OCTOBER 2020 Osprey - 1
Black Hall Club
All about the Greens
Old Lyme, Connecticut October 2020
President’s Message
Tom Degnan [email protected]
The summer heat is hopefully over and cooler, less humid conditions should let the crew speed up greens and keep the fairways a little drier. I am sure most of you have noticed some dead spots in the rough around the course, particularly around the greens. It is unfortunate to see, but these sites have been seeded and are starting to repair with new growth. The problem we are seeing is primarily an insect that likes Kentucky bluegrass, which our rough is comprised of. This is why the bent grass fairways adjacent to the rough are unaffected. We have seen it before and while it is upsetting to see around the course, the repair is easy and already underway.
Now that our summer staff is gone and the crew is starting a little later in the morning because of a later sunrise, members may encounter the crew more often in the day trying to get their work done. Please be respectful of the hard work they are doing and understand that they are trying to give us the best possible course they can.
October begins the new fiscal year at Black Hall and minimums will begin effective October 1st. The dining room will remain open Tue-Sun, 11:30am-2:30pm, up through Sunday, October 25th. Again, thank you to Kathy and her staff for another wonderful season!
Please be sure to continue to follow proper COVID-19 precautions while at Black Hall, including social distancing and wearing masks when appropriate.
If you are leaving for the warmer weather, please be sure that your locker is unlocked and empty. For those members remaining, you have until December 31st to empty lockers. The lockers will be cleaned in January and February and will be available for use on March 1st .
HOUSE Lee Ann Palladino [email protected]
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am very pleased to announce that Ron Furr has been unanimously selected as an Emeritus Member of Black Hall Club. This is an honor richly deserved.
The annual meeting will be held on October 17th at 4:00 p.m. in the dining room. We encourage all members to attend. If you cannot attend, please send your proxy to Nancy. Cocktails and appetizers will be available after the meeting. .

THEY LOOK CUTE BUT…... It seemed like a good idea - having a granola bar in your golf bag just in case you need a snack. However, when Dr. Amdur retrieved his bag from storage, someone had gotten to his snack first! A critter-sized hole was found from the inside of his golf bag into the pocket where the granola bar was. Clearly these critters are hungry and determined!
The good news? They can’t open a bottle. Whatever special drinks you may have in there are safe and sound!

There is still an abundance of inventory for you to choose from with new inventory still arriving. With cooler temperatures on the way, the golf shop has been stocked with jackets, sweaters, golf shirts and much more!
Colder temperatures don’t mean the season is over, it only means you dress a
bit warmer!!
TIP:
Dress for colder temperatures by layering with different lighter weight
shirts and windproof jackets rather than wearing one or two heavier pieces….LAYER UP!
Our demo club inventory is heavily used and clubs go out frequently as
it is a very important part of the process of purchasing golf equipment. This inventory
often needs to be returned to the manufacturer each fall. If you have any demo clubs from the golf shop, PLEASE return them to us ASAP. If you have a club and won’t be here in the next few days, please call and notify us.
