1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient; love is kind; love isnot envious or boastful or arrogant orrude. It does not insist on its ownway; it is not irritable or resentful; itdoes not rejoice in wrongdoing, butrejoices in the truth. It bears allthings, believes all things, hopes allthings, endures all things. Love neverends.

Dear ReaderTwenty nine years ago when I firstworked as an Anglican priest, mysummer Saturdays were filled withmultiple weddings. We allowed justninety minutes between services: anyless and there was car park chaos. The only alternative to a churchwedding in those days was the localregistry office.

Today, getting married has become acommercial opportunity likeHalloween and Christmas. There aremore than 150 licensed weddingvenues in Norfolk alone (licensed interms of the Registrar being availableto conduct the legal part of theceremony.) Couples are persuaded tospend thousands of pounds on thebig day to meet the high expectationsthat have been absorbed from theirpeers or sold to them by the weddingindustry. Many couples put offmarriage indefinitely waiting for theday when they will be financiallysecure.

Personally, whilst wanting couples toenjoy their wedding day, I havealways encouraged them to focusmore upon the years to come. Howthey will find time in a busy life tokeep communicating their love andappreciation for each other, especially when children comealong.

Getting married in church does notneed to be expensive. If you comealong to our Wedding Fair onSaturday 19th October you will find awide range of stalls and displays by

local suppliers of weddingaccoutrements, goods and servicesand we will also be on handto tell you about how we can helpyou arrange an affordable and happywedding in your home town.

I’ve been married for a long time and it is adifferent experience every day!

Three quotations about marriage come to mind:

from the Bible (Deuteronomy 24:5) When a manis newly married, he is not to be liable for militaryservice - he must remain exempt for one year to behappy with the wife he has taken.

Kathleen Raine: Love can never be domesticated.

and Kahlil Gibran: Let there be spaces in yourtogetherness and let the winds of the heavensdance between you.

A prayer:

Father of all,in Jesus Christ you open to usthe treasures of your kingdom;guide us by your Holy Spiritthat we may receive your redeeming graceand reflect the perfect unity of your love, for you live and reignFather, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen.

TOWN TALKTown TalkMy occasional associations with ourHistory Society, the Museum of Gasand Local History and Fakenham[2534] Squadron Air Cadets broughtme regularly in touch with JimBaldwin. His dedication to thesecauses was second to none. Jim isstill around but you will have seenfar less of him since he suffered astroke which has seriously restrictedhis attention to familiarenthusiasms. So much so that hedecided to resign his commissionwith the RAF which stretches backfor over thirty years. Originally thecadets were based in West Raynhamuntil the base there shut down andtheir headquarters were transferredhere to the former FakenhamCollege site. For a period Jim was thesquadron's commanding officer, arole which enabled him to be part ofsome prestigious events such as theOlympic torch being relayed throughthe town. Jim's commitment has notgone unrecognized and he has beenawarded the Queen's Silver Jubileemedal and the Cadet Forces medalfor long service. Always trying tolook on the bright side of life, henow declares himself to be a proudmember of the Royal British Legion. As a community we all of us owe himthe utmost respect and must hopehis health continues to improve.

Parkinson's and WorkingHello! I was diagnosed with Parkinson'sDisease in June and would like to helpconnect others that live with thecondition. Hearing a neurologist say thewords "I am sorry to tell you that youhave Parkinson's" was devastating and,due to the current pressures on the NHS, Ifelt very alone with the news. Parkinson'sUK has been a lifeline, however, as I amstill of working age, I am unable to attendany local support groups that run duringthe day.And then I discovered the YoungParkinson's Pub Meet-Up Groupspecifically organised for working age folk- and at 55 any group entitled "young"was a must for me!The group meets on the second Tuesdayof each month from 8pm at a friendlycountry pub.Come and join us! We are a supportiveand informal bunch.Contact Karyn (our organiser) on 0776995 1369 for more information.

While the precise definition of a 'saint' is a person whois acknowledged as being holy or virtuous and, in theCatholic faith, has been officially canonized, incommon parlance any person may be described as a'saint' if they are recognised for having done manygood things in their lives. While George Edwards(1850-1933) a man who lived in Fakenham, has notbeen canonized, the fact that he helped found St.Anthony's church, the Eastern Counties AgriculturalUnion, became an MP, was knighted and awarded anOBE, singles him out as a man who may well qualify asa saint. His memorial is in the Queen's Road cemetery-and this month's photograph from the archive showshis funeral cortege in 1933.This picture is taken from a scrapbook kept by MabelNelson and was donated by Doreen Roberts.

Gerta Roberts - Project Linus Co-ordinator

Gerta's life has taken many turns but the thread runningthrough it is her creativity and talent and ability to take herinterests to a high level of expertise. Her latest venture is topresent an exhibition in the parish church displaying a range ofhandmade quilts, some historic quilts made by severalgenerations of one family in America, and others that arecontemporary. The exhibition will raise funds for Project Linus, which provides quilts in a range of sizes suitable for tiny babiesright up to teenagers who are very ill and in the N&N children'sward or the Neo-Natal Unit. The project motto is "A quilt is ahug you can keep" and the quilts are not only a great comfort tothe sick child but also their parents, who are often in despair. The quilt goes home with the child so they have it for ever.Gerta has always enjoyed working with textiles and much of herlife has been involved them in one form or other. Her parentscame to live in England from Germany in the 1920s and Gertalearned from an early age to be practical and self-sufficient. Weddings. Surely the happiest ofoccasions to celebrate somethingfundamental, yet full of meaning. Mydaughter's wedding was very special;but I'm sure you could all say thatabout a wedding, especially that of aclose family member.

But what are the origins ofweddings? The word wedding isderived from the Anglo-Saxon wordwed. The wed was the securityplaced by the family of the groom, with the family of the bride when thebetrothal was agreed between thefamilies. Wedding was the namegiven to the ceremony that followed.

Over the course of history we can seevariations in marriage laws. Forexample in 1076, The Council ofWestminster made it a law thatmarriage must be blessed by a priest, and in the 16th century, marriagehad to be performed by a priest withwitnesses present.

And today, if the wedding is to be inchurch, the banns of marriage mustbe read out before the couple cometo be wed. Banns are an ancient legaltradition and mark theannouncement of intent of eachcouple to marry. It gives anyone inthe congregation the chance tothrow doubt on the legality of theirmarriage.

But of course weddings take place ina number of venues, and must beheld by someone licensed to do so,such as a registrar. The marriagenotice, similar to banns, will beplaced on public display at theRegistrar's office at least 28 daysbefore the wedding.Currently same sex weddings cannotbe conducted in the Anglican Church, but this may change over time.

Today's traditional bride is likely tochoose a white, cream or ivory dress. This is to indicate purity. But blueused to be the symbol of purity andbrides, depending on their socialstatus, would wear blue.White was not chosen for a weddingdress until Queen Victoria wore whitefor her marriage to Prince Albert. Inthose days, white symbolized wealthand blue was a symbol of purity. ButQueen Victoria broke with traditionand was also the first royal bride tohave bridesmaids carry her train.

And what of the rhyme somethingold, something new, somethingborrowed, something blue? It is saidthat "something old" was a sure wayto ward off the Evil Eye and protectany future children the couple mighthave. It gave the bride anopportunity to wear a piece ofjewellery or clothing belonging to anolder relative. (Good old Auntie Lil!)Something borrowed was a good lucksymbol or piece of clothing from afemale relative who had a happymarriage with children. All this I noteis female to female. I wonder what abridegroom might think of wearingUncle Henry's string vest! While wearing or carrying"something blue" was also meant todeflect that pesky Evil Eye, the colourblue stands for love, purity andfidelity-three key qualities, it wasthought, for a solid marriage. And finally, whatever happened toshotgun weddings? In today's moreopen society having children withoutbeing married is no longer the socialstigma it was once. And couples too young to wed, without the parents' permissionmight have raced to Gretna Greenwhere a blacksmith was willing toperform the ceremony. Today youcan buy, the' Gretna Green package'for your wedding. How times havechanged!

In this season of 'mists and mellow fruitfulness', ChristChurch is celebrating the gathering of the harvest with abring and share Harvest Supper on October 5th in theOld School Hall. Entertainment will be provided by theFakenham Ukes. Entry is free, with a retiring collection todefray costs. There will be a raffle and the drawing of theGrand Draw in aid of the church. The following day willsee a celebration in the church of an Ecumenical HarvestFestival with the Archdeacon of Lynn as guest preacher,as part of his visitation which occurred earlier in theyear. The service starts at 4.00pm. We look forward towelcoming you to either or both events as well as allother regular services.

Christ Church is committed to serving the localcommunity in increasingly difficult and uncertain times. This is something that affects many small parishchurches which struggle to meet their financialobligations despite the best efforts of parishioners andthe Parochial Church Council. To illustrate this, pleaseconsider the following main points.

Christ Church has three major expenses. The Quotapayment paid to the Diocese for the overall running ofthe Church is £7,000. Insurance is a further £1,000 andelectricity is £500. This makes a minimum annualexpenditure of £8,500.

For Income, the return from collections including Gift Aidcontributions amounts to £3,700. Thus it means everyyear there is the need for fundraising events to generate£5,000 in order to break even. Christ Church is gratefulfor support from the local community which appreciatesthe presence of an open church in its midst but it isincreasingly hard to find new and imaginative ways toraise funds.

IT'S TIME FOR SOME GRAVETALKIt's not easy to talk about death, dying and funerals. However, if we neglect these subjects, we can be unpreparedfor our own death and the deaths of those close to us.GraveTalk is a simple way to help us come together to dothis in an easy relaxed way over a cup of tea or coffee, free ofcharge. This whole area is one where many people do find difficultyin expressing themselves, and through informal discussionswe hope you will find this time together helpful andrewarding. We will be looking at four subjects which will bethought provoking such as: LIFE - this will help us talk aboutwhat has been important in our own lives, and how we wouldlike to be remembered. DEATH - our own experiences ofdeath, and what we think it means.
