First Reading — Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5). Gospel — Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37).

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven.

Dear Friends,

I want to share with you some infor-mation about our help to the church in Haiti. We had been helping a mission in the parish of St. Joseph in Cote-de-Fer, and the name of the mission was same as ours, namely Visitation. The primary goal in

helping them as a sister church was to construct their church in that mission area. That had been completed last year, namely 2017, and since it was not prudent to abruptly cut off our help, we notified the priest there that we had continue to help until the end of June of this year and then we would move to another mission.

Already last year I had consulted with our Finance commit-tee to see if we should continue to help the parish in Cote-de-Fer or move on to another area, and their opinion was that we should now move to a new project to help another church. Accordingly, one of the committee members did a little study and presented before the committee a proposal to help Our Lady of Alta Grâce in Savane Longue Ouana-minthe, in the North East part of Haiti. This proposal was acceptable to them and that is when we notified the St. Jo-seph’s parish, that our help to them would end by the end of June 2018.

So that you may have some knowledge of the Church we are helping, it was founded in January 2014, but never had a residential priest until recently when a priest, Fr. Enorce Brunot, was appointed as the administrator. The popula-tion in the place is close to 33,000 and 60% of them are Catholics. They have two chapels, 18 catechists and 2 pa-rochial schools, and the Church is used during the week as classrooms for the school. Only four families are able to pay for the education. All the others depend on help in some form or other. There are 10 youth groups, four in the main center and 3 each in the two chapels, and they are active in their parish involved in scouting, choir, prayer groups, running errands for those in need, visiting the sick and organizing spiritual activities.

The main source of income for the people is agriculture. The cultivation is mostly peanuts and yuca and depend heavily on the rain. If they don’t get the rains at the proper time, the crop fails. They are hardworking people, and live a life of faith, trusting in the benevolence of God. They contribute what they can to their church, but it is not always in the form of mon-ey, but items like fruits or portion of the crop. Their weekly collection will amount to $20 at the most.

This is a remote area with no road transportation. The only vehicle that is available for transportation is the priest’s car. So, if someone needs to get to a hospital, it is a challenge. I am including a few pictures of the place.

So, our help to Haiti will go from now to this mission, until we decide that we need to move on to some other place. I want to thank you for your continued support of the mission we help in Haiti.

God bless you all. Fr. George
