Kia ora tātou,
Thank you to the 140 whānau who provided feedback to our Board through our community survey. The feedback is incredibly useful and informative and means we can develop a strategic plan that includes our whānau voice. This week our Board will spend several hours reviewing and drafting the strategic plan for our school for the next three years. It is clear from your feedback that we have a strong and committed community who wants to continue to work together to provide the best learning opportunities - he waka eke noa. We are all in this together!
This term has seen huge interest from our students in skateboarding, ‘scootering’ and roller blading. We have responded to this interest by providing specific areas of the school for this to happen, every day. Lucas, one of our Teacher Aides, is working with a number of students, designing and constructing ramps for the students and community to use. Thank you to our caretaker Rob and to some whānau who have also provided their skills and time to help build the ramps. Please let us know if you are keen to get involved as we see this as an awesome opportunity to utilise your skills and enthusiasm. We have also started work on a collaborative project with Dr
Wendy Hoddinott from GATHER LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE LTD. Our aim is to ensure that all of our outdoor play areas / landscape offers a range of opportunities for all of our students - including nature play. We have parents, staff and (we are soon to select some students), to work as a team to co-design and start to install areas in our school that provide specific ‘play’ areas for children. Our intention is that our students will be an instrumental part of this project. We recently had a Playsafe | Certified Play Area Safety and Compliance Inspection. Due to their findings, parts of our Big Adventure have had to be blocked off, until we can repair these to a suitable standard. We will keep you posted on this.
Last week three members of the Ministry of Education property team met with myself and Shevaun to discuss the next phase of property work for our school. Some of this work will be paid for by our Board, while other work will be funded by the Ministry of Education. We have another visit this Monday from the Ministry of Education Minor Works Team and once we have a clear plan of the work, we will share more specific information with you. Please know that we are extremely committed to equity throughout our school, as well as having a commitment to a fully functioning Hall and Swimming Pool! “Our Ōpāwa Market” Learning Celebration is
coming to Ōpāwa School! Throughout the term,
every student across the school has been busy
researching, making, building, planting, cooking
and creating products to sell at a market day event
here at Ōpāwa School. “Our Ōpāwa Market” will
be happening on Tuesday, 22nd September with
Wednesday, 23rd September as the
postponement date. We’re all very excited to show
you what we’ve been working on. Details about
how the market will work on the day are to be
confirmed after the COVID-19 Alert Level
announcement on 14th September so keep an eye
out for more information to come.
Last Thursday we had a cooking competition. We
competed with about 15 other schools. We had one
girls’ team and one boys’ team. The girl’s team made vegetarian chilli with rice, caramel popcorn, chocolate biscuits and a mouth-watering apple and cinnamon crepe. The boys made vegetarian bean nachos, guacamole with homemade chips, caramelised popcorn with an apple and cinnamon dessert. We had lots of fun.

Secondhand uniforms are sold at a local shop called ‘little one; which is located at 132 Opawa Road.

The uniform should be clean, tidy and named.
Only the long sleeved Ōpāwa School undergarment (gunmetal grey) should be visible under the Ōpāwa polo shirt.
Socks/tights - plain navy, black or white.
Shoes must be black, brown or predominantly white trainers, leather shoes or sandals.
School sun hats must be worn in Terms 1 and 4. Plain black or beige bucket/wide brimmed hat or cap.
No nail polish and/or makeup to be worn at school.
Coloured hair is not appropriate.
Hair accessories: plain black, nave or orange headbands, ties, ribbons, bows or clips. Ties, ribbons, bows or clips to be no longer than 8cm in diameter.
Drawing on skin and tattoo transfers are not acceptable.
One piece swimming togs are recommended.
No jewellery should be worn except watches and ear studs or sleepers. No other earrings. Any other jewellery, including rings and necklaces can be a safety hazard and are not to be worn at school. All jewellery must be removed for sport. Variations due to cultural or religious beliefs are allowed on written request from parents/caregivers.

Little One is relocating at the end of
September to Beckenham Central, so will
no longer be stocking Ōpāwa Second-hand

Based from St Martin’s Hansen Park, with a range of trail running distances from 10km to 50km, this exciting
community led event also hosts the Athletics New Zealand Trail Running Championships.
We’re thrilled to confirm the childrens race will continue in 2020. It is a short blast around the Park for all

Dental Care during the School Holidays The Community Dental Service will be providing dental care for children enrolled with our service during the upcoming school holidays. The clinics will offer treatment and relief of pain sessions by appointment only. To make an appointment please call/email our Contact Centre which operates between the hours of 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday throughout the holidays.
