Boardrooms, higher education facil-ities and houses of worship areamong the intended applicationsfor Christie’s latest 3LCD projec-tors, the 12000 lumens LX1200and full HD 1080p LHD700.

The latest launches meanthat Christie has introduced nofewer than nine new LCD pro-jectors in a mere two years.

Using 4DColor technologythat incorporates a fourth (yel-low) LCD panel, the ChristieLX1200 delivers displays withhigh brightness and native XGA(1024x768) resolution.

The other new model, theLHD700, provides 4DColor tech-nology and 7000 ANSI lumens.

Frank Anzures, senior productmanager, business products, com-mented: “One of Christie’s advantagesis its wide selection of 3LCD models

in the 4000 lumens range and above.Customers needing mid- to high-brightness options know that they can

come to Christie and find what theyneed to meet their application andbudget requirements. And, with inno-vations like Christie’s 4DColor tech-nology, their displays can be createdwith vivid, dynamic colours that gobeyond standard 3LCD projectors.” Stand: 1H27, 1H40, 7S169

With electricity prices at recordhighs, these should be good daysto be in the energy managementbusiness. On the other hand, bud -gets are tight. Which of those factors will have more influence inthe coming year?

“It’s about return on investment,”said Mark Tallent, product managerat Crestron. “Companies know thatthey need to spend in order to save.”He noted how Crestron is making iteasier – with free trials, and the abil-ity to install systems incrementally –for companies to test the water.

For high net worth consumers, though, saving energy still isn’t a realissue, according to Andrew Wale, VPof marketing at Vantage. “For thosepeople, it’s about lifestyle,” he said.“But our system enables them to useenergy more intelligently, which

adds to its appeal.” After a couple ofchallenging years, Wale felt that2012 would definitely see an upturn.

“I don’t think consumers arereally feeling the energy pain yet,”said Aaron Cheatham, director ofproduct management at Control4,“but the breaking point could bevery near.” He noted that con-sumers in Europe are typicallymore energy conscious than theircounterparts in the USA.

AMX introduced the fourthgeneration of its Resource Manage-ment System last year and, accord-ing to product manager Doug Hall, the company has seen “tremen-dous interest”. “Customers arebecoming increasingly concernedabout managing energy consump-tion at the device level, and we canhelp them do that,” he said.

The best digital signage catches theeye – and few displays are moreeye-catching than those you cansee through. With this in mind,Hyundai IT is showcasing a 46intransparent display, which thecompany suggests will enableinteresting applications in the fieldof digital signage.

As it has a transparent displaylayer, the viewer is able to lookthrough the panel and see the envi-ronment behind it making it ,according to Hyundai, especiallysuitable for POS/POI installationssuch as shop windows and busshelters.

The  display has a resolution of1366x768 and a contrast ratio of1,000:1. Response time is 8ms andthe vertical and horizontal viewing

angle is 80°. The transmittance ofthe display is around 12-15%, byshowing a colour gamut of 5%. Itcomes with an embedded USBplayer, and touchscreen function isoptionally available.

Also on show is the D558FL55in video wall display which isdesigned for multiscreen installa-tions. With its integrated video wallfunctionality and its almost invisi-ble bezels (only 5.5mm – two dis-plays side-by-side) the D558FL iscapable of delivering large, virtu-ally seamless images. In addition, the D558FL features a full LEDbacklight, which delivers a  bright-ness of 700cd/sqm and a contrastratio of 3,000:1. Resolution is1920x1080.Stand: 10N120

The UTC and HIT series of touchcomputers and infotainment ter-minals includes what the companydescribes as the latest multi-touchtechnology, near field communica-tions (NFC), and integrated pay-ment systems. The HIT-W121,HIT-W151 and HIT-W181 infotain-ment terminals feature full-flat dis-plays ranging from 12in to 18in,with projective capacitive touch-screen (PCT) panels. They runWindows 7, Linux or Android.

The UTC-515 and UTC-521Ubiquitous Touch Computers arepowered by dual core Intel AtomD510 processors, and are designedto provide interactive user experi-ences while combining low powerconsumption with quiet, fanlessoperation. Ready as integrated pay-ment POS devices and with NFC-capable RFID inputs, they accepttransaction requests from Android,Symbian and other smart phones, seamlessly integrating with appli-cations like Google Wallet.

Advantech says the devices offerstylish solutions for displays in

public spaces and can be found inairports, restaurants, theme parks, hotels and other locations. PCT is afast-response, highly sensitive,multi-touch technology that allowsintuitive interactive use, with twofingers supporting zoom, flick, androtate functions.

The developer notes that oldertechnologies are limited to smallerdisplays – but the latest PCT tech-nologies allow users to interactwith displays from 15.6in upwards.RFID is built into all UTC and HITseries products, allowing NFC-enabled devices such as an iPhoneequipped with Google Wallet tocomplete transactions with a waveover a contact-less reader. digital signage

Digital signage (DS) isbeing used in manyways, from simple adver-tising to creative and

complex systems that are built ona network that can be connectedto the endless world of socialmedia. Many DS integrationsderive from the need to commu-nicate with the target group, thusused as a marketing tool to reacha broader audience, improvingthe brand identity/awareness andto push sales. This year the DSindustry has seen an enormousgrowth despite the economiccrush.

Part of the stimulus has comewith widespread penetration ofsmartphones. People are becom-ing familiar with mobile technol-ogy such as touch-screens and theuse of apps to encourage interac-tivity. The use of touch-screensand interactive media in a DSapplication is in turn more readilyunderstood and accepted.

Combine this technology withsocial media networks and youhave a potent concept. Face-

bookand Twitter attempt to moti-vate people to become activelyinvolved within their own per-sonal social networks – groupsthat are extremely attractive forB2C companies.

“Social media marketeers arepopping up from out of nowhereand big companies are using thesenetworks to get in touch withmore people all over the world,”observes Gabriëlle Offringa, mar-keting manager Europe, AOpenComputer.

For example, Coca-Cola usesfacial recognition kiosks withstraight uploads to Facebook atevents such as the Summer Loveevent in Israel.

JELL-O installed a big 3D bill-board in New York City, usingsocial media in a more commu-nicative way. This system usedTwitter for interactivity with thetarget audience.

McDonald’s used a very clevertool to gain more brand aware-ness. In London you can take apicture of yourself standing infront of a big digital display show-

ing a funny graphic. Peopleupload those pictures to Facebookand McDonald’s gains brandawareness.

Fashion retailers are also tryingto enhance the shopping experi-ence. Topman’s flagship store inMoscow uses augmented reality tocreate a virtual fitting room. It’s away of attracting more people tothe store and to have them buysomething without having to gothrough the hassle of the fittingroom.

British female fashion chainOasis is outfitting store changingrooms with iPads from which cus-tomers can make requests for dif-ferent sizes, colours or styles fromthe shop floor. If the clothes fit,the customer will be able to usethe iPads to pay for their purchasethere and then, bypassing the tillqueues.

Liz Evans, managing directorof Oasis, says: “The growth inmulti-channel – especially inter-net – retailing means customersare demanding more from physi-

cal stores: more excitement, out-standing service and a morepersonalised experience driven bynew technology.”

DS is trying to make the shop-ping experience more attractive.“Many shops already use simpledisplays to promote products andrun movies on,” says Offringa.“Now retailers are also usingsocial networks to connect withtheir audience via Facebook orTwitter: they can easily use this toget people to the store based onspecial offers or special services.

“People don’t see the big pic-ture yet and companies wouldlike to see ROI,” she adds.“Money plays a big role. There areendless possibilities within DSand connecting networks toenhance interactivity, measureconsumer behaviour and increasesales. It’s just that a lot of compa-nies first need to see the advan-tages before they start believingand investing.

“Seeing is believing. Another

barrier is that a lot of marketeersdon’t know what is possible interms of technology and thereforethey don’t know what to look forand how to use it correctly. I amconfident that DS and interactivemedia will only see growth in thecoming years.” It’s a trend thatmight be crucial for the leadersand innovators in DS today.

Gabriëlle Offringa leads theInfoComm-sponsored ISE Con-ference session: Digital SignageCombined with Interactive/SocialMedia on 2 February.

TeracueThe ENC-300-DVI-Portable fromTeracue is a compact encoderdesigned to suit a variety of digitalsignage streaming applications. Thecontent allows digital signage content to be sent live in HD over anIP network or the internet. TheH.264 SD/HD video encoderprocesses DVI with analogue audioand HDMI with embedded audiosignals. The ENC-300 allows thestreaming of video resolutions up tofull HD format, while special DVIformats (eg 1600x1200, 1920x1200)can also be processed. In the digitalsignage sector, the output of a digital signage PC player is cap-tured with the ENC-300 encoder. Advertising and infotainment content can then be transmitted tohundreds of television sets or to PCusers. By way of example, Teracuecites a deployment in a casino thatwould involve selected digital signage content being provided asadditional TV channels in the facility’s hotel rooms via the IPTVsystem. Playback of the HD signagecontent would be possible on standard IPTV set-top boxes.Stand: 1E80

Responding to the growingdemand for LCD displays for videowall applications and the increas-ing focus on lower power con-sumption, MMD – the exclusivemarketer and reseller for Philips-branded LCD monitors and publicsignage displays worldwide – isannouncing the 55in direct LEDBDL5585XL.

With mul l ions that a reclaimed to be virtually invisible, the BDL5585XL is designed forintegration into large video wallsof up to 150 units. It is also saidto consume significantly lesspower than traditional LCD dis-plays, thanks to the direct LEDbacklight that also delivers awider colour gamut as well asbrightness uniformity.

“Video walls have become amajor factor of many digital sig-nage projects and the new modelis a true head-turner,” said Wil-fred de Man, sales and marketingdirector of MMD’s public signagedisplay EMEA team. “It can beinstalled into a massive video wallof up to 15 units wide by 10 high.

So just imagine the jaw-droppingeffect on viewers – it is enough tostop them in their tracks.”

The new model is alsoequipped with a colour calibrationkit, so that users can ensure 100%colour consistency across each dis-play, enhancing the colour accuracyacross all units in the video wall

and giving pantone exactness for allcolours – a requirement whenshowing video content for corpora-

If you were to draw a diagramof a plant cell or a pair oflungs, what would it looklike? For decades, teachers

have taught children the structureof a plant cell and the humanbody using a two-dimensionalillustration – a plan view of anobject’s anatomy cut in half.

Over the past year a number ofschools around the world haveparticipated in a pilot schemeapplying DLP 3D projection tech-nology to the learning experience.

Tests at schools in the UKrevealed that a pupil’s retentionwas up to 70% better when theyhad had a part of their lessons

delivered in 3D – with some ofthe most enthusiastic responsescoming from teachers of childrenwith special needs reporting sur-prisingly high levels of concentra-tion during 3D presentations.

Although the number of 3D-ready consumer displays sold inthe UK is predicted to triple by theend of this year to 2.3m (Future-source) the international marketfor 3D is growing only slowly.

The economic climate is play-ing its part to dampen down dis-play sales, the consumer is beingexposed to too much ‘filler’material on channels because ofa dearth of original content,

while poorly converted or pro-duced stereo films are damagingthe perception of 3D’s value atthe box office.

Perhaps then in education andother sectors where the technologyis showing potential, 3D couldtake-off first. 3D is on the agendaof trade bodies InfoComm andCEDIA, as well as trade shows likeISE. The technology is now beingapplied in almost every avenue ofpro-AV, albeit at the margins.

Volume rendering softwarecombined with 3D monitors canbe used with Computed Tomog-raphy (CT), Magnetic ResonanceImaging (MRI), Positron Emission

Tomography (PET) and Ultra-sound (US) to enable physiciansto make quicker, more accuratediagnostic assessments. Surgeonscan plan a procedure and consulta patient using a stereo monitor.

In geology, photogrammetristsuse stereo pairs of aerial andsatellite imagery to create 3D digi-tal elevation models. 3D visuali-sation walls can be used to assesschanges in river levels, coastalerosion or tsunami predictions.

Exploration geophysicists useexplosive charges and seismicsensors to build a 3D dataset ofmaterial densities for subter-ranean mapping. This can poten-tially make oil and gasexploration more efficient.

Stereo viewing is increasinglyused in flight simulation becauseit makes the situation more realis-tic and helps the learner progressquicker. This is sometimes calledSerious Gaming.

Mechanical engineers andindustrial designers can use stereoimaging to help them and a clientget a more accurate understand-ing of depth and position. Archi-tects can visualise a building longbefore it is built.

3D budgets are dropping dra-matically while the introductionof integrated 3D camcorderswhich combine dual lenses in asingle lightweight body, will soonput professional 3D productioninto many more hands.

3D displays are essential to 3Dgrowth and the killer app couldbe signage, but most observersreckon 3D will remain niche untilthe glasses barrier is breached.Prototypes have been shown ofautostereoscopic OLED panelswhile there are a number ofglasses-free displays availablenow and aimed at the signageand video conferencing market.

Mobile devices work fineautostereoscopically because ofthe 1-1 viewing experience and itis hoped that their market pene-tration will drive 3D applications.3D could be combined with aug-mented reality techniques onmobiles as a means of wayfindingor brand promotion.

“We aren’t far away from thenext stage where children canhold and manipulate 3D imagesin their hands,” KatherynMacAulay, the deputy head at TheAbbey School, one of the DLP testsites told BBC news online. “Thiscould be combined with onlinelearning. It could be a phenome-nally successful educationalmodel that is truly visionary.”

Embedded knowledge

Adrian Penningtonsuggests that the biggestapplications for 3D are ineducation, medicine andengineering, rather thanentertainment

It is predicted that by year's end 2.3M 3D-ready consumer displays will be sold in theUK, but the 3D market's growth is still slow

The OPT-HDX11 series is the latestrange of fibre optic extenders fromABtUS Singapore. Similar to themanufacturer’s HDMI over Cat5extenders, the new products offer agreater distance of extension thanis generally available at present.

The latest series is able to

extend Full HD 1080p source over650m. Full HD 1080p signal can bedisplayed at the destination withno delays, while the physical prop-erties of the fibre optics also helpprevent any EMI/RFI disturbance, lightning and pressure extremesthat would severely affect copper

cables. The ABtUSfibre optic extenders alsocome with IR, keyboard, mouseand RS-232 control pass-through.

Sales director Delson Gohexplained the choice of plasticfibre over its glass equivalent.

“Plastic fibre is farmore flexible andcan bend morethan glass fibre; it isthus much easier toinstall. The installa-tion and connec-

tion are less stringentthan glass fibre. It is a more

suitable medium for lastminute staging over long distances, for example a stadium, where fastinstallation becomes a critical suc-cess factor.”Stand: 1P20

ISE 2012 is the launch venue forthe dSPEC226 DSP loudspeakerprocessor. Community says it’smore than just a DSP, however, and claims the dSPEC heralds anall-new approach to configuring, controlling and commissioningsound system installations, fromvery small to very large.

The dSPEC employs a high-speed SHARC DSP and a XilinxSpartan FPGA, which Communitysays offers a host of capabilitiesand a method of engineered work-

flow which is not available any-where else on the market.

All dSPEC models feature afour input, six output fixed-chainDSP architecture that includes 2x6native analogue I/Os. Variousexpansion cards are available toprovide two additional analogueinputs, two AES3 dual-channel dig-ital inputs, or eight CobraNetinputs and outputs.

Community says that dSPECeliminates the lengthy learningcurve that plagues many loud-

speaker processors. Users are ableto select from a library of Com-munity loudspeakers, and dSPECdoes the res t , automatical lyassigning factory recommendedlo-pass and hi-pass filters, correc-tive equalisation (including 1024-

Students are growing up in a digi-tal age and are seeking innovativeways to learn and collaborate withothers. That is the premise of anew Vaddio White Paper authoredby S Ann Earon, PhD, ‘Video inEducation Paradigm Shift’, whichexamines how the distribution ofcontent is changing the way infor-mation is accessed, and how tomake the best use of video tech-nologies to engage students atschool or wherever they may belocated.

The document suggests thatbuilding a consistent front-endwill allow schools, colleges anduniversities to teach from a consis-tent platform. The ‘back-end’, orengine, may change with furtherinnovation.

The objective is to understandthat a consistent high-tech class-room can remain and grow. Track-ing cameras for instructors, studentcameras and touch-to-talk micro-phones for remote students, videowhiteboards, HD document cam-eras, and fully integrated comput-ers will drive the content and makeit easier to communicate.

Earon also raises the questionof why change the front-end everytime a new ‘engine’ is developed.Add video-conferencing, stream-ing, video-on-demand, Skype andcloud computing, suggests thepaper, but do not change every-thing just because studentsdemand an addition to their com-munications inventory.

Distance learning, streaming, recording, and distribution via Weblinks are all readily available tech-nologies. The engines will changeand grow, but the consistency of thefront-end classroom will remain thesingle most important piece of thesolution, Earon contends.

Carefully selecting qualityfront-end products will alloworganisations to cost-effectivelyreap the benefits of video commu-nications for many years withoutthe need to constantly change allaspects of technology as theengines change.

The new 9000 series EncodingAppliance is being demonstratedon VBrick Systems’ stand. Accord-ing to the company, the 9000Series resets the bar for videoencoding performance worldwide, delivering the first high-density,high-definition streaming videoencoding appliance.

The company says that the9000 Series is a natural progressionand continued evidence of VBrick’sengineering prowess in bringing tomarket encoders that are designedwith purpose-built hardware andsoftware, as well as a realtime oper-ating system. VBrick claims that ithas more enterprise encodersdeployed than any other companyin the industry.

The company suggests thatorganisations are already seekingout the kind of high quality andhigh-channel density being offeredby the 9000 Series. For example, itsays that the success of mission-critical surveillance and telemedi-cine applications is driven byimage quality, requiring industryleading 1080p 60fps.

In other instances, includingtelevision distribution and digital

signage, hundreds of assets are dis-tributed from enterprise head-endswhere physical space and powerconsumption are precious andencoding per-square-inch becomesa deciding factor of a successfuldeployment.

The 9000 Series is the encodingelement of the VBrick EnterpriseVideo Architecture (VEVA), whichspans video capture, distribution,play-out and video content man-agement. Integration into the VEVAarchitecture is said to dramaticallysimplify deployment and use, delivering centralised managementand scheduling functions as well asintuitive browser-based manage-ment interfaces.

When used in conjunction withother VEVA solutions – specificallyVBrick’s VEMS Mystro contentmanagement solution and the Dis-tributed Media Engine – the 9000Series is claimed to be able todeliver video to any device, overany network. The new View MLAV9500 DigitalAV Encoder and View VL9300Digital AV Decoder useClearOne’s StreamNet technol-ogy for distributing, controllingand synchronising HD video andaudio content over fully IP-basednetworks. The developer says thatthis allows installers to design AVand signage networks with a virtu-ally unlimited number of digitalsources and displays.

Using an MLAV9500 encoderwith each digital source compo-nent, such as a Blu-ray player, satel-lite receiver, cable box or DVRmakes the source available any-where on the StreamNet network. The View VL9300 decoder allowsany digital display or AV compo-nent to access content on theStreamNet network, even if it usesa different signal format than thesource. For example, a Blu-rayplayer connected via HDMI to theML AV9500 could provide thevideo signal to a monitor that is

connected to the VL9300 via DVI.For hardware simplicity and to

avoid any compatibility issues withdifferent HDMI standards, boththe MLAV9500 and VL9300 usethe DVI connector for DVI, DVI-Dand HDMI devices. ClearOne alsoprovides a DVI-to-HDMI donglefor connecting the new View com-ponents to an HDMI source orplayback device.

The new components can berack- or wall-mounted, and theVL9300 decoder also attachesdirectly to any HDTV or monitorwith an industry-standard VESAmount. I would like toseemanufacturers on

board with globalisation. It ischallenging when you are tryingto serve global clients and youhave to quote regionally. As

globalisationpenetrates ourindustry moreand more, wewill need toadapt and thatgoes not onlyfor theintegrators butfor our suppliers as well.James Sprayberry, CTS vicepresident, operations, Verrex

I would make sure that iOS isavailable to all manufacturers, and used by all. It makes perfectsense to use a single platform so

that softwaresolutionvendors don’thave todevelop onmultipleplatforms. Asingle platformwould alsoenablecustomers to use the sameapplication independently of whomade their devices of choice.Unfortunately, this appears to be adream and not reality.Johannes G Rietschel, CEOand founder of Barix

I would like‘greensolutions’ to besomethingmore than justa marketingapproach. Forthat it wouldhelp to have away ofrealistically and easily measuringthe impact of our decisions on theenvironment. We always try to keepthe environment in mind but there’salways more that can be done!Regis Cazin, managing director, Active Audio

Clearly, I would ask for morerealisation at the end-user levelregarding what is possible and forwhat price.Dale Miller, vice president,EMEA, Christie

We’d love to see more companiesembrace standard systems, which will aid interoperability. We’re in afairly maturemarketplacenow, and itbehoveseveryone towork welltogether. Theindustry alsoneeds to puttraining and certification at the topof the collective agenda, to makesure we continue to meetcustomer expectations in thisstandards-based world. Kevin Morrison, managing director – Europe, AMX

Greater adherence to industrystandards for easier systemsintegration and interoperability.John Geaney, CES portfoliolead, unified communications,HP Technology Consulting

The major change we need tomake in our industry is to moveaway from the fragmentedsolution made up of manydifferent manufacturers’ products. Our business is all aboutproviding ease of integration ofproducts and solutions, providingthe user a solid working system, connecting every device, in anydiscipline (AV, IT, lighting, buildingcontrols). Often a client won’tknow how to achieve what theywant, as the proliferation canmake choices confusing. Robin van Meeuwen, VP of international sales and marketing, Crestron

We need to encourage dealers andinstallers to beproactive inselling againstclosedsolutions, andin favour offorward-thinking,futureproofsolutions.When you are dealing withintegration of multiple components, adaptability is key, and being ableto address the various protocolswill help ensure the life of thesystem. Xantech saw this trendearly on with the introduction of theiPad in 2010, which is why ourWIC1200 has a Web server built in,so it can host a control page thatany Web-enabled device like aniPad, iPhone, Android, or tablet canaccess and utilise for controlapplications.Graham Hallett, president, Xantech

The manufacturer is presentingVideo Center, its one-button HDstreaming, recording and auto-publishing device, all in a singleappliance.

LifeSize says a single Video Cen-ter appliance makes live and on-demand video easily accessiblefrom any location and on severaldevices, including the iPhone, iPadand iPod.

The manufacturer notes that, atthe push of a button, users cannow record and broadcast execu-tive updates, business presenta-tions, sales meetings, trainingsessions, data or diagrams to any-where in the world.

According to LifeSize, VideoCenter can provide an unrivallednumber of concurrent recordings,on-demand streams and simulta-neous live streams, all in 720p30

HD video; and says its integrationwith Active Directory simplifiesuser and group management.

The unit also features built-inreporting, which gives a closeinsight into user viewing patterns. It has support for NAS (NetworkAttached Storage), which providesextra storage capacity and centralis-ing video asset management; andfull API support for integrationwith third-party applications, including learning managementsystems

LifeSize makes the point thatVideo Center makes time zonesand international borders irrele-vant, in as much as as the user’saudience can log in to watch live,or they can stream or downloadthe content, whenever and wher-ever they want to.Stand: 12B94/12C92

University Hospital Aachen in Ger-many has been equipped with Ter-acue H264 SD/HD encoders, allowing students located in multi-ple theatres to participate in thesame lectures.

Point-to-multipoint broadcastsare made possible by a video dis-tribution system on an IP network, which enables a video data streamto be fed to any number of end-devices. As a result, lectures in theUniversity Hospital Aachen teach-ing department can be experiencedsimultaneously in up to six lecturetheatres.

To be able to display both SDand HD signals, the university usesENC-300-DVI and ENC-200encoders from Teracue. The ENC-

300-DVI for broadcasting H264and MPEG-4 streaming is specifi-cally suitable for video trainingand e-learning purposes, and sup-ports DVI and HDMI signals withup to 1920x1200 pixels.

The subsequent conversion ofH264 HD streams into RTMPFlash is accomplished using aWOWZA media server. Mean-while, live streaming of SD signalsis executed with a Teracue ENC-200 encoder.

The result is an installationthat offers the university hospitalconsiderable flexibility for thesimultaneous broadcasting lec-tures and makes room occupancymore flexible.Stand: 1E80

What does the ISE show meanto you? It means the start of an excitingnew year and our continuedexpansion in to Europe. ISE is thenumber one show for ROI wehave had for the past three years. This year represents anopportunity to show a full range ofvideo wall and digital signageproducts and to demonstrate theirkey features and benefits.

What do you think are the keydevelopments in, or threats to,your market sector at this time?I think flat panel and touchscreendevelopments and the increasingunderstanding of the potential inthe digital signage sector are veryexciting. My only concern is lowquality, difficult to install andservice products de-valuing thequality you can buy. We have

alreadyseen the consumer market ‘raceto zero’ in the quest for low, ultimately unsustainable, prices.

Why should delegates visityour stand at ISE?Peerless-AV won ‘Best ofInfocomm’ this year, which Ihope would give you a clue…However, Peerless-AV is not justanother US brand selling USproducts. We have madesignificant investments indedicated European ‘metric’products and also have someexciting new products to showsuch as our 3x3 Video WallTrolley. Stand: 11E64

The ubiquity of repeat-viewing services like thegroundbreaking BBCiPlayer and music

streaming providers such asSpotify has conclusively sealedthe deal on the cloud’s journeyinto the mainstream. Once atech-crowd buzzword, ‘the Cloud’now enjoys a global resonance, particularly with a generationthat expects to fulfil the majorityof its music and movie needs inthe online world.

The double-speed nature ofthis trend raises an obviousquestion: is residential installkeeping pace with the changes?Christiaan Beukes, owner ofSouth Africa’s Sphere Custom, echoes the sentiments of otherintegrators in highlighting thegrowing number of requests forincreasingly sophisticated cloud-based deployments, whilelamenting enduring bandwidthissues that render themproblematic.

By way of example, he cites arecent quotation for a project toinvolve streaming andsynchronisation at a client’s threehomes – each in different countries– with content to be in sync acrossall locations regardless of where itis up/downloaded. No mean feat –and even more challenging aprospect when you realise that thisentire area of technology is still inthe process of being defined.

“The main difficulty inintegrating such systems is that thedefining lines between what fallsunder IT, AV, personalcommunications, backuptechnologies and streaming [are]becoming increasingly blurred,”says Beukes. “As an integrator, Ithink the biggest challenge we faceis streaming multiple sources ofcontent into user-friendly systemsfor clients to use. Most of the time, each solution is different – there aresimply still too many variables.”

No one could deny the myriadof possibilities afforded by theCloud – from real-time streaming,to time-limited and unlimiteddownloading, to outrightpurchase. Moreover, plenty of CI sector-friendly companies arehelping to pave the way for easierimplementation by integrators –for instance, by integratingservices such as Spotify into theirproduct offerings.

For David Snipp – managingdirector of Stardraw.com and thepresenter of the ‘Cloud computingand AV’ session during Monday’sInfoComm Future Trends Summit– the only issue delaying “furtherroll-out is FUD (Fear, Uncertaintyand Doubt). [People] already usethe cloud each and every day. Youcan call it Twitter, Facebook oremails. They already expecteverything online. The issue is thatintegrators haven’t figured outhow to make any money from it.”

This surely goes to the heart ofthe problem; the trend isundeniable and unstoppable, buthow to monetise it? RenderingCloud-based offerings as a distinctstrand in the overall portfolio ofservices could be one approach.Ensuring that customers havesufficient – and sufficientlyaccessible – storage and backup forthis wealth of content might beanother.

Individual countries’ roadmapstowards the roll-out of superfastbroadband will play a significantrole in shaping the future of theCloud, but so too will the naturaltendencies of the market togravitate towards a handful of ‘core’services. That particular day ofjudgement is still some way off, butone suspects it can’t come soonenough for integrators looking tomake sense of this brave new world.

What are the keyopportunities foryour customers inthe current market

environment?Security and mass notificationsystems often require high-levelvoice paging systems that arebeyond the capabilities of typicalfire alarm or security systems.Sporting facilities, transportationterminals, shopping malls, schools and other public spacesare good examples of this kind ofopportunity. Communitycontinues to offer a wide varietyof high-level, weather-resistantloudspeakers for these systems. Many of these loudspeakers arenow safety-agency certified andmost are high-fidelity productsthat can be used for music as wellas voice. In today’s economy, newconstruction may be down butcustomers still need improvedaudio systems. Thus, the retrofitmarket is strong in most countrieswe serve and Community strivesto provide innovative productsthat can fill customers’ needs inexisting facilities. As an example,we offer many ‘configure-to-order’products in custom colours andwith a choice of features such ashorn pattern.

What are the major technologydrivers for the business goingforward? In loudspeakers, the mostimportant technology continues tobe the line array. Communityoffers its Entasys column line array,a high-performance, three-waydesign with line array performanceup to 16kHz in a slender, attractiveenclosure. Later on this year, wewill introduce some exciting newline array products. And, since linearrays work well in many, but notall, applications, Communitycontinues to offer a wide variety of

two-way and three-way boxedloudspeaker systems for clusters, exploded clusters and other point-source designs. In the future, many loudspeakersystems will includeamplification, DSP andnetworking for control and audiodistribution. The major driver foradoption of this technology is anindustry standard for digitalaudio distribution. Today, thereare several competing standards. For this reason, Community’snew dSPEC, a rack-mountloudspeaker management DSP,has the ability to use AES,Cobranet and future AVnetworking standards.

How does ISE shed light onthese developments? As ISE attendees visit our stand,we get a much better understanding of customer needs, market conditions and the impactof technology. In addition, ofcourse, it’s a great opportunity todisplay our products and to seecompetitive products from theother exhibitors.

Why should delegates visityour stand? Community is exhibitingimportant new products like ourDistributed Design Series of ceilingloudspeakers, surface loudspeakersand pendant loudspeakers. Wewill also display familiar productslike our ‘all-weather/all-purpose’R-Series and WET Seriesloudspeakers. But, Communityalso wants to be known as a goodbusiness partner for distributorsand integrators. Members of ourTAG Team (Technical ApplicationsGroup) will be there to offerapplications and design assistanceand our sales team will be there todiscuss sales opportunities withour partners.Stand: 7M176

Urbonas explained: “The main reasons

for choosing the TXn series were the fact thatthey are powerful but with the ability toadjust the required power; convenient con-trol and parameter tracking over a local areanetwork; the ability to measure line loadimpedances and to control the limits of

impedance. In addition, the informationthat they send back about the system makestracing any problems very straightforward. They were the ideal amplifiers for the MartinAudio system.” Stand: 1H6

IHSEAccording to German KVM/DVIswitch and extender manufacturerIHSE, it is the only company in theworld that can supply a solutionwith the specifications and per-formance of its Draco switch.

Described as cost-effective andreliable and setting new standardsin digital KVM and video switch-ing, the Draco tera matrix is saidto be especially suited for mediumand large AV post production stu-dios and TV studio installations aswell as control centres of all kinds.

Using extender units on theCPU and console side, IHSE saysthat the matrix provides the fastestinstant switching currently avail-able between video sources, including instant access to CPUswith no IP routing and no monitor

resync. The matrix serves as arouter and repeater, allowing CPUsor video sources to be located upto 120m from the user on eitherside using Cat5e cables or, for dis-tances up to several kilometres, using fibre connections.

IHSE says that the Draco tera’sunique ‘mix and match’ capabilitymeans that it can even route Cat5e-based input to fibre outputs andvice versa. This allows for data cen-tre installations based on cheaperCat5e cabling, while remote userswill be connected via fibre, result-ing in maximum cost efficiency.

According to the company, themodular architecture of the Dracotera matrix family allows for asmooth and flexible transition froma 48-port matrix up to the currentlylargest frame with a maximum of288 ports. The CPU board and I/O

boards can be used in any sizeframe. With its 288, 160, 80 or48 port frames, the Draco tera can

Enjoying strong salessince it was launched lastautumn, the Ray-On 100column loudspeaker isone of the highlights ofActive Audio’s presence atISE 2012.

The 1m high columncolumn speaker can bemounted vertically andtherefore, very close to thewall. Yielding a consistentsound with strong direc-tivity, the Ray-On 100 issuitable for applicationsincluding conferencerooms, small churches, shopping malls and airport facilities.

The speaker’s design is basedaround the Active Audio-patented

DGRC (Digital and Geo-metric Radiation Control)principle, which specifiesa combination of elec-tronic and geometric linearrays whereby the loud-speakers are grouped on astepped structure. Thewavefront is shaped andcontrolled by both thegeometric positioning ofthe loudspeakers, and aspecific filter for each step.

Designed for soundreinforcement of speechand music, the Ray-On100 offers easy set-up and

Two 55in high brightness and ultra-high brightness, narrow bezel pro-fessional LCDs have been launchedby DynaScan Technology.

The DS55LT4 has a brightnessrating of 2,500 cd/m², while theDS55LT6 boasts a maximum bright-ness of 5,000 cd/m². Both featuredirect LED local dimming back light,IPS technology, and have an 11.5mm bezel, suitable for video wallapplications even in direct sunlight.

Their direct local dimming fea-ture means that darker areas of animage receive less backlightingthan lighter areas, as opposed toCCFL and edge-lit LED backlightswhich illuminate an entire screenat all times causing blacks and darkareas to appear washed out. This

approach will give the screens con-trast as high as 1,000,000:1(dynamic), says DynaScan.

Built-in video daisy chainingmeans that a single 1080p source canbe used on video walls up to 6x6 insize without the need for an addi-tional external video wall controller.

To increase performance andprolong the lifespan of the display, the DS55LT4 uses a fanless thermalmanagement system. Heat gener-ated by the display is radiated awayfrom high temperature areas, whilea sensor continuously monitors theinternal temperature to protect thesystem from overheating. This isespecially beneficial in areas with alot of dust , the manufacturerpoints out. Stand: 11C80

Perhaps thebiggestchange sincethe inceptionof the show isthe transitionfrom analogue to digital. This hasbeen driven by consumers whowant to watch Blu-ray movies andstream HD content, as well as universities, corporations and government agencies who want toupgrade to HD videoconferencingand distribute 1080p contentthroughout their enterprise. Basically, today, everyone wantsdigital HD. An INDICATION of thisgrowth is the fact that DigitalMediais the most successful range wehave ever made. We have installedover 10,000 systems worldwide, which proves the need for a fullyintegrated solution that makes thepathway from analogue to digitalseamless.Robin van Meeuwen, VP of international sales and marketing, Crestron

Analogue wentdigital. Themany benefitsof digital signalprocessingtechnologieshave made theassociatedproductsbecome thestandard for any mobile or permanent sound reinforcementapplication at almost every sizeand budget level. Today analoguegear has become a rarely seenexception, utilised by enthusiasts.Although I don’t think that itchanged Adamson in particular, aswe were using DSPs for quite awhile already, this to me seems tobe the biggest change in pro audioin general over the last years. When LEDdisplays firstcame intoexistence thepanels were abulkyrectangularshape thatcould only beassembled in amodular format. However, therehave been many breakthroughs inLED technology since the first ISEin 2004. Now, LED displays arelightweight; can be assembledin irregular shapes; are multi-functional and can be used for

such things as wrapping a build-ing; they can be mounted onto theside of a bus for advertising…they can be rolled up and down;can be see-through and muchmore. The creativity they afford isunlimited. Not to mention the factthat the pixel pitch has becomesmaller and smaller to provideultra-high resolution screens.Jason Skillicorn, sales andmarketing director, Lighthouse Technologies

Technology is always evolving. We have introduced many new products and created a whole division of AV electronics over theyears to suit the market demand. It is hard to remember that we

were a spe-cialised com-pany for AVmounting solu-tions andstands in thepast. As weprogress, wesee higher bandwidth items being displayedsuch as from VGA to HDMI to DisplayPort. We also see moreeco-friendly equipment such aseco-speakers, eco-extenders andeco-distribution amplifiers. Delson Goh, sales director,ABtUS

Considering our area of technol-ogy is imaging, the biggestchange has been access to andthe quality of visual displays.Increased accessibility to morevisually appealing content athigher resolutions has inspiredpeople to visually collaborate. The manufacturer is presenting itsMaxBlox solderless terminationsystem and ProBlox-D all-in-oneconnector system.

BTX’s MaxBlox features apatented design that the manufac-ture claims is better, faster andstronger than anything else on themarket. MaxBlox, it asserts, reducesinstallation time and cost by elim-inating the need for soldering orcrimping; and its sled-type bottomallows these connectors to slide, snap, and lock into the patent-pending MaxBlox CD-MX915Hhood for a secure cable-mountconnection.

The MaxBlox family includesHD15, DB9, S-video, and 3.5mmconnectors, and now the new BTX-MXRCA screw-terminating RCApanel mount connector. The BTX-MXRCA requires only a strip tooland a screwdriver, and when used

alongside BTX’s other solderlessconnectors, labour time is said tobe reduced dramatically.

BTX says its ProBlox-D all-in-one connector system is the AVindustry’s first to incorporate mul-tiple data, HD video, audio andcontrol signals in a single connec-tor. The system contains two Cat5econnectors along with 16 HDvideo and 18 audio and controlcontacts. Stand: 2A55

The MicroWedge8 (MW8) andMicroWedge10 (MW10) – on showat ISE today – constitute a small-format continuation of the popularEAW MicroWedge Series of stagemonitors.

The MW8 and MW10 are suit-able for applications that demandthe high level of performance, audio quality, inherent feedbackstability, smooth coverage andergonomic design of the MW12and MW15, but without the needfor the MW12/MW15’s levels ofpower-handling and size.

The MW8 is the smallest in theMW line of products, with an 8inwoofer, while the MW10 featuresa 10in woofer. Both units’ coaxialdes igns pai r the respec t ive

woofers with a 3in (diaphragm)coaxially mounted HF compres-sion driver, providing 90° hori-zontal dispersion.

Built to withstand the rigoursof club and touring life, the MW8and MW10’s Baltic birch cabinetsare protected with EAW’s propri-etary RoadCoat finish, which ishighly res is tant to dings andscratches, while the rugged steelgrille is said to keep its distinctiveshape even when stood on by performers.

Until now, many schools have cho-sen not to specify a permanent AVcontrol system due to the high costsfor the hardware, programming andinstallation, says Danish controlsystems manufacturer Neets.

Unfortunately, says the com-pany, this often results in wastedtime and frustrated instructors asteaching staff must rely on sup-plied IR remote controls, but theseare often misplaced or fail to func-tion because of damage or deadbatteries.

Also, when the instructors usedifferent projector models installedin multiple classrooms, they mustremember different IR control but-ton layouts. In addition, projectorIR remotes cannot control external

functions such as PIR motion sens-ing or external amplifier mute.

Neets Control-BraVo is said toeliminate these frustrations with anintelligent and affordable alterna-t ive. Neets says that with i tsstraightforward design, fast instal-lation and simple configuration,Neets Control-BraVo offers a com-plete solution with an unprece-dented price/performance ratio.

An internal clock is program-mable for auto off after a selectedtime interval – or the clock canwork with an external PIR sensorto power off the system when nomotion is detected for a specifiedtime. Stand: 3D128

The manufacturer is showing itsnew Arcs II constant curvature linesource loudspeaker, which isintended for medium to largerental productions.

L-Acoustics claims Arcs II deliv-ers increased power, bandwidthand coherence, along with flexibleand predictable coverage, and thatit offers the audience an incompa-rable listening experience featuringprecision, clarity and impact.

The biamplified enclosure isbased on a two-way active design, and is the second generation of theoriginal Arcs speaker. The companyclaims Arcs II offers a string of newimproved features over its prede-cessor, including L-Acoustics’ K1grade transducers for increased SPL(140dB), lower weight (50kg), anda new front grille which it saysenhances the product’s durabilityas well as its appearance.

It can be deployed horizontallyor vertically, with a coverage angleproportional to the number ofenclosures in the array (N x 22.5°);and also provides an asymmetricalcoverage angle of 60°.

L-Acoustics says Arcs II is suitedto tightly packed FOH systems formedium-throw applications as itboasts a high SPL, low frequencyimpact and excellent stereo imag-ing. Other applications include adistributed system, a centre clusterfor theatrical work, sidefill moni-toring, stereo front fill, offstage fill, and delay systems for concert audi-ences in stadia and arenas.

L-Acoustics recommends usingits La-Rak touring rack and LA8amplified controller preset libraryas a drive system for the Arcs II,which is now shipping. Stand: 7K200
