Greetings to all Lions, Lionesses and Leos

daughters, four granddaughters and two grandsons.

Janet was born in Alice Springs, where she lived with her parents and two sisters on family cattle stations. She started her schooling with School of the Air and later went to boarding school in Adelaide. Janet completed her teacher training in Adelaide and went to the Elder Conservatorium of Music at Adelaide University where she studied music.

Over the years Lion Janet has been into many different types of craft and this is her way of relaxing.

We both love spending time with the grandchildren, but as with most families, they have moved interstate so we do not see them as often as we would love.

Lion Janet has been a member of Quota International for 21 years and has held all club positions, including District Secretary-Treasurer.

In 2012 she was awarded Quota Volunteer of the Year and in 2014 was awarded the James D Richardson Award by Ross Valley Lions Club.

Jan and I work together for Lions and the community so that it may be a better place.

Brian Hewett District Governor 201Q2

My name is Brian Hewett and I live in Townsville. I was born in Brisbane, one of nine children and went to Victoria Point Redland Bay State School and Acacia Ridge State School.

I joined the Royal Navy and was lucky enough to be able to continue my education at the University of NSW, where I qualified as an engineer.

While in Alice Springs in 1975 I joined the Alice Springs Lions Club and while there met my wife Janet. After leaving Alice Springs we moved to Townsville, transferring to Mt Stuart Lions Club. I am currently a member of Ross Valley Lions Club.

During my time in Lions, I have served as president, zone chair, regional chair and other positions at club level. In 2014 I was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellow.

In 1994 I was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Thuringowa City Council and went on to serve in both Thuringowa and Townsville City Councils for 21 years as chair of infrastructure.

Other committees I have been on over the years are the PCYC, of which I have been a life member for 20 years and the DRSC for 26 years.

Janet and I owned B & J Motors Pty Ltd, selling the business eight years ago. We have three married

District Governor 2016—2017 Brian Hewett and Cabinet members at the Shadow Cabinet meeting in Townsville. Unfortunately some were unable to attend—plus the Northern Lion editor is missing (she’s behind the camera!)

Greetings to all Clubs in District 201Q2

INSTALLATIONS OF NEW EXECUTIVES

Congratulations to all Lions, Lionesses and Leos who have agreed to take an executive role in your club for the coming year. I hope many of you have managed to get to a training session in May/June and, if you were not able, that your club has the set of manuals for the year. Please contact incoming Cabinet Secretary Tom Newton if you need more copies – he can send you a Word File to print your own copies.

CENTENARY PROJECTS ... JUNE 7 2017 IS NOT FAR AWAY!

Those clubs who donated $1,000 to our nationwide Centennial project should now have local groups interested in applying for your $1,000. Don’t forget to promote it locally yourselves.

Has your Club got a Legacy project for your own community in mind? - something large or small that you can give to your community with a 100 Years logo attached – e.g. new road signs, a mural, park benches, a building? Challenge yourselves to do something special.

TELL YOUR STORY

One of our most important tools is this magazine. Northern Lion Editor Annette produces a fantastic monthly magazine which contains news, articles, updates, stories about what clubs are doing. Copies are emailed to each Club. Club Secretaries are then expected to email a copy to every member who has an email address and PRINT a copy for those who don’t. Many clubs also use extracts for their own printed club bulletin. Make sure your members see this magazine each month.

DG’S RUN AROUND

I’ve had a busy but satisfying June, with my final Cabinet Meeting in Townsville as District Governor and a great trip to the Western Clubs – Richmond and the lovely former church that they are using as a club base, newly re-formed Leichardt Mt Isa Lions and their enthusiasm and ideas for projects and growth, Julia Creek Lions and their refurbishing of the park, toilet block and driver-reviver area at the eastern

entrance to the town and Hughenden – the best improvisers I have ever seen when a much-wanted downpour disturbed the BBQ plans! They are assisting their hospital to set up an oncology treatment delivery clinic. Cloncurry was not forgotten and will hopefully be next year’s success story with a club rebuild.

DUES

The accounts for International Dues will appear on your MyLCI Site (under the Statements tab) early in July. The Australian dues will also be emailed to you in July. Please pay the International Dues IN JULY. Either direct deposit to our District account or send a cheque to incoming Cabinet Treasurer PDG Jim Nicholson. The Australian dues also need to be paid to Jim as soon as possible.

Remember - Lions International can cancel your club for late/non payment of dues.

HIGHS and LOWS

I’ve had an interesting year as District Governor and am now happy to hand over the management reins to Brian Hewitt and his team.

I’ve been fortunate to have a great Cabinet Team to keep our District humming along and appreciate the efforts of all concerned. Special mention should be made of the time and effort put in by Cabinet Secretary PDG Garth Gleeson (and Ronda), Cabinet Treasurer PDG Tom Becker (and Christine), Membership Team Leader PDG Gary Kenny (and Audrey) and Leadership Team Leader Toni Lanphier(and Aussie).

I’ve been amazed and astonished at the many happy, enthusiastic, imaginative and hard-working members of the Lions family out there who are a credit to this wonderful organisation.

I’ve been occasionally disappointed and saddened by the few who have forgotten why they joined Lions, have lost the ability to care for either their own members or their community, who drop members without valid reason and wonder why no-one wants to join their club.

THANK YOU to all of you for your service and friendship.

BEST WISHES TO ALL FOR A GREAT LIONS CENTENNIAL YEAR.

2015-2016 District Governor Kath Scully officially hands over the bell and gavel to incoming District Governor Brian Hewett at the DG Dinner in June.

Outgoing Cabinet Secretary’s Report

This is my last report for the Northern Lion.

It has taken nearly 12 months to accomplish the Club reporting and this is a good result.

All the Club PU-101’s have been received from the Lions, Lioness & Leo clubs for the next Lions year. The District 201Q2 Club information for the 2016-2017 Directory has been completed, my thanks to all the clubs for their prompt response to sending in these forms.

I have enjoyed working with DG Kath and her Cabinet this last twelve months. I must thank all the Club Secretaries for the great effort in getting Club reports in time, especially the last few months. Thank you once again.

To DGE Brian and his Cabinet, I wish you a very successful year ahead for our centenary.

To all existing/new Club Secretaries, please note your new Cabinet Secretary’s address is:

Tom Newton PO Box 4079 Kirwan Qld 4817 [email protected]

Thank you all. Garth Gleeson Outgoing 201Q2 Cabinet Secretary

Pictured in Brisbane are the finalists in Miss Popularity Quest, who together raised $257,277 for Lions Medical Research Foundation. Our Q2 entrant Ruth Corbin in green dress.

The overall winner was Tae Grainger from Q1, with Rachel Hohn from Q3 the highest fundraiser bringing in $72,000.

On the 17th of March this year Thuringowa Alice River Lions Club farewelled one of their serving members, Lion Edward (Allan) Powers. Allan was a very dedicated Lion, being a member of the Lion family for 15 years. He served on the board with three terms as President, and many projects were led by Allan. His expertise with machinery saw the projects completed much quicker, allowing time for the next project to begin.

Allan is sadly missed by his family, fellow Lions and many friends.

Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions promote

healthy lifestyle

Over the past weeks, Townsville Northern Suburbs Lions Club have been busy promoting healthy living at the Annandale Shopping Centre.

Pictured (above), Lion Aussie Lanphier manning the Diabetes Information stand and (below) the display for Men’s Health Week and Bowel Cancer Awareness month, in conjunction with the local pharmacy.

OVER 50 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

The Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club was chartered in 1962 which makes it one of the longest serving Lions clubs in the Townsville area.

Since its charter the club has had many Presidents who have gone onto greater things such as District Governors’ (Warren Hansen, Ron Regetz) and judges in our judicial system, Lions such as Philip Leong and Faust Giacobone were also club presidents but this story is not about them, rather it’s about one Lion who became a club president in 1970/71—Lion Ron Rebgetz and his family.

Gay, Ron’s daughter joined the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club in 2013 which made her a second generation Lion. Over the last twelve months Gay was the Club’s social director holding numerous social gatherings and putting the fun back into Lions.

Gay will be the first female in the club’s sixty year history to hold the position of CLUB PRESIDENT following in not only her father’s shoes as a club president of the Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club but also in her brother’s footsteps so to speak – although while her brother Gary was not a member or club president of Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club, Gary Rebgetz was the Charter President of the Thuringowa Club in 1986 when the club was charted.

So when people talk about the family of Lions, the Castle Hill Lions Club and the Rebgetz family are testimony to that. But the story still does not end here with Gay, as Gay’s son Ron is also a member of our Club joining in 2014 which makes him a third generation Lion so the Rebgetz and Lions family tradition goes on.

Gay will I’m sure lead the club onwards and upwards CONGRATULATIONS Gay.

201Q2 District Governor’s Bulletin Page 9 July 2016

The Gong and Gavel rings no more, our friend and mate, John “Sandy” Hughes passed away peacefully on Saturday 30 April 2016, at Mareeba Retirement Village, aged 91 years.

Sandy was not alone as he closed his eyes and fell asleep for the last time, and was comforted and farewelled by his family at his bedside. Most likely his Lions Lady Eveline (deceased) is by his side in heaven.

Lion John “Sandy” Hughes joined Lions Club of Ayr in March 1963 and was sponsored by Charter Member Lion John Torta from Home Hill. Sandy loved his Lions Club, he lived for Lions and enjoyed club meetings, working bees at various club projects and most of all the fellowship afterwards.

Lion Sandy achieved 50 years of perfect attendance, being one of the longest serving members on record of the club over the years. Sandy served in many positions within the club, too numerous to mention. He organised, together with wife Eveline, many fundraising events within the club and raise much needed funds for the community. For many years Lion Sandy assisted with printing and posting of the club and district bulletins.

Sandy was elected to serve as club president four times—1965-66, 1981-82, 2006-07, 2009-10.

John “Sandy” Hughes awards include:

Perfect attendance for 50 years Master key for sponsoring 25 new members Life membership of Ayr Lions Club and Lions Clubs

International Melvin Jones Fellowship Zone chairman award Served as guiding Lion for Brandon Lions Club which

was chartered in 1979.

Lion Sandy’s many awards are a testament to his life in Lions. He was presented with the Lions International

Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. This is the highest international award bestowed on a Lions member and was thoroughly deserved by Sandy as he contributed many hours of dedicated service to the club.

Lion Sandy was always amongst family—his Lions family!

Life membership is hard to come by, however Lion Sandy’s commitment to the

club saw him receive this in 1982. Lion Sandy lived by the motto “We Serve”. On behalf of the Lions Club of Ayr and District 201Q2, we thank you and salute you for your unconditional service to the club and community.

I was very happy to have visited Lion Sandy at the residence of the Ozcare Aged Care facility in Malanda and presented him with a Lions Comparative Booklet, celebrating 50 years of community service and the Lions Club of Ayr. I was happy again to have visited Lion Sandy at the Mareeba Settlement Retirement Village and presented him with his 50 years Lions chevron pin after the Cairns Convention in 2015.

Sandy was a good role model and a great ambassador of the Lions Club of Ayr. No greater gift can man give to his fellow man than the words written in the Lions code of ethics. Lion Sandy Hughes gave 50 years of his life to achieve all this and more.

If you should form a new club in heaven, Sandy, make it a fun social club. No selling raffle tickets or looking for work—you’ve done all that here on earth. It is now time for you to rest in peace.

With the passing of Lion John “Sandy” Hughes, we have lost a dedicated Lion, a true friend and our lives are enriched by having known and worked with him. Farewell old friend, may God bless you for all you have done. You will be sadly missed by us all. Rest in peace.

One more member gives us two more hands to do service in our community, at home and internationally. At Lions we make things happen.

As a member of Lions Australia you will experience a number of personal benefits including leadership skills, a sense of worth and purpose, business skills, networking opportunities and lifelong friendships.

What we do

Lions Australia has a proud history of achievement in Disaster and Emergency Relief, Medical Research and Community Service. We were at the coalface for Cyclones, bushfires and floods.

We were involved with the development of the bionic ear and cervical cancer vaccine Gardisil. We also inspired a young Fred Hollows and continue to provide funding for a range of other research initiatives involving diabetes and autism.

We assist with local community fundraising for special causes and help with development and building of local parks, community venues and sporting centres, Youth of the Year, Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, THE AUSTRALIAN LIONS DRUG AWARENESS FOUNDATION, Lions International ‘PEACE POSTER CONTEST’ and so the enormous WE SERVE theme continues to the needy, those in distress and the frail.

WE SERVE

Lions are people who want to give back to the community and help the needy worldwide.

We meet for a Dinner Meeting here at Carlyle Gardens Retirement Resort twice a month. There is absolutely no pressure to give time or funds. We only ask that you give what you can, when you can, if you can.

An Eye Opening Fact!

The inability to see clearly can prevent children from learning in school, adults from finding work or staying employed and other adults from living independently. Often a simple pair of eye glasses can bring the world into focus, but a lack of access to basic care prevents many people in developing nations from getting the treatment they need. Cost is also an issue; a pair of glasses may cost as much as a month’s wages.

Each year, world-wide Lions collect 30 million pairs of glasses. Annually clubs in Australia collect 500.000 pairs of glasses which are sent to six [6] recycling centres where experienced volunteers sort the glasses, clean them and determine their prescription strength. After careful packing the refurbished spectacles, Lions then store them until they can be distributed through humanitarian missions to developing countries.

Lions and professional eye care specialists screen many thousands of children and adults, providing them free of charge with prescription lenses, frames and intimately a better quality life.

Beneficiaries of this programme include countries in Africa, Middle East, India, East Asia and countries of the Pacific Rim.

Our club has supported this world wide project for many years and since commencing our Dinner Meetings at Carlyle Gardens Retirement Resort, the Lions Club and members are extremely grateful to the residents of the resort who have supported the club in this project.

We need glasses – please help us… [Leave at office or telephone Lions President John 4773 6757, Ron [164] 4773 2762 or Eldon [266] 4755 4510 for pickup].

The Follow Your Dream Foundation Australia was established as a charitable trust in July 2013 by Past International President Barry J Palmer AM to raise funds to support initiatives designed to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and children.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our MUMS – 4 – MUMS fundraiser commencing on July 1st and will run for a period of three months.

The foundation has already assisted children with new computers and to attend an educational camp and in Echuca announced a $10,000 grant to assist with the funding of the birthing mother’s project in PNG to provide safe and hygienic care for new mothers and their babies. Current appalling statistics are that five women die in childbirth every day in PNG and we can make a difference.

We are asking clubs to invite a woman in your community to participate in this project to raise funds for the foundation to allow us to provide grants for Lions programmes that benefit disadvantaged women and children.

THE FOLLOW YOUR DREAM FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA

MUMS-4-MUMS Clubs will look outside their clubs for

entrants which will help raise the profile of your club within the local community. Mums have their own fundraising teams and projects and your club can participate as much or as little in assisting your candidate with her

fundraising efforts.

Clubs can have more than one entrant.

Winners will be judged on total funds raised and deposited with the Foundation prior to each

final judgement with the winners at District, State and National levels receiving gifts and prizes.

Promotional materials will be available for participating clubs.

To register your participation complete an application form on our website www.tfydfa.com.au or contact me on [email protected].

Please help us make a difference to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Yours sincerely, PDG Carlene King OAM, Vice Chairman The Follow Your Dream Foundation Australia

Grace Walker, 18, of the Ashgrove / The Gap Omega Leo Club walked away with the Leo of the Year Award at the Multiple District Convention in Echuca. Grace, who is studying a dual arts / law degree, credits Leos with giving her a whole new outlook on what is important in life.

‘What is truly invaluable about the Leos program is that it provides young people with the opportunity to serve others, serve each other and serve ourselves,’ she said.

CENTENNIAL COMMUNITY LEGACY PROJECTS FAQ

Q1. What is a Centennial Community Legacy Project?

A1. Centennial Community Legacy Projects are designed to help clubs connect with their communities and create a visible and lasting Lions legacy. With three levels of participation, there’s an opportunity for every club to get involved.

Q2. What are the three levels of Community Legacy Projects?

A2. There are three levels of Legacy Projects, with increasing levels of size and impact. Clubs should choose the level that’s right for their club and community:

Level 1: Raise Your Community Visibility – a public item such as donating a park bench, bike rack or a new sign.

201Q2 District Governor’s Bulletin Page 15 July 2016

Level 2: Provide a Community Gift – a larger contribution such as refurbishing a park, establishing a community garden or providing medical equipment Level 3: Make a Community Impact – a significant community impact such as building a clinic, school, eye-hospital or library All Legacy Projects should be identified with a sign or plaque indicating the project was donated by a Lions club.

Q3. When can my club complete its Centennial Community Legacy Project?

A3. Anytime during the Centennial Celebration Program, from July 2014 through June 2018.

Q4. Do Legacy Projects qualify for the Centennial Service Challenge?

A4. Legacy Projects qualify if they also provide benefits under one of the four Centennial Service Challenge areas: hunger, youth, vision or the environment. For example, if you build a children’s park in your community, you could enter it as both a Legacy Project and as a Centennial Service Challenge activity.

Q5. How do I report my Centennial Community Legacy Project?

A5. You report Legacy Projects just like you report your Centennial Service Challenge activities – by using MyLCI’s Service Activity Report, under the Community and Culture activity type.

Please note: The Service Activity Report (SAR) restricts

activity dates to be within the current Lion year, so if your project was completed prior to July 1, 2015, enter it with the Activity Date of July 1, 2015.

Q6. Will there be special recognition for clubs that participate?

A6. Yes. Clubs that report their Legacy Projects through MyLCI’s Service Activity Report will receive a special banner patch based on the project level: Level 1 projects receive a Bronze Patch, Level 2 projects receive a Silver Patch, and Level 3 projects receive a Gold Patch. Clubs that complete multiple Legacy Projects can earn one banner patch for each project level completed, for a maximum of three patches. Select projects will also be featured on the LCI website, social media and LION Magazine.

Q7. Where can I find more information regarding Centennial Community Legacy Projects?

A7. You can find more information about Legacy Projects on the Lions100.org website.

Q8. Who can I contact if I have additional questions about Centennial Community Legacy

Projects? A8 You can email questions to: [email protected]. Or Q2 District Chairman Pat Lynch [email protected] or Phone 47771246 AH or Mobile 0427737675 always willing to assist.

Six senior Atherton Lions’ members clock up 237 years of service between them!

At the combined Changeover of Lions Club of Atherton and the Atherton Lioness Club, six of the Lions Club’s senior members were recognised with certificates and service tags for their dedication to Lions Clubs International—clocking up an amazing 237 years between them!

BRUCE MAGILL—27 YEARS Bruce joined the Lions Club of Atherton on 14 March

1989 and has held the club positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as the portfolios of membership, Christmas raffle, Lions mints and Lions cakes, the last of which he still chairs.

TERRY CLARK—36 YEARS As most Lions will know, years of service with Apex

Australia count towards Lions service. Terry was a charter member of Sarina Apex in 1968, transferring first to Mareeba ten years later and then in 1979 was a charter member of Apex in Atherton until 1983. Terry joined Lions Club of Atherton on 10 October 1995 and has held the club positions of president, treasurer and membership chair, as well as Lioness chair, plus Zone chair at District level. Terry has also brought several large projects to the club.

PETER BUNYAN—37 YEARS Peter joined Lions Club of Atherton on 22 May 1979

and has held the club position of president, as well as Lions cakes and mints, plus Zone chair at District level.

KEVIN RAMKE—40 YEARS Kevin joined Lions Club of Mareeba in June 1976,

before moving to Lions Club of Atherton. He has held the club positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as holding the portfolios of membership chair, Miss Popularity, Tail twister and Youth of the Year.

KEN TAIT—48 YEARS Ken joined Lions Club of Atherton on 22 October

1968 and has held the club positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as the portfolios of Youth of the Year, Lions mints, Project chair, Lion tamer and Tail Twister—a position he still holds today. Ken has also served at District level as Deputy District Governor.

DON SCHEFFLER—49 YEARS Like Terry Clark, Don began his community work in

Apex, joining the Burleigh Heads club in 1963, moving to Clermont in 1964 and Mount Isa in 1966. Don joined Lions Club of Atherton on 1 June 1970 and has held the club positions of president, secretary and treasurer, as well as the portfolios of Youth of the Year and Tail twister. Don has also served at District level as Cabinet Secretary.

All six of these members are still very active in the Club, attending every meeting and involving themselves wholeheartedly in the Club’s projects.

We salute them all for their dedication and service to their community.

Great to have a fantastic turn out for the Western Incoming Officer Training Day. Thank you for your hospitality, Hughenden and Richmond Lions.

How to Install a Rural Security System

1. Go to Bunnings and buy a pair of size 18 men’s work boots.

2. Place boots on your front verandah, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo magazine.

3. Put four giant dog dishes next to the boots.

4. Leave a note on your door that reads:

Max,

Me and Sam, Billy and Joe went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour. Don’t mess with the pit bulls, they got the postie this morning and messed him up bad. I don’t think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway I locked all four of them in the house. Better wait outside. Be right back.

Out of gas ... Sister Mary was truly a religious woman. Besides her

duties as a nun, she was also very active in various hospitals visiting sick patients and taking care of all their needs. So it was no surprise that one day when she ran out of gas, the only container she could find to put the gas into was a bedpan.

Sister Mary happily walked two blocks to the closest gas station filled up the bedpan with gas and headed back to her car. Luck would have it that as Sister Mary started tipping the gas into the fuel tank, the traffic light turned red and she had quite a large audience witnessing the spectacle.

Just when she finished pouring in the last drops of gas a fellow opened up his window and hollered, “I swear! If that car starts I’m becoming a religious man!”

Community Service Sixteen year old Lisa nervously brought her most

recent boyfriend home with her to meet her parents.

Although Lisa was very fond of him she was nervous about what sort of impression he’d make on her parents. After all, he was full of tattoos and rings all over his body.

“Mom,” said Lisa nervously, ” I would like you to meet Spike, my boyfriend. Spike this is my Mom.” After a few minutes of small talk and pleasantries, Lisa’s Mom called her over and whispered “Lisa, I don’t like him, he just doesn’t seem very nice!”

“Mom please!” retorted Lisa, “if he’s not a nice guy how can you explain the forty hours of community service he does a week!”
