Membership! Membership! Membership! Are you using YOUR Chamber
Membership to YOUR advantage to build YOUR business? The growth of YOUR business begins with YOU!
I often wonder if our mem-bers really take advantage of all the resources that our Chamber of Commerce offers its mem-
bers. I like to think of these resources as my back office marketing department. Yes, you as a Chamber member have your very own, hands on, MARKETING DEPARTMENT. If you need to advertise it, fast blast it, get a coupon in the hands of business owners, have something to give away, need help developing a business plan, talk about your business, help you with a ribbon cut-ting, have a business after hours and this list goes on and on. You already have a dedicated, profes-sional marketing department at your finger tips. If you have not been reaching out to Sandra our Membership and Events Coordinator, you might be missing a WHOLE lot of advertising and membership benefits that you didn’t even know existed for you……most of them FREE! I encour-age you this month to make an appointment with Sandra and see what all the Chamber has to offer.
This month I also want to encourage you to think about businesses that are NOT Chamber mem-bers. Joining the Chamber has many benefits as you already know. Can this non-member business benefit from being a member? ABSOLUTELY! If
you know of a business that is NOT a member and would like Sandra to visit them, please call or email her with the contact info, she will be more than happy to introduce the Chamber to them and let them know how the Chamber can help their business grow.
I look forward to watching all the Chamber members come together and help grow this won-derful organization that we call the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce.

Summer is coming to an end and everyone is gearing up for fall. Stores are filled with Holiday decorations and everyone is selling Pumpkin Spice something. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s time for all of that already. Personally, I’m not quite ready to let go of summer just yet. September and October are my favorite months to visit the beach! No matter what you’re looking forward to in the next few months, you can be sure that there is plenty to do at the Crestview Chamber of Commerce.
I want to give kudos to a couple of folks that are really making a difference to a lot of our members. Richard Harless and Kristan
Howard of Beach Community Bank are the co-chairs of the Ambassador’s Committee and they are doing a fantastic job! The Ambassadors are the group that welcomes all of our new and existing members through events like ribbon cuttings, after hours’, and other ceremonies. They are probably the most visible group we have because they not only make arrangements for those events, but they also work various duties at the monthly breakfast. It’s not all work though, Richard and Kristan have made it fun! They meet monthly for “Let’s Do Lunch”. Each month they choose a different res-taurant to meet at for lunch with the Committee (restaurants must be Chamber mem-bers). Pretty much everyone who works gets a lunch break… so why not meet up with some friendly faces and enjoy an easy networking opportunity? You will be welcomed with open arms. If you are a member of the Chamber, then you are a member of the Ambassadors Committee. Come check it out! Invite a friend! You won’t regret it. The
next Let’s Do Lunch is on October 13th at 11:30 at Hub City Smokehouse on Main Street. If you can’t make it for lunch, we have a regular committee meeting on October 26th at 8:30 at Community Bank (next to Wings of Fire). If you’re on the fence about it or have any questions, feel free to shoot an email to [email protected] or you can call me and I’d love to show you around.
Of course the Ambassadors Committee isn’t the only committee the Chamber has. We have several active committees that may interest you. Get involved. Ask Questions. Meet your neighbor. That’s what it’s all about!
I hope to see you soon!

CRESTVIEW — If you’ve missed the elegance, music, unlimited food and fruits of the vine at the city’s annual fall wine gala, there’s reason to rejoice.
The event returns Oct. 22 as a fundraiser for the new Crestview Area Sister City Program Scholarship.
There are several great reasons to dress up and attend the “Evening in the Garden” gala, organizers said.
“First, it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Mary Richard, the event’s planner and chef, said. “Secondly, it celebrates our 21 years of friendship with Noirmoutier.”
“And third, it’s going to benefit students right here in Crestview and Okaloosa County,” her planning partner, Lynn Yort, added.
The gala is sponsored by the Sister City Program and Northwest Florida State College an opportunity to dress up, pull on your dancing shoes and sashay under twin-kling lights in the oaks at the NWFSC Twin Hills Park campus.
As some of the original chamber Wine Gala organiz-ers, Mary and Lynn know a thing or two about puttin’ on the dog.
“An Evening in the Garden” is the inaugural cel-ebration for the Jardin de Noirmoutier—the Garden of Noirmoutier—dedicated to Crestview and the college’s 21-year relationship with the island community off the west coast of France.
“It’s a real community effort,” Sister City treasurer Pam Coffield said.
“The city of Crestview, several of our North Okaloosa County schools and community organizations including the Dogwood Garden Club have collaborated to show our visitors from Noirmoutier a memorable time, but also to raise funds for a unique scholarship program,” Mayor David Cadle said.
“This is an excellent date-night event plus an oppor-
tunity to meet our delightful friends from Noirmoutier, learn more about Crestview’s Sister City program, and support local high school and college students’ cultural education,” Sister City ticket chairwoman Janice Crose said.
“And eat some really good food and drink some really excellent wines,” Yort added.

An evening wine and epicurean gala Oct. 22 will be the garden’s inaugural event.

Don’t Let Lightning Strike TwiceBETTER BUSINESS BUREAU SERVING NORTHWEST FLORIDAMEMBER ARTICLE
Hermine reminded us that we are still in hurricane season for a few more months. The aftermath of a severe storm can bring out the best in people but it also can bring
out scammers. Be careful if you find yourself in need of help recovering after a storm. As a reminder, your Better Business Bureau serving Northwest Florida would like to
remind consumers and businesses of some of the most common ‘after-disaster’ scams that involve home and yard repairs or cleanup.
What To Do• Document Everything. Check with your insurance company about policy cover-
age and specific filing requirements. Save all receipts, including those for food, temporary lodging, or other items that may be covered expenses. Take photos of all damages and especially before any repairs have been made.
• Shop for Services. For major permanent repairs, take time to shop around for con-tractors, be sure they are licensed, check out references and visit bbb.org to obtain a list of contractors and their business reviews. Get at least three competitive bids for the repairs.
• Rely on Experts. Don’t trust a worker who shows up on your doorstep to announce that your home is unsafe. If you are concerned about possible structural damage in your home, have an engineer, architect, building official or other housing expert inspect it.
• Use Contracts. Request a written contract agreement with anyone you hire. It should specify the work to be done, the materials to be used, and the price break-down for both labor and materials. Review it carefully before signing or paying any money. Be sure that any oral promises are written into the contract, including war-
ranties on materials and labor.
What To Watch Out For• Door-to-Door Solicitations. Be wary of door-to-door workers who claim to have
leftover repair materials from a job ‘down the street’ or who do not have a perma-nent place of business.
• Phony Tactics. Unscrupulous roofing businesses, for instance, may make big prom-ises about repairs, or claim the homeowner’s insurance is sure to cover the cost. After you sign a contract, they’ll require you to make an advance payment. (Frequently the job is never completed and the insurance company denies the claim.)
• High-Pressure Deals. Don’t be pressured into making an immediate decision with a long-term impact.
• Requests for Up-Front Payments. Never pay for all repairs in advance, and do not pay with cash.
