teams update by Sue Hollingworth

The NLG Area 3 Winter Dressage competition is to take place at Bold Heath Equestrian Centre on Saturday 26 November 2011. This year there is to be an extra Prelim class which will be a qualifier for Windsor. If you are interested in being on a team for this event please contact Vicky Hollingworth on 07773 432471 or e-mail [email protected]. [Please note that you need to contact the Teams organisers to notify them of your interest – they cannot ring all ODRC members to find out who is interested.]

As always three stewards will be required to enable us to send teams to this event, so if you would like to volunteer as a steward please contact Vicky Hollingworth on 07773 432471 or e-mail [email protected] . You may be aware that we have had difficulty finding enough stewards for recent team events, so those who wish to be on a team for a particular discipline will be asked to volunteer as a steward for a team event in which they are not competing.

Beach ride – 14 august 2011 by Jade Taylor

On Sunday 14th August, a small group met at Formby Beach for the annual beach ride. The group consisted of Ann and John Thompson, Pam Hemmings, Charlie Madeley, Alison Read, Lesley Sanders (who unfortunately couldn’t ride as her horses had both managed to injure themselves a few weeks earlier, but had very kindly offered to take us in her horse box) and myself from ODRC, and some friends which took the numbers up to nine. As we tacked up and walked over the dunes to the beach, we were all very excited and the horses were too, so much so that our friend Sarah Gittins’ pony couldn’t help but get down to roll in the sand …. three times! The weather was perfect as we set off cantering up and down the beach, and the horses were all very well behaved. We even managed to get them all in the sea to play in the waves, although it took 5 minutes of us all standing in a line just on the water’s edge, until Pam’s brave horse ventured in and the others then followed suit. We all had a lovely day, which was topped off with a picnic in the sunshine, some hay for the horses and ice cream for the riders.

Jill Bradley Memorial Mini ODEJill Bradley Memorial Mini ODEJill Bradley Memorial Mini ODEJill Bradley Memorial Mini ODE ---- Sunday, 7 August 2011Sunday, 7 August 2011Sunday, 7 August 2011Sunday, 7 August 2011 By Sue Hamer**, Show Organiser

**[Ed: We owe Sue Hamer (from now on to be known as Sue Burnett!) a special thank you for organising this show. How she stayed sane, I have no idea, because in addition to planning and running this show (& the Combined Training Shows), Sue was also organising her own wedding for the following weekend! Our sincere congratulations, Sue, on your wedding, and many thanks for all your efforts on behalf of the Club.] Firstly I would like to thank ODRC for allowing me to organise and run the show and a huge thank you to everyone involved, judges, stewards/helpers and competitors, the day would not be possible without you.:- Judges: Vicky Tibbot, Dawn Rothwell, Debbie Sykes Stewards Kathryn Crawley, Amy Crawley, Jean Brookes, Cathy Heaven, & Helpers Sue Howes, Kathy Bradley & friend, Jill Dinsdale, James Burnett,

Jack Burnett, Peter Carter, Cath Calvert, Janet Oddie, Sue Hollingworth, Keith Chapel, Leah Barnes, Cameron Barnes, Sue Toone (apologies if I’ve missed anyone’s name off, please let me know)

I would also like to thank my sponsors this year who were:- Jolly Jodhs Equestrian Supplies Ian McConnell Veterinary Surgery Saddleworth Livery Sam Sagar, Farrier SHhh! Event Planning & Promotions Baileys Feeds Feedmark Unfortunately, we didn’t have the luck with the weather that we had had in 2010 and the heavens opened! It rained all morning, however, not to be fazed, everyone stayed within the spirit and carried on. Unfortunately, as the rain continued a few competitors decided to withdraw from the showjumping/xc phase as they did not want to risk injury to either themselves or their horses. For the final class we had to make the decision whether or not to run the showjumping/xc phase and, following discussions between judges, stewards and competitors, it was decided that we would carry on. Everybody tried their best and seemed to really enjoy themselves. Whilst the weather did put a bit of a dampener (apologies) on things, it did not change the atmosphere which was fantastic - everyone encouraging each other and supporting each other . The Biggest Smile Award proved a really hard decision, once again. It could have gone to everybody on the day, but unfortunately there is only one prize and after discussion with judges and stewards, it was decided that Lissy Scholes on Boston was to receive this prize. Lissy, I am told, is not very confident and doesn’t like jumping her little pony and asked if all of the fences could be put down. I was very happy to do this as this show is all about encouraging people. She did have a little run out but finished the course with a huge smile and thoroughly enjoyed herself. She came up to me afterwards and said “I really want to do that again”. These words I found very encouraging.

They braved most of the day but unfortunately the rain was a little too much and they decided to call it a day early in the afternoon. The Paramedic thankfully had a very quiet and boring day which is always fantastic news. Congratulations to the winners of the three classes: Jayne Longden on Dawn for the Intro, Jenny Davidson on Kizzy for the Pre-Novice and Sue Hollingworth on Xander for the Novice. Well done too to everyone else who took part. Finally, with everyone’s help and after deduction of the Paramedic’s fee, we managed to raise a whopping £550. Well done and thank you all so much and here’s to 2012!! Love Sue xx

rIDDEN, IN HAND AND WORKING HUNTER SHOW - 28 August 2011 By Tracy Shaw, Show Organiser Hi all,

Firstly I would like to thank Paul Dodkins and Peter Carter who were the only two helpers to help us set the jumps up nice and early! (well, they more or less set the whole course up by themselves! Thanks so much, guys!)

Thank you to all the helpers throughout the day whom I will try to mention by name but if your name is not mentioned then I do apologise:

Lorna Nicolson, Katie Donald, Cathy Heaven, Helen Howard-Smith, Helen Furness-Mills, Anne Thompson, Cath Calvert, Bridget Tibbot, my friends Dawn and Libby and my other half, Damian.

You all make the day so much easier!

I would like to apologise also for the delay in booking in on the morning of the show as we had to clear out the back of the wagon to fit the table and chairs in!

Wow! How busy was it?! Even the butty van ran out of tea and bread! I know there was a lot of waiting around for some classes (which again I apologise for) but so many were clashing and the judges were kind enough to wait for each other to finish! For the first time to my knowledge, the arena was the last ring to finish this time! (This might have had something to do with the Mountain & Moorland with 15 entries in the In Hand class! – where did they all come from?!?)

Our judges did a great job all day and they really did help each other! So thank you very much to Lyn Hayden-Williams and her steward, Charlotte, and to Jane Miller with her steward, Jodie.

Well done to all who were in the ribbons and to all who qualified for the Blue Chip Finals in September. And may I just add:- when you get your entry form on line or by post, the closing date will say “before 19 August 2011”. Please ignore this as I managed to persuade them to let us do late entries! So please state “ODRC” as the place where you qualified.

Well done to all our champions and reserves on the day, including Martha Tibbot, Amy Neville-Cooper, Lorraine Worrall, Adam Harrison and Kim Salmon.

Thank you so much also to Harol Williams for the photography – you did a great job.

A special thank you too to Liz Longden who has kindly donated a new trophy for “Overall Best Mountain and Moorland” to be awarded on Presentation Night.

The details of the website will be e-mailed to members and a link will appear on the ODRC website to enable you to find them.

Friezland parking problem goes on!!– please avoid the gates!

If members have to park on the top car park (on the right hand side as you approach the gate to enter the arena area) please please please would you remember to keep clear of the two gates leading to the bridle path from that car park, ie on your left after you enter the car park and at the far end. Please do not obstruct these gates as they may be required for access (24 hours a day) in case of accidents on the bridlepath and for access by the owners of the land adjacent to the bridlepath. We still have our Showjumping, Dressage and Combined Training shows to come in September and October. Don’t let’s blot our copy book again by annoying our neighbours!

Dressage show – 25 september 2011 – now a qualifier

Please note that the last Dressage Show of the season is now a qualifier for the Cricklands Championships to be held from 7-9 October 2011.

out & about

Mottram Show 21 August 2011 ODRC members were out in force at Mottram Show. Gemma Woolley came 1st in the 14-15hh Show Hunter and came 3rd in the 14-15hh Working Hunter. Kim Salmon came 2nd in the 14-15hh Working Hunter. Steve Hopkinson came 3rd in the Novice Working Hunter (but sadly came to a grinding halt at the first fence in the Showjumping ring and was eliminated – were you getting complacent, Steve, after your success in the Workers?). Deb Connell came home with a 5th in the Working Hunter class and 6th in the Team jumping class. Katie Donald had a super day out with Trojan who came 1st in Welsh Section D In Hand class, 1st in Welsh Section D Ridden class and won the overall Mountain & Moorland Championship. (How do you improve on that, Katie?!? – and all that, despite poor Trojan being terrified of the huge Shire horses in their full show turnout complete with bells!!) BE80T Bold Heath 14 August 2011 by Vicky Hollingworth After recently joining British eventing my mum (Sue Hollingworth), Lesley Illingworth and I set off to Bold Heath to compete, Sue and I in the BE80T and Lesley in the BE90. As it was Sue’s and my second BE80T we were only after gaining some experience but were quite happy with our dressage tests as they seemed to run quite smoothly for Xander and Buffy. Still not knowing our dressage scores we went into the show jumping where we both had 4 faults knocking a pole late on in the course. We then both went clear in the cross country, however Sue had 3.2 time faults which when added to her dressage score and show jumping gave her a total of 54.2 placing her 21st. Buffy and I however didn’t get any time faults so when added to our dressage of 35.5 and our show jumping totalled 39.5 which placed us 2nd qualifying for the BE80T championships in September. [Ed: Well done, Vicky – flying the flag for ODRC on the National stage!] Lesley got on well in the BE90. She had a dressage score of 35 with one pole down in the showjumping. However Gucci had a mind of his own on the xc course at the last minute jumping a fence from the BE100 which cost Lesley time faults but she was pleased with Gucci otherwise. It was a fab day for the dogs as well and we were very thankful for our grooms Kyle Smith and Keith Chappell who helped every step of the way.

Show PreparatShow PreparatShow PreparatShow Preparationionionion Talk & Talk & Talk & Talk & DeDeDeDemonstrationmonstrationmonstrationmonstration - 24 August 24 August 24 August 24 August Our thanks go to Deb Henthorne for giving us a very informative talk and demo at Lesley Illingworth’s yard, and a big thank you to Lesley, both for allowing us the use of her facilities and for giving up her time – and dressing the part – to demonstrate the difference between doing a show for a hunter class and one for other showing classes. There’s no doubt about it that, if you want to be successful in the showing world, you need to know your stuff. Every detail of your dress and your tack and turnout could count against the unwary and unknowing! The horse’s conformation, behaviour and way of going might all contribute to a wasted trip to the showground. The six of us who attended the talk were mentally exhausted from trying to take it all in!

showjumping practices

Showjumping practices have come to an end for this season as the nights are now drawing in, and we send enormous thanks to Rachel Roebuck for providing ODRC members with the opportunity for extra practice during the season.

Clarification of competition rule for 4-year olds We recently received a query regarding the reasoning behind not allowing horses under the age of 4 to compete in ridden classes at our shows (rule 15 in the back of the Show Schedule). Under British Riding Clubs rules, horses under 4 years of age will not be covered by the BRC insurance policy for affiliated riding clubs for participating in RIDDEN classes. It is believed not to be in the interest of the health and well-being of such young horses to participate in ridden classes.

sponsored ride – please join in if you can by Vicky Smallwood

"Karen's Cause" is a group of family and friends all trying to raise money for Karen Holroyd to enable her to have "cyber knife treatment" which she desperately needs to fight cervical cancer. (They have a website: karenscause.co.uk). Karen has a 10 year old son, Eliot, and lives with her partner Anthony and Anthony's son, Jacob, who is also 10. There is to be a Family Fun Day on Sunday 11 September 2011 at Greenfield Conservative Club in aid of the cause, and I am organising a Sponsored Ride in fancy dress, starting and finishing at the Conservative Club, travelling through every Saddleworth village, taking approximately 3½ hours. The ride will be done at a steady pace so as to be suitable for all levels of rider. There will be refreshments for horse and rider upon return and a prize to the best fancy dress of the day. The entry fee will be £5 plus any sponsorship money you raise, or you can just come along for the ride and enter for £10 on the day. If you would like a sponsorship form, please contact me (Vicky) on 07837 646561 and I will get it posted out to you straightaway. I am currently negotiating with two local businesses regarding parking for horseboxes/trailers and again, if you need parking space please ring me on the above number. The aim of the day is for riders to come along and have fun and raise money for a very good cause.

What’s new for camp 2012 – applications now being taken

We’re doing our best this year to give everyone who’d like to go to Camp the very best chance of having a place. Here’s what’s different:

• The application form is attached to this Newsletter. We’re sending it out 5 months earlier this year to give everyone as much time as we possibly can to save up. You can pay in 8 monthly instalments to spread the cost over a longer period.

• We are hoping to take 35 riders this year so nobody will be disappointed

• It might be possible in 2012 to give a small number of riders the option not to have to do cross country, and to replace their cross country lesson either with another showjumping lesson or another flatwork lesson (but this will be dependent on taking 35 riders)

• From 2012 onwards Camp will be on the new Camp facility at Somerford Park which has the stables, pavilion, showjumping and dressage arenas, and the vehicle parking area all adjacent to the cross country course. It will save a lot of walking(!) and will make spectating of all disciplines and helping as ground crew much easier as all lessons will be taking place only yards from the pavilion. There will be more showers available than previously and a new laundry room should you need to wash or dry any clothing.

• We have access to part or all of the Farm Ride throughout Camp to use as a warm up before lessons or cool down after lessons.

So fill in your application form as soon as you possibly can and send it off to Sue Hollingworth at the address on the bottom of the form.

INSTRUCTION On Days 1, 2 and 3 there will be instruction for all participants in dressage, showjumping and cross country. If you have any particular fears or reservations about any discipline (eg you are terrified of cross country jumping), please let us know and we will try and accommodate your needs. Let us have details on a separate sheet of paper. [Please be aware that this is an event camp – of all 3 disciplines – but there may be the possibility that a small number of riders could have the option of not doing cross country, and having the XC session replaced either by an extra showjumping or flatwork lesson. However, this cannot be guaranteed.] Day 4 is riding round the Farm Ride as a stress free wind-down after three days of hard work!

Please indicate below your preferred standard of instruction for jumping (please tick):

[_] Absolute Beginner - fences up to 1’ 9”

[_] Novice - fences up to 2’ 6”

[_] Intermediate - fences up to 3’ 0”

CAMP RULES 1 Open to members of O&DRC only 2 Arrive at Somerford Park at 6.30 pm or later on Monday 4 June. Please remain with your vehicle on

the stable yard and do not unload your horse until requested to do so. 3 An evening meal will be provided at 8 pm on Monday evening. 4 All participants are asked to stay on site overnight in horseboxes, tents or caravans. 5 All horses to be fed at 7.30 am each morning and 6.15 pm each evening to minimise any distress to

the horses. You must arrange for someone else to feed your horse if you are unavailable at these times.

6 Participants are asked not to go on the Farm Ride on the Monday afternoon before camp begins. Both horses and riders are likely to be very tired by the end of camp, and this is made worse by hard work immediately prior to camp. However, in the new Camp facility, all or part of the Farm Ride is available for use as a warm up or cool down throughout Camp.

7 If you are having flatwork sessions as an individual (ie not as a pair) the sessions are only short. You are therefore asked to arrive at the arena at least 10 minutes before your lesson to ensure that your horse is warmed up ready to make the most of the short session.

8 If you are unable to attend a lesson for any reason, you must ensure that the instructor is notified before the lesson is due to begin.

9 Any behaviour considered to be rude or abusive to instructors will not be tolerated, and you will not be welcome at future camps.

10 The wearing of current approved standard riding hats for all ridden activities is compulsory. In addition the wearing of body protectors for all jumping activities is compulsory. Riders are advised to wear long sleeves when jumping.

11 When not riding, help would be appreciated either as ground crew for the showjumping arenas or picking up droppings on all arenas when in use. Somerford insist that droppings are picked up immediately (and they have CCTV cameras on the arenas to check up on us!)

12 Departure by 4pm on Friday. Stables must be left completely clear of shavings. Any clean shavings may be taken home (you must provide your own bags).

Additional Somerford Park Rules 13 Two bales of shavings will be provided for each horse stabled with Camp. Extra bales may be

purchased on site, or you may bring your own. No other form of bedding may be used. 14 You are asked to respect the facilities and ensure that you leave no litter, keep your stable area

swept and the Pavilion clean and tidy. Please keep noise levels down after 10 pm. 15 No horses must be taken onto the Camp Field (ie where horseboxes and trailers are parked) and

there must be no mucking out of horse transport onto the yard or field. Please use the muck trailer immediately adjacent to the stable block.

16 No smoking in or around the stables or camp pavilion. 17 No dogs are allowed with any camp (not even with visitors). Anyone arriving on site with a dog will

be asked to leave.

I enclose a deposit of £170 and agree to pay the balance of £165 by 1 May 2012. I enclose a deposit of £55 and agree to pay 7 monthly instalments of £40 payable on

1 Nov 2011, 1 Dec 2011, 1 Jan 2012, 1 Feb 2012, 1 Mar 2012, 1 Apr 2012 & 1 May 2012. I agree to renew my ODRC Membership in 2012 to ensure that my Camp place remains

valid (Camp is only open to ODRC Members) Cancellation: If you are unable to attend Camp for any reason, your payment can only be refunded if we are able to fill your place. If there is any likelihood of you withdrawing from Camp please let us know as soon as possible as we might have a waiting list for cancellations but this is by no means a certainty.

I agree to abide by the ”Camp Rules” above. Cheques payable to O&DRC. Signed: ……………………………………………….. Date: ………………………………………..
