    Sigmund Freud The Uncanny

    Freudofferedthefirstmajorresponsetoexplainouruncannyresponsetowardslife-likehumanmodels.Thetermuncannywasfirstusedinpsychology13yearsearlierbyaliDleknownGermandoctorcalledErnstJentsch.

    Freudbeginsbytryingtodefinethe

    uncanny:

    Thesubjectoftheuncanny..Itis

    undoubtedlyrelatedtowhatisfrightening

    towhatarousesdreadandhorror;

    equallycertainly,too,thewordisnotalwaysusedinaclearlydefinable

    sense,sothatittendstocoincidewithwhat

    excitesfearingeneral.

    Freud,realisingitisnotasimpledefini&on,

    thendescribesasetofcircumstancesthat

    reallyfittheworduncanny.

    Twocoursesareopentousattheoutset.

    Eitherwecanfindoutwhatmeaning has

    cometobeaDachedtotheworduncanny

    inthecourseofitshistory;orwe can

    collectallthoseproper&esofpersons,

    things,sense-impressions,experiences

    andsitua&onswhicharouseinusthefeelingofuncanniness,andtheninferthe

    unknownnatureoftheuncannyfrom

    whatalltheseexampleshaveincommon.

    Iwillsayatoncethatbothcourses

    leadtothesameresult:theuncannyisthat

    classofthefrighteningwhichleadsbackto

    whatisknownofoldandlongfamiliar.

    transala&onfromtheGermanunheimlich.Heimlichmeantbelong-ingtothehouseorthe

    family,notstrange,familiar,tame,in&mate,

    friendly,etcandcametomeanIn&mate,

    friendlycomfortable;arous-ingasenseof

    agreeableresulnessandsecurityasinone

    withinthefourwallsofhishouse.

    Furthermeaningsaremore

    interes&ng,andshowamore

    disturbingaspect.

    Concealed,keptfromsight,sothatothersdo

    notgettoknowoforaboutit,withheldfrom

    others.Todosomethingheimlich,i.e.,behind

    someonesback;tostealawayheimlich;heimlich

    mee&ngsandappointments;tolookonwith

    heimlichpleasureatsomeonesdiscomfiture;to

    sighorweepheim-lich;tobehaveheimlich,as

    thoughtherewassomethingtoconceal.

    Freudnotedthatbothwordsmeanthesame

    thing,andalsotheopposite:Whatinterestsusmostinthislongextractistofindthat

    amongitsdifferentshadesofmeaningthewordheimlich

    exhibitsonewhichisiden&calwithitsopposite,unheimlich.Whatisheimlichthuscomestobe

    unheimlich.Ingeneralweareremindedthattheword

    heimlichisnotunambiguous,butbelongstotwosetsof

    ideas,which,withoutbeingcontradictory,areyetvery

    different:ontheonehanditmeanswhatisfamiliarand

    agreeable,andontheotherwhatisconcealedandkept

    outofsight.
