New batch joins

Second chances at the AFL’s youngest club have helped two WA football products

join one of the State’s most respected sporting groups.

Matt de Boer and Tendai Mzungu, teammates at Fremantle, joined 15 other players and an umpire in being inducted into the WA football 200 Club. Its members have reached that number of league games.

A total of 33 games with Greater Western Sydney’s AFL and NEAFL teams pushed de Boer

over the line while Mzungu, who played six games at the top level and six in the State league with the Suns needed the final year of playing service to pass the mark. To qualify for the WA 200 Club players must have started their league careers in WA or played at least 25 WAFL matches.

If you ask older readers of the Football Budget about the best period in WA Football, many of them would tell you about the 1960s. It was an era when WA was able to win a national carnival (1961) and then play fantastic footy against the Vics in Perth, winning one game in 1965 and losing a handful of others by small margins. It was also a golden time for WAFL collectables. The ever-popular Mobil card series were produced in 1964 and 1965, while the Daily News issued badges and cloth patches throughout the 1960s. There were also some great plastic tokens made by Twisties and Milo later in the decade. Some of the most difficult items to find, however, are the souvenir mini posters that were published within the pages of the Weekend News magazine each week during footy season from 1966-1969. Those who revere the footballers of the 1960s would immediately recognise most of the players from the training photographs that appeared on these posters. That’s if you can find any of them. They were generally roughly torn out of the magazine and posted on youngsters’ walls. Needless to say, many of them ended up in the bin and those that do turn up today are often in poor condition. Despite the poor condition, they still look great. Some years ago, I was shown a big collection of these by a local collector. A Melbourne-based collector also has most of those produced, while I was lucky enough to pick up a nice lot of them myself some time ago. Other than that, I’ve seen very few. In fact, WAFL collectors are still trying to work out how many there were. Thus far, 103

different posters have been identified across the three collections mentioned above. I doubt there would be more than one or two that we haven’t yet seen. But if anyone’s got any of these, I would love to hear from you. It would be great to get the list nailed down so that we all know what we’re looking for.As you might expect, collecting WAFL memorabilia for 33 years has allowed me to build up quite a collection. But there are still plenty of holes to be filled. And I’m keener on finding some items than I am on finding others. Right near the top of my list is the set of souvenir footballs that were made by Burley and kicked into the crowd by the competing teams before grand finals in the 1960s and 1970s.

The balls came in the colours of both teams, meaning there were two different balls issued each year. But I’ve never really been able to work out when this started and when it finished. I have just two of these balls in my collection – one for Perth from 1968 and one for South Fremantle from 1975. I’ve also seen balls for West Perth from 1969 and 1971, Perth and South Fremantle from 1970, East Perth from 1972 and Subiaco from 1973. But all of these fall in the period between 1968 and 1975, which means there are at least 14 footballs to collect. Does anyone know whether these were handed out before 1968 or after 1975?

During 2018, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

East Perth East FremantleStory so far: Over the past five matches the Royals have gone LWLWL to again drop out of the top five. The 25-point defeat at the hands of Peel last round was concerning considering the Thunder are one of the other challenges for the finals berth.Running hot: Brendon Ah Chee continues to remind the Eagles match committee of his abilities. He even complemented his 21 possessions midfield with seven hit-outs in a new-look East Perth ruck battery in the loss to Peel.Who is to come: West Perth (H), Peel (A).

Story so far: Season can’t end quick enough for East Fremantle. The Sharks have lost seven matches in a row and it is tough to see them winning one before the 2018 campaign comes to an end. East Fremantle is 2-13 and sit ninth.Running hot: In spite of East Fremantle’s predicament Cam Eardley has continued to produce strong midfield performances. He has averaged 26 possessions in his past five matches. He applied eight tackles in the Round 17 clash with Swan Districts.Who is to come: Subiaco (H), South Fremantle (H).

Last time they met: R6, 2018 – East Fremantle 6.12 (48) lost to East Perth 10.21 (81).Asher Samelko had 20 possessions, 14 hit-outs, nine inside 50m entries and five free kicks to steer an inaccurate East Perth to victory. Hard-working utility James Bristow was among the best for the Sharks. The key: Which East Perth team will turn up this week? The WAFL has seen the Royals in a lot of guises in recent weeks. Some have been impressive and a few downright ordinary. If the right one doesn’t show in this round the Royals’ season might be over.

Saturday, Aug 11, 2.15pm

West Perth SubiacoStory so far: The Falcons threw everything at South Fremantle last week only to fall agonisingly short. The result ended a three-game winning streak but Bill Monaghan’s unit still holds on to second spot on the premiership ladder.Running hot: Andrew Strijk has become the WAFL’s most dangerous small forward. The veteran has kicked 33 goals in his past eight matches. If he hadn’t shown some class last round the margin against South would have been greater. Who is to come: East Perth (A), Bye.

Story so far: Will any team defeat Subiaco this year? The Lions have won all 15 matches in the home- and-away season. The big interest is now the internal competition for spots in a league line-up that will be just as hot in the finals. Running hot: Jarrad Schofield has been able to get the best out of players who came to Subiaco from other clubs. Drew Rohde’s recent form has been further proof. The former Falcon has been particularly handy in defence.Who is to come: East Fremantle (A), Perth (H).

Last time they met: R13, 2018 – West Perth 10.6 (66) lost to Subiaco 15.9 (99).As if to tease the league Subiaco produced yet another duo of scoring dynamos with Ryan Borchet and Lachlan Delahunty each kicking five goals. Blake Wilhelm was among the best for the Falcons. The key: Losses of 22 points and 33 points are not normally encouraging leading up to a WAFL rematch. But Subiaco’s form has been so great in 2018 that West Perth’s defeat are viewed as the most consistent challenges to the Lions. Can they end the streak this time?

Saturday, Aug 11, 2.15pm

Swan Districts South FremantleStory so far: For the second time in three matches, Swan Districts managed just 4.4 (28) against an opponent. No surprises that total doesn’t win too many matches. Swans are eighth but still only one win and a bit of percentage outside the top five.Running hot: He’s been a loyal servant in defence and the black and whites get the chance to honour Kirk Ugle in his 100th appearance in club colours. Ugle will also play a key role if Swans are to challenge the Bulldogs.Who is to come: Bye, Claremont (H)

Story so far: After two losses South Fremantle needed to show some grunt against West Perth. The Bulldogs held on to defeat the Falcons by five points to stay in the race for second spot and the right to host the Qualifying Final. Running hot: Shane Hockey had 41 possessions and applied 19 tackles in the triumph over West Perth. South Fremantle needed a no-nonsense approach at a delicate stage of the season and Hockey provided it.Who is to come: Perth (H), East Fremantle (A).

Last time they met: R6, 2018 – South Fremantle 16.11 (107) d Swan Districts 14.10 (94).Three goals each from Cory Dell’Olio, Blaine Johnson and Matthew Parker proved the difference in the contest. Swans had their own busy forward line with Brayden Noble and Corey Gault each kicking four goals. The key: South Fremantle should be in finals mode. The Bulldogs will need to keep winning to secure the double chance so the gritty form against the Falcons needs to replicated in this round.

Saturday, Aug 11, 2.15pm

Perth ClaremontStory so far: Perth got a breather last week to prepare for one last assault on the finals. The Demons sit fourth at 7-8 but are far from guaranteed a berth in the September action. The most recent match, in Round 17, was a three-point loss to East Perth.Running hot: Corey Byrne worked tirelessly to keep up the Demons’ challenge in their latest outing. Byrne kicked three goals, had six inside 50m entries and 26 possessions to underline his impact on Earl Spalding’s team. Who is to come: South Fremantle (A), Subiaco (A).

Story so far: After a promising surge up the ladder mid-season, the Tigers have been stuttering. Claremont has slipped to seventh at 6-9, one win behind Peel, which has played one more match at this point of the season. Running hot: Ryan Lim has plenty of flashier teammates but he remains one of Claremont’s most reliable players. The 22-year-old has proven his value by missing just one league match in the past three seasons.Who is to come: Peel (H), Swan Districts (A).

Last time they met: R7, 2018 – Claremont 14.14 (98) lost to Perth 15.9 (99). The Demons led for just four minutes and it took a snap from Clint Jones in the dying seconds to secure a win that invigorated the team’s season. Blake Johnson kicked four goals for the victors. The key: There are a lot of WAFL observers expecting Perth to falter in the closing rounds. The effort against East Perth was again meritorious but the loss has jeopardised the Demons’ finals bid. Another defeat this week will be telling.

Leading goalkicker Award

West Australian based AFL field umpire Jeff Dalgleish will join an elite group of umpires when he officiates his 300th senior football match this weekend. Dalgleish, the ninth West Australian field umpire to reach the triple-century of League matches, joins WA field umpires Brett Rosebury, Dean Margetts, Craig Hendrie, Gavin Statham, Grant Vernon, Ray Montgomery, Luke Farmer and Michael Ball who have all got to the 300 club. Dalgleish began umpiring in 1999 in the East Fremantle juniors and the WA Amateur Football League. He progressed to professional football, making his WAFL umpiring debut in 2003 and his AFL debut in 2009. The highlight of his career was officiating the 2015 AFL Grand Final alongside WA’s Brett Rosebury. Dalgleish has recently joined the WA State Umpiring Advisory Group (SUAG) to provide measured and detailed thoughts on the future of WA umpiring. WA State Umpiring Manager David Crute congratulated Jeff on his achievement. “On behalf of the entire West Australian umpiring community, I would like to congratulate Jeff on reaching 300 games of senior football,” he said. “It’s an outstanding achievement at any level of sport. “Jeff is a hugely respected member of the umpiring family in WA. Despite the rigours of umpiring at the elite level, Jeff continues to give back to grass roots football playing a key role with our inaugural State Umpiring Advisory Group. “Quality role models are integral to attracting and retaining the next generation
