    ity,$carried$out$study$visits,$written$exiting$and$interesting$articles$and$gained$new$knowl:edge$about$your$future$roles$as$managers$in$urban$processes.$You$have$all$the$required$

    knowledge$and$skills$to$finalize$your$studies!$

    Course&Structure&&The!course!is!divided!into!three!parts:!the!first!weeks!we!meet!once!per!week!for!a!tutorial!or!a!lecture,!week!1620!you!work!individually!with!your!theses!and!finally!week!2122!you!hand!in!

    the!thesis!and!prepare!an!opposition!on!another!thesis.!Three!days!are!reserved!for!thesis!seminar!with!presentations!and!opposition.!Your!presence!is!expected!during!all!presentations.!The!presentations!are!public!and!you!are!welcome!to!invite!friends!and/or!family!to!come!and!listen.!!

    Guidelines&for&Thesis&According!to!Hgskolelagen!(the!Swedish!law!for!higher!education)!higher!education!shall!be!based!in!science.!The!aim!of!writing!a!thesis!is!that!students!should!practice!and!become!knowledgeable!of!how!to!plan,!conduct!and!present!a!scientific!investigation.!A!thesis!should!combine!creativity,!systematic!collection!of!data,!critical!analysis!and!logical!conclusions.!

    The!thesis!should!be!based!on!a!topic!of!your!choosing!within!the!general!frame!of!Sustainable!Urban!Development.!In!the!thesis!students!deepen!their!understanding!of!a!particular!area.!

    The!course!consists!of!a!written!thesis!(14!credits)!and!participation!at!the!thesis!seminar!(1!credit)!and!is!equivalent!of!10!weeks!fulltime!studies.!

    The!thesis!should!be!written!individually!and!be!based!in!research.!Students!can!(after!consultation)!also!write!their!thesis!in!pairs,!but!will!still!be!assessed!individually.!

    Starting up

    Before!you!can!start!the!actual!investigation!of!your!thesis!(collecting!data,!doing!observations,!carrying!out!interviews,!writing!etc.)!there!are!some!requirements!that!need!to!be!fulfilled.!In!order!to!start!the!thesis!investigation!students!shall:!

    Have!finalized!at!least!30!credits!in!the!SUM!programme!and!have!written!a!paper!of!10!credits!that!has!been!graded!pass.!

    Students!should!hand!in!an!outline!of!the!subject!and!a!time!plan!for!the!thesis!!

    The!chosen!subject!should!be!accepted!

    Choice of Subject

    Students!propose!a!subject!for!their!thesis!in!the!form!of!an!outline.!The!subject!should!be!accepted!by!the!course!director.!In!order!to!get!accepted,!the!subject!needs!to!be!set!within!the!field!of!Sustainable!Urban!Development!and!Management!and!the!investigation!should!be!characterized!by!depth!and!complexity.!The!thesis!should!refer!to!literature!and/or!studies!presented!in!the!SUM!programme.!

    Students!can!choose!to!further!develop!one!of!the!group!work!investigations!carried!out!during!autumn,!to!continue!to!investigate!one!or!two!issues!covered!in!the!paper!written!in!the!GUC!course!or!propose!a!new!subject.!Students!can!also!choose!to!carry!out!an!investigation!related!to!ongoing!research!at!Urban!Studies.!Another!option!is!to!write!about!a!subject!of!interest!to!a!municipality,!an!authority!or!private!company.!Part!of!the!thesis!can!include!design!proposals.!It!is!important!to!note!that!a!thesis!should!not!be!a!consultancy!but!a!research!investigation!(which!of!course!can!be!of!relevance!to!the!authority!and/or!company).!!To!support!the!choice!of!subject!we!will!meet!for!discussion!and!will!visit!the!Municipality!of!Malm!to!hear!about!their!current!projects!and!challenges!in!Sustainable!Urban!Development.!

    Use!this!time!to!explore!a!subject!of!your!interest.!

    As!the!thesis!develops,!the!chosen!subject!might!change.!In!case!of!major!changes,!the!tutor!and!the!programme!director!should!be!informed!and!agree!to!suggested!changes.!

    Outline and Time Plan

    Students!shall!present!an!outline!of!one!page!of!their!proposed!thesis.!!The!outline!should!present!the!subject!field,!problem!statement,!methods!and!expected!results.!The!outline!is!a!proposal,!but!try!to!be!as!specific!as!you!can,!since!that!will!facilitate!discussions!with!your!tutor!and!will!help!you!start!the!investigation!early!on!in!the!semester.!

    Attached!to!the!outline,!a!time!plan!of!one!page!should!be!presented.!!The!main!dates!are!as!follows:!the!outline!should!be!published!on!March!8,!the!outlines!should!be!accepted!(or!not)!before!March!11.!The!first!meeting!in!class!is!March!16!and!the!submission!of!

    Thesis!is!on!May!23.!This!means!that!you!have!10!weeks!of!fulltime!studies!to!complete!your!thesis.!The!time!is!limited!and!therefore!it!is!highly!relevant!to!write!a!realistic!time!plan.!

    Teaching and Learning Methods

    The!thesis!is!a!individual!research!assignment!which!means!that!students!are!expected!to!conduct!a!significant!amount!of!independent!work!apart!from!classes.!Classes!are!significantly!fewer!than!in!previous!courses!and!time!is!instead!assigned!for!tutoring.!

    We!will!meet!for!three!tutorials!during!the!course.!Students!are!expected!to!prepare!for!the!tutorials.!You!will!be!asked!to!read!each!others!papers,!analyze!articles!and!bring!course!literature!to!the!tutorials.!!

    Its!learning!is!used!to!present!course!information!(lectures,!studyvisits,!etc)!and!for!students!to!publish!(upload)!their!thesis!in!draft!and!final!versions.!

    Tutors''

    Students!will!be!assigned!a!tutor.!The!role!of!the!tutor!is!to!support!the!progress!of!the!thesis,!to!give!guidance!on!methods,!theory!and!literature!references.!The!tutors!should!support,!guide!and!advice!the!students!and!critically!assess!the!study.!

    It!is!the!responsibility!of!each!student!to!keep!in!touch!with!the!tutor!and!to!make!sure!that!the!thesis!develops.!

    Each!thesis!is!assigned!15!hours.!These!hours!include!meetings,!reading!and!commenting!on!the!text!and!approximately!2030%!of!this!time!is!spent!with!the!student!in!discussions!at!meetings.!Use!the!time!wisely!Send!in!your!drafts!on!time,!the!tutors!should!be!able!to!read!the!text!before!you!meet!to!make!the!meetings!as!efficient!and!fruitful!as!possible.!Bring!questions!and!comments!for!the!discussion.!!

    It!is!up!to!each!student!and!tutor!to!agree!on!how!to!work,!but!our!experience!is!that!discussing!the!text!is!crucial!at!certain!moments!in!the!process.!Below!is!an!example!of!how!to!make!use!of!

    the!dialogue!with!your!tutor.!

    1. The!first!meeting!should!take!place!as!early!in!the!process!as!possible.!From!the!outline!you!discuss!the!subject,!methods!theory!and!expected!conclusions.!Students!are!recommended!to!have!an!open!attitude!so!that!you!can!narrow!the!subject!and!agree!on!a!more!precise!outline.!

    2. The!second!meeting!should!also!take!place!early!on!in!the!process.!Before!the!second!meeting!students!should!have!developed!their!first!ideas!into!a!more!elaborate!idea!of!the!direction!of!the!study.!Before!you!meet!your!tutor!you!should!have!carried!out!a!first!literature!search,!in!order!to!discuss!relevant!literature!for!the!study.!At!the!meeting,!discuss!and!write!down!what!empirical!data!you!will!use!and!how!it!will!be!gathered.!Consider!a!

    research!problem!that!can!be!answered!both!empirically!and!theoretically.!!3. The!third!meeting!should!take!place!before!you!start!collecting!the!empirical!data.!At!this!

    meeting!students!should!have!developed!the!thesis!and!elaborated!on!the!problem!statement!and!the!research!question/s.!You!should!also!have!developed!the!overall!research!design!and!reflect!on!the!selected!methods.!Use!the!methods!literature!from!previous!courses!and!add!references!for!your!current!study!to!motivate!choice!of!methods!and!the!relation!to!your!theory/concepts!of!the!study.!Note!the!importance!of!discussing!with!your!tutor!before!you!collect!the!empirical!data!Discuss!and!go!through!interview!guides,!observation!sheet,!questionnaires!and!possible!ethical!considerations.!The!tutor!should!review!these!documents!before!you!start!collecting!the!data.!

    4. The!fourth!meeting!should!take!place!after!the!collection!of!data.!This!is!an!important!part!

    of!the!process!where!you!should!assess!and!analyze!the!material.!Only!when!the!analysis!(or!at!least!parts!of!it)!is!done!should!you!meet!and!discuss!with!your!tutor.!You!can!of!course!contact!your!tutor!if!you!have!short!questions,!but!in!order!for!the!discussion!to!be!as!efficient!and!useful!as!possible,!it!is!important!that!the!tutor!can!read!the!written!analysis!and!comment!on!the!text.!!

    5. At!the!final!meeting!the!text!should!be!reviewed!and!the!discussion!relate!to!how!the!problem,!theory,!methods!and!results!of!the!thesis!are!tied!together.!Take!care!to!also!write!the!discussion.!Students!who!have!an!elaborate!discussion!and!a!closetofinal!version!of!the!thesis!will!find!this!meeting!helpful!to!finalize!their!study!!

    The!thesis!should!be!2530!pages,!not!including!title!page,!table!of!content,!references!and!appendices.!The!thesis!should!be!written!in!Times!New!Roman!12!points!(or!similar),!single!spacing!and!have!a!consistent!layout.!!

    The!structure!of!the!thesis!should!include!the!parts!mentioned!below.!The!disposition!can!be!altered!if!considered!necessary!and!is!in!agreement!with!the!tutor.!!

    Page$1.!The!first!page!repeats!the!title!and!gives!more!information!of!the!programme,!tutor,!examinator!etc.!

    Summary.!The!first!part!of!the!thesis!is!a!onepage!summary.!Remember!to!include!the$whole$study!in!the!summary,!in!a!similar!way!to!the!abstract!of!an!article.!!

    Key$words.!Present!a!short!list!of!keywords!at!the!end!of!the!summary.!The!key!words!should!place!the!study!in!the!field!of!sustainable!urban!development.!!

    Introduction,'aim'and'problem'

    The!introduction!shall!set!the!thesis!subject!in!the!context!of!sustainable!urban!development!and!be!supported!by!references!to!course!literature!and!subject!specific!articles.!In!the!introduction!you!should!present!the!background!to!the!question/s!you!will!analyze!and!answer!and!state!why!this!field!is!relevant!and!meaningful!to!study.!You!can!relate!the!introduction!to!ongoing!research,!debate!and/or!current!policy.!Note!that!the!introduction!should!lead,!in!a!clearly!motivated!way,!to!the$aim!of!the!study.!

    The!problem!analyzed!should!be!briefly!and!clearly!presented.!Present!a!problem$statement!followed!by!13!research$questions.!

    The!theoretical!starting!points!shall!be!motivated!by!the!research!problem!and!aim!of!the!thesis.!In!the!beginning!of!this!chapter!it!is!therefore!important!to!explain!why!the!specific!concept!or!theory!has!been!chosen.!Note!the!important!relation!between!theory!and!method.!!

    It!is!common!to!present!the!theoretical!frame!in!the!form!of!a!number!of!concepts.!It!is!important!to!be!selective!and!reflect!on!which!concept/s!are!really!needed!to!answer!the!questions!of!the!study.!Present!only!the!concept/theory!that!you!use!in!the!analysis!!and!nothing!else.!Carefully!consider!the!difference!between!presenting!the!research!field!in!the!introduction!(where!you!present!the!bigger!picture)!and!the!theory!or!concept/s.!

    Students!who!study!architecture!or!urban!planning!shall!present!design!approaches!and!similar!under!a!subheading!in!the!theory!chapter.!Note!that!design!only!is!not!a!possible!subject!for!a!thesis!in!Built!Environment,!but!can!be!a!very!interesting!part!of!the!conclusions!of!a!study.!!

    Students!who!study!energy!efficiency,!building!materials,!urban!climate!or!similar!are!likely!to!have!a!focus!on!the!methods!chapter!rather!than!the!theory!chapter.!

    Presentation'of'Object'of'Study'

    A!presentation!of!the!object!of!study!(a!neighbourhood,!a!process!or!policy)!often!facilitates!reading!and!understanding!the!text.!Note!that!the!presentation!of!the!object!of!study!is!only!descriptive!in!character.!Present!the!facts!!such!as!plans,!photos!and!basic!information!!but!leave!out!your!analysis!or!interpretation!of!the!object!of!study.!!

    Analysis'

    In!the!analysis!you!present!the!results!of!your!study.!It!is!important!to!present!the!results!in!a!clear!and!logical!way.!Try!to!find!a!way!to!organize!the!empirical!material,!perhaps!according!to!themes!that!you!have!elaborate.!Use!subheadings!to!present!the!themes!!this!makes!it!easier!for!the!reader!to!follow!the!organization!of!the!analysis.!!

    Another!important!aspect!is!that!you!should!present!the!empirical!data!in!a!rich,!but!not!exaggerated!way.!Presentation!of!citations!and/or!observations!is!common.!Note!that!the!empirical!data!is!never!selfevident.!When!your!present!a!citation,!start!with!an!introduction,!then!present!the!citation!and!explain!what!you!find!is!of!importance!after!the!citation.!Present!and!explain!one!citation!at!a!time,!and!do!not!line!up!citations!one!after!the!other.!If!you!have!both!citation!and!observations!(or!similar)!present!both!of!them!under!the!elaborated!themes!rather!than!first!presenting!the!analysis!of!the!interviews!and!then!the!analysis!of!the!observations.!!

    Conclusion'and'Discussion'

    In!the!conclusion!present!a!brief!summary!of!the!results!and!the!research!questions!of!the!study!(in!a!few!sentences!only).!The!conclusion!may!be!obvious!to!you!as!the!author!but!a!brief!summary/!repetition!helps!the!reader!understand!the!text!and!follow!your!line!of!thought!in!the!discussion.!!

    In!the!discussion!you!interpret!the!results!through!reasoning!and!evaluating!the!results.!(One!way!to!think!about!this!is!that!before!the!discussion!the!author!is!inside!the!study!but!in!the!discussion!the!author!takes!a!step!outside!the!study!and!reflects!on!it).!Answer!some!of!the!following!questions:!How!have!you!answered!the!question/s!and!fulfilled!the!aim?!Are!the!results!supportive!of!

    The!thesis!shall!have!a!correctly!written!reference!list.!!The!appendices!shall!be!correctly!referred!to!and!can!contain!interview!guides,!plans,!photos,!and!observation!sheets.!

    Other'Considerations'

    One!important!issue!in!writing!a!thesis!is!the!metacommunication,!to!continuously!inform!the!reader!of!the!direction!of!the!text.!One!common!way!to!do!this!is!to!start!every!chapter!with!an!introduction!of!a!couple!of!sentences.!Another!important!part!of!metacommunication!is!relating!the!different!parts!of!the!thesis!in!continuous!discussion!throughout!the!text.!!

    In!order!to!present!the!thesis!at!the!seminar!the!thesis!should!be!approved!by!the!tutor.!(Students!have!the!right!to!hand!in!their!thesis!for!examination!even!if!the!tutor!does!not!approve).!!

    Examinators!will!be!appointed!among!the!teaching!staff!at!US.!It!is!the!examinator,!and!not!the!tutor,!who!sets!the!grade!for!the!thesis.!Both!the!written!text!and!the!oral!presentation!and!defence!are!part!of!the!examination!and!have!to!be!approved!by!the!examinator!before!the!thesis!will!pass.!

    The'Thesis'Seminar'

    At!the!seminar!each!thesis!will!have!30!minutes!for!presentations!and!discussions.!A!list!of!what!thesis!to!comment!on!will!be!sent!out!a!few!days!before!the!seminar.!Students!who!will!not!pass!will!not!be!asked!to!present.!

    The!author!will!give!a!brief!presentation!of!510!minutes.!Then!the!opponent!present!her/his!understanding!of!the!thesis,!makes!a!summary!of!the!most!important!issues!and!the!author!responds.!After!the!summary!the!opponent!asks!some!clarifying!questions!that!the!author!responds!to.!The!aim!is!to!have!an!interesting!and!constructive!dialogue.!This!discussion!should!take!10!minutes.!The!examinator!will!then!give!comments!and!add!some!questions.!Finally!the!participants!at!the!seminar!will!have!the!possibility!to!ask!questions.!

    The!role!as!opponent!is!very!important.!Try!to!make!the!opposition!interesting!for!all!participants,!present!and!discuss!with!the!aim!to!make!all!present!understand!the!thesis!even!if!not!everyone!have!read!it.!Do!not!spend!too!much!time!on!details,!but!be!constructive.!Formal!aspects!!akribi!and!possible!spelling!mistakes!can!be!given!on!a!list!to!the!author.!Remember!that!it!is!the$text!and!not!the!author!that!is!the!focus!of!the!discussion.!
