Activity Register dogs eligible for WGC events

The panel discussed brachycephalic health, approaches across Europe, the need for a collaborative, evidence-based approach, including how the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme can help protect and improve the health of brachycephalic dogs now and in the future, and the importance of data collection and ongoing research into the complex Brachycephalic Obstructive Airways Syndrome (BOAS).

BRACHYCEPHALIC HEALTH WEBCAST

After discussion by the Field Trials Committee it has been agreed by the Kennel Club that pedigree dogs not registered on the Main Register, as well as crossbreed dogs, may now take part in a Working Gundog Certificate event. However, to do so they would need to be registered on the Activity Register.

Please note that whilst such dogs are now able to take part in WGC events when registered on the Activity Register, this

would not permit them to take part in Gundog Working Tests or Field Trials.

Wilson Young, Field Trial Committee Chairman, said: “It is very much hoped that this latest move will encourage more owners to try for their dog’s Working Gundog Certificate, the aim of which is to provide credible proof that the handler and dog are a competent partnership, with the qualities to fulfil

the general requirements of work on a shoot. The certificate may be gained at a variety of different events so that all aspects of a dog's work in the shooting field can be observed.”

VERSATILE SHOW DOGS: SGWC and SBCHT affixes may now be usedThe Kennel Club has announced that it is now permissible to use the letters ‘SGWC’ after a dog’s name on entry forms and in show catalogues to recognise those dogs that have gained the Show Gundog Working Certificate.

It has been acknowledged that a dog’s ability to perform its original purpose should be able to be reflected, and it

has been agreed that gundog owners should be encouraged to undertake this assessment with their dogs. This regulation change came into effect as of 1 July 2020.

In a similar development, the Kennel Club has also announced that it is now permissible to use the letters ‘SBCHT’ after a dog’s name to recognise those dogs that have gained the Show Border Collie Herding Test certificate.

Almost two-thirds of those who bought a puppy during the pandemic believed lockdown was the perfect time to get a puppy, with three-quarters also stating their dog was the best thing about lockdown. However, thousands missed red flags in the process.

Welfare organisations like the Kennel Club are also concerned about the consequences of these quick decisions as restrictions begin to be lifted.

Following this research, which illustrates a nation in need of puppy love yet with increasingly hasty buying habits accompanied by worrying consequences, the Kennel Club has launched its #BePuppywise campaign, urging people to take their time and do proper research

when getting a dog. The campaign provides advice, tools and resources, from videos to top tips for both potential owners to help them find the right dog and breeder, and prepare for their new family member, as well as those new owners who are struggling with their pandemic puppy, helping them care for their new best

friend as lockdown lifts and beyond.

The Kennel Club has produced a ‘litter in lockdown’ video with Dragons' Den entrepreneur and KC Assured Breeder, Jenny Campbell, which

shows puppy buyers what a responsible breeder

PANDEMIC PUPPY BOOM: PUBLIC URGED TO #BEPUPPYWISENew research released by the Kennel Club as part of its #BePuppywise campaign shows 41 per cent of those who bought a pandemic puppy said the main reason was to have a lockdown companion, 38 per cent said it was because they were at home more, and 27 per cent got their puppy to help them or their family through the difficult lockdown period.

At Crufts this year, Lyndsey Uglow with her dog Leo were announced as the winners of the Kennel Club’s 2020 Friends for Life competition, presented by James Middleton. Leo, a Golden Retriever, heads up a team of therapy dogs who visit the Southampton Children's Hospital to provide animal assisted intervention.

The Kennel Club is now searching for more heart-warming and inspiring stories

that showcase just how much dogs do for humans.

The winner of the Kennel Club Dog Hero Award, which is supported by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, will be awarded £5,000 for a dog charity of their choice. Runners up will receive £1,000 for their chosen dog charity, with all grants provided by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

The public are being asked to nominate dogs in the following categories:

• extraordinary life of a working dog

• hero support dog• best friend • child’s champion• rescue dog hero

Five finalists will be chosen to go forward to the final at Crufts 2021, where the overall

winner, selected by public vote, will be announced before the grand finale of the Crufts Best in Show award on 14 March 2021.

The Kennel Club would like to advise and reassure competition organisers, exhibitors and competitors that our Sports Committees are working on solutions to help enable shows, competitions and other events to resume when Government guidance allows and the current restrictions are sufficiently reduced or relaxed. We are also actively seeking Government advice and clarification on guidance already issued. We are looking at the safety measures that may need to be put in place, together with any Kennel Club Regulations which may need to be amended or relaxed to enable competitions to resume. As soon as more information is available, our guidance will be issued. We are aware that everyone is keen to resume their dog-related activities as soon as it is practical to do so, but please bear with us as we work towards helping you to provide the safest possible environment to allow for this. The continued health, safety and security of all participants at Kennel Club events is of paramount importance.
