Here is the most recent example, found in an email sent to a Rotarian: “I noticed the other night at the Larkin Hoffman event, you were wearing a Rotary pin. I don’t know much about Rotary, but I was interested in learning more. Specifically, I have a 15 year old daughter who is very interested in traveling abroad and doing an exchange program of some sort. I was looking online at the Rotary North Star Youth Exchange. The summer STEP program looked interesting. I was curious if this only applies to Rotary members? Any info you may have would be great!” THAT is the power of the pin! Our newest Paul Harris Fellow

Welcome to new member Jill Moosbrugger

Stanimir Vuk-Pavlovic was honored with a Paul Harris Fellow

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION Submitted by 2016-17 Rotary International Foundation Chair Bill Wiktor

Rotary International designates November as Rotary International Foundation month and this year is a special celebration - 100 years of the RI Foundation! At the 1917 convention, outgoing Rotary President Arch Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” The first donation in 1917 was $26.50. In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.

Fast forward 100 years - the RI Foundation is grown with over $1B in cumulative contributions and a current net asset value of nearly $1B. Charity Navigator has rated the RI Foundation a four-star organization with a perfect score of 100 for overall, financial, accountability and transparency categories.

As we celebrate its 100 year anniversary, the goal is $300M in donations this anniversary year (July 2016-June 2017). Each club is committed to a goal (submitted by the club president each year) and we normally attain that goal from the proceeds from our club biennial auction.

Why is this Foundation topic of interest for all Rotarians, including our very own Rotary Club of Rochester? Simply stated - Foundation giving funds the charitable work of Rotary. Every dollar that we contribute to the RI Foundation is available for grants (global and district) after three years. The more we contribute the more monies are available for the grants we sponsor. As we contribute to the RI Foundation (either through the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants Program) we would be recognized as a Paul Harris Award recipient when we contribute $1000.

Another concept in Rotary is "Every Rotarian Every Year" (EREY). Again, simply stated - every Rotarian should contribute some amount every year to the Rotary Foundation. Although the goal may be $100 or $150 per member per year, the real intent is for Rotarians to make some financial contribution to the Foundation every year. To make that easier, you can visit the Rotary website and make a donation online via credit card. Yes, all of us has an account with Rotary International (that was done at the time you joined our Rotary club!). If you are uncomfortable with the online process, you can write a check to Rotary International Foundation and submit it to Elizabeth or myself and we will ensure it gets registered to your account.

What about our local Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation - how is that different than the RI Foundation? Great question, but one that I'll leave for another article or presentation!

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT STACEY VANDEN HEUVEL Each month Rotary has a focus. Leadership, Membership and Extension, Basic Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Vocational Service, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Water and Sanitation, Maternal and Child Health, Youth Service, Rotary Fellowship: We have so many opportunities to make a difference all in one club. While we have a focus each month, we actually work on all of these areas throughout the Rotary year. The focus area that I’ve missed in this long list, however, is the one that fuels all of the great work that Rotary does locally and globally: Foundation. Rotary International Foundation and The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation.

November is Foundation month, and besides our contributions of time and talent to Rotary and other community causes, we can reflect on our opportunities to support the important and critical

work that The Rotary Club of Rochester is doing right here in the Rochester area and in partnership with other clubs and our District for global impact.

Your gifts to The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation can support our club’s commitments to STRIVE, the new Ethics Workshop, Camp RYLA, Youth Exchange, the Literacy Summit, our club’s commitments for Fast for Hope, and upcoming water projects. The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization, and your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. If you supported our Around the World Benefit Auction in April, you are supporting our club’s efforts as well. Thank you! If you can make an additional gift this year to The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation, please do. It is money well gifted!

Your other important Rotary giving opportunity this year is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rotary International Foundation. The first gift to the Rotary International Foundation in 1917 was $26.50. Can you make room on your giving list for $26.50? Or how about $100 to celebrate 100 years of the Rotary Foundation? And a gift of $1,000 earns a Paul Harris Fellow for you or someone you wish to honor.

Rotary International is the premier humanitarian organization, recognized and respected worldwide for the good work it does and for the effective use of donations. When you make a gift to eradicate polio, promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. The Rotary International Foundation is rated by Charity Navigator as a 100 four-star rated organization based on financial health and accountability and transparency. Rotary is one of the most effective organizations in the world with how donated funds are used to advance the mission of serving humanity. During our anniversary year, let’s strive for 100% of our members supporting the Rotary International Foundation this year. Visit www.rotary.org to give today!

Each week I adjourn our meetings with a reminder that it is our privilege to serve humanity through Rotary. I hope you agree and will share a gift with The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation and the Rotary International Foundation as you make your year-end donations. It is one of the best charitable investments you can make.

Thank you for all you do for Rotary. We are One Rotary, One World.

ROTARY HOLIDAY LUNCHEON Mark your calendars for this year’s Holiday Luncheon, Thursday, December 15, at the Mayo Civic Center’s Exhibit Hall III. Annual Eggnog Reception will begin at 11 am with a plated lunch and program to follow. A formal invitation will be sent to all members, posted online, and included in the December Moccasin Flower.

RING BELLS FOR THE SALVATION ARMY Rotarians, along with family and friends are encouraged to show your holiday spirit, share your smile, and sign up to ring bells for Salvation Army. The club has commit-ted to providing 72 volunteers over 132 hours of service on Saturdays from November 12 to December 17. There are opportunities to ring both indoors and outside. Please sign up online at http://rochesterrotaryclubs.org/trcr/showDoc.cfm?pMenuTop=18&pObject=82 or at an upcoming Thursday meeting.

How can you ensure a successful shift? Follow these simple guidelines:

DRESS WARMLY. Also, please remember that kettle stands must stay in their proper position and cannot be moved.

Stores want an optimum experience for customers. Greet customers with a smile and the holiday greeting of your choice. Thank people for their donations. Bell ringers are best received in small numbers; 1 or 2 is ideal.

Salvation Army policies prohibit smoking, eating, alcohol and weapons at kettle sites.

HAVE FUN! Salvation Army bell ringers are an icon of the Christmas season, and pleasant and polite ringers spread the holiday spirit and ensure that businesses will welcome us back in upcoming years.

If your kettle fills up or you experience any problems while you are ringing, please call the kettle driver. The phone number will be at your kettle location.

Rotarian Jes with daughter Sofia.
