The Making of a Class Reunion"LOOKING FORWARD TO LOOKING BACK "by Larry Strong

It was 45 years in the making and two years in the planning for the TexasCity High School Class of 1970's 45 Year Class Reunion. This time aroundthings would be somewhat different from the reunions of the past. So manyof the faces we had known well in high school have passed on. There hadbeen a 10 year, 20 year, and 30 year reunion, but when it came to having a40 year reunion the time came and went without a gathering. Had Facebookreplaced the desire or need for an actual meeting for The Heavenly Class of'70? Where we feeling a bit disenfranchised since our beloved high schoolhad been razed? Are we orphans now? Maybe it is true, "you can't gohome." But we are the Fighting Stingarees! Once a Stingaree, always aStingaree! Right? This time around needed to be special and reconnect us all to the days weremember so fondly roaming the halls of Texas City High School and all theactivities on and off campus that went along with growing up in Texas City.What could be more memorable than "Homecoming," our theme for our45year Class Reunion? Activities began with a Homecoming Football gameparade on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 21, 2015 with the Class of1970 represented in the parade and followed by a pep rally in StingareeStadium that evening. The Homecoming Queen's court was introduced andthe Homecoming King was crowned. Thursday's activity was the TCISDFoundation for the Future Hall of Honor Banquet with two members of theClass of 1970 (Jeri Gilland and Marilyn Butler Hornung) being honored andinducted into the Hall of Honor giving our class year the most inductees todate - very proud of our fellow classmates and the contributions they havemade to society. Friday morning, October 23, 2015, began with Alumnibeing treated to an informative and guided tour of the new William R.Blocker Middle School and the new Texas City High School. It iscomforting to know that the latest groupings of TC students are beingprovided first rate, state of the art facilities for their academic pursuits andare being guided, mentored, and educated by an engaged, interested, and

knowledgeable group of educators, administrators, and staff. During ourhigh school tour, the alumni were treated to an impromptu performancesung by the TCHS Boys Choir. Sting Pride is alive and well. Later thatafternoon, TCHS Alumni were guests at the in-school Pep Rally. We wereseated in the "Senior" section of the gym grandstands - that put a wholenew spin on the term Seniors. After a break of a couple hours, the Class of1970 Alumni returned to TCHS for a pre-Homecoming Game meal in theschool cafeteria sponsored by the Quarterback Booster Club. This was awonderful experience of "breaking bread" together, reconnecting, andbonding again with so many former classmates. The weather forecast waspredicting rain for the Homecoming Football Game Friday night (deja vu ofour Graduation Night on May 29, 1970), but the weather held and it was agorgeous October evening for Homecoming and football. All alumni werehonored at the game and we lined up by decade on the track prior to thegame kickoff with each decade having there on Class Banner. The Class of1970 had special reserved seating on the "home side" of the grandstands atmidfield. We had an excellent view of the sideline cheerleaders, the gameon the field, and the Sting Band Halftime Show along with the crowningceremony of the Homecoming Queen. Best of all, the Stings won in a hardfought game against Woodridge High School. After the game, reunion goersmet for a postgame celebration at Gus' Restaurant on Palmer. The staffwas very attentive to our needs and took excellent care of us. Saturday morning had a variety of activities going on. There was a breakfast for the Class of 1970 and a special brunch just for all formerStingarettes. Once everyone finished eating, they were invited to join thedecorating party at the Nessler "Wings of Heritage" room - that is the samevenue where all of our football after game dances and Senior Prom wereheld. Following that, there was a period of free time for a self-guided tour ofthe Texas City Museum and time to explore 6th Street. Saturday night,October 24, 2015 was the Main Event Dinner and Dance. Even though thepredicted rain came in with a roar and strong winds, it couldn't dampen thecelebration going on inside of Nessler. We had great food catered by GrandPrize Catering, a free adult beverage bar hosted by Benny's Liquor WineBeer, and music of our high school years provided by David and KathyRossacci of After 5 Productions Event Services. There were exhibits anddisplays of school memorabilia, the history of Texas City schools and BigVictory (Big Vic), photographs, clothing/uniforms, and a Memorium honoringfellow classmates who have passed away. Barbara White was on hand withthe original photographs of former band students and Stingarettes that hungon the walls of the old band hall - they were available for purchase for adonation to the Band Booster Club. The beautiful and unique tabledecorations were in TCHS School colors with copies of the pages from theStingaree Yearbook of the Class of 1970 integrated into the design.Attendees received a Memory Book and special custom lanyard nametagfor keepsakes of the Main Event. Professional pictures of the event weretaken by "{a}Reid Photography and Graphic Creations" and are available forviewing on our Facebook Group Page under Texas City High School Classof 1970. Sunday, we closed out the reunion with a Farewell Breakfast for allthe out-of-town Alumni.

It was great seeing everyone, hearing their voices, listening to the laughter,enjoying the hugs, revisiting the past, catching up on 45 years of living, andstrengthening the bonds of high school and our cherished years together. Once a Stingaree . . . Always a Stingaree.

THE GOTCHA GHOULS!{Girls Of Texas City High Alumni}

On Halloween weekend 2015 the GOTCHA! Ghouls (girls) hit the town ofJefferson, Texas and it will never be the same!! To refresh your memory,The Girls of Texas City High Alumni was the brain child of DoloresGeaslin, TCHS class of 64. On January 15, 2005 we had the inaugural

Page 9: RECOGNIZED HALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES

GOTCHA! meeting at Gaidos in Galveston. 44 gorgeous women of theTCHS class of 1964 attended that initial meeting. Over the next 10 years,Dolores and new queen, Judy Holcomb Minter, have planned manywonderful meetings, parties, and excursions. The GOTCHA!'S goal is toenjoy and preserve the friendships that were formed as girls years go. Wehave a connection. We have history. Although the group was originallystarted by the TCHS class of 64, we now have members from classes ofthe 30's, 50's and 60's.

We are a fun group. We are a travel group. We are a " be there for you "group.

Lila Zieglemeyer and Mary Beth Porter planned an excellent weekend fortwenty-five GOTCHA! GHOULS. We stayed at the haunted Jefferson Hotelwhere some had ghostly visits. We rode the Fright train through the darkand scary forest, Joycelynn Grigson and Ginger Braselton Brock performeda hilarious spoof of Patsy Cline's "She's got you" at Karaoke night at AuntieSkinners,( I am sure the locals are still talking about that!!), we dressed upin our best Halloween costumes and danced the night away at a Halloweenparty, played games, and of course shopped, shopped, shopped. Jeffersonis a lovely town with almost everything in walking distance of the Jefferson
