunting side of things, but theeducational and conservational aspectof the outdoors as well.

“To be a member of the FutureFowlers you have to meet certaincriteria: be within a particular agegroup, have at least a C-average inschool, and you must be involved in aminimum of two conservational effortsa year.”

Obviously one of the critera is a loveof hunting.

Byron’s father, Pat Dinsmore, accom-panied him on his first outing withIsbister, to make sure everything wassafe, and said, “The kids with DennisIsbister are very safe,” adding, “theyare just awesome people.”

Dinsmore said Byron turned 12 lastyear and went hunting with him onabout 15 hunts in all, and was reallyexcited to be asked along with Isbister.

Dinsmore, himself an avid hunter, offered his help to Isbister while the

crew was in the area.Dinsmore was surprised and very

pleased, but not more than Byron him-self, when at the end of their hunts,Isbister named him as a Future Fowler, the newest member, and onlyCanadian, to that list.

“I don’t think Byron realizes howmany doors just opened for him,”Dinsmore says.

Isbister says that a recent report hecaught on USA Today says that gettingyouth involved in hunting seems to beworking, with significant growth in thenumber of women and girls hunting aswell.

“We’ve taken so many kids whowanted to try it,” he says, “and somewho have really taken to it.”

“The show’s focus is not just on me,it’s on the kids.”

Isbister works with Delta Waterfowl, and Ducks Unlimited, and is serious

about his Future Fowlers giving some-thing back.

“One of the first shows we did fea-tured a banding segment with a localbiologist, we had kids helping to bandducks, and taught them why it’s soimportant.”

“Our Future Fowlers need to find outhow they can volunteer locally.

“We teach kids and adults to becomeenvironmentally aware, it’s more thanjust about harvesting the birds, hunt-ing is about being good stewards of theland and our natural resources.”

“Hunters are environmentalists tothe nth degree,” Isbister said, “We’rethe ones out in the middle of it.”

Isbister plans to return to Alberta, and he encourages local kids to findhim on Facebook under The Birdmen, and send him a message if they mightbe interested in coming along on a huntnext year.

“Where I’m from, hunting is verygear-intensive, and very expensive, soif I can help kids take an interest bytaking them along when they other-wise couldn’t afford to, I love it,”Isbister says.

During the last shoot that theDinsmores participated in withIsbister, they took out only 24 decoys, and Isbister said, “We had a fantastictime with just a little bit of gear.”

The Birdmen crew travelled through-out the area, near Wavy Lake, Donalda,Rosalind, Bellshill, near Killam, andnear Forestburg.

Their last shoot was in an area ofrolling hills, on a foggy morning, andDinsmore said, “People dream abouthunts like that, with the weather andthe scenery,”

He added, “There are two words tosum up duck hunting; passion, andbonding.”

The Birdmen were in the area filming for their upcoming season with some local youth invited along for the hunt. From left,Danny VanCleave, Killam Waterfowl Outfitters; Anthony Costello, Derick Cole, President of Webley & Scott USA; DenisIsbister, Host of The Birdmen; Karen Brigman, Webley & Scott pro staff member and Prois Hunting Clothing staff member.Front row: Bailey Antos and Chad Bonnet, from Killam; Byron Dinsmore from Red Willow.

Technology has changed the nature of hunting down the prey

A game cameraʼs motion sensor triggered it to take this photo when a moosesauntered by. These cameras are more and more popular with hunters as theycan be used to track the movements of animals remotely. Both photos abovewere taken with an actual game camera.

Cameras mounted in the bush can be set to record photos or video when gamewalks by, storing the information on a card in the camera.

Karen NedzielskiStaff Reporter

Many of today's techsavvy hunters resortto the help of a gamecamera when seekingout and patterning thebehaviours of wildanimals.

The days of tramp-ing around in thebushes for weeks insearch of deer andmoose have nearlycome to an end.

With the help of a

digital camera, mount-ed on either a tree orpost, the hunt can bereduced to merehours.

These cameras varyby model, and cancapture images withor without a flash at alltimes of the day andnight.

When the camera isin place, its motionsensor is triggeredwhen an animal pass-es by.

Depending on the

model, the camera cantake a series of pic-tures or video, record-ing the date and timethe animal passed by.

The information isthen stored on a mem-ory card for the hunterto review later.

Although these cam-eras are mainly pur-chased by huntingfanatics, many peoplebuy them for the solepurpose of filmingwild animals in theirnatural habitat.

Sherwood Park Fish and Game AssociationHome for the conservation-minded shooter

A shooter takes aim with his rifle at the Sherwood Park Fish and GameAssociation recreation area.

Patricia HarcourtTofield Mercury

The sign at theentrance way calls theSherwood Park Fish andGame Association’srecreation area a “homefor the conservation-minded shooter.”

That is what PresidentPat Harris emphasizeswhile conducting a sight-seeing tour of the 720-acre facility, which cur-rently has a cappedmembership of 3,400.

“We’re here primarilyfor safety first, thenshooting,” says Harris, explaining that no shoot-ing is allowed except onspecific ranges set out forthat purpose. The con-servation is in the formof a 160 acres set aside inperpetuity for habitatunder an agreement withthe Nature Conservancyof Canada.

The rules are very tightin that no guests areallowed at the range.

“You have to be amember to shoot herebecause of the insurancepolicy,” says Harris.“And all new membershave to go through arange safety orientation.

“We are very safetyconscious,” he said, not-ing there is a mandatorysign-in at the gate.

See RANGE P6

Page 6: October 2012 ECT

The gate posts the shoot-ing range hours which aredependent upon the hoursof available daylight.

At the Big Bore Rangefor rifles over .22-calibre,Robert Adamson fromAntler Lake calls a ceasefire to pick up targets. Acurtain drops over thefront of the firing rangeand no one is allowed togo past the cease fire lineor shoot their firearms, which remain on thebenches.

Adamson states thatsomeone needs to be onsafety watch at all times. The first person on a par-ticular shooting range isthe range officer in chargeof safety.

Once the curtain goesup signalling that shoot-ing can begin, shooterscan aim at paper targetson backboards ranging indistance from 100 metres,200 metres and 300 metresaway. The only other tar-get they are allowed toshoot at is the gong targetlocated to the right side ofthe targets.

Harris is a CanadianFirearms Safety Courseinstructor and retiredschool teacher. He has alsobeen named HunterEducation Instructor ofthe Year and is proud ofhis club’s safety record.

“We’re used as a safetystandard for other places,”he said. “Every range (inthe club) gets a high ratingall the time,” by the feder-al government’s ChiefFirearms Officer.

A big part of the safetyis having berms to stopthe bullets. The bermsrange from 15 ft. to 30 ft.high.

Each shooting range haslarge signs with the gener-al range rules laid out forshooters to follow, and thetimes within which shoot-ing is allowed posted onthe gate, which coincideswith sunrise and sunset.

“We do have video sur-veillance and everybodywears a green card withmembership number andwhether they are a rangemember or regular mem-ber.”

Four police detach-ments use the firing rangeand can set up their ownfire lines as well as havetheir own range officers. That particular day, alarge group were locatedat the Big Bore OverflowRange, shooting semi-automatic assault rifles.Harris said only the policeare allowed to use thehuman silhouette targets.

“This is one of the lastoutdoor ranges,” he said,

that the police can utilizefor tactical training. “It’sthe only way the policecan learn how to use allthose firearms.”

In fact, the SherwoodPark Fish and GameAssociation is the biggestfish and game associationin Alberta. It was original-ly formed in 1968 andmoved to its present sitein Beaver County south-west of Tofield in 1974.

Other features at theclub include a trap rangefor shooting clay pigeons.Harris said the animalsare so used to the sound ofgunfire they don’t runaway. He gives the exam-ple of a moose that stoodstill and watched five menshooting clay pigeons atthe trap range.

The club also has anarchery range, plus anarchery trail with 3D tar-gets. A bow shooting plat-form allows bow huntersto aim for a bull’s eyestrategically placed in thebush below.

But there is more to thisrecreation area than sim-ply shooting targets. Thelocal Junior ForestWardens, Girl Guides andBoy Scouts come out touse the clubhouse foractivities.

“They come out for freebecause we think it is veryimportant,” said Harris,

for young people tobecome involved in theoutdoors. They can alsofish in the fish pond, which is stocked withtrout every year.

Plus, members cancamp and enjoy the bigoutdoors by using thegroomed hiking trails.

“If you like camping it’sa wonderful place tocome,” he said. About 45

volunteer members form awork party to clean thetrails and get firewood forthis venue.
