Caregiver Stress: Maintaining a Sense of Balance

By Ava M. Stinnett

More than 65 million family caregivers, 29% of the U.S. adult population, providean average of 20 hours of care per week; some provide care around the clock. Caregiving isstressful work, and the physical and emotional toll can be overwhelming. Familycaregivers tend to have at least one thing in common: They forget to take care ofthemselves.

Extended periods of providing care can affect a caregiver in many ways, includingsleeplessness, reduced ability to concentrate, mood swings, depression, and evena weakened immune system. How can you lighten the load and nurture yourself asa caregiver?

First, prioritize self-care and don’t be afraid to share your wish list. Whether it’sgoing to a movie, taking a walk, meeting a friend for lunch, or having someonecook a meal or help clean the house, even a short break can provide a change inperspective and allow you to recharge your batteries. While many caregiving tasksmight be things you want to do yourself, there are plenty of other chores thatpeople could take over, such as grocery shopping, yardwork, and taking your

loved one to their next medical appointment.

Sometimes it can be difficult to ask for and accept help. Try to remember thathelping others makes people feel good. Even just having someone sit with yourfamily member while you take a break can be beneficial. In addition, manycommunities have eldercare or respite services, which can give you some time foryourself while providing a positive impact on your health and wellness. For yourphysical health, the Mayo Clinic suggests these tips:

Eat healthy foods.

Get enough sleep.

Go for a daily walk.

Take your medications as prescribed.

Keep preventive medical appointments.

When feasible, remember to connect with friends, relax with meditation, or workon a hobby such as tending a garden. Support groups can help you feel less aloneas you work to manage your time, energy, and patience. Support group membersknow what you’re going through and can help by offering some new strategies tomanage your caregiving responsibilities.

articles we hope you are feeling betterinformed of the pitfalls of robocalls andsweepstake scams. By now you mayhave even had an opportunity topractice hanging up without speaking asingle word!

This month we are learning about“Grandparent” Scams.

There are several variations of this scam. In the most common version, the victimwill receive a call from someone claiming to be their grandson, saying he hasbeen in an accident. The caller will instruct the victim to purchase iTunes giftcards to allegedly pay for medical treatment or property damage. Afterpurchasing the iTunes card, the victim will be asked to read the numbers on theback of the cards to the person on the phone. This allows the scammer to stealthe funds off the card.

In another version, the victim will receive a call from someone claiming to be theirgrandson with news that they have been arrested, usually outside the UnitedStates. They will say they need money for bail, or an appearance bond and/oradditional money to pay a fine for negligence.

In yet a third version, instead of the “grandchild” making the phone call, the conartist will pretend to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer or doctor. It iscommon for the con artist impersonating the grandchild to talk briefly with thevictim and then hand the phone over to an accomplice impersonating an authorityfigure. Because the exchange with the alleged grandchild is so brief, it will bedifficult for the victim to recognize that the voice on the phone does not belong totheir grandchild.

Although the grandparent scam is frightening, do not fall for it. Please hang upthe phone and contact a family member who can help alleviate any concerns ofyour grandchildren’s well-being.
