The Paralegal Post OCTOBER 2016
Welcome to Fall 2016! The calendar may indicate that it is the beginning of autumn but, as a longtime resident of Bakersfield, I’ve long been aware that we are not blessed with a lengthy season of fall type weather. Rather, we have a couple of days of fall, revert back to 100 degrees, and then head directly into winter. I hope you all enjoy the cooler weather after the heat of summer.
Speaking of fall, we are within 9 weeks of Thanksgiving. Our organization tries to support families in need at this time of the year by providing the family with a Thanksgiving meal. Last year, we provided meals to five families. Please nominate a deserving family by emailing Kristen at [email protected]. Also, don’t forget to bring a monetary donation to our October 13th general meeting to help with the cost of the meals.
On December 5th, KCPA and the Kern County Bar Association will hold our annual Holiday Luncheon. This year we will return to the Petroleum Club for this event. Please save the date as we are hoping to have a large turnout for the luncheon.
On another note, I anticipate that our partnership with Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance will commence in after the first of the year. This means that we will hold training sessions to equip those of you who would like to do pro bono work and will
begin assisting in the areas of your choice. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you would like to be added to an e-mail group for announcements of the training dates and other opportunities. In your e-mail, please provide me with your area of expertise and a good contact phone number.
Have a wonderful October.

If you are like me, you often feel like you never have enough time in the day. Many people never sit down and look at how to do their job smarter, rather they work harder and spend even longer hours doing it. Below are five tips to be more efficient in the office.
Use Shortcuts On The Keyboard. Using shortcuts on the keyboard is a major time saver and can speed up your work. For example, to change letters to uppercase, lowercase, or mixed case, press Shift + F3. There are many of these and if you make the effort to learn them, they can be helpful.
Use The Time-Blocking Method. Productivity is
the result of intelligent planning. Spend thirty minutes on Monday to prioritize your projects for the week. Mark the time on your calendar so no one else can schedule a meeting during that time. Spend five minutes each afternoon to organize your next day and block out the time you will need on your calendar.
Macros. Learn them. It is well worth taking the
time to program a boring repetitive task and replace it with one click.
Pick Up The Phone. Drafting emails takes time. It
is often better to pick up the phone and talk to the person. If that person works in your same office, it is even better to go and talk to him or her. It gives you a break, you get some exercise, and you actually get to make some human contact, which is becoming quite rare in this electronic world.
Improve Your Time Management Skills. Easier said than done? Not at all! Sometimes you just need to disconnect from the phone and emails and just get to work. It is that simple. Abandon the idea of multitasking since it will slow you down and ruin your focus. Do not forget to set a reasonable deadline and do everything in your power to do it.
