kickoff with nick croshaw

Today sees the first visit of Spelthorne Sports FC to Redding Way and we welcome their players, officials and supporters, as well as the three match officials. Spelthorne were last seasons Surrey Elite Champions winning by 10 points with only 4 defeats in 30 league games. Since Bryan’s last home notes on the Horley FA Vase game which The Knappers lost 1-4, the results have not gone our way. On the 13th a trip to Sandhurst Town for a Southern Combination Cup tie saw a disappointing 2-5 defeat. The last two Saturdays have seen away trips to Worcester Park and Staines Lammas, both resulting ending in defeat 1-4 & 3-7 respectively. Spelthorne currently lie two points and two places above The Knappers, so today’s game is going to be vital to get the season back on track. Today’s visitors have started brightly in their very first season in The CCL, founded in 1922, two years earlier then Knaphill, but we gained entry to the CCL four years earlier. Spelthorne first game in the CCL saw a 1-2 home defeat to our local rivals Westfield, their second saw their first points with a 3-3 draw at Hartley Wintney and their first points. Since then a fine 4-0 win at Cobham, a 1-1 draw at home to Bedfont Sports, a 4-0 win over Farleigh Rovers and a 2-0 win against last seasons champions Worcester Park have proved their 11 points in the table. After today’s game they entertain fellow newcomers Guernsey FC. Talking of Guernsey, since making their debut with the infamous 5-0 win over The Knappers at Footes Lane back on August 6th, they have dropped just 2 points, a 2-2 draw at Hartley Wintney who equalised in the last minute and having played with 10 men for most of the match!! In between time they have brushed aside Warlingham (3-0), Eversley (2-1), Frimley Green (5-0), Cobham (4-0), Worcester Park (5-0), CB Hounslow Utd (4-0), Westfield (5-0) and last weeks 9-0 against Sheerwater. Where will it all end. We would like to thing we can take some pride back when we entertain Guernsey in December. With Guernsey and the CCL’s agreement we will be switching the game from Saturday 10th December to the previous Friday night, the 9th December kick off 7.30pm. We will hope that the change of date will result in a bumper crowd to cheer on The Knappers and see the phenomenon that is Guernsey FC. However, firstly we need to improve the performances on the pitch. Talking of improvements, I have been following the U18’s and have to report that after 3 defeats after playing some good football, the lads gained their first victory of the season with an amazing 3-2 victory over Sand-hurst Town at the Bottom Meadow on Monday night. With 94 minutes on the clock and 2-1 down Knaphill’s keeper Craig Taylor put a hopeful ball down to the half way line where Haluna Mesembe collected the ball burst past his marker nad drilled the ball low into the net for the equaliser. With the Ref ready to call full time, Sandhurst kicked off and Liam Welsh flew into a tackle which saw the ball loop into the air straight to Haluna’s feet and after steadying himself, struck a composed shot past the advancing keeper for the winner. This was after the match had been reported as a defeat to 1st team Manager Dave Freeman who telephoned in to find out the result and two frantic texts were sent to deliver the great news. The Knappers travel to local rivals Frimley Green next Saturday 8th October KO 3.00pm before returning home on the 11th for the Division One Challenge Cup tie against Warlingham KO 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there…. Enjoy today’s game….. Nick

After the disappointment of conceding in injury time to allow Westfield to grab a 3-3 draw we went into our home game against Worcester Park with confidence. We started well enough with decent possession. Lennie Harding found Perry Coles, who controlled and shot only to see the ball hit the side netting. The same two players were involved again shortly after with a similar result, this time from a Coles header.

Knaphill Reserves 0 – Staines Lammas Reserves 0 We knew Staines Lammas would be strong and a quote from Phil Ellery on their website backs this up saying. ‘The reserves could only manage a draw away to Knaphill yesterday, despite having 6 regular first team players playing, Manager Phil Ellery was very disappointed in the performance but saved praise for Joe Hall, Joe Hadley, Sam Woolard, Dean Robertson, Andy Sherwood and Tommy Owen, Ellery said " the youngsters at this club have very big futures in the game and a couple of them may well be included in the first team squad for Tuesday’ Sean Harvey dropped in behind Mark Harding at the centre of our defence and with Johnny Philips protecting them in a defensive midfield role plus Jimmy Edwick dominant in goal we were able to restrict Staines to relying on the quality of Billy Jones dead ball deliveries for their main threat. Nigel Hadley and Shaun Patrick continually pushed forward from full back positions and Hadley smashed a cross volley onto the bar with the Staines keeper beaten. We quickly followed this with a period when we had chances in and around the box but the ball hit the woodwork a couple more times and just would not go for us. The second half saw both defences mostly dominate, we again went close with Shane Cummins hitting a flying scissor kick volley against the post. Staines were always a threat and Edwick pulled a couple of quality saves to keep them at bay. Both sides fielded a lot of talented youngster which made for an exciting game and probably in the end a fair result.

A Coles corner then saw Shane Cummins rise about the keeper but hit the bar and the rebound fell kindly for the defenders. The visitors broke away and we conceded an unfortunately penalty allowing the Worcester Park to go 1-0 up after 25 minutes.

We continued to press when again we hit the self destruct button with a penalty for shirt pulling. The half time introduction of, Halona Mesembe and Johnny Philips, rested after 1st team duty in the week had an immediate impact with Mesembe braking through with 3 mins of the restart to make it 2-1. We dominated for 20 mins and the visitors had to reorganise to counter the changes in our line up but we failed to get a equaliser. Jimmy Edwick, new keeper signed in the week from Hanworth Villa, made some smart saves as we pushed forward looking for a second goal. There were positives to take from the game and our young side will take learning that gifting goals makes it very difficult to get a result we probably deserved.

Knaphill Ladies have started their second season in the London & South Eastern Regional Lades League and this season have been joined at Knaphill FC by a second team, nominally the Reserve side who play in the Surrey County U18’s Premier Division. These two teams will be carrying the hopes of Knaphill FC in continuing their good work in establishing a strong Ladies set-up. Managers Roy Lawrence and Adie Wilson both have strong hopes to achieve silverware this year, both in their respective leagues and the cup competitions they are entered for. Both teams are in the Ladies County Cup Adie’s Girls in the first round with a home tie against Abbey Rangers, whom they beat 9-0 in a recent league game; and Roy’s 1st team with a bye to the second round where the entertain local rivals Westfield with a score to settle as the same team knocked them out of the cup last year with a 5-0 win at Redding Way in the quarter-finals. Also high on Roy’s list is the Women’s FA Cup which starts with a trip to Bexhill Utd Ladies tomorrow (Sunday 2nd Oct) in the first qualifying round. Bexhill play in the South East Counties League and Roy has high hopes of progressing in this competition which the team are playing in for the first time. The season has had a difficult start with regular goalkeeper Jenna Morris carrying over a suspension from last year and caption, Leanne Sands injured. The season started with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Garston Ladies from Watford to put Knaphill at the head of the table. However the next game against Brentford Ladies was an eventful match – 3 keepers due to illness and injury during the game, one of the assistant referees asked to leave and a last minute, twice taken penalty which gave Brentford an undeserved 3-2 victory. Their third game ended in a disappointing 0-6 home defeat to MSA Ladies. The overall impression is that once the squad is back to full strength this team will be a match for any-one in their league and cup opponents alike, Knaphill Girls U18's recorded their first win of the season with a 5-4 win over one of the two AFC Wimbledon sides in their Premier Division, a week later saw a 9-0 thumping of Abbey Rangers Girls U18's at Redding Way with hat-tricks from Jess Gregory & Ellie Taverson. Then to cement their 100% record and top spot in the league a 16-0 thrashing of Epsom Eagles Ladies with goals from Olivier Buzaglio (4), Jess Gregory (3), Ellie Teverson (3), Amy Hamilton (2), Paige Drayson (2), & Vicky Maguire (2). As well as the league title, Adie’s team are firm favourites to repeat the feat of the League & Cup double in their first season as the club did two seasons ago. Once these girls get into the senior side, it is not difficult to see Knaphill Ladies progressing up through the leagues in pretty quick order and establishing the club as one of the best Ladies sides in the South of England.

Olivier Buzaglio scored four against Epsom Eagles last weekend. Proving her dad Tim, a former Woking FC favourite is not only one who can score goals for fun!

chatfrom thechair with chairman terry chapman

What’s the saying “it never rains but it pours” At present the football side of this club are having a bad time. We expect better and we will get better. This is NOT time to jump ship and make decisions you will regret. Life is not always greener on the other side. The First Team Management at this time will not be changed. Adie and Dave are going to get this bad run of fortune and bad luck turned round. Players now need to re-group and show what they are made of. We may have lost a few key players and may be struggling to attract the talent we require but as Chairman I will not give permission to the Management team to go out and get journeymen players who want money and do not care about the club. The game against Staines Lammas was embarrassing but we did have plenty of chances and a couple of new players that gave me some hope. It is time for the players to prove that they have the bottle and the knowhow to get this team back where it belongs. This can be done as a team not a team of individuals who too easily blame their so called team mates and their management. Management is all about setting the team up and motivating that team to produce. Once you are on that pitch changes can be made but heart and sole cannot. Players are a funny breed, when I was playing a telling off never registered and never improved my game. I knew when I was at fault and I didn’t need to be told. A word of encouragement from the manager or the captain was enough for me to make sure there was an improvement in my game. So players whatever type you are and whatever you respond to it is now time to stand up and be counted. Heat of the moment exchanges can happen so learn from them or dismiss them from your mind and get on with the job in hand. On a happier note a warm welcome to Spelthorne Sports. I hope they enjoy their first visit to the home of Knaphill Football Club. We will look after you off the pitch and hope your stay is remembered. Your club have done well to be accepted in the league and I am pleased you are showing up well in this very competitive division. Our Guernsey game has been changed to Friday 9th December. Kick Off 7.30pm. What a great opportunity to see the current league leaders and a good opportunity to avenge our first game of the season defeat. We are expecting a big crowd so turn up early and enjoy a proper footballing evening at Redding Way. If you fancy a trip to the coast on Sunday our Ladies team are playing in the Women’s F.A.Cup at Bexhill on Sea FC, Kick Off 13.45. What delight it would be for the club to be able to have a good run in this Cup. Please try to get down to Bexhill as it is going to be a good weather day. Bonus Ball was number 31. That is a very popular number; recently we have seen it drawn 3 times in the last few weeks. The lucky winner is Marissa she is the publican of the Armstrong Gun in Victoria Street Englefield Green. A pub well worth visiting if you are in the area. If you are a golfer this is where we run our golf society from and have done since 1984. Marissa is from Spain and runs the pub with her partner Pedro who is from Argentina. Pedro in his spare time caddies on the European Golf Tour. He is more famously known as a well respected friend of the late Sevriano Ballasteros for whom he caddied for many years. Last Man Standing is down to 2 people left who are fighting it out for the pot of £200.00. One just happens to be me against Mark Dawber. So who would you have picked this week remembering that once you have picked a team you cannot pick them again? We start Game 2 next week so why not join in it costs £10.00 only, that is not each week. The longer you stay in the competition the more value you get for your money. You could actually win. The more joining in the more you win.

Good luck to all our teams this weekend
