Holt Consulting Rooms

GOOD NEWS FOR HOLT!Following public consultation and a presentation, where 80% of people who responded to a survey were in favour, Holt Town Council is delighted to announce that it is now moving towards the purchase of Nelson House in Holt.

The historic house was once owned by Admiral Lord Nelson’s uncle and provided the perfect halfway house for him to stay when he travelled between his family home at Burnham Thorpe and his boarding school, Paston School in North Walsham. When returning home at weekends, Nelson would sleep in the attic of the house.

When the purchase is finalised, this listed building, situated in White Lion Street, will become the premises for a permanent Tourist Information Centre, a new, larger and much needed Town Council office and give space to develop a home to showcase the history of Holt. It is also envisaged that it will enable the opportunity for private meetings and storage facilities for historical material.Holt Town Mayor, Maggie Prior, said “Much research has taken place and many discussions have been had with North Norfolk District Council, the owner of the property and legal and professional advisors, and I now feel that we, and all our supporters, can allow ourselves to be excited about such a fantastic opportunity. We believe Nelson House is in an ideal location, with parking available at the new Gresham’s School Car Park, off Church Street, where there are bays for disabled badge holders and free bays for one hour. There are also two free bays in Church Street for one hour and several on Fish Hill and Bull Street and the bus stops are only metres away. The Town Council is confident that the building will be fit-for-purpose and will be an asset to both local people and visitors throughout the year.”

HOLT HONOURS AWARDSThe Annual Holt Honours Awards were presented at the Annual Towns meeting on 26th March 2018. It must be said that all nominations would have been worthy winners but a choice had to be made. The worthy winners, shown below with Town Mayor Maggie Prior were, in no particular order:

Davina Landers and Jon Mace. Davina and Jon provide an exceptional experience for children in Holt by organising weekly meetings and holiday activities for Beavers and Cubs.

Davina and Jon are highly skilled at engaging with children of different ages, backgrounds and abilities, whilst providing a safe and supportive environment. This enables children to work towards different badges, which keeps them motivated, builds their confidence and helps them form new interests. Davina and Jon generously volunteer their own time to ensure that children in Holt are given valuable opportunities to learn and flourish. David Bartle. David, centre, is a volunteer driver for the Holt Caring Society. He takes people, sometimes at very short notice, to Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, the doctors surgeries and Cromer Hospital, at all times of the day from early morning to late evening.David also contributed to the life of Holt by being a fireman for some time and a Holt Lowes Trustee. Lee Rix. Lee gives his time volunteering and helping others. He helped set up the cinema and worked on the Holt Community Centre website. He helps at the Youth Project and with the Poppy Dementia Group. Recently he has helped at the Holt Friday Club. He is reliable and generously gives his time with real enthusiasm. He is extremely good and kind with the elderly members of the Friday Club.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWSfrom County Councillor Dr. Marie Strong

[email protected] or 07920 286 597 Dear Residents of Wells Division, Mobile Library Service: The current budget for the county wide mobile service is £457,430. It is proposed to cut this budget by £200,000. I accept that a review of the service would be very useful, however I believe the first step should be to consult with its users, librarians, parish councils, community groups. If parish councils and other groups involved with mobile library users would like to write to me, asking that before a decision is taken local opinion and ideas are sought, I will share this view with fellow councillors including members of the Communities Committee. Coast Hopper: I know travellers have been anxious since Stagecoach made public it was giving up the Coast Hopper and other routes. However NCC officers have worked hard in confidential discussions to establish new arrangements with other operators and as Charles Sanders wrote to me, “Sorry it’s taken a while to release this news, it is always best to know what you can do before you make any statements that might come back to haunt you!” As a result of discussions, the Coast Hopper route continues with Sanders Coaches and Lynx operators. From Wells to Mundesley it will be called the Coast Hopper, Wells to Hunstanton (with links to King’s Lynn) it will be called the Coastliner. For details of this route and other routes which Stagecoach are surrendering visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/stagecoach. If you have a NCC pass for travelling to schools and colleges you will be written to confirming new travel arrangements. Anyone with a Stagecoach pass contact them direct regarding any reimbursement. Access v. Restriction to our Salt Marshes and Creaks: You may previously have heard of the national scheme to extend coastal access for the public to enjoy. However concerns were raised about people venturing out on the marshes. It is now proposed that the saltmarsh at Wells, Warham and Stiffkey be designated as “no access land”. Whilst being aware of the need for safety there is the potential for local people who have enjoyed the marshes for walking and boating for generations to be barred. (Some of us will recall the plan to zone off a section of Blakeney marshes where no humans

or domestic animals were to be allowed to walk.) It is important to read the consultation document to see what other villages may be affected. Having said that villages from Burnham to Holm have ‘common rights’ and Holkham, Morston & Blakeney may also have rights. Where local councils, interested groups and individuals have only traditional rights they will need to respond to the consultation if they are to preserve their traditional rights. These traditional rights are referred to in the North Norfolk Special Area of Conservation. I will be raising the matter with the Norfolk Coast Partnership and Norfolk County Council. The consultation closes on 16th May and can be found on: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/england-coast-path-from-weybourne-to-hunstanton-comment-on-proposals. Useful Websites: The snow and weather has taken its toll on our roads hence I have repeated below details for reporting Highways problems. On a more positive note you will see more broadband cabinets appearing so I have also repeated details for checking if you can or will soon be able to access fibre broadband.Reporting Highways Problems: Anyone can report Highways problems (not just potholes) direct to NCC. Go to https://apps.norfolk.gov.uk/HighwaysDefect/. Report a problem regarding Highways, Public Rights of Way or Norfolk trails. If you give your contact details you can keep updated on progress. You will find this should speed up repairs by getting details direct to highways. Better Broadband for Norfolk: www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk and enter your post code. Alternatively -https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/adsl.htm - Search by phone number if you are a BT Internet Service Provider (ISP) customer. Customers of other ISPs should use the Address Checker option. Once a fibre solution is available a ‘VDSL’ option will be shown. All good wishes,Marie, County Cllr Dr Marie Strong, Wells DivisionBarshams & Houghton St Giles, Binham with Cockthorpe, Blakeney, Brinton with Sharrington, Field Dalling & Saxlingham, Glandford with Letheringsett, Great Snoring, Great & Little Walsingham, Hindringham, Holkham, Langham, Morston, Sculthorpe, Stiffkey, Stody with Hunworth, Thornage & Little Thornage, Warham, Wells-next-the-Sea, Wighton, Wiveton

POST BOX ALERT The Clerk has contacted the Post Office about having a replacement box near the old Post Office. This was promised over a

year ago.It appears that the original contacts have all moved jobs and that the request was lost. They have promised to get straight onto it and raise another order but that will take at least 16 weeks. I have pleaded with them to see if we can get it sooner and they are going to try.The box will be a box on a pole and it will be near the bus stop due to services underground in other areas.

IDENTITY CRISISOne of the many funny stories told about President George Bush concerns a visit he made to an old peoples home. After speaking to a few of the residents, the President asked of one old lady, “Do you know who I am?”“No,” came the snappy reply, “but I’m sure if you ask at reception they’ll be able to tell you.”

SMOKERS RULEActor George Burns, famed for his love of fine cigars, was a long-time member of the exclusive Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. When Burns complained one day about the club’s new ban on smoking a sign was promptly posted for the comedian’s benefit: ‘Cigar smoking prohibited for anyone under ninety-five.’

NORTH NORFOLK TO HOST NATIONAL BLUE FLAG AWARDS CEREMONY

Blue Flag winners from around the country to be invited to Cromer

The annual awards ceremony which sees Keep Britain Tidy hand out Blue Flags and Seaside Awards to local authorities will be held in Cromer in May.Last year North Norfolk District Council had its most successful set of Blue Flag results when the district secured six flags, at East Runton, West Runton, Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham. The awards recognise the top tier of English beaches and are given out only to those sites that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. The awards will be hosted on Cromer Pier on 17th May. The suggestion that Cromer could host the event was made during last year’s Blue Flag ceremony, which was held in Bournemouth.Cllr John Lee, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “The Blue Flag is the quality mark for our beaches and they mean that those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards. I’m delighted that Cromer will host the Keep Britain Tidy awards event.”Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, said: “Every year the launch of our Blue Flag and Seaside Awards is a chance to celebrate the fantastic beaches around our coastline that are so loved by locals and the millions of tourists who visit them each year.We are delighted to be holding this year’s celebration event in Cromer and would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for hosting it.”

REEPHAM COLLEGE HITS NEW HEIGHTS IN PERFORMANCEReepham High School & College is delighted to have received confirmation that the A Level results of our students have put us in the top 1% of schools nationally. Each year Advanced Level Performance Systems (ALPs) provides schools and colleges with a detailed analysis of A Level performance against 2,890 schools and colleges across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.ALPs uses three key principles:• The simple idea that each of us is an individual and needs to be valued. Subsequently their performance

analysis looks at every single student and assesses their progress, rather than simply look at headline ‘whole school’ figures.• Aspiration, inspiration and motivation are key elements needed when working with young people.• Powerful leadership and high quality teaching and learning, coupled with high quality target-setting, monitoring, guidance and support are the elements that define good schools and colleges. Their latest judgement, made in recognition of sustained high performance over a three year period, puts Reepham College in the top 1% of post 16 providers nationally.

It is wonderful to receive this recognition; it represents a truly remarkable achievement and is testament to the efforts of students, the support of their parents, the skill of our staff and the strength of all other community connections with Reepham College. It is worth noting that Reepham College students come from all over the county, and not just from Reepham High School, so it really is an accolade to students from many areas of Norfolk.Headteacher Tim Gibbs and College Director Paul Beale would like to pass on their thanks and congratulations to students past and present, our college team, our parents and governors. They also recognise the contribution and support of prominent local businesses who regularly give up time to work alongside our students. Most importantly, together we are giving students the foundations for a great range of exciting and prestigious opportunities for their future. The College can be contacted at [email protected] for further information and information on admissions.

MORE PARKING AVAILABLE IN HOLT

Dear Caroline,Have you, like myself and many other motorists, visited Holt and were unable to find a roadside parking space? This is becoming the case more frequently, due to parking by drivers who just don’t care and abandon their cars in the middle of a space. Walk along any street in Holt and look at how the cars are parked. Large spaces are left, but not big enough for another car, usually at the ends of parking bays, just wasting spaces. As long as your wheels are within the white lines you are not committing an offence, so when you park, hop out and have a look to see if you are being considerate to others, it may also help you get a space one day.Yours sincerely,D Allison

CAR PARKING AT GRESHAM’S

Dear Caroline,Have any of your readers, like me, been overcharged when using Gresham’s School’s new car park off Church Street in Holt?A few weeks ago when I went to park there, the pay machine was out of order. However, instructions were given on the noticeboard for such a situation and explained how to text your details and pay for your parking by card, which I duly followed. But, upon receiving my bank statement and mobile phone bill recently, I found that I had been charged £1.20 per hour instead of the widely advertised £1.00 per hour and 40p for the text I had to send to authorise my parking!I might have been overcharged only a small amount but if many others have had a similar experience, it all adds up to a significant amount that has been wrongly taken. I do hope Gresham’s School will address this problem for when the pay machine is out of order; otherwise they are going to have a lot of disgruntled customers.Yours sincerely,R Wright

NELSON HOUSE DEBATE

Dear Caroline,What can I say as regards the meeting on Wednesday night, 21st March at the Hub?Firstly, let me be clear, I am not against the purchase of Nelson House for Council Offices, a Tourist Information Centre and a Museum. But what an absolute farce the meeting was. Public question time with no answers. All we got was the mayor saying

your answers will be in the presentation given by Councillor Neech. A presentation like no other I have ever seen. Five minutes Nelson House, 25 minutes of waffle. I learned more about oil banking etc. and we got a life story. I was half expecting ‘This is your life’ at any moment. We only wanted to know the facts. The other point I would like to make is why the mayor seems to have a vendetta against certain members of the public who ask awkward questions? It seems to me to be like a red rag to a bull to her.Come on, sort it out, let’s try and all work together to get Holt moving forward instead of slowly dying like it is.Yours sincerely,Paul Rix

SQUIRREL WOODDear Caroline,Thank you for the lovely picture on the front of your last issue, showing two of the Squirrel Wood Equestrian Centre horses in the snow. It is especially poignant as, after 23 years, the local landowner will not be renewing the Equestrian Centres lease. At the end of April the horses will be moving to pastures new.It is with much sadness that we leave Weybourne as it has so many wonderful memories. I am sure that over the years my staff and I have taught hundreds of people to ride. I know that there are even third generations appearing. How old does that make me feel!I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clients, holidaymakers, local businesses, schools, colleges and charities that have supported Squirrel Wood Equestrian Centre and Forest Lodge Riding Centre over the past three decades. Its been an amazing journey. The next chapter begins in the beautiful Worstead Estate. Squirrel Wood will be expanding and offering more to clients old and new. Please feel free to come and say good bye to the horses before we move at the end of April. Hopefully see you at Worstead.Yours sincerelyLisa Davies

HOUSES YES, BUT WHAT ABOUT

EMPLOYMENTDear Caroline,With many of the housing developments in Holt now in full swing and another large development still to start, when are we going to see some of the new industrial land developed?

Part of the Lovells site, off the bypass, has land allocated for industrial use. Next to it is land that has been allocated for industrial use for 35 years. Is the new land going to be the same as the older land and sit there undeveloped? When are the people of Holt, and the neighbouring villages, going to benefit from opportunities of employment in the town?Over the years large employers in the town, Florida Shoes, Holt Laundry, JW Automarine and Structure flex have all either ceased trading or moved to nearby towns. With around 600 to 700 new houses planned who do the authorities expect to live in them? We will certainly see the usual retired people, no problem there, and the second home owners, perhaps a problem there, but it seems we will not see too many young working people as the work for them simply is not here.It seems the youngsters will have to do as they have done for the past few decades, and that is move away from their homes in search of work. When will our councils do something to stop the land sitting empty and instead benefit the town and give some hope to local youngsters?Yours sincerely,R Baxter

DECLINING SPORTS IN HOLT

Dear Caroline,I am writing to express my concern at the sad decline of sports in Holt over the past year or so.Holt Cricket Club has, I am reliably informed, folded at the end of last season due to shortage of players. With due respect to those playing in the few matches I watched last season most of them were of a more mature age. Wondering why younger players were not coming through I looked into what sports the local schools taught. To my surprise Sheringham High School do not have cricket on their curriculum. This can only mean that their pupils will not know much about the game, so no surprise that they are not playing it when leaving school.Football, too, is struggling to get players who can play regularly each week. I appreciate that work is important and must come before sport but this is not helping. Too many other interests are also to blame.I know that Holt United Colts, in this current season, have used over 60 players in order to get their matches played. This team has been set up to encourage the younger players into the game but, from personal experience, their manager struggles every week to get just 11

players on the pitch. Both these sports are our National Sports so why are they declining so badly?Reasons please, to see if the local Sports clubs can halt the decline.Yours sincerely,David Wright

OIL ~ PLASTIC/SYNTHETIC

DERIVATIVESDear Caroline,There has been a great deal of fear expressed recently about plastic waste, especially found in food and water, by national newspapers and political sources. One wonders just how much is, or what is, contained in the packaging and food we consume? Many years ago in the 1950s I was given to believe that the intestines of pigs were the skins our sausage meat was placed into. Sausages, a national favourite food, but what is the outer skin made of? Synthetic or from animals?Perhaps a butcher reader knows the answer or a supermarket contact.Just how much of our food is ‘processed’ unobserved? Meat is usually hung by abattoirs for meat to mature and dry out, before dispatch to butchers. The meat dries to a lovely blue/grey colour but it is surprising how trays in a butcher’s show very red meat and juices. Are colouring and liquid

flavourings added? The 1900s may not be remembered for its wars but perhaps the ‘additives age’ or the ‘synthetic age’ and its bad effect on the environment.Yours sincerely,Chu N Tai

MARIE CURIEDear Caroline,I would like to thank all my 24 volunteers for giving up their precious time for turning out and standing in Holt on such a bitterly cold spring day. Also to thank the people of Holt for their generosity and support of Marie Curie.A special thanks to Robert McNeil Wilson who donated the daffodils. We raised an amazing £1,418.32, well done. Yours sincerely,Karen Massingham.

THANK YOUDear Caroline,I am writing to publicly thank the C T Baker Group for their donation of £250 to Sing Your Heart Out North, money raised, by the public, through the sale of plastic carrier bags.Sing Your Heart Out is a Norfolk charity that has been leading free, weekly drop-in singing workshops since 2008.Last autumn the North group was added to four existing groups spread round the county. We meet at the Lighthouse, Sheringham on Mondays at 2.00pm for 90 minutes with singing led by a professional singing tutor.

We are not a choir, there are no auditions, there is no need to read music but words are provided, and there is no need to come every week.Everyone is welcome, people who just like to sing, or would like to have a go, people who want to make new friends and especially anyone facing the challenges of such things as stress, anxiety or bereavement. The feel good factor from singing is infectious, ‘It makes you feel so happy and is good fun’.Further information can be found atwww.syho.org.We would love to see you after the Easter break, workshops recommence on Monday 16th April.Yours sincerely,Angela Mason,Committee Secretary,Sing Your Heart Out North

CHRISTIAN TEACHERSDear Caroline,Do Christian teachers not realise that by deceiving people with the Church’s mythical Christ that they are preventing them from growing into the true Christ, and thereby denying them the bliss of heaven?Or, are they only interested in preserving an offshoot of the ancient order of saints (Christianity)?Or is there some other human motive?Yours sincerely,Maurice Gray

OUR LOCAL CHURCHESSt Andrew’s Church, Thurning

St Andrew’s seems buried in the countryside, some miles south of Briston on the road to Salle. Thurning suffered increased isolation when Dr Beeching removed the south-bound railway line from Melton Constable. However the Church is alive and well and actively supported by the local community. An aspect of its history is shown by the nave’s furniture of splendid box pews. Those on the northern side are for the local gentry and farmers; those on the west are for servants of the Hall and Rectory. The labelling for the occupants is still intact and displayed.Unusual features of the Church include an elevated eighteenth-century pulpit incorporating stairs and a reading desk. The sanctuary is surrounded by altar rails on three sides. Paintings of the Creed and the Ten Commandments adorn the wall of the eastern window. A clock in the tower sounds the passing hours. The service of Matins (from the Book of Common Prayer) is celebrated on second Sundays and that of Holy Communion on third Sundays, both starting at 9.00am.

FROM THE RECTORY Emerging out of a long cold winter, is it me or is our society, our country and the world more divided than ever? Perhaps, I shouldn’t believe everything I read in the media, but it does paint a fairly bleak picture of the age we live in. Increasingly there appears to be more violence, bloodshed, hatred, intolerance, and conflict than ever before. Political rhetoric, Brexit, nerve gas attacks, the tit for tat expulsion of diplomats and the threat of trade wars are unsettling and who knows where they may lead. Given the present political climate it would be so easy to be filled with pessimism and conclude that we are all doomed! Thank God then for Easter! Like the warmth of the recent spring sunshine which anticipates the joy of the summer to come, and the launch of my boat, so Easter anticipates the hope of future glory. Yet not only does it anticipate things to come, it also gives hope for the present. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead which the Church celebrates for the fifty days of Easter and every Sunday on the Lord’s Day is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness, hope over despair, love over hatred and life over death. It is a reason to be cheerful, joyful in fact. By dying on the cross and rising from the tomb Jesus has won the victory. Death has been defeated by the triumph of love and this surely fills us with optimism that all shall be well. No matter what we have to face in this life Easter contains the promise that the risen Christ is with us always and affords us hope. Christ shares his risen life with us now, his risen presence in the life of the Church enables us to rise above the doom and gloom in the world, and calls us to share his risen life, bringing light and hope, love and life to others. Let us then walk in the light of the risen Lord who leads us into future glory and along the way let us seek to shed the light of his love on all those we meet, turning despair into hope!

Happy Easter!

Do you have arrangements in place should anything happen to you or your family? Getting a Will prepared is always on people’s ‘to do’ list but often this is overlooked.

A Will sets out how your affairs are to be dealt with after you pass away and prevents the sometimes difficult intestacy rules taking effect. If you have young children, a Will also allows you to appoint guardians and trustees.

Butcher Andrews can assist you with organising your affairs. In addition, for every Will, amended Will and Power of Attorney drawn up in April 2018 Butcher Andrews Solicitors will donate 10% of their fee to your choice of Age UK or E.A.C.H when you quote this advert.

FROM HOLTCONSULTING ROOMS

We are excited to announce that Suzanne Reid has returned to Holt Consulting Rooms. Suzanne is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner who combines herbal medicine, food energetics and acupuncture in her practice. She has also brought back her popular Kids Holistic Clinic with free initial consultations (pre-booking necessary) on Friday afternoons. She will also be introducing a PTSD clinic linked to Stand Easy, a Norwich charity, which uses acupuncture to ease trauma for veterans.Suzanne’s passion for healthy living, organic food and preventative and natural medicine led her to study Traditional Chinese Medicine. Her practice embraces this 3,000 year philosophy and medicine and helps people to understand their bodies and establish balance in order to enhance physical and emotional health and wellbeing. By eating the right food for them individuals are able to carry on and support their wellbeing. Food is one of the eight strands of traditional medicine alongside herbal medicine, acupuncture and bodywork. In China the skilled doctor should first understand the pathogenesis of the disease and then treat it with diet, using medicines only when food fails. Each food affects the body/mind in different ways. Throughout her 18 years of clinical experience as a NHS Approved Acupuncturist, Suzanne has combined herbal medicine, acupuncture, lifestyle advice and food energetics to develop holistic treatment plans for each individual. She uses an integrated medical approach for today’s chronic physical ailments, weak immunity and mental health issues. Suzanne can be contacted at Holt Consulting Rooms by telephone on 01263 711712.

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILTHE MAGIC FLUTE

The Magic Flute is to be performed at the Auden Theatre, Gresham’s School, Holt later this month, but who knows that the Magic Flute has neither beginning of days nor end of life. In Egypt it is symbolised by the ankh, it is invisible, and only seen by the mind’s eye. It holds every thing in its powerful grasp, it is time or motion and no one has any power over it. It is the seal upon the servants of God (Revelation 7:3) wise people are fearful of it and yet it gives eternal life. The Magic Flute plays all by itself, it is the Breath of life, it makes humans divine who accept its power and act upon it. From dead bodies it produce new born babies. It is the essence of righteous people, it is the rightness of things, it is truth, justice knowledge, enlightenment, wisdom and spirit. It sets people free from sin. The scientist is very much aware of it and acts in accordance with it, but religion seems to have forgotten it.For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

GRESHAM’S PUPILS SUPPORT WORLD

DOWN SYNDROME DAYWednesday 21st March was World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) and the Gresham’s community has been raising awareness of Down Syndrome with renewed vigour, joining people around the world in wearing #LotsofSocks as part of Down Syndrome International’s global campaign, and doing much more besides, including raising an estimated £3,000 for the charity. Dr Eva Edwards, mother of Year 4 pupil Lucas who has Down Syndrome, decided in the autumn (when Lucas turned 10) to do something slightly different to celebrate Lucas and raise awareness of Down Syndrome. Having decided to make and sell bracelets to raise funds, Dr Edwards came across Year 10 pupil Iris C. selling bracelets that she had been making for a few years at the school’s Christmas Fair. Iris and her mother Clare met with Dr Edwards to determine the design of a new range of bracelets, each one unique, yet unified by a common element, a small tag featuring on one side the numbers 47 and 46, to highlight the number of chromosomes that people with and without Down Syndrome have. The words ‘I am’ would feature on the other side. Dr Edwards explained: “Lucas answers many questions with the simple words ‘I am’ (as he thinks that this, along with ‘I can’ and ‘yes of course’, covers most situations well enough) and says ‘I am who I am and just love being me’. To us, these words really sum up our celebration of Lucas’s positive outlook on life, and so our #IamLucas47 campaign and the bracelets with the words ‘I am’ are about encouraging everyone to take their unique place in the world, to accept everyone’s differences, to always look for the very best in themselves and others, and let all that is especially special surface and shine brightly.”

Pupils were invited over a series of consecutive Saturdays during ‘hobby time’ to meet Dr Edwards and Lucas and, with the support of Iris, Clare, and Diana, Lucas’ oldest sister and Year 10 pupil at Gresham’s, to make the bracelets. With an overwhelming 60 pupils aged 14 to 18 keen to participate on each occasion, 800 unique bracelets were made. 600 bracelets have already sold, to pupils at the school and their families, the Edwards’ friends and family, local members of the community who have seen the bracelets on sale in Holt, and as far afield as Brazil, New Zealand and the United States, as well as a number of European countries, and approximately £3,000 has been raised for Down Syndrome International. Dr Edwards said: “We wanted to do even more to celebrate all of Lucas’s achievements to date. When he was born we didn’t know what to expect but, as he is half Swedish, he has been skiing since he was two and, for the past five years, has been taught by Aurelien, a wonderful instructor at the École du Ski Français. With the support of Aurelien and ESF, which closed a run in the Three Valleys resort for the occasion, Lucas took on a personal ski challenge on Wednesday 21st March, with slalom, off-piste and speed skiing. Lucas and all of the ESF team wore odd socks as gloves to raise awareness on the slopes too, and the bracelets are on sale in the resort. One of the highlights of the day was, quite coincidentally, when Lucas saw five Dutch adult skiiers, who also have Down Syndrome. Lucas doesn’t often see other people who have Down Syndrome and he quite happily recognised something about them and said ‘Mama, they are like me’.”

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGFast Food!

I love cooking and so am very happy to spend many an hour cooking up a storm, but occasionally its nice to have something that you can prepare quickly, but that is tasty and satisfying. For those days when you have forgotten to go to the butcher, or have run out of meat in the freezer, Quorn is a great alternative. I have used it for years, simply because I can cook it straight from the freezer and it is a healthy and high protein alternative to meat. Don’t get me wrong, we love our meat dishes, but nobody seems to mind when I cook Quorn dishes, so they have a permanent place on the menu. This recipe looks daunting, but in fact is super easy, as long as you prep all your veg first, so that you can just chuck it all in when needed. Its actually really quick to make and is in fact just a stir fry, renowned for their speed and ease. With lots of lovely fresh veg and colour, a pop of zingy ginger and apple cider vinegar which is good for the gut, this is a great, healthy dish that all the family will love and is so much tastier than the processed bottles of sweet and sour. Serve with some heathy wholegrain noodles or wholegrain microwave rice for speed and you’ll have a delicious, economical supper on the table in no time.Sweet and Sour QuornRapeseed Oil1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped finely2 fat garlic cloves, chopped finely1 300g bag Quorn pieces1 red and 1 green pepper, sliced1 red onion, sliced2 thin leeks, sliced into thin rounds1 tsp Chinese five spice mix1 425g tin pineapple chunks, drained but reserve the juice for the sauceFor the sauce:The juice from the above tin of pineapple chunks, plus enough water added to make up to 250ml1 flat tblsp corn flour1 tblsp dark soy sauce2 tblsp apple cider vinegar2 tblsp soft light brown sugar (or caster if you do not have it)2 tblsp tomato pureeQuick cook noodles or microwave wholegrain rice, to serve

Mix the cornflour with a couple of spoons of the pineapple juice and water in a cup, stir to mix and set aside. Mix together all the rest of the sauce ingredients in a jug, whisk and set aside. Prepare all the vegetables so that they are ready to stir fry. Heat up a good slug of oil in a large wok or deep sided frying pan and when it is hot add in the pepper, onion and leeks and stir fry for a couple of minutes. Add in the Quorn chunks and the Chinese five spice and continue stir frying, adding in the chopped garlic and ginger after another couple of minutes. Stir for another minute and then pour in the sauce ingredients and the pineapple chunks, mix well and keep it all moving for another 2 minutes and then add in the corn flour mixture to thicken. Turn down the heat and continue to stir whilst you prepare your noodles or microwave rice. Serve immediately.

NEWS FROMHOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE

Chairman’s Chat: Over the last four years, it’s been my pleasure to write a monthly blog in the Chronicle about something relevant to the Community Centre. This has been relatively easy because the Centre is a constantly-evolving part of Holt, where interesting events and developments regularly take place. The next ‘chat’, in four weeks time, will be written by my successor, who will be voted in at our AGM on 16th April. The Town Council, it seems, are determined to move out of the Community Centre into Nelson House, taking the Tourist Information Centre with them. If they do, we will lose a valuable source of revenue. We have not been told why they want to move but there may have been reasonable grounds for a discussion about creating more space at the Centre if that was the main consideration. Finally, you should know that any improvement that has taken place at the Centre over the last four years has been made possible by wonderful gifts from those who have generously donated funds for our use. We are very grateful to them. Please remember this if you are in a position to help. Our door is always open for donations!MartinHolt Community Centre Cinema: Our last film ‘Victoria & Abdul’ starring the wonderful Judi Dench, proved a hit with the audience, telling the true story of her friendship with an Indian servant. Her family was not amused! Our next film is very different, but beautifully shot, and tells the story of the unusual childhood of A A Milne’s son after Winnie the Pooh became such a hit. It is called ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’ and will be shown on Wednesday 25th April at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. There are refreshments in the afternoon, bar in the evening. Tickets are £5.00.Holt Community Centre Quiz: The next monthly quiz is on Friday 13th April, for teams of 3-5 at £3.00 each with refreshments in the interval and bar. Please tell Howard at the Centre on 01263 713427 or me on 01263 710779 if you would like to bring a team. The last quiz for this season will be on Friday 4th May.June Clarke, Cinema/Quiz Organiser.

The opening followed a grand in-store preview event on the evening of 14th March, whereby an illustrious guest list were given exclusive insight into the many new features and enhancements to the 4,500 sq. ft Food Hall. The refit at the Bakers and Larners of Holt Food Hall is the latest in a host of significant milestones in the company’s distinguished 250 history, commencing with the Baker family’s involvement in the business beginning in 1770, through to the appointment of Michael Baker as Managing Director in 1974 and the redevelopment of the store building throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Food Hall development adds a host of new features to the famous department store. Home to over 1,100 unique wine varieties and a cellar dating back to the 17th century, the Fine Wine department is proud to be one of the Norfolk region’s first providers of the Enomatic wine tasting system, allowing customers to sample the store’s finest vintages.New to the store is its bakery and patisserie department, supplying fine and freshly baked goods on a daily basis in-store. CALLING ON THE HOLT COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT THE GREAT PILGRIMAGE 90

The Royal British Legion Holt and District Branch need the community of Holt’s help to raise funds to enable two members of the Branch to attend the Great Pilgrimage 90 Event scheduled for August 2018. This summer the Royal British Legion is recreating its 1928 ‘Great Pilgrimage’ to the Great War battlefields, exactly 90 years after veterans and war widows first visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres and marched to the Menin Gate on 8th August 1928.Thousands of Legion members from across the nation and worldwide will be involved in the event, which includes visiting the same battlefields. On 8th August, there will be a parade of branch standards along the same route taken 90 years ago to the Menin Gate to commemorate the last 100 days of the Great War, and to honour a generation that served to defend their country, those that made the ultimate sacrifice and the men and women who were affected by the loss of loved ones.More information about GP90 can be found at: https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/community/calendar/remembrance-services-and-events/great-pilgrimage-90/The Holt Branch of the Royal British Legion is planning to send two of its members to this important event: the Branch Standard Bearer and another member to lay the wreath on behalf of the branch and the community of Holt. The financial cost of sending the representatives from Holt

will be £1,000. We have already raised £250 towards our goal; please help us to raise the remaining £750.The Branches of the Royal British Legion are essentially self-funded, generating funds by donations from members and fundraising events. We will be working hard over the coming months to raise the funding to allow Holt to be represented at this nationally significant event and thus any donation to our cause would be very much appreciated. If you would like to help us meet our financial target, cheques can be made out to the Royal British Legion Holt Branch and sent to Dr Lauren Griffiths, Honorary Secretary, Royal British Legion Holt Branch, at 1 Cherry Tree Close, Cley Road, Holt NR25 6GZ or you can give a donation via the JustGiving website: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Holt-GP90

Help knit or crochet up to 200 poppies for the Holt and District Branch of the Royal British Legion to

raise funds to support the Great Pilgrimage 90

The Holt and District Branch are planning to decorate a life size image of a solider with hand-made knitted or crochet poppies in late spring through to September this year to raise funds for the GP90 Event. We are therefore calling on those who can knit and crochet to assist us. If you have got a spare few minutes and some scrap red yarn from your stash, then why not help knit (or crochet) some poppies for the Holt and District Branch GP90 fund raising appeal. We can provide wool if you do not have any spare wool handy. You can use any poppy pattern you like, but they must be red. You could get hold of a free pattern for a knitted poppy from the National Museum of the Royal Navy and there’s a free pattern for a crochet poppy from Simply Crochet too. So that we have enough time to make the poppies available to the general public to decorate the soldier, we ask that the poppies are with

us by the end of April 2018 at the latest. For more information about the Great Pilgrimage 90 Event or to find out where to send your poppy (or poppies), please email Lauren Griffiths: [email protected] or ring me on 01263 663178 or 07850 649160.

HOLT SOCIETY TALKS AND VISITSOver 100 Holt Society Members and non-members, attended the superb, new Britten Building at Gresham’s School, on 15th March and were treated to two most entertaining and highly informative talks. Firstly, by Charlotte Crawley, Art Historian, who was convinced that Gresham’s School was displaying a portrait of a man who was NOT Sir John Gresham. In 2017 she had tracked down two 1550 portraits of Sir John and her talk told the story of her detective work, with images of this Tudor entrepreneur and his contemporaries. Which of the two paintings really is of Sir John? On one of the portraits, what is the word inscribed around the ring, on his forefinger? These and many more questions were eloquently answered by Charlotte. The result being that The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, who provide Gresham’s with educational funding from its charitable trust, accepted the evidence and Gresham’s have renamed and hung their newly acquired portrait. The second talk given by Simon Kinder, previous Head of History at Gresham’s, outlined the successful life of Sir John Gresham, who was born in Holt in 1495, how he made his huge fortune and why he founded Gresham’s School in 1555. Many questions were asked of the audience. Why was his death celebrated in verses: ‘The epitaph of that stupid and squalid Usurer, John Gresham, a soldier who shovels human manure…. Who is buried in hell’? These and many other mysteries surrounding the history of Sir John and some of his contemporaries, were all gradually revealed and explained in great detail, by Simon, with both humour and reverence. The roles were then reversed and the audience had not only the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers but also to see the two paintings side by side. The newly found one of Sir John and the other previously thought to be of him. The Holt Society would like to express its thanks to Gresham’s School

for the use of its most impressive and beautiful new buildings. On 20th March, a small group of 20 members made a visit to the National Trust Textile Conservation Studio, in Oulton, near Blickling (see photographs). Here, we were introduced to and were able to watch at work, the small team of accredited and highly expert conservators. The team undertake not only work for the National Trust but also for private clients. Our thanks and admiration goes to the staff, at the studio, for their work and for allowing us to see work in progress. The Holt Society AGM will be held on WEDNESDAY 11th APRIL in the Holt Community Centre, at 6.30pm.

A talk will be given by NNDC Conservation Officer Chris Young entitled ‘The Conservation of Heritage Assets’. As usual, an initial drink and light refreshments will be available, free of charge. Members and non-members welcome. No booking required. Should you wish to join The Holt Society full details can be found on our web site at www.theholtsociety.org you will be most welcome.

‘A FRIEND FOR LIFE’ IS HOW RONALD BLOXHAM DESCRIBES NORTH NORFOLK HEALTH VOLUNTEER

RICHARD FRYRonald was referred to the service through an integrated care coordinator from his GP practice to have social contact as he lived alone and also to support him to use his laptop to send emails and use the internet.Richard applied to become a volunteer with Voluntary Norfolk’s ‘North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service’. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.Following their introduction, Ronald joyfully reports that they have become ‘great friends’, quickly developing a great rapport. His partnership with Richard has helped him settle into residential care, a decision he made following a hospital stay, with Richard continuing to visit him. They both enjoy each other’s company immensely and look forward to seeing each other.During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics, and both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership.“Volunteering is always a two-way street” says Natalie Hickman, the Voluntary Norfolk

coordinator who made the introductions and supports the partnership. Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone across North Norfolk, who would like to become a Health Volunteer. If you are 18 years old or over, enjoy meeting and spending time with other people, and can put aside an hour or so a week to change a life and make a new friend, please contact Natalie Hickman on 01263 519454 or [email protected].

KELLING PROBUS CLUBKelling Probus Club held its monthly meeting at ‘The Dales Hotel’ Upper Sheringham. As always we enjoyed a tasty lunch with lots of chance to catch up with other members and enjoy the fellowship which is an integral part of Probus. The purpose of this month’s meeting was to hold our AGM and to plan our next year. Chairman Ken Murray welcomed members and thanked everyone who had made his year both enjoyable and satisfactory. Ken reported that membership had remained static, we had the death of Geoff Mather and illness of several members to note, but fortunately we had gained some new members in the year. He stressed that continued recruitment of new members was essential for the life of our club.Treasurer Tony O’Shea reported a year of steady income which balanced the outgoings and Secretary Andrew Hyatt reported a year of excellent after-lunch speakers and thanked Mike Clayton for his hard work in arranging them.Chairman Ken then handed over the chairman’s chain of office to Mike Clayton for 2018/19. Mike promised the club that he hoped to provide a similar year to Ken’s and thanked Ken for a great year of fellowship and speakers. Other officers were Vice-chairman Andrew Hyatt, Treasurer Tony O’Shea, Secretary Ken Murray, Press and Recruitment John Whittington. It was agreed that the club should have its own website to tell people about its aims, programme and officials. Our club meets on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker. Next month’s speaker is Andrew Hyatt talking on ‘Wine’. For inquiries on membership and how our meetings work call John Whittington on 01263 820333.

HOLT WIHolt WI March meeting was opened by our President Paula Hewitt, who welcome a new member, bringing our total membership to fifty-two. Glyn Charnock spoke to members about ‘Cleaning myths, hints and tips’, explaining many ways of cleaning items. He also clarified why a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar is far more efficient than one producing just suction. Carpets are damaged by the dirt and grit that get down between the fibres so any cleaning must remove this deep rooted layer, not just the surface dirt. He went on to explain the use of ‘Oxi’ products, and the properties of bleach, vinegar, lemon and how to use a crevice tool to remove lily pollen.Five members were presented with birthday posies. The Treasurer was delighted that the ‘Celebration of Spring’ event had not only been very enjoyable but had also raised just over £170. We will be holding a nearly new clothes sale on 26th May in the Holt Community Centre, so members were encouraged to contribute items. Five members will be attending the Federation Annual Meeting in Norwich to hear David Archer talk of his varied career and nine others the Nor’easter event in April for a magic show! Our next meeting on 18th April at 2.00pm in Holt Community Centre is about how the WI started in Sandringham. Why not come and join us?

A CONCERT FULL OF LIGHT

Sheringham and Cromer Choral perform at Cromer Church Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 28th April at 7.30pm to present a wonderful programme of 21st century choral music celebrating the theme of Light. This may be a ‘modern’ music concert but guaranteed to be highly melodic and no fear of dissonance! This promises to be an evening of beautiful music with a line-up of top class soloists. Musical Director, David Ballard says, “This might just be the project I’ve worked on as a musician that I’m most excited about. I don’t care if you like choral music or not, you need to come and listen. Great contemporary music, great soloists, and a choir who want to show you they love it. Be there.” David’s enthusiasm is infectious and no wonder when you consider that the concert will feature a major work by Howard Goodall CBE who will be familiar to many as the presenter of many television programmes with a musical theme and as the prodigious composer of musicals, choral music and a multitude of television theme music such as Blackadder, Mr Bean and, possibly, most popular The Vicar of Dibley. Eternal Light: A Requiem was originally commissioned by Rambert Dance Company as a choral-orchestral-dance piece and has quickly earned a firm place in the choral repertoire. Also on the programme are works by the widely performed American composer Morten Lauridsen, the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo and the Devon-based composer of sacred music Graham Keitch whose works are rapidly becoming popular and frequently performed by choirs and in cathedrals around the world. This is a concert not to be missed. Tickets £12.00 (£15.00 on the door), under 18’s FREE are available now from Sheringham Little Theatre box office 01263 822347 or online atwww.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

THE RUSTY PLAYERS OF OUNDLECONCERT TOUR OF NORFOLK

OUNDLE’S RUSTY ORCHESTRA HEADS FOR NORFOLK .... WITH

CANNONS IN HAND FOR THE 1812!The 45-strong ‘Rusty Players of Oundle’ are set to give two free of charge concerts over the final weekend of the spring holiday: Saturday 14th April at 4.30pm in CROMER PARISH CHURCHSunday 15th April at 4.00pm in BLAKENEY VILLAGE HALLBoth concerts will feature a ‘Desert Island Discs’ selection of 8 classical favourites, ending with a bang from the 1812 Overture. The audience are invited to bring their own cannons, but paper bags will be provided! Both concerts will be followed by a generous provision of AFTERNOON TEA.The orchestra was originally formed following a visit to Oundle by the celebrated author Alexander McCall-Smith, who plays with our Scottish cousin, ‘The Really Terrible Orchestra’, based in Edinburgh. The Rusty Players was founded by Oundle resident, and abandoned clarinet player, Chris Gill, and it has grown steadily to its present size with all departments filled. The orchestra itself has no auditions: if you have an instrument, an open mind and a music stand then you are in. We work our way through a vast selection of music from Brahms to Bernstein. Our members range from young 20 somethings to 70 somethings, some are retired, others use the orchestra as an escape from the rigours of professional lives, and a few as time-out from looking after children! Once a fortnight the daily routine is suspended while we indulge in an hour and a half of music making. This Spring, under the baton of our experienced conductor, Vince Davy, we are treating the good citizens of North Norfolk to our very own interpretation of ‘Desert Island Discs’. For two afternoons in Cromer and Blakeney, we are offering a varied programme, from the tranquil ‘Sleepy Lagoon’ to the rousing ‘Dam Busters’ March’; we will then ‘Sail By’ a few more classics before ending with the ever popular 1812 Overture! SPOILER ALERT.... our tour bus is quite simply too cramped to accommodate our in-house cannons so we will teach you to improvise with the aid of a brown paper bag! Please do bring friends and family to support us. To show our appreciation for your support, afternoon tea will be served after the concert courtesy of the members of the orchestra. We promise you a musical experience like no other.Further details can be found at www.rustyplayersoundle.org.uk.

WOULD YOU LIKE GRAVY? ONE LUMP OR TWO?

The Co-Op have stocked up on Rennies in preparation for yet another Briston School Dinner Night, an extravaganza of nostalgia and custard to help raise a few shillings for the Copeman Centre’s funds. Seriously, for just a fiver, you get a super two course hot dinner, plonked on to your plate by our glamorous (their words, not ours) dinner ladies, a nostalgic slide show on the big TV, a chance to pit your wits in our light-hearted ‘Top Of The Form’ quiz, and some live music to listen to or dance to.You don’t have to come along in school uniform unless you want to, but art mistress Miss Bea Haven will put a gold star on your blotter if you do (they can’t touch you for it) and will turn a blind eye if you get caught smoking in the dorm. You can book your tickets now by ‘phoning Carol the biology mistress on 01263 860844. You can even pay by credit or debit card if you wish and she will sort you out (she’s been sorting out the Headmaster for years). This trip down memory lane (mind the potholes) takes place on Saturday 14th April at 7.00pm and we would love you to come along and join us!

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWSDespite the snow and cold weather these last few weeks we have still had lots of fun and laughter.Neil Fippard kindly organised a Beatle Drive for us which was very chaotic! Heather had us jumping up and down in our seats with her Extend Exercises and Mick Leary played his Yamaha keyboard and had us singing along and laughing at his jokes! We managed a lovely trip out to Wells and along the coast which we all enjoyed and a visit to ‘Greens’ at Aylsham for a coffee and a scone in their sunny conservatory cafe.We would like to thank all the people who put their green tokens into our box at the Co-op, and to also thank the Co-op for their very generous donation which will enable us to take our clients out on some special treats! We all meet at the Community Room in All Saints Close on Mondays and Thursdays; it is warm, light and comfortable and you get a home cooked delicious lunch, and transport to and from your door in our own minibus. The other thing you will get is great company and loads of laughs - we are a very happy bunch! If you think you would enjoy doing these sorts of things with our friendly group, then ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday on 01263 861120 to find out more!

THEATRE’S TRIBUTE SHOW FOR STALWART SUPPORTER TONY

A seaside theatre is preparing to pay tribute to one of its biggest supporters who died last year. Tony Nelson, pictured left with ‘Snow White’ Rachel Waring, was well-known as Sheringham’s bushy-bearded, booming voiced town crier. But he was also a key player at the town’s Little Theatre, where he acted, directed and had two spells as chairman. His reigns included a critical spell when an early Lottery grant was secured in the early 1990s to revamp the venue, saving it and securing its future. On Saturday 21st April the theatre will host a tribute evening to Mr Nelson with a series of acts reflecting his life and loves. They will include morris dancers, choral singing, verse, jazz, shanty and classical piano music, and an extract from Harold Pinter.Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “This theatre would not be thriving today without the work Tony did in the past. He was a staunch supporter and friend and we are proud to host an evening in his memory.”Tony, who was a member

of the North Norfolk Players, acted in shows as diverse as farces and Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker, directed pantomimes and ran home-spun Saturday morning children’s shows. His widow Hilary, who will give an end of evening thank you on the night, said: “Tony was a natural performer and never shirked responsibility so, while he loved the Theatre, it in turn gave a lot to him.”The evening will be compered by BBC East weather presenter Julie Reinger who was invited to the theatre by Mr Nelson, resulting her donning a pink tutu as Fairy Kindheart in the 2004 panto. Mr Nelson died aged 78 in June last year just hours before it was announced he had been awarded a BEM for services to the community in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. He was also involved with the carnival, Shantymen singers, and Lobster Potties morris dance side. A bass choral singer, he also loved classical music.A Tribute to Tony Nelson, Sheringham Little Theatre Saturday 21st April. Donations on the door to theatre improvement funds. For more information call the box office on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

Colin Westgate came from Mersea Island to show some of his photographs to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 21st March.A very eminent and well-known photographer, Colin has been taking photographs in the landscape since 1959. Although he works in both monochrome and colour, the majority of those he showed were moody monochrome pictures with emphasis on dramatic skies and unusual foregrounds. Colin is enthusiastic to ‘work’ on his images to enhance the highlights and the shadows for maximum effect. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, a Master of the International Federation of Photographic Art and was elected a Member of the London Salon in 1990. Colin also arranges and leads practical workshops and photographic holidays to Iceland, Ireland and Scotland among other places. He also represents Fotospeed, suppliers of photographic papers for high-grade printing.Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected] or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL CONTINUES TO SEEK

VIEWS ON LEISURE CENTRE PROPOSALS

Further opportunities to give feedback following a successful consultation day in Sheringham

There is still time for residents and the wider community to share their views with North Norfolk District Council about plans to build a multi-million-pound, state-of-the-art leisure and fitness centre in Sheringham.A consultation event on Thursday 22nd March proved to be very successful, with hundreds of visitors giving their feedback, but NNDC is keen to hear more people’s views, and they can be submitted via www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/NewSheringhamLeisureCentre until 8th April.NNDC has agreed to provide £10.7m of funding for the new centre to replace the existing facility, Splash.Members of the public had the chance on 22nd March to learn more about the proposed facilities, view artist impressions of the current proposals, and comment on the design concept, site layout and overall impact of the proposed project.Splash at Sheringham was opened in May 1988. A condition survey conducted last year highlighted an urgent need to invest in a new facility to ensure access to leisure services is secured for the future. Cllr Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure Services said: “This project highlights our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of North Norfolk’s residents. I hope that as many people as possible take the opportunity to share their views with us, to help make sure we get it right.”Cllr Judy Oliver, Member for Sheringham South, said: “I hope residents in and around Sheringham will be among those who make most use of what will be a first-class new facility. It’s really important we have as many views as possible to help us meet everyone’s wishes and expectations.”Cllr Richard Shepherd, Member for Sheringham South, said: “I spoke to many people of several ages at the event, and I did not hear one adverse comment. I am hugely supportive of the gargantuan effort being made to make this work for the folk of North Norfolk and it should be a great future.”

ENTRIES OPEN FORNNUH CHARITY BIKE RIDE

It’s time to gear up and get ready as entries have now opened for this year’s NNUH bike ride in aid of the N&N Hospitals Charity. On Sunday 15th July cyclists will be taking to the roads of Norfolk for the NNUH Tour Sportive which offers 100, 60 or 30-mile routes, all of which follow sections of the Tour of Britain and the Women’s Tour. All routes start and finish at the hospital on Colney Lane and will take

participants through the quiet roads in South Norfolk and North Suffolk, which provide scenic beauty along the way and routes suitable for both experienced and novice cyclists. This is one of the few sportives where your entry will directly

help support the hospital, and up to £9 per rider entry goes directly to the charity.Frances Bolger, Director of Nursing at NNUH, said: “Once again, hundreds of staff members will be joining members of the public to take part in the fantastic event which raises funds for the hospital charity.Whether you are a new cyclist or more experienced, this is the perfect challenge for everyone to help push your fitness or get that first 100-mile ride under your belt and there are a choice of routes for experienced and novice cyclists alike.”Louise Cook, NNUH Fundraising Manager, said: “This is a hugely popular event and we hope that lots of cyclists, including those who may never have taken part in a cycling event, will sign up and join us on the day.All money raised helps fund additional facilities to improve patient and visitor experience in the hospital and all funds raised help make a huge difference to us. For example, the funds raised in the past have gone towards the fantastic renovation of the Jenny Lind children’s playground.”If riders want to raise additional sponsorship, they can choose any hospital department or ward to benefit from these donations, such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, cardiology or stroke patients, or many others. As well as the charitable donation, the entry fee provides free feed stops along the route, electronic chip timing, fully signposted routes, full medical and mechanical support and transport back to event HQ for anyone unable to finish their ride. The start and finish is at the main NNUH Colney Lane site where free car parking will be available.

ROWING TOWARDS BLAKENEY POINT

The rowers’ smiling faces, shown in the last edition of the Holt Chronicle, were a good indication of the joy of rowing with your local club. And the fun continues! By the time you read this article, both skiffs, Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan, will be in position in the boat park on Blakeney Carnser ready for summer rowing. The brisk winter outings on the Norfolk Broads will be pleasant memories as club members prepare for the new season. Thanks to Cox’s Boatyard, Barton Turf, for giving the skiffs a good home during the colder months.Rowing at Blakeney has already taken place, but the main season will start with an event on the Carnser on 5th April at 9.00am. The boats will be blessed before the morning’s row and anyone who would like to be part of a crew will be very welcome. Come along and have a look. Skimming across the water towards Blakeney Point is an experience not to be missed. Guidance is always available from safety aware, experienced club members.Once the season is in full swing, a skiff crew will venture out from Blakeney at least once a week. Sometimes both skiffs are on the water. These are particularly enjoyable occasions after which rowers may well meet in a local pub for some far ranging conversation. You too could be part of this whole experience. Join the Crabbers and discover the joys of rowing. If this brief outline of Blakeney Rowing Club appeals to you then phone Tom on 01263 761750 for further information. Although there are competitive events during the coming months, there is no requirement to take part in these. The main purpose is to enjoy the growing sport of skiff rowing in good company. Your first outing will be taken at your pace and no previous experience is necessary.Let’s look forward to the summer on the water.Barry Howes

GETTING OLDI didn’t make it to the gym again today. That makes five years in a row.The biggest lie I tell myself is... ‘I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it’.I don’t have grey hair; I have ‘wisdom highlights’! I’m just very wise.If God wanted me to touch my toes, He would’ve put them on my knees.Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice. At my age ‘Getting lucky’ means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for.Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That’s common sense leaving your body.

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

I was staying at a hotel in Bristol a couple of years ago. Upon retiring for the evening, I noticed that my bathroom fan was still running. After some investigations and failed attempts to find out why it refused to go off, I contacted reception. The night porter arrived and made a 30-second visit to the bathroom. The noise stopped.“That was quick” I said. “What was the problem?”“I switched off your vibrating toothbrush, sir,” he replied.During a bout of snow and ice last winter, a local store ran out of Wellington boots. The shoe department was on the first floor, so the management decided to place a notice halfway up the stairs saying,“No wellingtons.”To their surprise, they later found a row of wellingtons at the top of the stairs, which customers had removed before setting foot on the first floor.I recently took my grandmother on a rare train journey to London. When we got to the front of the queue at the ticket office, the booking clerk said to her, “That’ll be £48. Change at Crewe.”She looked at him sternly and retorted, “I’ll have my change here if you don’t mind!”My daughter, having just passed her driving test, took me for a spin.I was quite nervous, and at one point I had to tell her that she’d just made an illegal turn.“It’s OK, Mum,” she replied. “The police car behind us has done the same thing.”

SKI TEAM WINS SILVERIN ITALY

A school ski team from Gresham’s in Holt recently took part in the IAPS Ski Championships in Passo del Tonale, Italy and achieved 2nd place in their age category. This was the first time the school has entered this event and the pupils who took part were Percy Dyter and Teddy Dyter from Melton Constable, Freddie Browne and Frederick Temple from Holt. However, disaster struck on the second day of the event with Freddie Browne sadly injuring his leg. This meant that the team was reduced to three and they would have to achieve clean times to qualify for a medal. The winning teams are calculated by taking the fastest three times from the team overall. It also meant that pressure was mounting on the youngest member of the team, nine-year-old Percy Dyter to perform well. Despite this, the boys skied brilliantly, kept their calm, and fully deserved their second-place position. The school team was beaten to top place by an experienced Swiss team from Aiglon, a school which is based in a Swiss ski resort where the children can ski every day. However, despite the high competition the boys went on to beat twenty-two other UK-based schools into second place.Richard Brearley, Deputy Head of Gresham’s Prep said, “I was delighted to hear that our U13 ski team was so successful at this event particularly as it was their first time at the championships. It is testament to all their hard work and training and they should be very proud of their achievement.”

WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONSOn Wednesday 28th March, 25 members of Weybourne Good Companions Group spent a rainy afternoon in the Village Hall, watching a very enjoyable slide show presented by Brian Hedge. This featured old photographs of Sheringham, some dating back to the 19th century and was accompanied by an informative commentary. It was fascinating to see how Sheringham had transformed from being a small fishing village, to a popular tourist destination, following the arrival of the railway. In the early days, many of the fishermen rented out their cottages to tourists during the summer months and lived in outhouses in their gardens. They made more money during these few months than they did all year from fishing. There were also several large hotels built in the town to accommodate the many tourists, although most of these have now gone, or been redeveloped. We all agreed we would like to see another of Brian’s presentations on a future occasion, as it was so interesting. The Group’s 21st birthday party was cancelled in February, due to the wintery weather, so we all enjoyed the delicious birthday cakes, which had been made for the occasion by Sandy Bailey.Weybourne Good Companions meet on the 4th Wednesday of every month and our next meeting on 25th April will feature ‘Timescape - Music from our Era’ and a brief AGM. All welcome!
