Laminex New Zealand strongly believes in the importance of supporting sustainable building practices. For this reason, we’re putting ‘green’ first and employing a range of processes, as well as the latest technology, to ensure we reduce our carbon footprint and deliver environmentally preferable products wherever possible. From the manufacturing plants to installation, we’re working closely with our customers to foster a sustainable building industry.

ProductLEADERSHIP

Laminex New Zealand has established GREENfirst™ to encompass numerous programmes of environmental management. This strategy reflects our belief that action must follow good intentions and ambitious goals.

GREENfirst™ is Laminex New Zealand’s commitment to pursuing the highest standard of sustainable performance, consistent with maintaining its market position as a leader of quality products and customer service.

In line with our business philosophy, we have developed a variety of environmentally-preferable solutions that meet, and often exceed, typical industry recommendations.

DECLARED! Laminex New Zealand is the first company in Australasia to have a product (Strandfloor®) listed as ‘Red List Free’ in the Declare database; a platform of the Living Building Challenge, one of the building industry’s most rigorous and ambitious performance standards. Considered the ‘nutrition label’ for the industry, and

widely accepted as the most advanced green building standard in the world, the Declare label offers unprecedented transparency into the ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing of labelled products.

INDUSTRY COLLABORATIONBy working closely with leading sustainability experts such as the New Zealand Green Building Council, Laminex New Zealand is consistently looking for opportunities to continue to lead and support sustainable building practices in New Zealand.

RESPONDING TO CONSUMER DEMANDLaminex New Zealand is helping drive positive change by engaging the power of market dynamics, giving customers informed choices about the products available for building and renovating. People want to know their homes

are being built from locally made, ethically sourced and environmentally sound products. Laminex New Zealand provides consumers with confidence when it comes to sourcing greener products.

LOW EMISSION PRODUCTSLaminex New Zealand offers a safe choice when choosing wood products, with low formaldehyde testing and certificates with many colors and finishes to choose from. Both Formica® laminate and Melteca® panel products are quality products available on the low formaldehyde emitting composite timber substrates Lakepine® MDF and Superfine® Particleboard, suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.

Not only does this range of low emission products improve indoor air quality but the use of products can help accrue Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) points in the Green Star Materials Calculator.

Laminex New Zealand supports the belief that a company needs to be responsible for its actions – socially, ethically, and environmentally.

ManufacturingEXCELLENCE

Making sure we source our materials sustainably is a crucial first-step in the manufacturing process.

We’re committed to advancing on the path to sustainability through the management of raw materials, waste and energy; each of our facilities has a detailed annual sustainability plan in place to drive continuous improvement in reducing our environmental impact.

Through our GREEN™ programme we employ a range of strategies to support our sustainability goals, including the use of sustainable and recycled materials as raw material or fuels, the use of renewable energy—particularly biomass—and the introduction of new technologies to improve energy efficiency.

Innovative methods are used to manage waste from manufacturing processes including industrial vermiculture (worm-farming) for organic waste and irrigation for a local iwi dairy farm with waste water. We also use wood sander dust and other unusable wood waste as a source of bioenergy thereby diverting material from landfill, reducing vehicle movements, and reducing our demand for fossil fuel generated electricity.

RESPONSIBLE FOREST MANAGEMENT As a large manufacturer of wood products we respect and support responsible forest management and are committed to producing quality products that are backed by the very best certifications.

Laminex New Zealand has achieved Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for all three of our local manufacturing plants, along with the entire supply chain. This means that all certified wood products from these certified plants, as well as some other certified CoC manufacturers, can be traced, from processing to distribution, and are produced using ethically sourced wood fibres.

One of Laminex New Zealand’s core objectives is to improve the environmental sustainability of our manufacturing operations, metropolitan and regional distribution locations and corporate offices. We are dedicated to reducing waste to landfill and involving our employees in sustainability as a core organisational goal.

Laminex New ZealandCASE STUDIES

The Superfine® manufacturing plant based in Taupo has a novel way of dealing with industrial amounts of organic waste – an industrial sized worm farm. What would have previously ended up in landfill now provides lunch for over a million tiger worms. Managed by a team of passionate specialists and meeting its regional resource consent, the worm farm has been producing as much as 168,500 kgs of high quality vermicast annually. Vermicast (worm manure) is an excellent, nutrient rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner. This is a restorative take on waste management, not only is the waste diverted from the landfill but the end result nourishes our environment.

The laminating plant in Hamilton is reducing its carbon footprint by saving around 80% of its energy requirements to run its lighting. By replacing the existing fittings and cost effective lighting controls, energy consumption has reduced from around 660,000 kWh to around 140,000 kWh per annum. This initiative has not only reduced Laminex New Zealand’s operating costs by tens of thousands of dollars but importantly, has created significantly improved lighting levels and uniformity, and an improved working environment.

WORMS LIGHTS ACTION

Showing that Laminex New Zealand enjoys doing well – by doing good!

While Laminex New Zealand has several sustainability successes to its name, one that has come direct from the shop floor is the ‘Reclaim, Reuse and Recycle’ initiative adopted by the Sales, Distribution and Supply Chain Teams. Born from the desire to aid our customers in reducing waste to landfill, the Auckland Distribution Centre began a take-back scheme on the bearers, coversheets and pallets used to package and transport the orders of decorative surfaces and panel products. This take-back scheme is now available nationwide. In the first ten months of operation the scheme removed over 350,000 kgs of waste from landfill as well as cut down on the raw materials needed to replace these items which are now being re-used.
