Since 2016, the “Creative Travel to Japan” events have been an opportunity to bring the wide variety of the Japanese culture to the attention of an international audience. This year’s exhibition entitled “Creative Travel to Japan 2018” will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris between 15th and 19th October 2018. It is organized in the framework of “Japonismes 2018”, in which a large number of Japanese cultural events are organized in the beautiful City of Paris, until February 2019.

The theme of this year’s Exhibition is “Washoku”. This includes UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage definition, where it is described as: “Washoku, traditional dietary cultures of the Japanese, notably for the celebration of New Year”. “Washoku” captures the essence of Japanese life: quality, balance, well-being, connection, - a fundamental spirit of respect for nature combined with a sustainable approach towards natural resources, provides a multitude of culinary and decorative uses of natural produce, often reflected in the style of presentation.

- Centered on Local Japanese Gastronomy -

The Exhibition will present local communities in a unique light through the diverse cultures and tastes of the prefectures of Fukushima, Saitama and Okinawa, and explore the origins of modern flavours through the story of Kansai. Japanese produce bearing the GI Mark, an internationally recognized symbol of high quality and local authenticity, will be on display.

Date: Wednesday 17th October 2018 1pm to 5pmVenue: UNESCO Japanese Garden (tentative), Ségur Hall and Pas Perdus Hall*In the event of bad weather the ceremony will be held indoors.

Peace is the central theme of the Japanese Garden at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. It wasdesigned by Isamu Noguchi with “nodate” in mind – the outdoor tea ceremony which hasbeen part of the Japanese Culture since 1587. The intention behind nodate is to enjoy, share and embrace the beauty of nature. On this occasion we are honoured to present a Grand Tea Ceremony made possible by the special skills of farmers and tea masters from five selected Japanese tea-producing areas. Several teas from different Japanese mountains and fields, with a wide variety of tastes, will provide a unique experience, enabling the participants to savour natural flavours and to discover, or restore, a feeling of unity with nature. Wishing all our guests to enjoy the shared experience of peace of mind through gently supping tea, transcending language, and providing an easeful path towards a future Creative Journey in Japan.
