President’s Report: Welcome and thank you to our guest speakers for their informative and

entertaining First Aid presentation. Thank you also to those members who

accepted office bearer positions at the AGM. I am looking forward to

working with you over the next 12 months. As members know the position

of Events Director was not filled at the AGM. John Kaczmarek has kindly

stepped in to become the spokesperson for the Events Committee. This

gesture is greatly appreciated.

Our fellow member Ian McLeish passed away on 14 August and was

buried at Queanbeyan cemetery after a service at Christ Church

Queanbeyan. STHARC members provided a motorcade procession and

guard of honour for Ian‟s service. Ian‟s Mercedes sports car was the first

vehicle to greet the funeral cortege as it entered the lawn cemetery. I

would like to hold a moment of silence in memory of our friend. The club

passes on its condolences to the family.

Minutes of previous meeting Minutes of the August Meeting are published in the September edition of

The Wheel. Minutes of the 2016 Annual General Meeting were also

published in the September edition of the Wheel. Corrections are needed.

The text of the President‟s address to that meeting was not included and

page 4 The Wheel # 169

will be published in the October Wheel as an addendum to the minutes of

the AGM. It has also been noted that the proposal put to the AGM to

increase the membership application fee to $50 was amended to $25 and

passed at the meeting. The minutes of the AGM will need to be amended

to correct the error in the minutes.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer sends apologies for inability to attend meeting.The current

balance in the club‟s accounts is $7530 in addition to the amount held on

fixed deposit. Membership subscriptions, proceeds from the raffle and

sale of calendars in hand are not included in total. Only a few

membership renewals remain outstanding.

Reimbursements sought for $255 for publications committee for stamps

and stationery and Public Officer for filing fees of $54 for annual return to

Dept of Fair Trading.

Editor’s Report :President thanked Rosemary for taking on the role as Editor. John Thomas presented a report on behalf of the Editor.The Editor

would like to receive brief personal outlines from members along the lines

of “This is who I am” It was suggested from the floor that this would be a

good place for new members to present a picture of their interests for

other members. The Editor has commitments with another organization

and needs to close off the newsletter for the following month by the 15th of

the month. Contributors are asked to submit any reports and pictures by

that date.

Public Officer: The annual returns to Dept of Fair Trading have been filed. Proposed changes to NSW Associations Incorporation legislation do

not appear to have any significant implications for STHARC. It is possible

that annual filing fees may be removed.

Website Report: A new [email protected] email address has been created and messages can now be sent to the Editor using this address.

Large picture files can be a problem for both the Editor and the

Webmaster. It was suggested that Dropbox could be used. Webmaster

will insert on the website, details of how to use Dropbox to submit pictures

STHARC club member Ian McLeish, suffered a serious fall in December

2015, which resulted in hospitalization and surgery. Ian managed a

significant recovery but about mid 2016 complications and other issues

resulted in a deterioration of his health. Ian passed away on 15 August

2016.

Ian served in various office bearer positions for the club and for the past

several years has been the Club‟s Public Officer. Ian and Krys have been

frequent participants in club events and have hosted many events at their

home including the regular Melbourne Cup Day party.

STHARC club members were invited by the family to celebrate Ian‟s life

with his family and other friends.

A service was held at Christ Church Queanbeyan on 24 August followed

by a burial at Queanbeyan Lawn Cemetery. The church was packed to

capacity with family and friends including a large number of STHARC

members. Following the church service, a convoy of 19 STHARC club

cars drove to the cemetery where they formed a guard of honour along

the entrance driveway. The first car in the guard of honour was Ian‟s

former 450SL Mercedes sports.

Following the burial a wake was held at the Queanbeyan RSL Bowling

Club in Yass Road. Krys felt that Ian would have been thrilled with the

guard of honour mounted for him with the club cars. Krys appears to be

coping well with her loss and has indicated that she intends maintaining

her club membership and being involved in club activities.

It was the 10th anniversary of the Golden Oldies Truck Club at Dubbo and what a great gathering it turned out to be with record entries.

On the Friday they organised a trip to a cotton farm near Narromine. We didn‟t see much cotton, but there was a lot of interesting machinery, from horse carts to massive low loaders and farm machinery. The owner told me his father had the International Harvester dealership for the area. He had Inters in his blood and all he read was Inter manuals, so on his passing they buried him with a workshop manual to keep him busy beyond the Pearly Gates.

On the return trip we went through Narromine to see Geoff Rudd‟s White prime mover being restored. There was no “gunna do it up” by the new owner, it was well under way. He is hoping to have it ready for the White Muster early next year at Kyabram.

The Saturday was the display day it was full on with many tired legs by about 3.00 pm. The trucks came from as far as Murray Bridge (a 1947 Bedford of course), Melbourne, Sydney and Southern Queensland.

The machinery on display was ranged from a 1910 International truck/ buggy to the latest prime movers, Howard rotary Hoes, Cars, Tractors, Dozers and to top it off the ladies showed their skills with a very interesting Quilt show.

The Dubbo TAFE had an excellent display of the latest in machinery engines. Their team of explainers were very well informed and were only too happy to talk with the public about each engine.

The trip to and from Dubbo went without a hitch. The Dodge performed well and we had good breaks and meals at the little country towns along the way that appreciate tourist support.

Greazefest On Friday 5th August , Simon and I set out at 1 am in the morning in the

Hotrod for Greazefest which was held at the Cleveland Showground just

outside of Brisbane. We arrived at our friend‟s house, where we were

staying, at about 6 pm that night where the Purple People Eater was

lucky enough to share the garage with Rhonda, the Little Red Car.

Greazefest is a Rockabilly, Rock‟n‟Roll show with Cars of the 50‟s and

60‟s, hotrods and customized cars and some from earlier times.

They have bands who play mainly Rockabilly style music. They have

Rock‟n‟Roll and Rockabilly dancing and many

people dress up in their 50‟s era clothes.

There are many stalls selling clothes related

to the era, bags, car parts etc. Barbers cut

hair to the era and they sold the original

brushes for shaving and the original type

razors most of the men in this club would

remember. One of the barbers called Jimmy

Rods has a bar in his barber shop and you

can have a drink while your hair is being done

or sit at the bar and have one or two after.

They don‟t cut hair for children under 18.


After a day of listening to music, sussing out the cars, wandering around

the stalls and catching up with a friend who had moved up that way 15

years ago we took the cars back to their garage and drove a modern into

Brisbane to an Eat Café. It was along the Brisbane River and it was quite

a few shipping containers which are fitted out as kitchens and you can

wander around them and choose what type of food you would like to eat.

We got there at 6 and cars were parked a km or more away. We were

lucky enough to park just outside the door because of my crutches. We

had a good meal there. It was a very popular place.

The following day we had another good day at Greazefest picking up the

Trophy for the longest distance travelled. We were surprised when

someone we knew from here came up and said hello. We headed home

at 8 am on the Monday. Unfortunately we had picked up some stale or

dirty fuel the night before and started having problems with the car. By the

time we got to Armidale we had topped up the tank regularly enough and

our problems were over. It was a great weekend but a few more days

next time would be good.

Council Reports:

ACT Council :ACT Government has an events policy document out for comment at the moment. Inputs are expected by September. The

major issue of interest seems to be getting some consistency in ACT

government approach to road closures for events. The working group to

review the operation of the CACTMC now has two members. No sign of

other volunteers. The Canberra Pie cart is now again without a home and

is parked outside at a suburban residence and looking for a secure

covered home.

Bush Council :The modified vehicle concessional arrangements to be known as CVS are believed to have been signed off by the Minister to-

day. No confirmation has yet been seen. The 2/3 of rated capacity

restriction which applied to H plated commercial vehicles has been

removed and such vehicles may now be used up to their full rated

capacity.The half yearly meeting of CHMC will be held in Parkes, on 23

October. Allan plans to attend.

Events: No-one present at the meeting attended Battle of Waterloo on Sunday.

The French are anticipated to have been disadvantaged by the

conditions, the lack of access to Land Rovers and the treason

implications of using Wellington boots.

John Thomas and Geoff Rudd have hired a mini bus for a run to Port

Kembla on 9 October to attend the Cleary Bros Museum open day. They

already have 6 intending participants and will hire a second bus if

necessary. The anticipated cost will be about $32.50 per person if all

available seats are taken up and of course more if there are empty seats.

Members interested need to contact John or Geoff. Secretary is to send

out message to members on this event.

The social dinner gathering this Thursday night will be held at Vikings

Club at Erindale. October is at Pizza Palace, Colbee Court Phillip then

back to the Burns Club at Kambah for November. There will also be a

gathering at the Royal Hotel Bungendore for lunch on Sunday 25

September.

This Saturday there will be a club run to Braidwood and Majors Creek.

Run departs the club house at 9.00 for morning tea at Braidwood then

lunch at Major‟s Creek for a BBQ on David and Gill Buckley‟s new block.

October mid week run is to CSIRO Discovery Centre at Black Mountain.


The first morning tea gathering for lady members is planned for Friday 23

September at 10.30 am at Gifts and Gadgets in Crawford Street

Quenabyean. Subsequent gatherings will be planned for the last Friday in

the month.

General Business:

New membership application – An application for membership has been received from Bob Gutesa who is known to a number of members

and has a 1962 Falcon. The Committee has considered the application

and recommends acceptance of Bob as a member. Members present

voted to accept the new member.

Abuse of concessional registration - The notice from ACT RTA about misuse of historic plated vehicles has been placed on the STHARC

website. A proposal was received for a motion to impose automatic

cancellation of membership for any member found to be involved in such

use of club plated vehicles.

The motion was discussed by members present. It was pointed out that

the action proposed appears to require an amendment of the club‟s

Constitution which is in itself exceedingly difficult to achieve. Existing

provisions in the club‟s Constitution are perhaps sufficient to deal with this

situation anyway. In view of the need to amend the Constitution to

implement the motion it was decided that the motion cannot properly be

put forward for decision at this meeting.

Rhonda Winnett has advised that she has an original framed hand

painted picture of a 1951 Jaguar, Mark V Drophead, Coupe, by famed

South Australian artist, Allan Ames and has offered to donate it to the

club to be sold to an interested person. It was agreed that the Webmaster

will discuss possibilities with the donor and look at dealing with the sale

through the website. Other relevant clubs such as the Jaguar Drivers

Club will also be advised of the likely sale and invited to participate.

Rhonda also has Club magazines back to 2003. Anyone interested in a

little light reading should contact Rhonda.

The Wheels Choice trophy for 2016 was awarded to David Arton and

Alicia Tipping for their VW Beetle. They were unable to attend the awards

presentation dinner event. The trophy was presented to them by the

President.

The Girl Guides are looking to erect a shed in the enclosure adjacent to

the hall. They have asked if STHARC members would be able to assist

with the pouring of the concrete slab when the time comes. Members

agreed that we will try to assist when asked. Continued on page 16

Krys McLeish thanked the club members for their support and presence at Ian‟s funeral, Joe Vavra advised members that the advice he has from NRMA is that the 10 day restriction on vehicle use in any month can be set aside at owner‟s request for rallies and the like where the vehicles are likely to be on the road for more than the specified 10 days. Birthdays and anniversaries: Steve Farmer from Shannons and his wife celebrated the birth of their child last week. Birthdays for James Corbett 10/9, Allan 19/9, Steve 4/9, Peta 25/9, Ros 7/9 and a wedding anniversary for David and Gill 21/9. Health and Welfare: Peter Migan is in Canberra Hospital recovering from a heart attack. Raffle: Prizes donated by Krys McLeish in appreciation of the club‟s support. Winners – Doug McMahon, Pauline, Ian Robinson and Kay Carratt.

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT( Omitted from AGM Minutes) Good evening. 2015/16 was again a successful year for STHARC. Our

membership has continued to grow steadily and I welcome our newer

members to this their first AGM. STHARC is all about our members love

and enjoyment of historic vehicles. And we share this interest at events

and social gatherings throughout the year. I am pleased to see the

excellent attendance at our monthly meetings and the great success of

the various club runs and other activities during the year. At the heart of

every successful club there is always an active committee that manages

the affairs of the organisation and I want to wholeheartedly thank all the

STAHARC committee members for their work and commitment.

Firstly I want to thank Geoff Rudd in his role as Vice President. Through

his vast business experience and knowledge, Geoff has supported both

myself and the committee with insight and understanding. I was

especially grateful for your support during my long illness late last year.

The club is lucky to have someone with the energy and abilities of Lawrie

Nock to fill the critical role of secretary. Lawrie manages the day to affairs

of our club. Lawrie keeps us up to date. This is evidenced from the

numerous communications we receive from him and when you include his

role in representing us on the Council of ACT motor clubs we can all see


just how much he does for us. Thanks Lawrie.

Historic Vehicle registration is self managed by clubs recognised by the

RTA. The RTA rules instruct that each club appoint a registrar to

oversight the club‟s compliance with registration requirements. This is an

important and highly responsible role and STHARC is and has for some

time been lucky to have someone with the abilities, integrity and fairness

of someone like John Corbett and I thank him for his work in what has

been a very busy year for our registrar. I would also like to thank Pam

Corbett who acts as our membership secretary. Pam and John are active

in many areas of the club‟s activities and are a great example to us all.I

would like to thank Albert Neuss for his continuing role as vehicle

inspector.

Brian Thomas manages our accounts with great efficiency. He provides

excellent financial guidance to the Committee and to our members

including compliance with corporate standards and Governance.

The centre pages of our club magazine list the numerous and various

activities and outings available to members. This central activity of our

club has been brilliantly managed by Jane Nock with the support of her

sub-committee. Jane‟s excellent organising abilities contribute to an

interesting range of events throughout the year. A glance through the roll

call for our events is testament to the efforts of Jane, Pauline Campbell,

David Torricke-Barton, David Arton, Alicia tipping and John Kaczmareck. I

also want to thank that committee for their great efforts in organising the

Christmas party and annual presentation dinner.

For many years the STHARC website was problematic. We all know what

a powerful tool our website can be and I want to thank our Webmaster

Malcolm Roxburgh for delivering that tool. Thanks to Malcolm our website

is up to date, well presented and professional. The website gives us

ability to publish more information in a more timely manner than any other

medium. Thanks Malcolm.

Ray and Barbara Malam have control over the vast property resources of

STHARC and I thank them for their efforts. Our clothing is contemporary

and Barbara always manages to supply a great range of prizes for our

raffles. Continued on page 22


Frank and Mark Culmone’s

International R190 truck. (Cover Story)

Of the all time popular trucks the International R190 was the truck of the 1950‟s and early 60‟s. It was the one that made International Harvester famous. They were to be seen everywhere and doing everything. The pictured truck is owned by club members Mark and Frank

Culmone of Goulburn. It is a 1965 model. They purchased it and it was used on a freight run from Canberra to Braidwood. The Cummins engine was rebuilt in 1988 and the truck was totally restored in 1988. The International on the back is a D1110, 1985 Model. This vehicle is as original and unrestored. It was previously owned by Mr Colin Pike of Temora who bought it new. The purchase was made from the winnings of the well known harness racing horse Paleface Adios, the horse was owned by Mrs Shirley Pike. (There is a monument in Temora to Paleface Adios, considered the Phar Lap of harness racing .)

Big Boys’ Toys Expo

We were asked by Steven

Farmer if we would display

the Hotrod in the Shannon‟s

Display at the Big Boys Toys

Expo on the 20th and 21st

August.

On the 18th I drove it to the media launch and it appeared on the Win

News that night along with other modes of transport including a

helicopter. One of the highlights of the launch was the 13 ton fire truck

which was being pulled by a local strong man. It was the 2nd year the

exhibition was held to raise money for Menslink.

On the weekend they had displays of remote controlled vehicles of all

types, and a pavilion dedicated to robotics and technology, including

drones and robots. They also had displays of fitness activities and then

boats, water sport, motorised scooters, karts etc. There were a few

displays to interest women.

There were a couple of car clubs who came along, one of them being the

Yass Club and then a few of the more modern cars. It would have been

nice to see more people display their car. There was a people‟s choice

which was won by one of the more modern Fords. The prize was donated

by The Retro Garage in Gladstone St, Fyshwick.

The display which I found was most

interesting was the display of 3D

Printers. There was a large pavilion

dedicated to this. I went back 5 times

to see the different stages some of the

projects were at.

The Driver by Alice Mabim.

Alice wrote this book as a tribute to people involved in the Australian and New Zealand road transport industry during the twenty-first century. It is a quality hardback book. A milestone of transport history page precedes 227 pages of magnificent photos and personal stories from trucking companies and personalities in each state and territory of Australia. New Zealand‟s section is at the back of the book. It is just the book for the coffee table or man cave. The cost is $69.99. From Murrumbateman a total of 12 cars travelled without incident to

Binalong where the first port of call was Stuart Saunders‟ motor museum.

We were met at the museum by our host and several members of the

Young Club who had taken up our invitation to join us for the visit and

lunch. The museum is not a large one

but holds an interesting collection of

vehicles. Notable was a dray parked

outside the main entrance which

appeared to be powered by a Rolls-

Royce Meteor engine, a scale model

Flying Scot railway locomotive and a

scaled down Ferrari V12 block engine.

In the workshop we discovered a type

Bugatti and a 1920s Delage. The Delage

was flanked by what one of our members

described as a basket case wickerwork

body on one side and a straight 8

Packard engine in the process of being

rebuilt on the other.

In the main part of the museum, the MAB

powered by a 27 litre Lycombing engine

remains a very impressive beast and

dwarfs all of the other cars and exhibits. A couple of members were

observed trying to work out how to spirit the Bolwell Nagari away but they

were not successful.

STHARC is part of a large group of automotive enthusiast clubs in NSW. I want to thank Allan and Chris Boyd for looking after our interests on the Bush Council. Last year saw the introduction of the log book scheme and the regular updates on its development including the separate treatment of modified vehicles was of great value to us all. Historic registration is a critical issue for our club and we are well served by Allan and Chris in support of our club‟s interests. STHARC like any organisation is subject to corporate regulation and compliance matters. Our public Officer of long standing Ian Mcleish has served us diligently in his role as public officer. I want to thank Ian for all his years of service to the club including those as President. I am sure we all wish Ian well as he recovers in hospital. Following my years as publisher I didn‟t think the club magazine could get much better but was I wrong. As editor David Buckley has taken the magazine to new heights. David is creative and has exhibited a great flair as a journalist. David has been ably supported by the publishing committee made up by John and Ronda Cornwell, Ian and Krystyna Mcleish, Geoff Rudd and Jane Nock. I want to thank David and his team for such a wonderful effort for keeping us informed and for the enjoyment that our magazine provides. Last of all I want to thank our members for your continued patronage and I want to encourage you all to consider the various vacant positions during our election later in proceedings. I look forward to the next year and I am sure that the club will continue to flourish with your support.

After an interest packed tour the group headed for the local pub for what

had been promised to be an enjoyable meal. Lunch in the beer garden

was a pleasant social affair supported by plenty of good food. The turn

out of club members was once again exceptional. The destination did not

fail to impress.

Holden Heritage Coin Sale

at the Mint. Regardless of the inclement weather on Saturday August 11, queues

started amassing early for purchasing. Some brave people having

queued from the early hours (one man was there at 1am.),to secure their

set of coins. The cars that were used for etching the Heritage collection

were on show as well as many other vintage Holdens. There was a limit

of one Heritage Collection per person. Single coins were also available.

Many people were disappointed with not being able to purchase a set of

the Holden Heritage coin collection as the Mint rapidly sold out of stock.

John Thomas and Jeff Gill were among the lucky ones from our club.

Observation run to Sutton and Gundaroo

August 28 This event was scheduled as an observation run. Time got the better of

us so the functioning of the run was changed but the name remained

unchanged.

Members arriving at the club house observed that there were other club

members present. The convoy participants then had the opportunity to

observe the countryside as they headed out along Sutton Road to Sutton

village where by observation they were able to locate a bakery where

once there was none.

Inside the premises, the Baker at Sutton had a line up of treats for club

members to observe. Some were not satisfied to observe and sampled

the wares. The group grew as additional members arrived. Outside the

premises in the car park there was another observation to be made. In

times past for VW to have won the day on numbers would have required

the Karmann Ghia and Ringo to turn up for a run with not many others.

Not merely a third VW present but another from the VW stable to

accompany them. You may scoff but Bentley now comes out of the VW

stable so there were sort of 4 VWs there (not many observed that).

Eventually most of the participants decided to head off to Gundaroo to

observe the situation there. Those with local knowledge were able to

point participants to a difficult to observe Friendly Grocer store off the

main street. Observant members found a take away at the rear of the

shop. Fish and chips was the main order for the day. The less hardy

stayed in the store to eat while the more adventurous headed off to the

Gundaroo Oval to picnic or observe the buildings in the main street of

Gundaroo.

The blue skies remained visible throughout the day. The only problem

was that they seemed to be somewhere over Murrumbateman or Yass.

The very brief ray of sunshine was very welcome but too short lived. No-

one seemed to be interested in taking the dirt road observation of Lake

George so Jane invited the not too observant home for a cuppa.


Condition of entry was not observing the state of the housework.

About 15 members took afternoon tea courtesy of Jane and spent a lazy

hour or so relaxing. Not wishing to test the kangaroo observation skills

any more than absolutely essential everyone was back in the cars and

headed home by 4.00pm.
