February Sunday 24 March 10am Tour of the Pop-Up Globe Theatre – $10pp – please see the rego form (across the carpark from the Ellerslie Racecourse) Pop-up Globe is more than just a remarkable feat of engineering and design. It’s the world’s first full-scale, temporary, working replica of the second Globe, based on over a decade of research by academics Tim Fitzpatrick and Russell Emerson of Sydney University. Pop-up Globe replicates the dimensions of this long-lost theatre exactly, for the first time since the second Globe was demolished in 1644. This is more than a theatre: it’s a living time-machine that opens up the mysteries of a long-lost world – and it’s the space for which Pop-up Globe makes extraordinary new productions of Shakespeare’s masterworks.

Charities Act review public consultation taking place March 2019 At the Charities Services annual meeting in Auckland today, the Community and Voluntary Sector Minister, Hon Peeni Henare, announced that public consultation for the Charities Act review will take place over March and April 2019. The Department of Internal Affairs is reviewing the Charities Act 2005, with support from a six person Core Reference Group of external experts.

“Reviewing the Charities Act is a great opportunity for robust, honest discussion about how we can strengthen the Act and ultimately, work better with charities and communities,” says Internal Affairs General Manager Policy, Raj Krishnan.

Public consultation was initially planned for the end of this year. “Recognising that the end of the year is a very busy time for charities, the dates have been revised to ensure there is enough time for good, quality engagement and a successful consultation process”, he says. Strong input from the sector, stakeholders and the general public is crucial to the review.

Community meetings and hui will be held throughout the country as part of the consultation process. Those wanting to give feedback can ask questions, learn more about the review process, and feel encouraged to make quality submissions in response to a public discussion document.

“I encourage everyone with an interest to get involved when the opportunity arises early next year.”

Further details about public consultation will be available on the Department of Internal Affairs’ website over the next few months. More information about the review, including details of the Core Reference Group, can be found online at https://www.dia.govt.nz/charitiesreview.

Boot Camp – it’s a wrap MTNZ provided our young community theatre participants from throughout New Zealand achieving these main objectives, as per our Strategic Plan key initiatives around communication, training and participation: 1. To grow the skill base of community theatre youth throughout New Zealand. 2. To expose them to and develop their skills (both life and theatre) with professional

practitioners who can guide, teach and inspire them. 3. To increase the opportunities for young members of our New Zealand communities to

participate in the arts through theatre. 4. To encourage cooperation between communities and community theatre companies 5. To encourage cooperation and work with and alongside, the professional arts and

theatre sector 6. To strengthen New Zealand’s theatre sector at a grass roots level, which in turn, will

then strengthen the professional sector 7. To give an opportunity for these young practitioners to network with each other and

develop friendships 8. To give the young practitioners a reality of what professional development and training

would be like if theatre or any of the arts and entertainment industry was a career choice they were contemplating.

The participants stayed and were catered for on site for the full duration of the training school which was held as a retreat at Epworth camp, just outside Cambridge. The attendees were all camp by 5pm on Friday afternoon. After the introductions, etc. and dinner, to encourage networking and ideas sharing, we held a Knowledge Café which is an interactive around the table group forum on ideas, topics, etc. Each session was 20 minutes and each group presented one idea to the rest of the group. Then the groups change tables.

Knowledge Café ideas this year included tips on how to organise a show to run smoothly during pack in, production week and show season, ideas for financial growth in societies- how can societies generate money outside of producing shows; what can you offer your society as the NextGen. Ideas on “how we can bridge the gap”. What does your society lack in? What excites you? Roles in a production and society that are not onstage – what are your interests and what and how you can contribute? How to get bums on seats/effective marketing techniques; dealing with conflict and personality or idea clashes – how do we manage this? After dinner, the group had a Q&A with our tutors and the MTNZ Executive, then a session on wellbeing and health and safety. Saturday they broke into four groups and this year they took different options for both the morning and afternoon workshops. Sunday morning the group had an audition work with the tutors and then performed a selection of solo song performances and dance. Whilst the weekend was only open to those aged 18 – 35, the upskilling and networking that these young people achieved and what will be taken back to their respective New Zealand communities, will benefit everyone and of course this can lead into working professionally in the arts and entertainment industry going forward – MTNZ sees this as a win/win situation for our whole industry. We would like to thank our amazing sponsors for all their support – we couldn’t have done it without them. Feedback from some of our attendees: I like the camp format - it is a great way to get to know people from the rest of the zone and the rest of the country in an informal setting Destiny's choreo workshop content was fabulous - really relevant and engaging MTNZ want to make high quality instruction available to the upcoming generation which is awesome David - Directing: extremely helpful and with a touch into lighting made me want to understand lighting a lot more There is alot of talented people in New Zealand and I want to work with them all. Preparation is key.

Main positive was how well-run the event was. Clear timetabling, plenty of information and contact.

Jennifer's workshop was great. And an interesting bonding experience with that particular group of people after we cried together! Getting the opportunity to see such amazing talent from people I wouldn’t have met if I didn’t attend the bootcamp. The final day performances gave me goosebumps and they truly inspired me Thank you so much to all the organisers, tutors and cooks that put this weekend together!! I absolutely loved it and already can’t wait until next years!! I used the director’s working with lighting right away when I got home

The main positives for me were: making heaps of new friends, learning a lot and being inspired to get out of my comfort zone.

The one major takeout from the weekend for me was learning about things that before the bootcamp I wanted to do but didn't know how. Now I am inspired to go out and try them.

This bootcamp was amazing! I loved it so much and I can't wait till next time.

I would love to see MTNZ run other schools in the future aimed at NextGenners. The areas I think should be covered as well as what we did at this camp are: more technical stuff like sound & lighting, stage management, costumes & props etc. and maybe something about marketing, financing etc. Never underestimate the next gen people in your society/committee. Provide opportunities for them and provide a mentor to help them learn

ME’N’GUS. By Paul Andersen-Gardiner Music by Jo Doolan. Arranged by Helen Duff A new New Zealand musical, now available. Mark and Gus return from the First World War to an uncertain future. Things start looking up when they each buy a farm on the slopes of Mount Egmont. Yep, this farming life is just the caper. The two girls down the road aren’t bad either. But things don’t always go as planned. Can Mark make a go of farming? Will the reluctant Violet fall for Gus’ charms? And how does shooting a milk stealing dog help ones love life anyway? Me’n’Gus is a musical comedy based on the 1920’s novel Gus Tomlins by Frank S. Anthony. Its world premiere in Opunake, Taranaki was followed by a sold out season. Me’n’Gus is a humorous look at a New Zealand way of life long since gone. The Saturday night dance, taking milk cans to the dairy factory, sale day when everyone dressed up and went to town, it’s sure to bring back memories for many and leave others wondering how we managed to live. There are two female and three male leads plus several smaller speaking roles for chorus. For a sneak preview, check out the following link. https://www.facebook.com/156925451031802/videos/1874121309312199/ More photos of the World Premier available on the “Me’nGus Rehearsal Group” page. Playhouse Theatre Inc. is incredibly proud to have recently staged their rendition of the much-loved musical classic "RENT". We were honoured to work with the New Zealand Aids Foundation and ENDING HIV as our naming sponsors to really highlight the story's theme and thoughts. With a star-studded creative team and even more impressive cast list, we were destined for a successful season - however, nothing prepared us for what was to come. This season of RENT was possibly one of the best shows we have ever staged - and our audience agreed! With raving reviews and some patrons attending more than twice to see the show in its glory - the cast did not disappoint, and neither did the creatives. With one of the lead males (our Roger) coming down with a throat infection, our director Kit Haines - had to stand in to play that part on one occasion. But boy, did it impress. A great show, staged by great people. Playhouse Theatre Inc. would love to thank all the sponsors that were apart of the show, from start to finish with a special thank you to the New Zealand Aids Foundation for believing in our vision from the beginning and supporting us all the way. Stay tuned for more news about our Musical next year and our recently announced kid's show for April 2019 - Bugsy Malone.

News from TALOS TALOS are having a busy time with one Show just finished and two more in rehearsal to fit in before the year ends. TALOS committee are working towards a name change and a smarten up of the outside of our theatre building. Also, we have just completed all the necessary jobs and now have Council compliance on our building. Once Upon a Mattress finished its two week season on September 8th. Bookings went very well and surprisingly so as this Show is not well known. People came (out of interest) from Auckland to see it, and we also had visitors from France, who changed their flight dates to make sure they could get to it. Many comments were heard about the amazing set and costumes not to mention the actors themselves. Princess Winnifred (lead role) did a wonderful job and told us she wasn’t really acting, she was just being herself. Her mother vouched for this too! In fact, the whole cast and crew did a wonderful job and were a dream team. We’d love to do it all again but onward and upward to the next two Shows. Junior TALOS are performing Annie from November 3 – 11th matinee. They pack down very quickly for the opening of Here’s to Our Heroes on the same day - November 11th evening - through to November 18th.

We decided to put on a play reading instead, so as to be able to provide some activity for NZ play month. The play readings were well-received by those who turned up, although it did get a little confusing when people were reading more than one character, and those characters were having conversations with each other! We are now well into rehearsals for our Music Hall

presentation as part of the Thames Steampunk Festival (www.steampunkthethames.org) which runs from 8-11 November. With all performances already sold out, we certainly do feel under pressure to make sure we provide a good show. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers of the Nextgen Bootcamp. We were lucky to be able to replace our initial attendee who had to pull out with another member who reported back very positively to the committee about his experiences. He learnt a lot, and although he is still a little reluctant to step and direct (but we are working on that!), he enjoyed himself and certainly has a better understanding of different aspects of theatre. So again, thanks.

MENOPAUSAL WOMEN STRIKE A CHORD AT OSPA Celebrating NZ Theatre Month, Onewhero Society of Performing Arts (OSPA) staged Devon Williamson's Menopause Made Me Do It during September. Interestingly, the number of men in the audience increased during the second week of the production - we're not sure whether that was due to good reviews influencing them or their wives/partners twisted their arms. Whichever it was, they thoroughly enjoyed the show as much as the women did. The setting was a somewhat dated motel room - think 70's decor - where five women, the self-styled 'Crazy Ladies', friends since school days, gathered for one of their 10-year anniversaries. Unbeknown to them, the motel's caretaker had lured them them there to help persuade one of their number - a commitment-shy tomboy - to marry him. Somewhat crazy, but great fun! The final night of the season coincided with Zony Awards night. It was so exciting to be able to announce to the audience at the end of the show that our 2017 production, Strange Resting Places, had won a number of awards, including Best Play."

STEPS Performing Arts is RUNNING WILD WITH THEIR PRODUCTION OF DREAMWORKS MADAGASCAR – A MUSICAL ADVENTURE JR.

Theatre Hawkes Bay's end of year musical Sweet Charity follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine, “a girl who wanted to be loved.” Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy dance hall in New York City in the 60's Featuring well known songs "Big Spender" and "Rythm of Life" The front of the auditorium will be set up more like the cabaret table settings of the day with the dancers coming out to involve the audience in the saucy numbers! The dinner and show nights are geared more towards the Christmas party function - a great night out! We are looking forward to rockin full houses for this one. Directed and colourfully choreographed by Alex RIchardson and Corinne Bowey The show opens for a three week season from November 22nd until December 8th. Tickets $35 show only and $60 with dinner If you are in Hawkes Bay at this time the show will be one not to miss.

Kauri Theatre Company Inc: And that’s a wrap. Bad Girls the Musical has taken Wellington by storm! We shocked, we triumphed, and we showed that we have the expertise to make a difference to the local theatre scene. Typical audience comments included: “amazing”, “professional”, “should be touring”, “ is this an amateur production?” We were also very lucky to welcome Stuart Hendricks Managing Director of MTI Australasia to our matinee performance. He is pictured here below with the BG Company.

A whole lot of hard work went into getting this first production to the stage and we are thrilled that it was such a roaring success. Directed by Lindsey Rusling who brought a clear vision and transported it on to the stage with Jono Weston who made his debut appearance as Musical Director, ensuring the strong vocal performances of the cast and leading a talented group of band members - these two people lead a dedicated team that resulted in the successful show that it was. And now it is time to build on this great start. We are not a one hit wonder. We are already looking at ideas and options for shows into 2019 and beyond.

Kauri Theatre Company: Innovative, promoting excellence, developing and supporting professionalism, providing leadership.

Upper Hutt Musical Theatre Well it’s been another busy period for us with our latest show "Into The Woods" now being in production. With a three-week season it’s been all go and we congratulate first time director Tia Pyne along with her cast and crew on a very successful opening two weeks. The show is full of very talented people and an incredible pianist particularly as Stephen Sondheim's music can be challenging at times. We have finally been able to replace our prop shed roof, so we are grateful to be able to move our precious things back into a dry place! As the end of year draws closer lots of work is being done on the shows for next year and we are excited to see potential new directors and shows we haven't performed before. Some of our committee attended the recent Next Gen Boot and the recent Zone 3 meeting. We have not been able to go to these in the past and thoroughly enjoyed meeting other theatre buffs and hearing all the wonderful things going on out there. We also learnt a huge amount which we will definitely be taking back and hopefully putting to good use to improve our society's future. We sadly say goodbye to two of our members Jacqui and Andrew Watson as they head north to Whakatane. Both Jacqui and Andrew have been heavily involved in theatre and they will leave big shoes to fill. That’s about all for now, enjoy the longer daylight hours and see you next time!

Zone Four North Canterbury Musicals are pleased to announce our creative team for our 2019 production - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Musical Teresa Dann as Director; Cheryllyn Callander as Musical Director Jo Allpress-Bartlett as Choreographer with Leanne O'Mahony as Production Manager.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the popular 1988 MGM film, takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Sophisticated, suave with a good dash of mischief, this hysterical comedy features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (The Full Monty) and was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards. Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress, Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end! Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,is premiering in the South Island with North Canterbury Musicals.

Zone Five

IMT have just ended a short, but full-on, season of Grease – The Arena Spectacular which was staged at ILT Stadium Southland.

This is the first time IMT has performed an arena show or staged a major show at the stadium so while there were a few challenges with a new venue and format we were delighted with the resulting high-energy and fun-filled production. The creative team of director Doug Kamo, choreographer Emma Holloway and Musical Director Michael Buick were a pleasure to work with and did truly create a spectacular version of Grease. It was also a pleasure to work with the stadium staff who went out of their way to accommodate all our needs and support us. Next show on the horizon is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jnr in March. We have so many talented and eager young performers gearing up for auditions it is going to be another fabulous junior show. Following that will be our 2019 major production, Wicked, in July so plenty to keep us busy enough in the deep south!

Hello possums – what has Musical Theatre Dunedin been up to this year? The year kicked off with the fabulousness that is Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a huge hit that had audiences coming back again and again. Fun, feathers, sequins, those outrageous one-liners and of course the songs. Fabulous to watch, total bonkers backstage, the massive costuming created drama of their own behind the scenes – but so worth it, stage this show if you can, your cast, crew and audiences will love it. After a wee lie down and a stiff gin, planning continued for all things green, we can’t wait to (be)witch Dunedin next May with Wicked, with the same creative team from

Priscilla – director Doug Kamo, musical director Stuart Walker and choreographer Emma Holloway. Auditions are being held the week after Labour Weekend and we are being inundated with auditionees, a great problem to have! If you haven’t visited Dunedin before or want to visit again, 16-25 May 2019 would be the time to do it, we’d love to host you. For some time, we’ve wanted to create a platform for our members to perform regularly outside of the big shows, so we have put together the Open Mic Cabaret Nights. Held once a month at our rehearsal rooms, they are hosted by two of our younger members – Regan Dodd and Josh Larkins, who host brilliantly with wit and flair. These nights are themed (think Disney, songs that make you happy, musicals written in the last 10 years – you get the idea, the themes are endless), with 10-15 performance spots pre-registered and another five or so on the night, for those that thought they were just going to be entertained but get so inspired by the performances they become the entertainers too! Finally we are finishing the year with a theatre restaurant, The Naughty & Nice Christmas Cabaret, featuring our well known performers and the songs they love or are known for. Supporting them are several up and coming talented younger performers, a great way to celebrate the end of another year of the magic that is musical theatre at Musical Theatre Dunedin.

Remarkable Theatre Company Our AWAY show received excellent feedback from

audiences with approximately 500 people seeing it

over the performance period. I have attached some

photos. It was great to be part of the OSTAS for the

first time this year with the show and something that

we want to do on a yearly basis with our yearly main

show. In September 2019, we are happy to announce

that we will be performing One Man 2 Guvnors by

Richard Bean.

For AWAY, there was extensive marketing and

publicity on social media and in local publications including adverts and articles/adverts in

the Mountain Scene, the Loop, the Lakes Weekly Bulletin, The Frankton Flyer, The Source

and on local radio.

We have three shows planned for 2019. Our first is the Garden Show – 10-Year Greatest

Hits – 25-27 January 2019 – Queenstown Gardens. Our 10-year anniversary of

Queenstown Garden shows. We will be picking some of the best sketches from the last 10

years and performing them in the Gardens. 7 shows in total over 3 days. Admission is by

donation only.

GET TO KNOW... FOOTLOOSE

"Kick off your Sunday shoes!" One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results!

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exert the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid.

The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar- and Tony-nominated Top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 17 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Getting to Know... FOOTLOOSE is the perfect show to introduce young people to the magic of live musical theatre! "Everybody cut FOOTLOOSE!"

NEW RELEASES – MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL AUSTRALASIA

October 2018

http://www.mtishows.com.au/chess-the-musical

At the height of the Cold War, two chess masters meet in Bangkok to battle for the world

championship, but their greatest contest is for the love of one woman.

Written in 1984 by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and Tim

Rice, Chess tells a story of love and political intrigue, set against the background of the

Cold War in the late 1970s/early 1980s, in which superpowers attempt to manipulate an

international chess championship for political ends.

Two of the world’s greatest chess masters, one American, one Russian, are in danger of

becoming the pawns of their governments as their battle for the world title gets under

way. Simultaneously their lives are thrown into further confusion by a Hungarian

refugee, a remarkable woman who becomes the centre of their emotional triangle.

This mirrors the heightened passions of the political struggles that threaten to destroy

lives and loves. Includes the international hit singles ‘I Know Him So Well’ and ‘One

Night In Bangkok’. Other well-known songs from the score include ‘Anthem’, 'Someone

Else's Story', ‘Heaven Help my Heart’ and ‘Pity The Child’.

1954 Broadway Version

Broadway's timeless classic musical whisks you away to a place where dreams are born

and no one ever grows up!

Based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and featuring an unforgettable score by Morris

"Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and Betty Comden and

Adolph Green, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family

favorites of all time. This high-flying Tony Award-winning musical has been performed

around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years.

Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling

children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across

the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers

come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bungling

pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook.

Featuring the iconic songs, "I'm Flying," "I've Gotta Crow," "I Won't Grow Up" and "Never

Never Land," and a rousing book full of magic, warmth and adventure, Peter Pan is the

perfect show for the child in all of us... who dreamed of soaring high and never growing

up. Peter Pan is a dream come true for theatres looking to spread their technical wings

and entertain countless families.

Green Day's powerhouse album is brought to life in this electric-rock musical of youthful

disillusion.

The two-time Tony Award-winning hit musical Green Day's American Idiot, based on the

Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, boldly takes the American musical

where it's never gone before. This high-octane show includes every song from Green

Day's album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st

Century Breakdown.

Johnny, Tunny and Will struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the three

disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their

paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back

home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny's attention becomes divided by a

seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy-fuelled rock opera,

American Idiot, features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day's

ground-breaking album to execute the story line.

American Idiot is a high concept show with strong social messages and endless

creative possibilities. It will surely add an enticing edge to any theatre's season.
