New Year New You

Editor-in-ChiefKirsty Edwards-Harris

elcome to 2012!At the beginning of a new year, it

is customary to set yourself goals and make resolutions for the coming months

ahead. We can all strive to be the best we can be, to be more compassionate towards others, to

devote ourselves to charitable causes, to let our loved ones know that we care, to live our lives with passion and integrity, to make each day count and live in the moment. This month we feature inspirational role models who have committed themselves to taking on life’s challenges and reaching out to those in need. In The Cause we present a story about Doctors from the Gulf who opened their eyes to the desperate plight of Somali refugees and went to their aid. We also sit down with Dr Amal Mohammed Al-Malki, a scholar and humanist whose concern for, and interest in, the welfare of others is primary.

A popular goal this time of year is to get fit, tone up and lose weight, especially when looking at the ever-increasing numbers staring up at us from the scales after too much festive indulgence! Turn to our Wellbeing article where we offer top tips from experts in the field on how to banish the bulge. To assist you further with your ambitions, check out our Gadget Girl page, which showcases techy fitness items to keep you on track. Getting hot and sweaty is no excuse for not looking your best; browse our Fashion pages for styling tips on looking hot while working out.

Speaking of fashion, we’ve got your monthly, glossy fix of celebrity trends as well as stunning luxury items on the Wish List, and tips and tricks on what to wear for the New Year. We also chat with Haute Couturier, Ali Beydoun, to discover more about his remarkable talent. The Ohlala! Signature Fashion Shoot is not-to-be-missed, as we feature high-end, funky looks out and about town in Doha to inspire you to kick-start your wardrobe. In Beauty we share with you secrets of the stars, gorgeous new products and exclusive winter hair care tips from Miriam Quevedo.

Happy New Year! Farewell 2011… and what an eventful year it was. I blinked and it shot past in a blur (although that could just be me ageing faster

each year!) December was as busy as it should be. Malls were festooned with festive shoppers, and as the sound of Jingle Bells rang throughout Carrefour, it made me more than desperate to pull a cracker. Christmas trees aplenty were lighting up all over Doha and The Ritz-Carlton was particularly keen — not even waiting until December to fire up its glittering, bedecked and bauble-splendid outdoor dazzler. A handful of hotel staff donned vibrant Santa coats while kick starting the festive cheer with a tear-jerking medley of carols. The crowd cheered when that ‘special’ man in the red suit and white beard made an early appearance. So began the season of goodwill.

Speaking of goodwill, I’m always appreciative of anyone who invites me to an event involving food. So I was grateful to visit the newly opened Chi’ZEN Chinese Restaurant and Lounge at Oryx Rotana for a lunch tasting. With its glossy red and black interiors and a feast of all time Chinese favourites, I had a thoroughly flavourful time. It’s a recommended little hot-spot if you’re in the mood for a taste of the Orient.

Doha is a hot-spot itself these days with all things legendary and celeb’. We had our fill of red carpet hotties just recently at the film festival then red-hot footballers came to town last month. Then I got the call to go meet a jazz legend. All in a day’s work! So off I went to Katara to chat to Wynton Marsalis, a big shot trumpeter and seriously talented musician from New Orleans, who also happens to be a fabulously charming man. Check out our Art & Culture feature for the lowdown on Mr M; I confess I blushed like a schoolgirl every time I asked him a question.

It’s not every day I’m offered the keys to a

Porsche, but when Porsche Centre Doha announced a Media Test Run of Porsche models at Grand Hyatt, who am I to refuse? Except refuse I did (sob!) having previously engaged myself elsewhere. However, my colleague Victoria was only too ready and waiting to snatch the keys out of my hand… she’s talked of nothing but Boxsters and Carreras ever since and I’m still sulking.

I did manage to top off the month on a high note though, when I attended the grand opening of Katara’s amphitheatre; a gala evening of music and song, and again, celebrities coming out of the woodwork. Jeremy Irons, Oscar winner no less; Vangelis, composer extraordinaire and many more names to drop. Sitting on an amphitheatre seat for three hours takes some getting used to I admit, but the atmosphere was amazing. I certainly recommend a visit, although you might want to take a cushion.

By the way, a two-hour taxi ride from Villaggio to West Bay the night before National Day (what possessed me?) made me realise Qataris really know how to travel atop a Land Cruiser! Until next time . . .

All hail the Amphitheatre!

Feather Fashion

From celebs on the red carpet to runway shows, the fashion world is going a-flutter with feathers! While this dream-like trend may not be practical to wear on a daily basis, you can incorporate it into your wardrobe and dress up your Autumn/Winter neutrals. Ohlala! shows you how to get the look.

hoW To WeAR iTFeathers have a fascinating flirtatious appeal to them. Often associated with aristocrats and high society, feathers can inject glamour into clothes that are either straightforward or masculine. Wearing a delicate top tipped with feathers around the neckline will offset masculine, high-waist trousers. When wearing a full on cluster of feathers, avoid looking bird-like by sticking to small, fine feathers and make sure to keep accessories minimal or neutral in colour.

DressesFeather dresses are best left to formal or evening events. As the feather look is so dramatic, going for classic black is the safest option. Choose corseted dresses with jewel beading for a magical, enchanting look. For all you fearless fashionistas out there, try pieces that embrace bright, colourful feathers. You’ll be sure to make a statement.

AccessoriesHandbags and clutches have some of the most visible and eye-catching details and will have a great impact on your outfit. Hair accessories top your look with cute and youthful detail. Chic headbands echo the popular bohemian trend. Jewellery is all about flashing your style sense. Earrings offer bohemian-style looks that are totally in this season. For a unique and dramatic effect, try the variety that comes in bright, funky colours. Choose big feather earrings to help emphasise your cheekbones and compliment your hairstyle.

Page 30: Ohlala! Qatar January 2012

shoesWant to add instant appeal to your attire? Work in a pair of feathered heels. These stunning shoes are sure to steal the show. For a low-profile look, opt for a pair of feathered sandals. Make sure to keep the rest of the outfit simple to allow your feathered feet to be the focal point.

PRiNTsThe easiest way to break into this trend without the extravagance is by selecting clothing that has feather prints or patterns. These pieces adopt a more colourful and versatile style due to the combination of the simple tailoring with the complex patterns.

New looksOhlala! gets you up-to-date with the latest designers, trends and style news from the fashion world.

Many of the clothing and accessories we wear in 2012 will be influenced by the most

recent season, Autumn/Winter 2011. We feature our favourite styles and fashionable pieces, which will have an impact on next season’s fashion trends.

sheeR MAxi sKiRTIf you’re looking to defy the need for heavy winter fabrics this season, then try the sheer maxi skirt for 2012. This wispy, romantic look represents a fresh take on last season’s maxi skirt trend. Wear this flowing skirt with shorts or a slip underneath for modesty. Plenty of layering comes highly recommended when creating this trend for winter. Adding a blazer, chunky knitwear, leather jacket or fur vest are all great options.

BLoCK heeLsChunky yet sturdy, these substantial heels are great for women who never dare to venture out in stilettos. The comfort of these square-heeled shoes makes up for their awkward appearance. The sandal variety is a great choice to get you through the entire year. They can be worn with tights or schoolgirl socks for now and will be perfectly Boho-chic come spring.

GLADsToNe BAGThe Gladstone bag, or doctor’s bag, was once a working man’s asset, but today has become a woman’s arm-luxury. Due to its boxy shape, be mindful of what you team it with. It works well with cigarette pants and a blazer, or a midi-length shift dress or pencil skirt. Functional, elegant and back in our sights for 2012, this bag is an accessory worth investing in.

CoLLAR NeCKLACesCollar necklaces are the hottest jewellery trend to take with you into 2012. Their unique design makes them the perfect statement piece, one that completes the whole look. Add a touch of feminine glamour to a simple shirt by popping a statement necklace under the collar. These statement accessories look best when paired with monochrome or minimalistic outfits, but if you are one of those who favour the bolder look, match them with colours, stripes or prints for a dramatic ensemble.

overty, drought and epidemics such as HIV are just a few of the horrific

challenges facing Somalia today. With a current population of just over 9.5 million

(according to The World Bank statistics), the life expectancy stands at a shockingly low 50.6 years.

The infant mortality rate is also high at 108.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Living in appalling conditions with an unstable economic situation, approximately 43 percent of Somalia’s population live below the poverty line and have had to come to terms with living with scarcity on a permanent basis. A large majority of Somalians, however, take refuge in other countries in order to escape their own home’s life-threatening circumstances.

The AWAKeNiNGAt the end of 2011, Dr Mohammed Shahda decided to embark on a life-changing journey to Kenya to an area called Dadaab, which Dr Mohammed now refers to as “The Dark City”; a semi-arid town in the North Eastern Province. Here lies the largest refugee camp in the world, where more than 700,000 refugees are currently seeking food and shelter with an influx of 2000 refugees daily. A staggering 90 percent of these have fled from neighbouring Somalia due to civil war.

Having been convinced by human rights activist Fajer Mufeez, who had previously visited the camp, Dr Shahda, accompanied by Dr Mohammed D’Ayed joined the Alliance of International Doctors to represent medical help from Bahrain.

What they faced was an unimaginable and grueling two-week challenge that seemed to take them back in time; every facility or mode of transport seemed to be out-dated by several decades. Dr Shahda says, “It was like seeing the opposite face of the world.” Every single refugee in the camp lives without the basic necessities and after 5pm they endure complete darkness. “One moment, which stands out, was when I saw a man eating out of

a rubbish bin right in front of me — I was really affected by this, and it was only the beginning…”

MeDiCAL heLPBoth Dr Shahda and Dr D’Ayed worked together in the medical camp; a simple set up with few resources. Due to the lack of clinical aid, the doctors decided to establish the clinic before they left where doctors are now able to visit and continue their important help. Coordinated by a group of youth and human rights activists, the clinic is supported through the donations made by fellow Bahrainis and since its establishment a number of doctors have travelled to Dadaab to support the refugees through their sufferings.

LessoNs LeARNT“The experience really helped me to appreciate the simple necessities that we have in life, which Somalians would consider luxuries, such as not having to walk hundreds of miles for food and water. What is most devastating is that they have such dark expectations of the future; they don’t know if they are going to even last the night, let alone the days ahead. My trip made me realise that the world is a greedy and selfish place, perhaps more so now than ever before,” Dr Shahda comments. Since his return to the island, he has been putting the story together about his experiences during the trip. He is hoping that sharing this story will raise awareness across the Gulf.

hoW YoU CAN heLP?Dr Shahda and the AID foundation are desperate to encourage others to follow in their footsteps and make a worthwhile trip like theirs. In the future they hope to visit other areas, where refugees face the same struggles.

If you are interested in helping, no matter how large or small, please email [email protected] to find out how you can become involved in this very worthwhile and fundamental organisation.

“What is most devastating is that the refugees have such dark expectations of the future; they don’t know if they are going to even last the night, let alone the days ahead.”

The TaleWhat does Doha and New York City have in common? Jazz of course! it’s not every week a jazz legend visits Doha and plays a mesmerising rendition of ‘Tom Cat Blues’ to a small gathering of people inside a room at Katara Cultural Village. Upon hearing that trumpet swing and dance, those same people became instant jazz lovers, if they weren’t already… they also became fans of Wynton Marsalis, the legendary and charming jazz man who came to town and took the time to chat with Judith Jones.

celebrate it, we love it, we share it,”

states world renowned jazz musician Wynton

Marsalis, trumpeter, composer, bandleader, advocate for the arts

and educator, Artistic Director of Jazz at the Lincoln Centre, New York; winner of nine GRAMMY awards and the first jazz musician in history to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music. Why did he come to Qatar? Well Omar AlFardan, one of Qatar’s prominent VIPs, President of Alfardan Holdings and owner of the ‘soon to be open’ luxury St Regis Resort, is an avid jazz fan, and from there, the story unfolds…

Wynton Marsalis was born in New Orleans, 1961. The second of six sons he followed his father’s love and talent for music; at age eight he was performing traditional New Orleans’s sounds in a church band; by age 12 he took to seriously studying the trumpet. In 1979 Wynton’s talent took him to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York to study classical trumpet and from then on he was awarded the opportunity to pursue his true passion for jazz music. The years following saw him perform with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughan and countless others.

Wynton developed his talent as a top-notch band leader and composer of major works. He also co-founded a jazz programme at the Lincoln Centre in New York, which propelled the recognition of jazz to the masses, transforming the jazz department into a full blown cultural institution. The world renowned Jazz at Lincoln Centre (JALC) is a non-profit organisation based in Manhattan. Along with the JALC Orchestra, a vast array of international guest artists produce a year round schedule of high-class performances, education and broadcast events for a wide audience. Now St Regis Resorts and JALC have collaborated, resulting in the first ever Jazz at Lincoln Centre venue outside of New York, which just happens to be at St Regis Resort, Qatar!

It’s evident that Mr Alfardan and Mr Marsalis share a strong common bond in their passion for jazz, particularly the music of the inimitable Louis Armstrong. “Jazz is an art form which has inspired people around the world to dream of better lives, and as Qatar continues progress to becoming a global hub for culture and the arts, it is only fitting that we should have a world-class centre for music,” explains Mr Alfardan.

Wynton Marsalis’ first impression of Qatar is positive; he’s delighted about the opening of JALC Doha, claiming he hopes to make frequent visits and possibly perform in the future. He emphasises the fact that jazz has no boundaries when it comes to crossing cultural borders. When asked about his success and what motivates him

Page 38: Ohlala! Qatar January 2012

Culture

36 Ohlala! I January 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Marsalis says, “When I’m working with children and young people and I see their enthusiasm, that’s the most rewarding aspect for me.” He believes that, “Integrity is the most important quality of all to possess. Success is not down to passion or how much you practice each day, but about being honest with yourself about what you believe in.” Although Marsalis admits that if he doesn’t practice the trumpet for a couple of days his lips hurt; he finds playing jazz a luxury, “It’s extremely meditative.”

In order to replicate the mood of the original JALC, the Doha club will bear the same format but with flexibility to Qatar’s needs. The centre of Manhattan is home to the iconic St Regis Hotel. Since its opening over a century ago, it has played host to the finest jazz musicians in history, with the likes of Count Basie and Duke Ellington gracing its rooftop ballroom. The same high-calibre musicians will play at St Regis Doha. Mr Alfardan says, “It’s my wish that we will also be able to fuel and inspire people in Qatar to understand jazz, and that one day, a young person from this nation will share the stage with our guest of honour.”

With her wealth of academic qualifications and achievements, it need not be emphasised that Dr Amal Mohammed Al-Malki is a scholar. Although first and foremost, Dr Al-Malki is a humanist. her concern for and interest in the welfare of others is primary, which is evident throughout her presence as Assistant Teaching Professor of english at Carnegie Mellon University, as Judith Jones finds out.

As the only Qatari professor at Education City, Dr Amal Al-Malki

is pioneering the way for future Qatari academics, male and female,

to play a key role in contributing to and promoting the development

of education for Qatar’s youth. A self-confessed non-conformist and free thinker, Dr Al-Malki encourages her students to voice their opinions and express their views through creative and technical writing, believing that the voice of reason and cultural tolerance can prevail beyond the ‘clash of civilization’.

Dr Al-Malki’s research into cross cultural negotiation and media representations of Arab women, plus her numerous works of academic and creative writing, provide a voice which enhances the fundamental need to combine language and cultural differences in order to create a tolerance between each and every one of us. Borne from over three years of research Arab Women in Arab News: Old Stereotypes and New Media is the title of Dr Al-Malki’s latest publication due out in March 2012. “It’s an important book which exposes the persistent stereotypes about Arab women and tries to set the record straight,” explains Dr Al-Malki.

Did you enjoy a pastime from an early age that links with your chosen profession?Amal Al-Malki. My first hobby was reading. I was fortunate to have a library at home, and by the age of 10 years, I could appreciate the written word and so began to write poetry and short stories.

What initially inspired you to follow your chosen career path?A.M. I had no great plan to follow. My life has written itself. My parents, who are visionaries, awarded me the best educational options. My father saw my potential and has always had faith in me. It was inevitable that I would study for a Master’s Degree, however, in the late 90s there were no relevant facilities available to me in Qatar, so I studied in London and gained a Master’s Degree in English – Arabic Applied Linguistics and Translation. I have always possessed a mind of my own. From an early age I was labelled as ‘rebellious’ because I was a non-conformist; a free thinker. In that sense I am not a typical Qatari as my parents originate from two cultures; my mother is Lebanese and my father is Qatari, therefore, I am a hybrid. In my teens I frequently felt like an outsider, whilst at the same time I embraced being different. I would rather be a pioneer than a follower.

What experiences from living and studying overseas have contributed to your overall outlook regarding Arabic & Western values?A.M. Prior to studying overseas I had travelled extensively with my parents, which in turn, broadened my mind. They encouraged me to speak two languages. Living abroad I was exposed to many kinds of people and their opinions. I found myself being stereotyped which upset me. I don’t subscribe to the ‘clash of civilization’ theory. Such experiences living overseas influenced my decision to study for a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and develop my interest in post-colonial literature.

You encourage your students to speak freely and voice their opinions. Were you encouraged to do the same by your family and teachers?A.M. I was brought up in a democratic household where my family encouraged my siblings and I to vote on everyday issues such as naming our pets, where to go on holidays and so forth. I

feel privileged to have been allowed that opportunity. At school, critical thinking was not promoted or encouraged. Fortunately that has now changed.

Do you regard yourself as a ‘staunch’ feminist’?A.M. The term ‘feminist’ means different things to different people. I am a female advocate and I believe in women’s rights, equal citizenship and human rights. There are adapted forms of feminism such as Islamic feminism found within the Holy Qur’an which encourages fundamental human rights. Some people judge feminism on what they alone believe it to be. Often negative opinions are borne from archaic, out of date customs which are in turn discriminating. I don’t like being labelled just because of certain beliefs I may have. What does a typical day at university involve?A.M. My work is my life and it takes up a large portion of my time. My role, aside from teaching, involves mentoring my students and attending student clubs and various meetings. I am also a consultant concerning government entities. I listen to each of my students and I’m here to help whenever I can. I also ask for help when I need it. With my students I don’t assume full authority and I appreciate the fact they relate to me and to my identity. I am an advocate for youth and for women. They see me

as a role model and I can relate to them. You have to earn people’s respect.

As the only Qatari professor at Education City what rewards and pressures does that role provide?A.M. The rewards are plenty; I am part of a positive process where my students may become future leaders. I enjoy being at the hub of opportunity and collaborating with an international institution where I’m experiencing history in the making. My

reward is being part of that process. The downside is that certain people see me as a representative of all Qatari women, whereas I don’t see myself as a spokesperson for all Qataris.

Can you envisage an influx of female Qatari professors in the near future? Why are there so few now?A.M. Yes I think there will be more opportunities in the future for female professors. The Campus follows certain employment rules whereby hiring local people is not generally within their scope. Initially, the name Carnegie Mellon was not familiar to me. When I applied I was told I was over qualified. However, I was informed that one way I could be considered was by going to teach at Pittsburgh University; I needed to prove myself capable of fitting in. This was a challenge and it took some time to get accustomed to the situation but it proved to be successful.

Have you experienced any gender issues from male counterparts regarding your achievements?A.M. I haven’t experienced discrimination based on gender, however, on extremely rare occasions, I have undergone acts of prejudice, directed towards me — not just as a woman — but as a Qatari. Unfortunately, there is a stereotypical view of Qataris as being wealthy and lazy. Such prejudice has been shown by females as well as males. In the rare instance this has happened, it has been from less cultured individuals and all I can do in such circumstances is attempt to correct and educate them.

What personal qualities do you feel you possess which enable you to inspire and nurture your students?A.M. I am tolerant and flexible and I believe in change. Nothing should be static. I never try to take the upper hand. I believe in the act of practicing what you preach.

Having contributed to numerous academic journals while demonstrating a passion for creative writing and communicating through the blogosphere, do you ever read fiction novels as a way of escapism? A.M. I love reading novels but not as a way of escapism. On the contrary, I learn from them. Novels open windows where I can live through other people’s experiences and be sympathetic to their emotions and feelings. I teach story writing in my literature courses and novels are a way of creating a variety of backgrounds and breaking down cultural barriers so we can envision we are all the same. My favourite book is always the one I have just read. Two of my favourite authors are Adhaf Soueif and Fadia Faqir; they are Arabs who write in English and are an example of the term ‘Writers in Translation’, whereby authors who are non-English natives write in English.

In what ways do you relax to switch off from work?A.M. I love going to the beach but always with a book of course!

What are your future aspirations?A.M. Many… in the making. I always aspire to be the best human I can be.

Do you have a specific motto you adhere to?A.M. The Prophet’s saying: “He who is modest and humble will be elevated by God.” And Ghandi’s: “Be the change you want to be in the world.”

One of the most iconic faces of modern times, Twiggy continues to capture the public imagination. With the release of her latest album, Romantically Yours, Twiggy talks to Ben Whittaker about her music, life and what

still motivates her after so many years in the public eye.

Twiggy Makes HerselfRomantically Yours

he changing tastes and demands of audiences and

the entertainment industry seem to have left Twiggy untouched. Since

she first hit the headlines as a teenager in the mid-sixties, Twiggy has sashayed from

one success to another, continually reinventing herself and always ahead of the game.

Vogue cover girl, globally successful model, movie star, accomplished performer, Broadway and theatre star, and the face of the M&S brand, she has touched on almost every aspect of entertainment, gaining in stature every inch of the way.

As her new album — her first in over a decade — Romantically Yours hits the stores, we meet to talk about this release.

“It all came about the way many things in this industry develop; by accident. It certainly wasn’t meticulously planned,” she smiles. “I had been talking in a fairly relaxed way about doing something in the studio and then EMI approached me, keen to take up the idea. We decided to go with the theme of classic songs, songs that people from all generations might enjoy and I set about picking my favourites.

“Initially I chose 50! But eventually I managed to whittle it down to 12 tracks. My biggest requirement, aside from liking the songs, was that they were all romantic songs that other people could relate to, with timeless classics very much the focal point.”

The album gave Twiggy the chance to perform with her daughter, Carly on the Neil Young track Only Love Can Break Your Heart. “I thought it would be a memorable thing to do and when I suggested the idea to

Page 46: Ohlala! Qatar January 2012

Celebrity Scoop

Carly she said she would do it if she liked the song. Fortunately we found one we both loved!”

Twiggy started work on the album in the autumn of 2010 and the initial plan was to release it in time for Mother’s Day. “It was a great idea but I was so busy it meant that I couldn’t get everything done in time, so our next option was to make it a Christmas release here in the UK. It did give me more time to tweak the album and grow with it. I also wanted to do some filming for it.”

From fashion icon to international music artist seems quite a clever journey. “I’d like to say I was clever and can take credit for it myself but that wasn’t how it happened. I do think it is important to evolve and adapt but after five years in the fashion industry, going from an unknown Londoner to Vogue cover girl, it was thanks to the lovely Ken Russell that I made the transition from magazines to movies.

“It was totally his idea. He had me in mind for the lead in The Boyfriend and he sent me off to singing and dancing lessons. The studio was understandably nervous but Ken was not for turning and he surrounded me with some fabulously talented people, which helped my learning experience and the project got the greenlight.

“I owe him a great deal for his perseverance and he will be sorely missed. There are few visionaries like Ken left in the industry.”

The Boyfriend earned Twiggy two Golden Globe Awards that led to further film projects and also a TV show. She also released a number of albums and scored chart success with her single Here I Go Again.

However, having tasted critical and commercial success with acting and music, the early 80s saw her come to the attention of Broadway when she was enticed to America, to star in My One and Only.

“Film is one thing but the live experience was a whole new dimension and for me it was nerve-racking at first. We did an initial run in Boston, which was wonderful but the Broadway opening night is something I do not remember to this day because I was so nervous. But performing on stage in a hit musical is one of the greatest professional experiences of my life.”

Throughout her career Twiggy has enjoyed a very warm relationship with the US and from her first American Vogue front cover in 1967 to her business ventures today, it is a country she retains close links with. “I love America and the American people. They have always been very warm and generous to me as an artist and I have kept a very strong connection with the country. I have friends on both the East and West coasts — and a few in-between — and I’m back and forth to New York regularly. I think I am what’s known as a Nylon!

“I did a period as a judge on America’s Next Top Model and have a clothing business on the Home Shopping Network in America so it’s like a second home to me. Only the other week I got a call

from some friends in LA who told me they saw a 20-foot poster of me from the 70s on the side of a building and it made me smile.

“Of course, the fashion business was the industry that gave me my big break and without that, well, I wouldn’t be here talking to you,” she grins. Does that mean she considers herself less the Londoner and more cosmopolitan these days? “No, I’m a London girl at heart and I like nothing more than coming home from wherever I am and closing my door on the world and just relaxing with my husband.”

And how does someone like Twiggy unwind? “I like being a wife and mum — although my children are all grown up now — and I like doing normal things; cooking and sewing, and I have become absolutely obsessed with jigsaw puzzles. I also still keep up my tap dancing — it’s a fun alternative to the gym and helps keep me fit.

“I have a passion for animal welfare and support the cause of animals whenever I can as they don’t have a voice so they need

someone to speak up for them. Also, supporting the fight against breast cancer is high on my agenda and I am always happy to help in this cause where I can.”

The New Year sees little let up in her schedule, as Twiggy will be preparing for the big launch of Romantically Yours in the States. “It comes out around February 1 — just in time for Valentine’s Day — and my husband and I have our clothing business to keep an eye on.”

So, what advice does she have for anyone who is thinking of forging a career in music, film or fashion today? “It’s tough out there. The music industry has moved away from physical sales and down the route of digital, which certainly makes sense but it does take a little of the personality out of the experience. I

loved the whole feeling of buying and appreciating an album. “As for fashion, well fashion is meant to change and evolve so

I guess in answer to your question, if you are keen on pursuing a career in any of these fields be prepared to work hard and to expect the unexpected because really, nobody knows anything for sure.”

Of course I couldn’t close without mentioning those famous M&S adverts. “They were really fun to do and I think you can see that in the finished product. I got to meet and work with some wonderful people. We have some exciting new plans to work with M&S in the future.”

I came away from the interview impressed by Twiggy’s unassuming and generous nature. Here is an extraordinary woman unconcerned about celebrity for its own sake. Here is a woman who has achieved what she wanted through hard work but also always ready to acknowledge the part others have played in her success.

Now that is iconic.

From a detailed sketch, the exquisite designs of the award winning couturier, Ali Beydoun, are passionately transformed into sought after wearable works of art. It is entirely understandable why The Ministry of Tourism would elect Qatar’s resident haute couturier to design the collection of gowns for the esteemed Miss Arab World 2011 Pageant. It is an accolade that is testament to the achievements of a man who truly knows what women want. Judith Jones discovers what’s behind his remarkable talent.

“I design for every woman. Each one has her own character and charisma. It is too monotonous and boring to design for just one specific type of woman.”

pleasure of seeing,

t o u c h i n g and ultimately

wearing an Ali Beydoun gown, is a treat every woman should be awarded. Ali is a passionate designer with an infinite imagination portrayed beautifully in each and every one of his couture creations.

Of Lebanese origin, Ali’s passion for fashion began at age 11. Seeing the Lebanese diva ‘Sabah’ on TV one New Year’s Eve was a significant moment that triggered in him a desire to create beautiful designs. Inspired by all that glitters and sparkles, he began to embrace these elements into his sketches, and as he states, “That’s how the story began… “

Initially, he was encouraged by his classmates to pursue his desire to be a fashion designer. He enjoyed capturing their attention. “They would stand over me during classes and watch me sketch; amazed at my drawings they would constantly ask from where I found my ideas,” claims Ali. However, his Social Sciences teacher was not such a fan and complained, “Ali is making designs and patterns while I am trying to explain the lesson!”

Ali’s mother, elder sisters, other female relatives and friends were influential in how he developed his eye for style and colour; being surrounded by women allowed him the opportunity to observe their tastes and how women like to dress, which had a major impact on him.

A career in fashion design was certainly not mapped out though; Ali’s father had plans for his son to become either a surgeon or an engineer. Having already acquired a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Diploma for Agricultural Engineering from the American University in Beirut, it was Ali’s decision to risk moving to London and enter business school to complete his post graduate studies. However, his overwhelming desire to create swayed him towards the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art, where his remarkable talent for original design was recognised and he was duly accepted. At that time his inspiration came from Lebanese Designer, William Khoury, while later on he came to greatly admire the work of Valentino among others.

Forward to 2007 and Ali’s arrival in Qatar. His plan — “To establish myself as Qatar’s famous fashion designer. I wanted to move to a country where there were not many well-known designers. At this time there were no designers in Qatar doing catwalk fashion shows, fashion photography, none with a website or appearing in magazines and on the internet,” explains Ali. “I think that move began a handful of blessings that opened up many opportunities for me.”

When asked about the challenges of setting up his business in Qatar, Ali explains he first had to gain the trust of his clients. His style and technique of creating garments was a brand new entity and he had to convince Qatari ladies, who may have initially seen this form of design as bizarre. “I design for every woman. Each one has her own character and charisma. It is too monotonous and boring to design for just one specific type of woman,” says Ali.

Having proved himself as a talented couturier in Qatar, Ali enjoys an established client base, working from his couture house off Salwa Road. Walking into the villa is akin to peeking inside a jewellery box. Mannequins pose in fantasy gowns swathed in Swarovski crystals; a rail of colourful dresses gracefully display the hand-craftsmanship of beadwork and intricate embellishment that Ali and the talented ladies who help him have lovingly created. The time taken to produce a gown can be between two days to six months depending on the design.

Ali travels to Première Vision exhibition in Paris to preview the latest haute couture fabrics, while also sourcing fabrics and accessories from Italy and France. A catalogue supplied

by Swarovski crystals displays the latest trends in beadwork and gem technology and trips to fashion weeks in Paris, Rome, New York and London provide the latest haute couture trends.

‘Blooming Winter Rose’ is the charming name given to his latest collection, which embodies elements of blooming petals in each piece. Colours are feminine and sexy; ruby red, black diamond, nude and beige and a splash of gold and platinum. Silver and crystals add shine and sparkle to each piece.

When asked about plans to expand his business Ali explains, “I have already

started showing in Rome, Italy, during the Alta Moda Alta Roma fashion week, which hosts renowned international designers. Whilst there I received the Oriental Award for Young Fashion Designer from the Orient.” Despite having a solid reputation throughout the Gulf, obviously it’s the dream of every designer to achieve worldwide recognition and Ali aspires to gain attention in Paris and New York. “I would love to see Queens, Princesses and First Ladies wearing my designs.”

What’s ahead for Mr Beydoun? “The future looks so pure, so fresh and so young,” says Ali. “Like the onset of almond flowers blossoming at early spring: This would be a good inspiration for my Spring/Summer collection.”

When asked what his perception of ‘style’ is, Ali explains, “Style is all about personality; let it have its way out, let colours express your feelings, your mood and state of mind. Be honest in your choice and don’t just imitate or present yourself as a false copy or a ‘wannabe’. No matter what sort of problems may face you, confront them; be strong and believe in yourself. Make your dreams become reality by fighting hard to attain them. Life is beautiful — just have that beautiful mind.”

If you dye your hair, select colour-repairing shampoos and hair conditioners developed especially for treated hair. When you hair is strong and healthy it will retain the shade for longer whereas weak and dry hair will lose the colour much more rapidly. Use a serum to protect against unnecessary moisture loss.

Try to limit the use of hair appliances. Do not use them every time you wash your hair as hairdryers, flat irons and curling tongs cause the hair to become more porous which makes it difficult to maintain the colour. On occasions when you do dry it, apply a serum after washing and conditioning your hair before drying. This will help to protect against heat and moisture loss and give your hair a silky finish. Then put your head upside down and dry the underneath of the hair so that the heat doesn’t reach the outside hair shaft.

ew Year’s resolutions to ‘get fit’ usually

fizzle out before you can say, “A can of diet soda

please.” Quick fix diets and an occasional spurt on the treadmill

will not achieve long term results or a fitness level that you aspire to.

Craig explains, “The problem that many face is that you cannot out-train a bad diet. It only takes minutes, seconds even, for you to do a whole lot of damage to your nutritional plan, which will only result in that number going up on the scales as well as your dress size.”

toP FivE tiPS to BANiSh thE BuLGELarge compound MovementsWhen in the gym, use large compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, lunges, lateral pulldowns (strength training exercises) and the chest press. Using more muscles means burning more calories. This will help shift some of the unwanted fat you’ve acquired over the holidays.

Free-Weight / Bodyweight ExercisesIf you have the ability to perform free-weight or bodyweight exercises with the correct technique and with minimal risk of injury, then always choose these. These are more realistic to real life situations and will rely on you using more muscles than Fixed Path machines that you see in a lot of commercial gyms.

Super-Set and Non-competing Super-SetsNon-competing sets make the most sense. Performing two exercises one after the other with no rest is great (super-sets); performing two exercises one after the other with no rest, which have nothing to do with one another (non-competing) is even better! Try some form of leg exercise immediately followed by an upper body exercise. You’ll be out of breath and fatigued at the end of it, but you’ll notice the benefits immediately.

Nutrition, Nutrition, NutritionRevise your nutritional goals and habits and make any changes you need to. Limit your intake of complex carbohydrates unless it is straight after a good workout. Avoid the simple refined carbs’ like white bread, white pasta, sweets, cakes and starches; the body cannot process these and tends to store most of them as body fat.

Partner-upThere have been many studies, which have shown how powerful social support is when it comes to health and fitness. Team up with a friend or family member to give you that extra motivation (and push out of the door) the next time you’re talking yourself out of going to the gym. By choosing your partner carefully you are making yourself accountable, and when you do this, you dramatically increase your chances of success.

January is the month to counteract the splurge that the festive season bestows upon us. the torch hotel, undoubtedly a symbolic landmark at Aspire, boasts doha’s first revolving restaurant. For 5-star international cuisine and a venue with a captivating view, head on up to three Sixty to savour flavours while dining on the move.

Taking the lift to the forty-seventh floor keeps

you in anticipation of what’s up ahead, adding to the thrill of

the Three Sixty experience. Enjoy the warm welcome offered by Alfonso

Machleidt, the Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, who is no doubt used to hearing, “Wow! Look at the view!” or similar. Yes. This restaurant certainly boasts a lot of style… as well as an inimitable bird’s eye view over Doha.

If having dinner, the city’s circuit board vista of twinkling lights are breath taking, whereas lunchtime will no doubt offer an aerial view like no other. The tower’s industrial design elements cleverly compliment the sleek and contemporary interior, offering an impressive design aspect.

Dark red framework and wooden wall and floor panelling contrast with the panoramic glass wall running right the way around the entire space. Sturdy chrome and leather chairs accompany black marble tables sporting elegant white tableware. Intimate lighting is incorporated into the walls and flooring while chic retro chain lights hang overhead. The stylish tables are set on individual black rugs arranged single file, providing the feeling of having personal space and intimacy — despite the restaurant being fully booked.

By the time you are tucking into desert in the revolving central seating area, you’ll have enjoyed at least a 345-degree trip around the block, along with

soothing lounge tunes interspersed with live music from the pianist. A separate glass booth allows smokers to enter and indulge between meals without affecting others.

The extensive menu combines classic, international cuisine with splashes of Mediterranean flavours. Using only top-notch produce for each dish, the chefs have created a selective menu to satisfy a variety of palates.

The Torch hotel has a non-alcoholic beverage policy, so sip a refreshing Mint Cooler with lime juice, ginger, fresh mint and a splash of honey, or the Arabian Delight; a fruity cocktail adorned with fresh chunks of apple. Dip and nibble on fluffy, warm mini rolls with olive oil and balsamic vinegar while you mull over what to savour.

Soup lovers have a choice of flavours and will appreciate Fresh Tomato Cream Soup, well flavoured with roasted tomato, basil pesto oil and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Alternatively, delight your tastebuds with the Scottish Smoked Salmon Tower; three delicate portions of smoked salmon, laced with young ginger aside two scoops of lumpfish caviar atop dainty quail eggs.

For Mains, will it be ‘From the Land’ or ‘From the Sea’? The Dijon Crusted Lamb Rack has you tucking into three succulent lamb chops dusted with a smattering of Dijon seasoning, alongside a dollop of creamy garlic mash and mini heads of broccoli, all lounging on a swirl of just enough rosemary sauce to leave you wanting more. The accompanying scoop of tomato chutney offers a tangy little contrast to the meal.

‘From the Sea’ the Grilled Mixed Seafood offers the best of ocean delights with Omani lobster, prawns, calamari, salmon and hammour served with a delicate lemon sauce and fragrant saffron rice. Fortunately portions are ideally sized to allow room for dessert. The classic favourite, Crème Brulée, has a quirky yet pleasant addition of ginger and Earl Grey Tea. While the warm chocolate fudge cake, presented as pretty as a picture with a dollop of vanilla bean ice cream, is seriously rich.

With the last satisfying spoonful of dessert you’ll notice the restaurant has changed direction… and not once did you feel in the least bit giddy!

“The Danish are friendly,

cosmopolitan and extremely

advanced in terms of democracy and

Page 94: Ohlala! Qatar January 2012

There are many new destinations with Gulf Air this year, and when I heard about this new flight to Copenhagen, I was so excited to be able to visit — it was certainly an opportunity not to miss!

The flight is impressive; fast and comfortable, it exceeded my expectations. Friendly and helpful, the cabin crew offer hints and tips for the destination, whilst making sure they are providing an excellent service on board. The sky chef prepares your dish of choice from a varied menu and recommends the best drinks to accompany the food. After you have eaten a rather delicious meal, you can feel free to watch your favourite TV show, or a new movie with a portable hand held console, which is rather unique as it leaves you free to sit or lie back and relax, so that you feel refreshed on arrival.

Visiting a Scandinavian country was new to me; I was reminded of my studies — of one of my favourite Shakespeare plays — Hamlet. The fact that Shakespeare used Elsinore (Kronberg castle built in 1500s and now a UNESCO World heritage site situated in Northern Denmark) and aristocratic names for Hamlet’s friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, could suggest that he had researched the country well. Rumour has it, as my tour guides, Soren and Mikkel relayed to me, that Shakespeare could have been part of a touring group of English players documented to have been in Denmark in the late sixteenth century.

The Danish are friendly, cosmopolitan and extremely advanced in terms of democracy and way of life. My Grandmother was engaged to a Dane in the mid 1930s. Apparently she visited Copenhagen as he took her to see his homeland and meet his parents and family prior to their impending marriage. She brought back gifts of silver and amber and a Viking styled necklace, which my Mother still has and you can buy them today.

One striking thing that you notice when first arriving in Copenhagen is the beautifully warm coloured, quaint buildings, which have lots of windows and the corners of the buildings are cut off so they don’t have sharp edges. The story goes that after the British invaded Copenhagen and the Danes put up their white flags in defeat, Lord Nelson famously looked into this telescope with his blind eye and proclaimed, “I cannot see them surrendering, march ahead!” After the English finally retreated, the city was rebuilt, and in order to avoid any delays from fire and ambulance vehicles, the architects are famed to have designed the buildings without corners to make it easier to get around the streets.

The easiest way to travel around the city is to walk as everything is very close and compact. Of course, the city boasts a high number of bicycles, around 2.4 per capita to be precise, so with a population of 1.1 million that’s a whole lot of cycling, which contributes to the city being one of the most environmentally friendly places on earth. There is also a metro and tour buses, which you can hop on and off as many times as you wish with the Copenhagen travel card. If you enjoy architecture and old cobbled streets, peering into nooks and crannies and old curious shops, then walking is the best method of site seeing.

If you are familiar with design or architecture, you will be aware of the Danish philosophies of making design for life; integrating ecological, ethical methodologies and aesthetics into everything they do. It is one of the most ecologically conscious cities in the world.

Although the autumn weather is unpredictable with rain showers, it is indeed a great time to visit as the city is preparing for Halloween and there are pumpkins everywhere, especially at Tivoli, Europe’s oldest amusement park dating from 1843. With many attractions that have grown over the years, it is now filled with gardens, fairground rides, an aquarium, a Chinese puppet theatre and a concert stage as well as numerous restaurants and a hotel. One famous hotel, Nimb, boasts a Michelin star restaurant with an exquisite menu and is well worth a visit. I had smoked salmon fillet with horseradish mousse and watercress, followed by prime steak with Danish new potatoes and beetroot — delicious.

If you want to gaze at the Rosenberg castle artefacts, including the Crown Jewels and various other museum pieces, the castle is an excellent way to start your visit learning about the Kingdom’s history and the tales of the lavish Royalty’s lifestyles over the centuries.

Of course no trip to Copenhagen would be complete without a canal boat trip down the Newhaven part of town, passing the famous fairy-tale author, Hans Christian Anderson’s two residencies, and the so called “good” and “naughty” side of the canal. The “naughty side” now bustling with people in the many restaurants and bars is a place where tourists and Danish people like to mingle and enjoy an evening out. You will be taken though the harbour and out a short distance to see the Little Mermaid;

a famous statue by sculptor Edvard Eroksen in 1913, which was specially commissioned to honour the story by Hans Christian Anderson. The statue was recently on loan to the Chinese for a year and the residents found that they really missed not having her around, so when she was returned to her rightful place last year, the Danes felt like they had got their girl back!

You could easily spend a lot of time in Copenhagen as well as other areas around Denmark. Perhaps visit the city of Malmo in Sweden by train on the newly built bridge, which is just a 25 minutes ride away. I would recommend a visit in the spring. when the air is still very fresh but there are new buds on the trees and an air of anticipation. However, the town is alive with vibrancy all year round as there is so much to do, with concerts, theatre, ballet, opera, galleries, museums and much, much more. The ease of travel, friendly people and amazing design makes Copenhagen a “must visit” destination. I just can’t wait until I get the opportunity to go again!

MERcEdES BENZ c 250 couPE BLuEEFFiciENcyAt first glance the 2012 Mercedes Benz C 250 Coupe has a stylish, sporty and elegant exterior. It also combines the high levels of design, advanced engineering and safety features expected of a Mercedes Benz.

Once you enter the car you will be greeted with high quality interiors. The well-cushioned seats have a very sporty feel and you will feel nicely cocooned when tackling the twists and turns of the roads. The dashboard has a tasteful layout with a visually interesting design, which also houses a high-resolution display screen; the system is very easy to operate with the console-mounted controller. The two rear seats are spacious enough to accommodate two adults comfortably, and should you have small children child car seat attachment points are available.

Among the many safety systems the C 250 comes standard with stability and traction controls, an antilock braking system, several airbags, pedestrian protection system and crash-resistant head restraints.

The drive is terrific as the car is beautifully agile and responsive with excellent road grip. Powered by a 1.8-litre turbo-charged direct injection four-cylinder engine, the C 250 Coupe boasts precise steering and handling that enables drivers to enjoy themselves regardless of road conditions. Its stability at high speeds is simply exemplary. There are three different driving modes: Economic, Sport and Manual, and switching between the three is very convenient with a press of a button.

The engine might not be the biggest rumbler out there, but it produces 201 horse-powers and goes from 0-100 kilometres per hour in a respectable 7.2 seconds. If you are after more power (or want your husband to steal your car!), opt for the C 350, which comes with a V6; or for the C 63 AMG with V8, both of which are members of the beautiful C-Class Coupe family.

All in all, the C 250 harmonises style, practicality and driveability in a lovely package — another German engineering marvel.

Horoscope

December 22 – January 19

January Happy Birthday Ms Capricorn2012 is likely to be the year of big expenses for many Capricorns. Still, you should not see this as a negative because everything you buy will be well within your means and will come about as a consequence of an increase in your income, following on from a promotion or change of job in the early part of the year. July could you see you hosting family after a disaster in the home sees them staying with you for a while and this is going to put a bit of a strain on relations. March and October will both prove to be excellent months for you in terms of romance and a lady in a yellow dress could prove instrumental in the way your love life unfolds.

Capricorn — at a glanceCapricorns are practical and prudent, ambitious and disciplined. They are also a patient sign with a good sense of humour. Always reliable and professional to the last, Capricorns are a constant sign in any moment of panic. On the negative side, they can often be moody, pessimistic, miserly with money and fatalistic. Stay well clear if they are having a bad day.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)There seems to be plenty of romance in the air this year for your sign, and those of you who have been waiting on a lover will be pleased at how the first few months of the year unfold. Cupid’s arrow is set to bring joy and happiness to you in the early part of 2012 and this is going to renew your overall confidence in the world

around you and impact on other areas of your life. Your career path is going to unfold in a more favourable fashion and the chance to increase your income and also improve your standing will both present themselves to you. 2011 may not have been kind to your heart, but fortunately that is all going to change in a big way, and by December it will be like the bad elements of your past never existed.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)Hard work brings about its own rewards and you will have much to benefit your position this year, with work prospects set to flourish and your creative side rewarded beyond anything you may have imagined. Romantically, your heart may

suffer a dip in September, but overall 2012 will also prove to be another good year in matters of love. December will see you feeling nostalgic as loved ones part for distant shores but you should look upon this as a positive because suddenly you will be provided with the chance to spread your own wings. April, June and October bring the most rewards but February could initially be a struggle when it comes to your health.

pISCES (February 19 – March 19)Travel and family are going to be two features of your life for 2012 and they both promise positive outcomes. Those of you thinking about having a family, or even adding to your group, will get good news sooner than you expected, whilst

anyone thinking about bringing parents under their roofs will enjoy an unexpected boost in early April. Finances may not be at their best for you this year, and it could be a tight squeeze to see yourself emerge from the first part of the year with a balanced bank account. However, don’t make any rash purchases and tighten those purse strings, and you may just make it onto a more even keel for the second part of the year.

ARIES (March 20 – April 19)The New Year promises great things for you, with particular emphasis placed on finance and business. 2012 will see you elevate your career, offering both travel opportunities and financial rewards. There’s also going to be the chance to

purchase a property at great discount, so long as you are prepared to put in the work to do it up because it won’t be in the best of states when you discover it. Look beyond the exterior and use your imagination to visualise what could be. Your best months will be March, April and November but overall you can expect positive things over the next 12 months.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)There is little doubt that you are going to be fired up and ready to take on all challengers in 2012, which is just as well because the year may open up with a bit of a fight for you. Not the best introduction to 2012 but you’re certainly going to be focused from the start as a consequence. On

a more positive note, there will be a lot to think about where family are concerned and you may need to reshuffle both the home and your weekly agenda to accommodate these changes. January and July are going to be significant when it comes to financial matters, whilst September will see you taking a long overdue break to foreign shores, possibly with romantic overtones.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22)Health issues will be the chief matter for you to deal with this year and it may be the middle of 2012 — between May and August — when you are at your most vulnerable. Because a great number of you will not be burdened by financial

or work concerns, thanks to sensible planning in 2011, health concerns will be your biggest hurdle. One caveat to this could come in the form of a young female relative who could make a request for money around March, and whilst you may oblige, you could find her back wanting more in September, so perhaps understanding her entire demands before you sign over any money would be a wiser thing to do.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)Your world is set to be a very different place in 2012, with a great number of changes likely to occur from the middle of March onwards. How prepared you are for this depends chiefly upon whether you are conducive to new experiences. Generally, you are a sign that adapts well to

fresh challenges so it shouldn’t be an issue for most. Those of you who may be a little more hesitant need to develop greater flexibility and embrace the opportunities out there. May will be a key month for you, and if you get all your tasks for the year correctly lined up, then you can look forward to a very productive final phase of the month. On the relationship front, watch your back with a rival for a partner.

VIRGO (August 23 — September 22)Soul searching will be something you are engaged quite a lot in over the first few months of 2011 as the reality of your future becomes more apparent. It might seem initially daunting, but in the long run you will no doubt reap the rewards and by the

end of the year, not only will you be a very different person, you’ll also find yourself in a very different place to the one you start the year in. On a different note, a male dressed in blue will make his way into your life around the third bringing a smile to your face, but be careful not to trust everything he says until you have properly analysed the situation. Finally, your stand out month is September in matter of finance.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Rich is the person whose greatest asset is the love and friendship of others and this year you will see that sentiment demonstrated in the most profound fashion. Never will this appear more evident than in February. You may also find yourself hampered by financial restraints in

the first part of the year and this isn’t going to help your mood at all. However, friends and relatives will surprise you by rallying together and assisting you back onto the road to recovery. Reflection will later show you just how well you are loved and to what extent you should learn to appreciate it more. Good luck will come your way in May when the turnaround in your life begins, but ensure you show your gratitude otherwise December could be a colder affair than you’re used to!

SCORpIO (October 23 – November 21)For Scorpio the year is likely to pan out with favourable results, the early part seeing you drawn towards the affections of a Taurean you first met through business late in 2011. This person may not even be in the same country as you but so strong was your initial connection that

you are both likely to use any excuse to try being together. The latter part will see you focusing on the progression of your career from July onwards and the opportunity to work overseas may coincidentally tie in nicely with your romantic aspirations so good news all round. The only note of caution could relate to finances which may be stretched for much of the next 12 months so mind those pennies wisely.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)Look long and hard at the progress of your rivals over the coming months because you could find yourself the victim of an initial confrontation in the workplace as alliances are formed and people you thought were friends turn out to be anything

but that. You have made one particular person close to you come to seriously resent your position and jealousy is leading to gossip and a clash of personalities as things reach a head in September. On a more positive front, a new relationship first formed in June will strengthen over the summer, and by December you could be thinking seriously about taking it to the next level.

Hi. As I write this, we’re still in 2011, but by the time you grace yourself upon this monthly dose of reading pleasure, it’ll be a cool 2012. So [as I prematurely and momentarily

celebrate] happy New Year friends! Blessings, prosperity, good stuff, to the fullest, may it be beautiful, plentiful… all that.

As you may recall this time last month I was in Paris. Weddings and so. Much fun. Then there was London. Meetings upon work upon family duties upon good times included Hip Hop Shakespeare Company, whose inspiring projects and rapid growth continues to amaze. A tour of the Louis Vuitton "apartment" and news of exciting collaborations in 2012, the launch of Taio Cruz's new watch collection and MTV's Staying Alive affair, which raised an impressive 64,000 GBP in aid of HIV/Aids research. My regular "spot", Mau Mau's on Portabello road, was as pleasant as it’s always been. Still in love with Makan. Completely off Nando's now (I know, shocking). Camden food places, as in pretty much all of them, still great. An interview and workshop exercise with Loved & Gifted, as one of their newly appointed ambassadors. The UK based organisation is basically focused on empowering young people through the arts and positive imagery — quite the honour.

Following that was Bahrain, and a very successful Jewellery Arabia exhibition. I was completely and utterly besotted with everything David Webb. Not quite sure whether his recent inspirations derive from the mother continent’s tribal decadence or a dancehall rave in Dalston. Either way, blown away.

Now, I’m in Kuwait, and can we just have a moment on how inspiring the fashion is here? Holy. Moly. Shopping districts and eateries are openly entertaining runway shows; a radiant view of unabashed experimentation. Unabashed is the key word here. Just unafraid to try. Fearless — and fierce with it. Eloquent and crazy at the exact same time. Forward yet traditionally respectful. Tastefully eccentric. Unique vintage odes merged with a “yes I took it there” ghetto fabulousness! No really. I saw that. Furthermore, never, not once, did I witness a vibrant mix of colours done badly. A pause for applause, if you will.

Much talk around Kuwait's new Missoni Hotel (which opened back in May of this year) led us to

making it our chosen place of residence. It was cute, from start to finish, and if you’re a Missoni lover then you’ll enjoy drenching yourself in absolutely everything. Indeed, the hotel literally dripped in the brand’s trademark psychedelic colours, patterns and floral prints.

The mission: Pretty Little Things, a pop-up mall of sorts. Gorgeous boutiques selling the cutest of all sorts to a savvy crowd of Kuwait’s social media gurus, society ladies, cool dudes and yummy mummies over three days of retail happiness. Green Bar was the only participating vendor from abroad, and well, as expected, everyone went a little crazy over the brand’s all natural beauty products. It’s not every day you come across a line of skin care made strictly for the purpose of skin caring — no crap included. Just like Cleopatra did.

One more Gulf state related thing; I detest what is franchised, mass-produced and horribly over-exposed, particularly when it comes to eating. So, Kuwait’s concepts in local dining wasn’t just a breath of fresh air, it was an ongoing breeze of deliciousness. Brilliant ideas in fresh taste bud joy thanks to Kuwaiti chefs… I love that. Applause-ing you. Again.
