TIMELINE 1969 The Humane Society for Larimer County was

formed by approximately 30 community members, armed with a passion for creating a better option for pets. On April 1, 1969, the organization achieved nonprofit status.

1971 Property was purchased for the organization’s first shelter at 6317 Kyle Avenue near Trilby Road in south Fort Collins.

1974 At the completion of a $100,000 capital campaign, and with financial assistance from three separate banks, doors opened at the Kyle Avenue shelter on May 1, 1974. The facility provided 57 dog runs and 65 small animal enclosures.

1980 Animal protection and control services became fully implemented under the Humane Society for unincorporated Larimer County.

1986 The City of Fort Collins contracted for animal protection and control services.

1987 $169,000 was raised to expand the shelter.

1989 Negotiations began for takeover of animal protection and control services in Loveland.

1991 Fire Hydrant 5 began, a dog-friendly walk/run fundraiser, adding pledge-raising and expo components in its 29-year run.

1998 The Top Cat & Tails Gala began, raising funds through a formal wine, dine, and art event.

2000 The organization’s name officially changed from The Humane Society of Larimer County to Larimer Humane Society.

2002 The shelters first staff veterinarian was hired, allowing for the care of sick and injured animals on-site, in addition to spay/neuter surgeries and vaccines.

2007 Property on County Road 30 in Loveland was purchased for the site of the future shelter, publicly unveiled to supporters at the 9th annual Top Cat & Tails Gala.

2012 Larimer Humane Society housed more than 700 animals displaced by the three-week-long High Park Fire, which claimed more than 87,000 acres and nearly 260 structures in Poudre Canyon.

2014 Northern Colorado voted “Yes on 200,” approving a one-penny per $10 sales tax initiative to help fund the new shelter.

2017 People and animals moved into the new, 39,000 square-foot facility in northeast Loveland, with the new facility’s official opening on September 5, 2017.

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE50 years later, Larimer Humane Society is embarking on a new way to serve the community: keeping pets with the families who love them. While pet ownership can become overwhelming in times of hardship, the organization believes that pets and their people are ‘Better Together.’

In conjunction with its 50th anniversary, Larimer Humane has launched the Better Together campaign, an effort supporting pet owners with the four challenge areas most commonly associated with pet relinquishment: medical, behavioral, food/supply, and disaster/crisis.

Realizing that for some owners there are no alternatives, the organization’s doors will remain open to any animal in need. For others, Better Together can alleviate the need to say “goodbye.” If you, too, believe that pets and their people are ‘Better Together,’ consider giving to the campaign today. Learn more at larimerhumane.org.

REFLECTING ON THE PASTBefore Larimer Humane Society, all that existed for homeless pets in northern Colorado was a gravel lot in west Fort Collins, enclosed by a chain-link fence, where law enforcement officers would leave animals in hopes that their owners would reclaim them.

In 1967, an ad ran in the Fort Collins Coloradoan, inviting community members to join forces in creating an organization that would better serve homeless pets. Then known as The Humane Society for Larimer County, the organization became northern Colorado’s primary resource for lost, homeless, and neglected animals.

LETTER FROM OUR CEO AND BOARD CHAIRFiscal year 2019 ( July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019) celebrated five decades of care for animals across Larimer County and beyond. Reflecting on the past 50 years through news clippings and conversations with supporters solidifies our gratitude for your involvement – whether that commitment is new to this organization or decades old. This report is dedicated to showcasing the multitude of ways in which your contributions have saved and forever changed lives.

As you’ll read within these pages, prior to Larimer Humane Society, no organization existed for the care of homeless pets in northern Colorado. The vision, passion, and fortitude of a small but mighty group of pioneers initiated this safe haven for animals in 1969, and has only continued to grow.

Though many things have changed over the past 50 years of Larimer Humane Society’s service to northern Colorado, one element has remained the same – our doors remain open, ready to compassionately care for any animal in need. In this golden anniversary year, your support contributed to several achievements on behalf of this effort.

Nearly 6,500 animals found a safe, warm, loving place to call “almost home” over the past year. More than 484 volunteers, supported the equivalent of 21 full-time staff positions – approximately 1/3 of our workforce – in an effort to efficiently sustain programming organization wide. Communities experiencing disaster or crisis, or those struggling with companion animal overpopulation relied upon Larimer Humane Society to provide animals with hope through transfer partnerships. All of this – and much more, was made possible because of you.

Since our founders gathered to create the organization, advancements on behalf of companion animals have been a steadfast vision. With your partnership we plan to sustain this vision living long into the future. As we look to the next chapter in Larimer Humane Society’s history, one of the ways that we – together – can respond to these needs is by helping to keep animals with the families who love them.

Our Better Together campaign (more information on the inside front cover), creates a safety net of services to alleviate circumstances that so often lead to the relinquishment of beloved pets. We invite you to join us in support of this programming to help alleviate the need for many pet owners to say “goodbye.”

As we celebrate this milestone together our message is of gratitude and partnership. We are deeply thankful for your dedicated involvement in bringing Larimer Humane Society to this anniversary year, and equally inspired that with you by our side, another 50 years of hope for animals is possible.

Sincerely,

1

Today, you will find volunteers representing 16 different programs – within and outside of the shelter walls. Whether walking dogs, fostering kittens, assisting with surgeries, planning galas, or processing licenses, volunteers are critical to this work.

FOSTER CARE

Your contribution to this work ensures that every animal is set up for their best chance at success – even those who need a bit more TLC. That’s where the Foster Care team comes in. Foster care, too, has been a 50-year mainstay of Larimer Humane Society’s programming, as even before the first shelter was built in 1974, foster care volunteers were opening their homes to animals in need. Whether caring for kittens in need of bottle-feeding, dogs too sick to stand, or an animal who simply needs more socialization, our Foster team and volunteers are standing ready to assist.

TRANSFER PROGRAM

Thanks to your generosity during our 50 years of service, and that of the entire northern Colorado community, adoption is the top choice when families are looking for a new pet. Additionally, because of responsible pet ownership, more animals are spayed and neutered, as well as licensed and microchipped. Not all communities are as fortunate on these fronts, however. You provide animals in areas with low adoption rates, high levels of overpopulation, and other challenges with a second chance through transfer to Larimer Humane Society, and secondarily assist struggling communities by alleviating the number of pets in their shelters.

LICENSING

Animals have become separated from their owners for far longer than the 50 years Larimer Humane Society has been in operation. In the 1980’s the organization and community came together to address the challenge through pet licensing. By licensing your cats, dogs, chicken and duck coops, and goats (depending on where you live in the community) you contribute to high-quality care and a return home for your pets – and others – should they become lost.
