USA Archery Congratulates 2017 Coach of the Year Award Recipients

A National Coach of the Year nominee is a coach of an Elite Level Club, Collegiate, Pan-Am, World Cham-pionship or Olympic Games coach or the coach of an elite athlete who competes at the highest level of your sport. This year, USA Archery awards this honor to Holly Stover (Brighton, Michigan) and Steve Yee (Phoenix, Arizona).

Male National Coach of the Year, Steve Yee is a coach for the Compound Junior Dream Team Program and his archers have had podium placements at indoor and outdoor state championships this year. His son, Spencer, also medaled at JOAD Outdoor Nationals this year.

Yee’s nomination shared: “Steve instills in his archer the skills to be successful. Individually and instinctively he knows how to reach the archer on a personal level and intensely listens to debrief each one after tournaments. Steve has not only instilled discipline and independence in their archery goals, but life skills as well. These goals are indi-vidualized, achievable, and realistic. The patience and values Steve instills in his archers is remarkable. It is not just about the win, but more importantly how the shot feels and did they apply what they have learned. That is what con-tinues to drive our children to improve their techniques and approach to the next target, taking one arrow at a time.”

We are blessed to have Steve Yee as our head coach.

We are so proud of Steve and his hard work!

The Importance of Mental Management for Athletes

Research By Raley Morgan

“Athletes who diligently train their minds play their best more consistently, experience greater enjoyment and increase their odds of vic-tory.” (Afremow) “Many athletes struggle with applying mental skill to competition. They understand mental game strategies well, but fail to use what they learn when performing.” (Cohn) “Your mentality will either hold you down or bring you up. Strive to master your mind rather than being mastered by it, if you don’t, you risk losing every game before it even starts.” (Afremow) “I’ve seen so many gifted athletes not make it because they couldn’t handle the sport mentally. It’s such a huge part of any sport once you get to a certain level. Only those with a strong mind are going to compete at a high level. Only those with a strong mind are going to win.” (Sukel)

There are numerous mental skills that an athlete can learn and use to help enhance their performance. Here is a list of nine mental skills for successful athletes:

1. Choose and maintain a positive attitude. 2. Maintain a high level of self-motivation. 3. Set high, realistic goals. 4. Deal effectively with people. 5. Use positive self-talk. 6. Use positive mental imagery. 7. Manage anxiety effectively. 8. Manage their emotions effectively. 9. Maintain concentration.

These nine mental skills can be learned and can be improved through instruction and practice. ((Lesyk) A model for applying mental skills is to educate and learn through practice and repetition and then applying while practicing and competing. (Cohn)

The Performance Pyramid shows how these mental skills are used by successful athletes.

Level I: These mental skills constitute a broad base for attaining long-term goals, learning, and sustaining daily practice. They are needed on a day-by-day basis for long periods of time, often months and years.

Level II: These skills are used immediately before performance to prepare for performance. They may be used just before competition be-gins, or immediately before a specific performance action.

Level III: These skills are used during actual performance behavior. (Lesyk)

Here are five mind hacks from Olympic athletes that can help boost performance in any part of your life. (Gregoire)

1. Visualize the outcome you want. 2. Meditate daily. 3. Evict the obnoxious roommate in your head. (the one that tells you that you can’t do it) 4. Set smarter goals. 5. Go with the ‘flow.’

“Flow is defined as a mental state in which the individual transcends conscious thought and achieves a heightened state of effortless and unwav-ering concentration, calm and confidence. This flow state keeps pressures and distractions, both internal and external, from creeping into their minds and potentially harming their performance.” (Gregoire) “Going with the flow may also help the brain get to a state that helps maximize at-tention and self-regulation while downgrading stress. (Sukel)

“When you are an elite athlete, one of the best in the world, the physical differences between you and your peers are very, very small.” says Scott Grafton, a researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Dana Foundation grantee, who studies action representation, or how the brain organizes movement into a goal-oriented action. “So what really determines success? The way athletes are approaching their sport at the cognitive level.” “Shannon Miller, an Olympic Gold Medalist in gymnastics, agrees that mental preparation is key to success—and she says she couldn’t have gotten to the Olympics on physical ability alone. ‘The physical aspect of the sport can only take you so far. The men-tal aspect has to kick in, especially when you’re talking about the best of the best,’ she says. ‘In the Olympic games, everyone is talented. Every-one trains hard. Everyone does the work. What separates the gold medalists from the silver medalists is simply the mental game.’” (Sukel)
