New Year New You

Editor-in-ChiefKirsty Edwards-Harris

elcome to 2012!At the beginning of a new year, it

is customary to set yourself goals and make resolutions for the coming months

ahead. We can all strive to be the best we can be, to be more compassionate towards others, to devote

ourselves to charitable causes, to let our loved ones know that we care, to live our lives with passion and integrity, to make each day count and live in the moment. This month we feature inspirational role models who have committed themselves to taking on life’s challenges and reaching out to those in need. The Cause presents a story about Doctors from the Gulf who opened their eyes to the desperate plight of Somali refugees and went to their aid. We also sit down with Asya Bin Mahfood, Managing Director of the Nans Group Centre for Achieving Excellence and the founder of Duha Center for Communication and Social Guidance, whose concern for the welfare of others is paramount.

A popular goal this time of year is to get fit, tone up and lose weight, especially when looking at the ever-increasing numbers staring up at us from the scales after too much festive indulgence! Turn to our Wellbeing article where we offer advice from experts in the field on how to banish the bulge, as well as our top ten tips for a new you.

We’ve got your monthly, glossy fix of fashion with celebrity trends and tips and tricks on what to wear for the year ahead. We also chat with Haute Couturier, Ali Beydoun, to discover more about his remarkable talent. The Ohlala! Signature Fashion Shoot is not-to-be-missed, as we travel to the shores of Qatar to feature high-end, funky looks to inspire you to kick-start your wardrobe.

In Celebrity Scoop we chat with one of the most iconic faces of modern times — the world’s first Supermodel, Vogue cover girl, movie star, accomplished performer and Broadway and theatre star — Twiggy, about the release of her new album.

Want to know what life has in store for you in the upcoming year? Read your Horoscopes by our resident Astrologer, Giovanni — but remember, your future is in your own hands…

GIVING BACK

Every one of us, at some point, have taken our lives for granted; all it takes is a wake-up call to remind us of how fragile life really is. It is always exciting when you get the chance to write your own column. Having read many over the years, it is refreshing to see how each writer has their own approach of summing up the

past months and their expectations of times to come.

Having lived in Bahrain for over eight months now, the one thing I have noticed is that the Middle East is a hub for change. Although I arrived in the prime time of the country’s troubles; my life so far on this magical island has been just fantastic. Despite it existing as one of the smallest countries in the Gulf, Bahrain has So much to offer and what’s even more exciting is that so there’s so much more to discover!

Christmas saw an abundance of events; whether you wanted to brunch at the Moevenpick (a truly worthwhile experience for those who haven’t had the chance to go yet), or try out the new spa at the Sofitel or perhaps check out Boudoir at the Kempinski hotel… December has played host to one of the busiest periods of 2011. X-Clusive also celebrated their two-year anniversary where partygoers headed down to Tian in Adliya to dance away to some of the best music on the island. And with the fun times all over the island, every night was packed; whether you headed to Cocoon, JJ’s, Sherlock Holmes, the Ritz Carlton or Trader Vic's — you were sure to enjoy yourself.

Perhaps the main factor I have realised is that the phrase, “Living for the weekend” is one that rings true every Thursday, or maybe even Wednesday, the clock strikes five and the island oozes with excitement at the prospect that you have two days to truly let your hair down and sample the numerous events that are taking place.

one night that really did leave its mark on the island was New Year. With every hotel hosting huge parties, a few names stood out above the rest. First we have the Muju Ibiza party, where

over five musicians delighted a large crowd of countdowners with some sensational tunes, the Golden Tulip got taken over by partygoers (me being one of them) where the floor plan was jam packed with people desperate to make the most of the evening.

So what does 2012 have in store for us? Well, apart from the weekends looking more eventful by the second, Bahrain is sure to get busier this year. Despite the fact we are still kitted out in our winter gear; nothing beats the sunshine on your face when you make your way to work or take the time to relax on those well-deserved weekends off. We have the Bahrain Airshow, which will undoubtedly be as popular as Jewellery Arabia, the Boatshow and Motorshow last November. And, of course, we have Formula one — something we have all been anticipating. The island will be packed with car fanatics and this is truly the ultimate time to see the BIC at its best.

For now though, I am going to desperately attempt to stick to my New Year’s Resolutions (a phrase I repeat every year), which could be a hard task, especially when there are so many temptations! Hello gym — goodbye chocolate!

That’s me for now.

Feather Fashion

From celebs on the red carpet to runway shows, the fashion world is going a-flutter with feathers! While this dream-like trend may not be practical to wear on a daily basis, you can incorporate it into your wardrobe and dress up your Autumn/Winter neutrals. Ohlala! shows you how to get the look.

HoW to WEAr itFeathers have a fascinating flirtatious appeal to them. often associated with aristocrats and high society, feathers can inject glamour into clothes that are either straightforward or masculine. Wearing a delicate top tipped with feathers around the neckline will offset masculine, high-waist trousers. When wearing a full on cluster of feathers, avoid looking bird-like by sticking to small, fine feathers and make sure to keep accessories minimal or neutral in colour.

DressesFeather dresses are best left to formal or evening events. As the feather look is so dramatic, going for classic black is the safest option. Choose corseted dresses with jewel beading for a magical, enchanting look. For all you fearless fashionistas out there, try pieces that embrace bright, colourful feathers. You’ll be sure to make a statement.

AccessoriesHandbags and clutches have some of the most visible and eye-catching details and will have a great impact on your outfit. Hair accessories top your look with cute and youthful detail. Chic headbands echo the popular bohemian trend. Jewellery is all about flashing your style sense. Earrings offer bohemian-style looks that are totally in this season. For a unique and dramatic effect, try the variety that comes in bright, funky colours. Choose big feather earrings to help emphasise your cheekbones and compliment your hairstyle.

Page 22: Ohlala! Bahrain January 2012

ShoeSWant to add instant appeal to your attire? Work in a pair of feathered heels. These stunning shoes are sure to steal the show. For a low-profile look, opt for a pair of feathered sandals. Make sure to keep the rest of the outfit simple to allow your feathered feet to be the focal point.

PrintSThe easiest way to break into this trend without the extravagance is by selecting clothing that has feather prints or patterns. These pieces adopt a more colourful and versatile style due to the combination of the simple tailoring with the complex patterns.

New looksOhlala! gets you up-to-date with the latest designers, trends and style news from the fashion world.

Many of the clothing and accessories we wear in 2012 will be influenced by the most

recent season, Autumn/Winter 2011. We feature our favourite styles and fashionable pieces, which will have an impact on next season’s fashion trends.

Sheer MAxi SkirtIf you’re looking to defy the need for heavy winter fabrics this season, then try the sheer maxi skirt for 2012. This wispy, romantic look represents a fresh take on last season’s maxi skirt trend. Wear this flowing skirt with shorts or a slip underneath for modesty. Plenty of layering comes highly recommended when creating this trend for winter. Adding a blazer, chunky knitwear, leather jacket or fur vest are all great options.

Block heelSChunky yet sturdy, these substantial heels are great for women who never dare to venture out in stilettos. The comfort of these square-heeled shoes makes up for their awkward appearance. The sandal variety is a great choice to get you through the entire year. They can be worn with tights or schoolgirl socks for now and will be perfectly Boho-chic come spring.

GlADStone BAGThe Gladstone bag, or doctor’s bag, was once a working man’s asset, but today has become a woman’s arm-luxury. Due to its boxy shape, be mindful of what you team it with. It works well with cigarette pants and a blazer, or a mid-length shift dress or pencil skirt. Functional, elegant and back in our sights for 2012, this bag is an accessory worth investing in.

collAr necklAceSCollar necklaces are the hottest jewellery trend to take with you into 2012. Their unique design makes them the perfect statement piece, one that completes the whole look. Add a touch of feminine glamour to a simple shirt by popping a statement necklace under the collar. These statement accessories look best when paired with monochrome or minimalistic outfits, but if you are one of those who favour the bolder look, match them with colours, stripes or prints for a dramatic ensemble.

Vintage Vibe

Fashion from the 1940s is such a

classic look that it never rea

lly goes

out of style and is on trend right

now. The softness of Estelle’s cardigan

exudes femininity while the delicate

beading is truly reminiscent of the

1940s. Her A-line dress, with the

hemline just below the knee, is a

classic shape from this era and the

polka dots give it a retro feel. Polka

dots are also in this season — they are

chic, feminine and flirty. Swap the

ballerina pumps for closed-toe chunky

heels, add a bold red lipstick and

Estelle’s outfit shouts out vintage vibe.

Will you be experimenting with

This is a man’s world

Menswear-inspired fashion is a strong

direction for this winter. Wearing

single elements of the trend is just as

effective as going for the full look. Dalia

has done just this. She has chosen a

striped boyfriend style cardigan and

an oversized white colla

red shirt worn

loosely, to create masculine touches in

her outfit. She pairs this with jeans and

sneakers for a casual style. To glam up

this look, replace with skinny leather

trousers and a pair of fashionable

brogues. The addition of a pashmina

softens the outfit and hints to her

feminine side. Bright, retro blue nail

Too Hot to Trot

Mariam takes on one of this season’s

hottest trends — animal prints — in

this case, horses. As the pattern of this

of her look neutral and streamlined

trend, unless you have a bold and

manages to create a cute girly look,

but this trend is so versatile you can

have you always had an interest in fashion? nicole J robertson. Music had a huge influence on me when I was growing up and my love of fashion really came from that… I remember, as a teenager during my college days, taking weekend trips to London and scouring Portobello Market and the Kings Road for something cool and a bit different, and loved buying from undiscovered designers. has your previous experience helped get you where you are today? nr. Without a doubt! I have been extremely fortunate to work with both talented and passionate people in the industry and they have hugely influenced my career. name three qualities it takes to make it in your profession. nr. Passion, talent and an obsession with fashion.

What advice would you give to those considering entering into the profession? nr. You really have to love what you do and be prepared to work hard!

how do you go about selecting pieces to go into Saks? nr. A love and obsession first and foremost. In a market like the Gulf, which is constantly evolving; we are buying for a diverse market, first and foremost you need to understand your customer and your market and the aim is in ensuring that we have a fashionable, attractive and commercial selection.

Would you consider new brands, or do you only look at the well-known ones? nr. Fashion is a constantly evolving business so you have to keep up with what’s going on; what’s the newest, the hottest, the must haves, as this is what our customers demand. This season we are adding over 20 new brands, such as Issa London, Manish Arora and Day Birger et Mikkelsen. We are also offering a much wider selection of denim brands, with J Brand, James, MiH and Mother — all new to Saks for Spring. What are your favourite brands and why? nr. My personal style is pretty relaxed so I love Stella McCartney as a designer. She knows how to design for women; feminine but with an edge. I love IRO this season, the Parisian duo do casual in such a cool way, and as a huge denim lover, I am having a love affair with Mother. They do the 70s so well and their denim is super soft. What is your favourite buy this season? nr. I loved Paco Rabanne and am very excited that its arriving soon and exclusive to Saks. Also we have KaufmanFranco and Andrew GN, which are to die for! So glamorous! I also love DVF’s resort collection — the colours and prints are perfect for our warmer winters!

overty, drought and epidemics such as HIV are just a few of the horrific

challenges facing Somalia today. With a current population of just over 9.5 million

(according to The World Bank statistics), the life expectancy stands at a shockingly low 50.6 years.

The infant mortality rate is also high at 108.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Living in appalling conditions with an unstable economic situation, approximately 43 percent of Somalia’s population live below the poverty line and have had to come to terms with living with scarcity on a permanent basis. A large majority of Somalians, however, take refuge in other countries in order to escape their own home’s life-threatening circumstances.

the AWAkeninGAt the end of 2011, Dr Mohammed Shahda decided to embark on a life-changing journey to Kenya to an area called Dadaab, which Dr Mohammed now refers to as “The Dark City”; a semi-arid town in the North Eastern Province. Here lies the largest refugee camp in the world, where more than 700,000 refugees are currently seeking food and shelter with an influx of 2000 refugees daily. A staggering 90 percent of these have fled from neighbouring Somalia due to civil war.

Having been convinced by human rights activist Fajer Mufeez, who had previously visited the camp, Dr Shahda, accompanied by Dr Mohammed D’Ayed joined the Alliance of International Doctors to represent medical help from Bahrain.

What they faced was an unimaginable and grueling two-week challenge that seemed to take them back in time; every facility or mode of transport seemed to be out-dated by several decades. Dr Shahda says, “It was like seeing the opposite face of the world.” Every single refugee in the camp lives without the basic necessities and after 5pm they endure complete darkness. “One moment, which stands out, was when I saw a man eating out of

a rubbish bin right in front of me — I was really affected by this, and it was only the beginning…”

MeDicAl helPBoth Dr Shahda and Dr D’Ayed worked together in the medical camp; a simple set up with few resources. Due to the lack of clinical aid, the doctors decided to establish the clinic before they left where doctors are now able to visit and continue their important help. Coordinated by a group of youth and human rights activists, the clinic is supported through the donations made by fellow Bahrainis and since its establishment a number of doctors have travelled to Dadaab to support the refugees through their sufferings.

leSSonS leArnt“The experience really helped me to appreciate the simple necessities that we have in life, which Somalians would consider luxuries, such as not having to walk hundreds of miles for food and water. What is most devastating is that they have such dark expectations of the future; they don’t know if they are going to even last the night, let alone the days ahead. My trip made me realise that the world is a greedy and selfish place, perhaps more so now than ever before,” Dr Shahda comments. Since his return to the island, he has been putting the story together about his experiences during the trip. He is hoping that sharing this story will raise awareness across the Gulf.

hoW YoU cAn helP?Dr Shahda and the AID foundation are desperate to encourage others to follow in their footsteps and make a worthwhile trip like theirs. In the future they hope to visit other areas, where refugees face the same struggles.

If you are interested in helping, no matter how large or small, please email [email protected] to find out how you can become involved in this very worthwhile and fundamental organisation.

hat state would the world be in today if there

were not people who found it within themselves to strive for

the betterment of those in need? Committing yourself to the service of

others is no easy task, as Asya Bin Mahfood freely admits, but it is something that is an intrinsic

part of her nature, and what she does with determination. Having worked with children with learning difficulties and disabilities for over 20 years, she recognises the importance of providing opportunities for them thrive to the best of their ability, despite the challenges they face. Moving forward with commitment, patience and understanding, Asya finds solace in the joy she experiences from helping children and making a difference in their lives.

Why did you choose to get involved in this field?Asya Bin Mahfood. Fortunately, no-one in my family suffers from these difficulties, which I am very grateful for. Helping others just comes naturally to me. From a very young age I have always been involved in giving back to society. I can see in this part of the world that children with learning difficulties or disabilities are not being given the opportunities that they need. Every child deserves the right to be educated and live a sincere life, despite the challenges life has given them.

What is your educational background?A.M. I gained a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Communication from the States. When I moved back to Saudi Arabia I completed a Diploma in Communicating with Autistic Children, and a Speech and Hearing internship in a clinic in Saudi Arabia. My Masters of Special Education is in Intellectual Disabilities and Autism from Gulf University Bahrain. Even with 20 years in the field, being educated, working for others and having my own business, it’s always like taking the first step as there is so much to discover. It is a field of continuous learning and very challenging to work in.

Why Bahrain?A.M. As a Saudi living in my second home, Bahrain, I wanted to honour the people of this beloved kingdom by serving their children. Bahrain is a unique place for me because it combines the east and the west — it is a melting pot of cultures, which I enjoy, while appreciating who I am and respecting my background. It is this that adds spice to my personality and my work life. This is the legacy of Bahrain, to be able to combine all types of social strata and cultures.

What are the differences between the women of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain?A.M. Women in Saudi are not really any different to any other women in the world. Many Saudi ladies are well educated and run their own businesses. They are involved in a variety of fields, such as fashion, management, education, media, hospitals, banking and even industrial work. They are also able to own property and cars. Women in Saudi are high achievers, and his majesty King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has been a big support for Saudi females by providing educational international scholarships and job opportunities. The country is conservative but this is due to the culture and traditions more than the religion we follow.

What drives you?A.M. Knowing that I can put a smile on a child’s face and make them happy. To see them responding and know that what I’m doing is helping them to become an integral part of society is my passion.

Ten years ago, I started working with a child who had previously been in therapy for three years and was still non-verbal. I had been working with him less than a year, when he started using his first words. It was the AHA moment for me. It made me realise that nothing is impossible when you have a challenging mind and a giving heart. This inspires me and is what I need to keep going, to move forward and know that I am making a difference.

For a woman to become successful or to be a leader — to be powerful — doesn’t mean they need to be less feminine, but to be more compassionate. It represents my idea of learning — giving is taking — it allows us all to grow. It is my joy to learn and keep evolving while giving back to others and providing the best I can give personally and professionally. For me, it is a complete package of healing emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally.

how will you be moving forward with the nans Group centre? A.M. I believe my experience will be a unique one. As the Managing Director of the Nans Group Centre for Achieving

Excellence and a founder of Duha Center for Communication and Social Guidance, combining these two services will be the west and the east coming together as a team to work at accomplishing this priceless mission of helping the children of Bahrain.

Moving forward I will combine managing with the clinical and educational service in a way that will be affective to serve our children productively. Our goal is to provide a holistic program in English, Arabic and French for children to assist them in overcoming their speech and language difficulties and disorders, intellectual difficulties, behavioural and social

issues, and those with autism. Besides providing social guidance services from the Centre, along with speech therapy, we will implement home visitations and school programs.

Combining my Duha Centre of Communication with the Nans Group Centre, we are moving forward together in partnership to expand our services to those in need and I’m really optimistic that we will have every success.

I believe to be successful on my own is very good; to succeed as a team is even better!

how do you think these programs help with children’s disabilities?A.M. In addition to providing a full team service under one umbrella, it assists them to integrate more smoothly into society, helping them to organise their environment wherever they go. It gives them the tools to be functional in communicating and expressing their needs and emotions. The child is also given the opportunity to thrive, to reach their maximum capability intellectually and academically. This improves the quality of their life, regardless of their background or the society in which they live.

Why is spreading awareness regarding this cause important?A.M. There is a very big stigma surrounding the subject. From

“Every child deserves the right

to be educated and live a sincere life, despite the

challenges life has given them.”

Page 36: Ohlala! Bahrain January 2012

my experience of working in this field, most people don’t know that these children are harmless and that they can be an effective part of society. Children with difficulties are often left behind because parents are not aware that they can get help and there is always hope for them. In many cases they seek help too late due to their lack of awareness. One of the tools we use is giving presentations and workshops on the difficulties children face, how to detect problems in the early stages of a child’s life, and how to provide early intervention and proper treatment. This is to help gather support from the community for these children, especially for those whose family cannot afford treatment. Children are the foundation of every country, and children with difficulties deserve even more support than others as they have special needs.

What about those children whose families cannot afford to seek assistance? A.M. We do our best to look for funding and sponsorship from companies to help children whose parents are less financially fortunate. They can assist in paying fees for the program, sponsoring tools and equipment, or even in providing social support.

What has been your greatest challenge?A.M. My greatest challenge is to continue integrating into other

cultures while honoring who I am and where I come from. I spent time in the States and have travelled around the world for training purposes. Wherever I go this challenge is with me but I love to embrace it.

Communication is the key, if I am isolated, how will others learn about our culture. It is necessary to accept the beliefs and backgrounds of others to be able to help them. I’m naturally social and open; I believe it is a uniqueness within me, which enables me to share my experiences. I was the first female in my family to seek a professional job, to be on my own, and to own a business. It has been the toughest challenge for me and that’s the beauty of my achievements.

What are the most important qualities for someone who works within this field to have?A.M. Loving what you do is the most important element in this field; without passion you can’t make it, even if you are fully qualified. It requires commitment, patience and understanding. To accept that in this field will always be work in progress.

What advice would you give to those entering into this field?A.M. This field is more of a service than a business. The reward is not materialistic, more the inner satisfaction and the joy you get from helping others in making progress and a difference in their lives. Loving what you do is the key to success.

“Nothing is impossible

when you have a challenging

mind and a giving heart.”

35

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?A.M. There are several but the ones helped in my field are:“Courage is fear that has said its prayers.” This helped me overcome my fears of reopening my business after my health difficulties.

“Even if I knew that the world was falling apart, I would still plant my palm tree.” This really gave me the strength to keep going, to continue to offer my services to the children during the sad incidence in Bahrain, even when I had to move in order for the children to receive the help they needed.

“Patience is key to paradise.” This keeps me optimistic, regardless of the circumstances, especially when I see the progress of my service.

One of my favourites is, “The best is yet to come.” This drives me forward to accomplish more. I believe that life is an adventurous journey, it is not destination. Experience and challenges enable you to grow but having faith is essential.

how can people help?A.M. I’ve worked as a volunteer for the last three years in developing this service for children with disabilities. I believe I am making a difference, but the more people who get involved, the better we can help. We’re happy for people to assist in any way to make a difference in children’s lives and will be grateful for any support. Contact: 3370 0319/ 1730 0286 [email protected]

is there anything that you would like to add?A.M. I would like to thank the UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) for their support as an entrepreneur, and Mr John Hughes, for taking the step of uniting as a team in order to greater assist serving children of Bahrain.

one of the most iconic faces of modern times, twiggy continues to capture the public imagination. With the release of her latest album, Romantically Yours, twiggy talks to Ben Whittaker about her music, life and what

still motivates her after so many years in the public eye.

Twiggy Makes HerselfRomantically Yours

he changing tastes and demands of audiences and

the entertainment industry seem to have left Twiggy untouched. Since

she first hit the headlines as a teenager in the mid-sixties, Twiggy has sashayed from

one success to another, continually reinventing herself and always ahead of the game.

Vogue cover girl, globally successful model, movie star, accomplished performer, Broadway and theatre star, and the face of the M&S brand, she has touched on almost every aspect of entertainment, gaining in stature every inch of the way.

As her new album — her first in over a decade — Romantically Yours hits the stores, we meet to talk about this release.

“It all came about the way many things in this industry develop; by accident. It certainly wasn’t meticulously planned,” she smiles. “I had been talking in a fairly relaxed way about doing something in the studio and then EMI approached me, keen to take up the idea. We decided to go with the theme of classic songs, songs that people from all generations might enjoy and I set about picking my favourites.

“Initially I chose 50! But eventually I managed to whittle it down to 12 tracks. My biggest requirement, aside from liking the songs, was that they were all romantic songs that other people could relate to, with timeless classics very much the focal point.”

The album gave Twiggy the chance to perform with her daughter, Carly on the Neil Young track Only Love Can Break Your Heart. “I thought it would be a memorable thing to do and when I suggested the idea to

Page 40: Ohlala! Bahrain January 2012

Celebrity Scoop

Carly she said she would do it if she liked the song. Fortunately we found one we both loved!”

Twiggy started work on the album in the autumn of 2010 and the initial plan was to release it in time for Mother’s Day. “It was a great idea but I was so busy it meant that I couldn’t get everything done in time, so our next option was to make it a Christmas release here in the UK. It did give me more time to tweak the album and grow with it. I also wanted to do some filming for it.”

From fashion icon to international music artist seems quite a clever journey. “I’d like to say I was clever and can take credit for it myself but that wasn’t how it happened. I do think it is important to evolve and adapt but after five years in the fashion industry, going from an unknown Londoner to Vogue cover girl, it was thanks to the lovely Ken Russell that I made the transition from magazines to movies.

“It was totally his idea. He had me in mind for the lead in The Boyfriend and he sent me off to singing and dancing lessons. The studio was understandably nervous but Ken was not for turning and he surrounded me with some fabulously talented people, which helped my learning experience and the project got the greenlight.

“I owe him a great deal for his perseverance and he will be sorely missed. There are few visionaries like Ken left in the industry.”

The Boyfriend earned Twiggy two Golden Globe Awards that led to further film projects and also a TV show. She also released a number of albums and scored chart success with her single Here I Go Again.

However, having tasted critical and commercial success with acting and music, the early 80s saw her come to the attention of Broadway when she was enticed to America, to star in My One and Only.

“Film is one thing but the live experience was a whole new dimension and for me it was nerve-racking at first. We did an initial run in Boston, which was wonderful but the Broadway opening night is something I do not remember to this day because I was so nervous. But performing on stage in a hit musical is one of the greatest professional experiences of my life.”

Throughout her career Twiggy has enjoyed a very warm relationship with the US and from her first American Vogue front cover in 1967 to her business ventures today, it is a country she retains close links with. “I love America and the American people. They have always been very warm and generous to me as an artist and I have kept a very strong connection with the country. I have friends on both the East and West coasts — and a few in-between — and I’m back and forth to New York regularly. I think I am what’s known as a Nylon!

“I did a period as a judge on America’s Next Top Model and have a clothing business on the Home Shopping Network in America so it’s like a second home to me. Only the other week I got a call

from some friends in LA who told me they saw a 20-foot poster of me from the 70s on the side of a building and it made me smile.

“Of course, the fashion business was the industry that gave me my big break and without that, well, I wouldn’t be here talking to you,” she grins. Does that mean she considers herself less the Londoner and more cosmopolitan these days? “No, I’m a London girl at heart and I like nothing more than coming home from wherever I am and closing my door on the world and just relaxing with my husband.”

And how does someone like Twiggy unwind? “I like being a wife and mum — although my children are all grown up now — and I like doing normal things; cooking and sewing, and I have become absolutely obsessed with jigsaw puzzles. I also still keep up my tap dancing — it’s a fun alternative to the gym and helps keep me fit.

“I have a passion for animal welfare and support the cause of animals whenever I can as they don’t have a voice so they need

someone to speak up for them. Also, supporting the fight against breast cancer is high on my agenda and I am always happy to help in this cause where I can.”

The New Year sees little let up in her schedule, as Twiggy will be preparing for the big launch of Romantically Yours in the States. “It comes out around February 1 — just in time for Valentine’s Day — and my husband and I have our clothing business to keep an eye on.”

So, what advice does she have for anyone who is thinking of forging a career in music, film or fashion today? “It’s tough out there. The music industry has moved away from physical sales and down the route of digital, which certainly makes sense but it does take a little of the personality out of the experience. I

loved the whole feeling of buying and appreciating an album. “As for fashion, well fashion is meant to change and evolve so

I guess in answer to your question, if you are keen on pursuing a career in any of these fields be prepared to work hard and to expect the unexpected because really, nobody knows anything for sure.”

Of course I couldn’t close without mentioning those famous M&S adverts. “They were really fun to do and I think you can see that in the finished product. I got to meet and work with some wonderful people. We have some exciting new plans to work with M&S in the future.”

I came away from the interview impressed by Twiggy’s unassuming and generous nature. Here is an extraordinary woman unconcerned about celebrity for its own sake. Here is a woman who has achieved what she wanted through hard work but also always ready to acknowledge the part others have played in her success.

Now that is iconic.

From a detailed sketch, the exquisite designs of the award winning couturier, Ali Beydoun, are passionately transformed into sought after wearable works of art. it is entirely understandable why the Ministry of tourism would elect Qatar’s resident haute couturier to design the collection of gowns for the esteemed Miss Arab World 2011 Pageant. it is an accolade that is testament to the achievements of a man who truly knows what women want. Judith Jones discovers what’s behind his remarkable talent.

“I design for every woman. Each one has her own character and charisma. It is too monotonous and boring to design for just one specific type of woman.”

pleasure of seeing,

t o u c h i n g and ultimately

wearing an Ali Beydoun gown, is a treat every woman should be awarded. Ali is a passionate designer with an infinite imagination portrayed beautifully in each and every one of his couture creations.

Of Lebanese origin, Ali’s passion for fashion began at age 11. Seeing the Lebanese diva ‘Sabah’ on TV one New Year’s Eve was a significant moment that triggered in him a desire to create beautiful designs. Inspired by all that glitters and sparkles, he began to embrace these elements into his sketches, and as he states, “That’s how the story began… “

Initially, he was encouraged by his classmates to pursue his desire to be a fashion designer. He enjoyed capturing their attention. “They would stand over me during classes and watch me sketch; amazed at my drawings they would constantly ask from where I found my ideas,” claims Ali. However, his Social Sciences teacher was not such a fan and complained, “Ali is making designs and patterns while I am trying to explain the lesson!”

Ali’s mother, elder sisters, other female relatives and friends were influential in how he developed his eye for style and colour; being surrounded by women allowed him the opportunity to observe their tastes and how women like to dress, which had a major impact on him.

A career in fashion design was certainly not mapped out though; Ali’s father had plans for his son to become either a surgeon or an engineer. Having already acquired a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Diploma for Agricultural Engineering from the American University in Beirut, it was Ali’s decision to risk moving to London and enter business school to complete his post graduate studies. However, his overwhelming desire to create swayed him towards the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art, where his remarkable talent for original design was recognised and he was duly accepted. At that time his inspiration came from Lebanese Designer, William Khoury, while later on he came to greatly admire the work of Valentino among others.

Forward to 2007 and Ali’s arrival in Qatar. His plan — “To establish myself as Qatar’s famous fashion designer. I wanted to move to a country where there were not many well-known designers. At this time there were no designers in Qatar doing catwalk fashion shows, fashion photography, none with a website or appearing in magazines and on the internet,” explains Ali. “I think that move began a handful of blessings that opened up many opportunities for me.”

When asked about the challenges of setting up his business in Qatar, Ali explains he first had to gain the trust of his clients. His style and technique of creating garments was a brand new entity and he had to convince Qatari ladies, who may have initially seen this form of design as bizarre. “I design for every woman. Each one has her own character and charisma. It is too monotonous and boring to design for just one specific type of woman,” says Ali.

Having proved himself as a talented couturier in Qatar, Ali enjoys an established client base, working from his couture house off Salwa Road. Walking into the villa is akin to peeking inside a jewellery box. Mannequins pose in fantasy gowns swathed in Swarovski crystals; a rail of colourful dresses gracefully display the hand-craftsmanship of beadwork and intricate embellishment that Ali and the talented ladies who help him have lovingly created. The time taken to produce a gown can be between two days to six months depending on the design.

Ali travels to Première Vision exhibition in Paris to preview the latest haute couture fabrics, while also sourcing fabrics and accessories from Italy and France. A catalogue supplied

by Swarovski crystals displays the latest trends in beadwork and gem technology and trips to fashion weeks in Paris, Rome, New York and London provide the latest haute couture trends.

‘Blooming Winter Rose’ is the charming name given to his latest collection, which embodies elements of blooming petals in each piece. Colours are feminine and sexy; ruby red, black diamond, nude and beige and a splash of gold and platinum. Silver and crystals add shine and sparkle to each piece.

When asked about plans to expand his business Ali explains, “I have already

started showing in Rome, Italy, during the Alta Moda Alta Roma fashion week, which hosts renowned international designers. Whilst there I received the Oriental Award for Young Fashion Designer from the Orient.” Despite having a solid reputation throughout the Gulf, obviously it’s the dream of every designer to achieve worldwide recognition and Ali aspires to gain attention in Paris and New York. “I would love to see Queens, Princesses and First Ladies wearing my designs.”

What’s ahead for Mr Beydoun? “The future looks so pure, so fresh and so young,” says Ali. “Like the onset of almond flowers blossoming at early spring: This would be a good inspiration for my Spring/Summer collection.”

When asked what his perception of ‘style’ is, Ali explains, “Style is all about personality; let it have its way out, let colours express your feelings, your mood and state of mind. Be honest in your choice and don’t just imitate or present yourself as a false copy or a ‘wannabe’. No matter what sort of problems may face you, confront them; be strong and believe in yourself. Make your dreams become reality by fighting hard to attain them. Life is beautiful — just have that beautiful mind.”

Try to limit the use of hair appliances. Do not use them every time you wash your hair as hairdryers, flat irons and curling tongs cause the hair to become more porous which makes it difficult to maintain the colour. On occasions when you do dry it, apply a serum after washing and conditioning your hair before drying. This will help to protect against heat and moisture loss and give your hair a silky finish. Then put your head upside down and dry the underneath of the hair so that the heat doesn’t reach the outside hair shaft.

duMP thE JuNKOkay, so the occasional treat is not going to kill you, but eating junk on a regular basis will not only pile on the pounds but also make your feel lethargic and can lead to a whole host of life-threatening diseases, as it is toxic to your body. Make the effort to cut the junk out of your diet. Avoid fatty, sugary and processed foods: Burgers, chips, sweets, cake, sodas, chocolate, crisps, white flour products, dairy products, TV dinners, fast food, high fat and processed meats as well as caffeine and alchol. Make an appointment with a Nutritionist.

dEtoXYou body may have been suffering from toxic overload for years, and it is in need of help. Give your body a break and assist it in getting rid of the accumulated toxins and waste by eating lots of organic, fresh fruit and vegetables, go on a juice diet, get a detoxifying massage, have colonic hydrotherapy. There are many alternative therapy centres in Bahrain offering a whole host of treatments. Book yourself in and get advice from the experts.

PuMP uP thE voLuMEThe New Year is an excellent time to get your blood pumping and muscles fit and toned. Exercise does wonders for your state of mind and confidence, as well as for the health and look of your body. Join a gym, an exercise class, a sports team, or grab a friend and go for a brisk walk; there are plenty of fun ways to keep fit in Bahrain. For that added push, hire a Personal Trainer.

BooSt youR CoNFidENCEIf you are not happy with your appearance, then do something about it. Perhaps you have a scar or mole, which affects your appearance, or wrinkles that are just getting you down. Look out for a good cosmetic centre; speak to friends and family and choose one that comes recommended and has expertly qualified staff as well as cutting edge technology. It’s not always necessary to go under the knife; there are plenty of effective, non-evasive treatments available.

SMiLEGone are the days when people feared going to the Dentist; with the advancement in technology and new procedures, visiting the dentist should be a relatively painless experience. Make the appointment and get your teeth fixed before it’s too late. Get those fillings done and teeth cleaned. It’s important to feel confident when you smile, so if you don't, sort out the issue. If your teeth are stained yellow, get them whitened, and if they are overly crooked, have them straightened. Have a unique smile makeover for the New Year. Seef Dental has experienced Aesthetic Specialists to help you start 2012 with a smile.

GEt A MAKEovERPampering yourself can make you feel like a brand new person. Take the time for a massage, get your skin exfoliated, treat yourself to a mani-pedi, visit a salon or makeup boutique for beauty tips. There’s a fantastic range of venues in Bahrain offering numerous services. Dessange offers some great packages to take advantage of.

REvAMP youR WARdRoBEIt’s a great time to discover a whole new style. Give old clothes that you never wear, don’t fit or are damaged to charity. Cut out pictures in magazines of looks that you like and keep you eye open for items that will suit your style. Make investment buys for longer-term use and if you have no clue at all, get advice from a friend whose style you admire, or hire an Image Consultant.

GEt A LiFE CoAChA Life Coach or qualified Counselor can help you work through issues, which may be holding you back from being your best and achieving you dreams. It’s important to do a stop check and life review to see where you can improve, make changes and get ahead. Don’t let life get you down, live for today and make every moment count.

CoLouR youR hoMEMoving house or redecorating your home can bring it, and you, a new lease of life. Look in magazines to get inspiration, then head to the malls, or get advice from an interior designer. Incorporating the principles of Feng Shui into your home can have added benefits as it is believed to improve your life by enhancing the correct flow of energy. There are plenty or books on the subject, or you can seek out a Feng Shui Consultant.

tAKE A BREAKIt’s important to schedule in periods of rest in your life to recuperate your mind, body and soul. No-one can run at 100 percent 24-hours, seven days a week, all year round. So book that beach holiday, travel to a retreat or venture into the unknown for some much-needed R&R. ew Year’s resolutions to ‘get fit’ usually

fizzle out before you can say, “A can of diet soda

please.” Quick fix diets and an occasional spurt on the treadmill

will not achieve long term results or a fitness level that you aspire to.

Craig explains, “The problem that many face is that you cannot out-train a bad diet. It only takes minutes, seconds even, for you to do a whole lot of damage to your nutritional plan, which will only result in that number going up on the scales as well as your dress size.”

toP FivE tiPS to BANiSh thE BuLGELarge Compound MovementsWhen in the gym, use large compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, lunges, lateral pulldowns (strength training exercises) and the chest press. Using more muscles means burning more calories. This will help shift some of the unwanted fat you’ve acquired over the holidays.

Free-Weight / Bodyweight ExercisesIf you have the ability to perform free-weight or bodyweight exercises with the correct technique and with minimal risk of injury, then always choose these. These are more realistic to real life situations and will rely on you using more muscles than Fixed Path machines that you see in a lot of commercial gyms.

Super-Set and Non-Competing Super-SetsNon-competing sets make the most sense. Performing two exercises one after the other with no rest is great (super-sets); performing two exercises one after the other with no rest, which have nothing to do with one another (non-competing) is even better! Try some form of leg exercise immediately followed by an upper body exercise. You’ll be out of breath and fatigued at the end of it, but you’ll notice the benefits immediately.

Nutrition, Nutrition, NutritionRevise your nutritional goals and habits and make any changes you need to. Limit your intake of complex carbohydrates unless it is straight after a good workout. Avoid the simple refined carbs’ like white bread, white pasta, sweets, cakes and starches; the body cannot process these and tends to store most of them as body fat.

Partner-upThere have been many studies, which have shown how powerful social support is when it comes to health and fitness. Team up with a friend or family member to give you that extra motivation (and push out of the door) the next time you’re talking yourself out of going to the gym. By choosing your partner carefully you are making yourself accountable, and when you do this, you dramatically increase your chances of success.

January is the month to counteract the splurge that the festive season bestows upon us. Diabetes is a condition where our blood glucose levels are above the normal rate. There are two main types of diabetes: Type

1 is when the body does not produce any insulin at all therefore it must be injected daily. Type 2 diabetes is when insufficient insulin produced or the body is unable to use the existing insulin. The figures show that 80 percent of people suffering from this disease have Type 2 diabetes; a form which is now a growing public health problem with an alarming number of the

younger generation suffering from the condition.

Diabetes problems (damage to heart, blood vessels, eyes, nerves and kidneys) can be prevented by reaching your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol goals. Early diagnosis of diabetes and screening for all other factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are important.

Early introduction of medications soon after diagnosis and up titrating with multiple medications is usually required.

Diabetics who tightly control their

blood sugars, even if only for the first decade after they are diagnosed, have lower risks of heart attack, death and other complications later in their life, a large follow-up study has found. This is called legacy effect.

Controlling fluctuations (ups and downs) of blood sugar levels after food is important to prevent long term complications of diabetes. Not every patient will undergo the same diabetic treatment. Personalised treatment choices are available, each with their own treatment goals. Gaining weight and Hypoglycemia (low blood

Every diabetic should also monitor their blood sugar levels at home as the results can aid their doctor to make a plan to keep you glucose goals realistic and the levels under control.

It is also very important to consult your dietician regarding the food choices you make. Exercise is also essential but it is imperative to receive advice from your doctor about which forms you are allowed to do. It has been proven that by controlling your blood pressure your diabetic complications can be reduced by up to 50 percent.

Dr Yadla Sreenivas says, “Although diabetes is a disease which affects a considerably large number of people, living with it does not mean you have to stop enjoying life. There are achievable steps which can be taken to ensure a happy and healthier life.

inked to the ancient Silk Route, the concept of the restaurant, George Cherian, Managing Partner tells us, “Is to incorporate cuisine from the regions along this route. As we progress, the menu will evolve with a wider variety, which we

hope will entice our guests to sample delicious cuisine and beverages in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.” It is this inviting, laissez-faire ambience that has already won the hearts of the island’s residents since its opening only six months ago.

Obviously thrilled with the outcome of the Dining Awards, George describes the moment of winning as “An exhilarating feeling of satisfaction; our staff can take a bow as they have worked extremely hard to get us to where we are today.” He also thanks the uncompromising “Quality of the food, presentation and preparation, and our super guests and regulars who have supported us from the beginning and voted for us in this competition, without whom we would not be here.

“For those of you who have not yet been to Mei n Yu, Partner Nadeem Asgharali and myself would like to welcome you to one of the nicest developments in Bahrain, The Lagoon, Amwaj, where we are located, to sample our cuisine, hospitality and great views. There is also limited seating outside, which is superb when the weather is fine... Now is a great time to take advantage of the cooler temperatures.”

At Mei n Yu, eating is more than just nourishment for the body, it is an all encompassing dining experience, where you will savour not only the exquisitely cooked dishes

(and do remember, you cannot rush perfection) but also the delightful surroundings and good company. Enter the laid-back dining haven of Mei n Yu and immerse yourself in the moment. Admire the warm and tastefully decorated interiors, soft lighting and flickering candles, while you sit back, relax and browse the diverse menu to the chilled out sounds of various artists like Norah Jones. The friendly staff will be happy to recommend dishes and refreshments for the undecided amongst you. Choose to sit inside for a cosy dining experience, or outside in the fresh air for a tranquil view across The Lagoon.

Why not begin your dining experience with a delicious soup? Perhaps try the Chef ’s Special Cappuccino of Wild Mushrooms; a smooth soup, light and earthy with creamy froth, or the Mei n Yu Roasted Fennel & Orange; a delicious combination of delicate flavours. While you wait for your meal, snack on varieties of freshly baked, warm bread with accompanying pesto, creamed blue cheese and herb butter. There is a wide range of salads and starters to delight your taste buds. George recommends the House Special, Mei n Yu Chicken Lettuce Wraps; a tantalising blend of crispy, moist lettuce and spicy chicken, or the Blue Cheese & Pear Salad topped with candied walnuts and drizzled with a divine strawberry and white balsamic dressing — just a few of the mouthwatering choices available. We devoured the tasty Smoked Hammour Pate served with pomegranate seeds, salad and crunchy toast; light, fluffy and refreshing, the fish is smoked in-house and combined with yoghurt, homemade mayonnaise, dill, parsley, and lime for that added kick.

The abundance of mains will have you spoilt for choice; select from burgers and sandwiches, poultry, seafood, meat, pasta, rice and grills. George personally loves “The Chef ’s steaks, especially the teriyaki and the sirloin, (we seem to be getting a strong following for these) and close seconds are the Magret of Duck, Lamb Nicoise and the Hammour Machboos.” The delectable duck breast, marinated in orange and honey, is cooked to your liking and accompanied by roasted root vegetables and gratin potatoes with cherry flavoured duck jus. We also vouch for the expertly cooked Seared Fillet of Salmon, (the Chef ’s choice) encrusted with fennel and served on a bed of lightly spiced green lentils, with vegetables a la provencale, caper berry and tarragon butter. Savour the medley of textures and flavours, from the melt-in-your-mouth salmon and crunchy fennel to the smooth and fruity caper berry — sheer pleasure for your palate.

If you still have room for more, and we’re betting you don’t due to the generous Mei n Yu portion sizes, sample one of the scrumptious desserts; all the classic favourites are available, such as Chocolate Brownie, Vanilla Crème Brulee, Cheesecake and Apple & Rhubarb Crumble, as well as Date Pudding and Banana Fritters. Grape connoisseurs will appreciate the excellent selection on offer, with specially dedicated evenings, as will those favouring cocktails as their choice of beverage, like the house specialty created by Bar Manager, Alex Ali — the Appletini — an appealing and tangy concoction.

Executive Chef, Kavindra Ratnaweera, who has worked in almost every continent of the world, is enthusiastic about the ever-expanding menu and guests can look forward to sampling his creative delights, especially on Gourmet Evenings, with “Lots more specials,” promised — we can’t wait! We asked George what was in store for 2012. “We are working on various plans for the year ahead but until we finalise them we are unable to divulge details. You can also look out for Gourmet Dinners and Theme Nights besides our regular events. Executive Chef Kavi is a master and genius at his craft and we are starting a club where members will be invited to join the Chef ’s table to savour various dishes, which he will prepare accompanied by select beverages. No set menu, no advance notice, just join and be amazed with what he comes up with. Food preparation is a fine art but it can be so much fun enjoying it.”

We here at Ohlala! concur! Superb hosts, friendly staff, fantastic views, mouthwatering cuisine, good beverages, and an inviting, warm and relaxed ambience — what’s not to like!

CaptivatingCopenhagenOhlala! was genrously invited by Gulf Air to travel on their inaugural flight to Copenhagen, denmark. Katy Willis tells her story…

Page 81: Ohlala! Bahrain January 2012

“The Danish are friendly,

cosmopolitan and extremely

advanced in terms of democracy and

way of life.”

79

Page 82: Ohlala! Bahrain January 2012

There are many new destinations with Gulf Air recently, and when I heard about this new flight to Copenhagen, I was so excited to be able to visit — it was certainly an opportunity not to miss!

The flight is impressive; fast and comfortable, it exceeded my expectations. Friendly and helpful, the cabin crew offer hints and tips for the destination, whilst making sure they are providing an excellent service on board. The Sky Chef prepares your dish of choice from a varied menu and recommends the best beverages to accompany the meal. After you have eaten a delicious meal, you can watch your favourite TV show, or a new movie with a portable hand held console, which is rather unique as it leaves you free to sit; or lie back and relax, so that you feel refreshed on arrival.

Visiting a Scandinavian country was new to me; I was reminded of my studies — of one of my favourite Shakespeare plays — Hamlet. The fact that Shakespeare used Elsinore (Kronberg castle built in 1500s and now a UNESCO World heritage site situated in Northern Denmark) and aristocratic names for Hamlet’s friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, could suggest that he had researched the country well. Rumour has it, as my tour guides, Soren and Mikkel relayed to me, that Shakespeare could have been part of a touring group of English travellers documented to have been in Denmark in the late sixteenth century.

The Danish are friendly, cosmopolitan and extremely advanced in terms of democracy and way of life. My Grandmother was engaged to a Dane in the mid 1930s. Apparently she visited Copenhagen as he took her to see his homeland and meet his parents and family prior to their impending marriage. She brought back gifts of silver and amber and a Viking styled necklace, which my Mother still has and you can buy them today.

One striking thing that you notice when first arriving in Copenhagen is the beautifully warm coloured, quaint buildings, which have lots of windows and the corners of the buildings are cut off so they don’t have sharp edges. The story goes that after the British invaded Copenhagen and the Danes put up their white flags in defeat, Lord Nelson famously looked into his telescope with his blind eye and proclaimed, “I cannot see them surrendering, march ahead!” After the English finally retreated, the city was rebuilt, and in order to avoid any delays from fire and ambulance vehicles, the architects are famed to have designed the buildings without corners to make it easier to get around the streets.

The easiest way to travel around the city is to walk as everything is very close and compact. Of course, the city boasts a high number of bicycles, around 2.4 per capita to be precise, so with a population of 1.1 million that’s a whole lot of cycling, which contributes to the city being one of the most environmentally friendly places on earth. There is also a metro and tour buses, which you can hop on and off as many times as you wish with the Copenhagen travel card. If you enjoy architecture and old cobbled streets, peering into nooks and crannies and old curious shops, then walking is the best method of sightseeing.

If you are familiar with design or architecture, you will be aware of the Danish philosophies of making design for life; integrating ecological, ethical methodologies and aesthetics into everything they do. It is one of the most ecologically conscious cities in the world.

Although the autumn weather is unpredictable with rain showers, it is indeed a great time to visit as the city is preparing for Halloween and there are pumpkins everywhere, especially at Tivoli, Europe’s oldest amusement park dating from 1843. With many attractions that have grown over the years, it is now filled with gardens, fairground rides, an aquarium, a Chinese puppet theatre and a concert stage; as well as numerous restaurants and a hotel. One famous hotel, Nimb, boasts a Michelin star restaurant with an exquisite menu and is well worth a visit. I had smoked salmon fillet with horseradish mousse and watercress, followed by prime steak with Danish new potatoes and beetroot — delicious.

If you want to gaze at the Rosenberg castle artefacts, including the Crown Jewels and various other museum pieces, the castle is an excellent way to start your visit learning about the Kingdom’s history and the tales of the lavish Royalty’s lifestyles over the centuries.

Of course no trip to Copenhagen would be complete without a canal boat trip down the Nyhavn part of town, passing the famous fairy-tale author, Hans Christian Andersen’s two residencies, and the so called “good” and “naughty” side of the canal. The “naughty side” now bustling with people in the many restaurants and bars is a place where tourists and Danish people like to mingle and enjoy an evening out. You will be taken though the harbour and out a short distance to see the Little Mermaid;

a famous statue by sculptor Edvard Eriksen unveiled in 1913, which was specially commissioned to honour the story by Hans Christian Andersen. The statue was recently on loan to the Chinese for a year and the residents found that they really missed not having her around, so when she was returned to her rightful place last year, the Danes felt like they had gotten their girl back!

You could easily spend a lot of time in Copenhagen as well as other areas around Denmark. Perhaps visit the city of Malmo in Sweden by train on the newly built bridge, which is just a 25 minutes ride away. I would recommend a visit in the spring when the air is still very fresh but there are new buds on the trees and an air of anticipation. However, the town is alive with vibrancy all year round as there is so much to do, with concerts, theatre, ballet, opera, galleries, museums and much, much more. The ease of travel, friendly people and amazing design makes Copenhagen a “must visit” destination. I just can’t wait until I get the opportunity to go again!

merceDes Benz c 250 coupe BlueeFFiciencYAt first glance the 2012 Mercedes Benz C 250 Coupe has a stylish, sporty and elegant exterior. It also combines the high levels of design, advanced engineering and safety features expected of a Mercedes Benz.

Once you enter the car you will be greeted with high quality interiors. The well-cushioned seats have a very sporty feel and you will feel nicely cocooned when tackling the twists and turns of the roads. The dashboard has a tasteful layout with a visually interesting design, which also houses a high-resolution display screen; the system is very easy to operate with the console-mounted controller. The two rear seats are spacious enough to accommodate two adults comfortably, and should you have small children child car seat attachment points are available.

Among the many safety systems the C 250 comes standard with stability and traction controls, an antilock braking system, several airbags, pedestrian protection system and crash-resistant head restraints.

The drive is terrific as the car is beautifully agile and responsive with excellent road grip. Powered by a 1.8-litre turbo-charged direct injection four-cylinder engine, the C 250 Coupe boasts precise steering and handling that enables drivers to enjoy themselves regardless of road conditions. Its stability at high speeds is simply exemplary. There are three different driving modes: Economic, Sport and Manual, and switching between the three is very convenient with a press of a button.

The engine might not be the biggest rumbler out there, but it produces 201 horse-powers and goes from 0-100 kilometres per hour in a respectable 7.2 seconds. If you are after more power (or want your husband to steal your car!), opt for the C 350, which comes with a V6; or for the C 63 AMG with V8, both of which are members of the beautiful C-Class Coupe family.

All in all, the C 250 harmonises style, practicality and driveability in a lovely package — another German engineering marvel.

Horoscope

December 22 – January 19

January Happy Birthday Ms Capricorn2012 is likely to be the year of big expenses for many Capricorns. Still, you should not see this as a negative because everything you buy will be well within your means and will come about as a consequence of an increase in your income, following on from a promotion or change of job in the early part of the year. July could you see you hosting family after a disaster in the home sees them staying with you for a while and this is going to put a bit of a strain on relations. March and October will both prove to be excellent months for you in terms of romance and a lady in a yellow dress could prove instrumental in the way your love life unfolds.

capricorn — at a glanceCapricorns are practical and prudent, ambitious and disciplined. They are also a patient sign with a good sense of humour. Always reliable and professional to the last, Capricorns are a constant sign in any moment of panic. On the negative side, they can often be moody, pessimistic, miserly with money and fatalistic. Stay well clear if they are having a bad day.

aQuarius (January 20 – February 18)There seems to be plenty of romance in the air this year for your sign, and those of you who have been waiting on a lover will be pleased at how the first few months of the year unfold. Cupid’s arrow is set to bring joy and happiness to you in the early part of 2012 and this is going to renew your overall confidence in the world

around you and impact on other areas of your life. Your career path is going to unfold in a more favourable fashion and the chance to increase your income and also improve your standing will both present themselves to you. 2011 may not have been kind to your heart, but fortunately that is all going to change in a big way, and by December it will be like the bad elements of your past never existed.

taurus (april 20 – may 20)Hard work brings about its own rewards and you will have much to benefit your position this year, with work prospects set to flourish and your creative side rewarded beyond anything you may have imagined. Romantically, your heart may

suffer a dip in September, but overall 2012 will also prove to be another good year in matters of love. December will see you feeling nostalgic as loved ones part for distant shores but you should look upon this as a positive because suddenly you will be provided with the chance to spread your own wings. April, June and October bring the most rewards but February could initially be a struggle when it comes to your health.

pisces (February 19 – march 19)Travel and family are going to be two features of your life for 2012 and they both promise positive outcomes. Those of you thinking about having a family, or even adding to your group, will get good news sooner than you expected, whilst

anyone thinking about bringing parents under their roofs will enjoy an unexpected boost in early April. Finances may not be at their best for you this year, and it could be a tight squeeze to see yourself emerge from the first part of the year with a balanced bank account. However, don’t make any rash purchases and tighten those purse strings, and you may just make it onto a more even keel for the second part of the year.

aries (march 20 – april 19)The New Year promises great things for you, with particular emphasis placed on finance and business. 2012 will see you elevate your career, offering both travel opportunities and financial rewards. There’s also going to be the chance to

purchase a property at great discount, so long as you are prepared to put in the work to do it up because it won’t be in the best of states when you discover it. Look beyond the exterior and use your imagination to visualise what could be. Your best months will be March, April and November but overall you can expect positive things over the next 12 months.

Gemini (may 21 – June 20)There is little doubt that you are going to be fired up and ready to take on all challenges in 2012, which is just as well because the year may open up with a bit of a fight for you. Not the best introduction to 2012 but you’re certainly going to be focused from the start as a consequence. On

a more positive note, there will be a lot to think about where family are concerned and you may need to reshuffle both the home and your weekly agenda to accommodate these changes. January and July are going to be significant when it comes to financial matters, whilst September will see you taking a long overdue break to foreign shores, possibly with romantic overtones.

cancer (June 21 – July 22)Health issues will be the chief matter for you to deal with this year and it may be the middle of 2012 — between May and August — when you are at your most vulnerable. Because a great number of you will not be burdened by financial

or work concerns, thanks to sensible planning in 2011, health concerns will be your biggest hurdle. One caveat to this could come in the form of a young female relative who could make a request for money around March, and whilst you may oblige, you could find her back wanting more in September, so perhaps understanding her entire demands before you sign over any money would be a wiser thing to do.

leo (July 23 – august 22)Your world is set to be a very different place in 2012, with a great number of changes likely to occur from the middle of March onwards. How prepared you are for this depends chiefly upon whether you are conducive to new experiences. Generally, you are a sign that adapts well to

fresh challenges so it shouldn’t be an issue for most. Those of you who may be a little more hesitant need to develop greater flexibility and embrace the opportunities out there. May will be a key month for you, and if you get all your tasks for the year correctly lined up, then you can look forward to a very productive final phase of the month. On the relationship front, watch your back with a rival for a partner.

VirGo (august 23 — september 22)Soul searching will be something you are engaged quite a lot in over the first few months of 2011 as the reality of your future becomes more apparent. It might seem initially daunting, but in the long run you will no doubt reap the rewards and by the

end of the year, not only will you be a very different person, you’ll also find yourself in a very different place to the one you start the year in. On a different note, a male dressed in blue will make his way into your life around the third bringing a smile to your face, but be careful not to trust everything he says until you have properly analysed the situation. Finally, your stand out month is September in matter of finance.

saGittarius (nov 22 – Dec 21)Rich is the person whose greatest asset is the love and friendship of others and this year you will see that sentiment demonstrated in the most profound fashion. Never will this appear more evident than in February. You may also find yourself hampered by financial restraints in

the first part of the year and this isn’t going to help your mood at all. However, friends and relatives will surprise you by rallying together and assisting you back onto the road to recovery. Reflection will later show you just how well you are loved and to what extent you should learn to appreciate it more. Good luck will come your way in May when the turnaround in your life begins, but ensure you show your gratitude otherwise December could be a colder affair than you’re used to!

scorpio (october 23 – november 21)For Scorpio the year is likely to pan out with favourable results, the early part seeing you drawn towards the affections of a Taurean you first met through business late in 2011. This person may not even be in the same country as you but so strong was your initial connection that

you are both likely to use any excuse to try being together. The latter part will see you focusing on the progression of your career from July onwards and the opportunity to work overseas may coincidentally tie in nicely with your romantic aspirations so good news all round. The only note of caution could relate to finances which may be stretched for much of the next 12 months so mind those pennies wisely.

liBra (september 23 – october 22)Look long and hard at the progress of your rivals over the coming months because you could find yourself the victim of an initial confrontation in the workplace as alliances are formed and people you thought were friends turn out to be anything

but that. You have made one particular person close to you come to seriously resent your position and jealousy is leading to gossip and a clash of personalities as things reach a head in September. On a more positive front, a new relationship first formed in June will strengthen over the summer, and by December you could be thinking seriously about taking it to the next level.

Hi. As I write this, we’re still in 2011, but by the time you grace yourself upon this monthly dose of reading pleasure, it’ll be a cool 2012. So [as I prematurely and momentarily

celebrate] happy New Year friends! Blessings, prosperity, good stuff, to the fullest, may it be beautiful, plentiful… all that.

As you may recall this time last month I was in Paris. Weddings and so. Much fun. Then there was London. Meetings upon work upon family duties upon good times included Hip Hop Shakespeare Company, whose inspiring projects and rapid growth continues to amaze. A tour of the Louis Vuitton "apartment" and news of exciting collaborations in 2012, the launch of Taio Cruz's new watch collection and MTV's Staying Alive affair, which raised an impressive 64,000 GBP in aid of HIV/Aids research. My regular "spot", Mau Mau's on Portabello road, was as pleasant as it’s always been. Still in love with Makan. Completely off Nando's now (I know, shocking). Camden food places, as in pretty much all of them, still great. An interview and workshop exercise with Loved & Gifted, as one of their newly appointed ambassadors. The UK based organisation is basically focused on empowering young people through the arts and positive imagery — quite the honour.

Following that was Bahrain, and a very successful Jewellery Arabia exhibition. I was completely and utterly besotted with everything David Webb. Not quite sure whether his recent inspirations derive from the mother continent’s tribal decadence or a dancehall rave in Dalston. Either way, blown away.

Now, I’m in Kuwait, and can we just have a moment on how inspiring the fashion is here? Holy. Moly. Shopping districts and eateries are openly entertaining runway shows; a radiant view of unabashed experimentation. Unabashed is the key word here. Just unafraid to try. Fearless — and fierce with it. Eloquent and crazy at the exact same time. Forward yet traditionally respectful. Tastefully eccentric. Unique vintage odes merged with a “yes I took it there” ghetto fabulousness! No really. I saw that. Furthermore, never, not once, did I witness a vibrant mix of colours done badly. A pause for applause, if you will.

Much talk around Kuwait's new Missoni Hotel (which opened back in May of this year) led us to

making it our chosen place of residence. It was cute, from start to finish, and if you’re a Missoni lover then you’ll enjoy drenching yourself in absolutely everything. Indeed, the hotel literally dripped in the brand’s trademark psychedelic colours, patterns and floral prints.

The mission: Pretty Little Things, a pop-up mall of sorts. Gorgeous boutiques selling the cutest of all sorts to a savvy crowd of Kuwait’s social media gurus, society ladies, cool dudes and yummy mummies over three days of retail happiness. Green Bar was the only participating vendor from abroad, and well, as expected, everyone went a little crazy over the brand’s all natural beauty products. It’s not every day you come across a line of skin care made strictly for the purpose of skin caring — no crap included. Just like Cleopatra did.

One more Gulf state related thing; I detest what is franchised, mass-produced and horribly over-exposed, particularly when it comes to eating. So, Kuwait’s concepts in local dining wasn’t just a breath of fresh air, it was an ongoing breeze of deliciousness. Brilliant ideas in fresh taste bud joy thanks to Kuwaiti chefs… I love that. Applause-ing you. Again.
