A VISION FOR THE FUTURE FROM OUR PAST
In 1958, Jules Prown, a Harvard graduate and art historian from Massachusetts, was hired to be the first director of both the Society for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks in York County, and the Old Gaol Museum. During his months in York, Prown reviewed the structure and function of the historical organi-zations here and recommended strategies for future development. His first strategy, the
joining of York's three historical organizations, came to fruition twenty-six years later in 1984 when the Old York Historical and Improvement Society, the Old Gaol Committee, and Historic Landmarks became the Old York Historical Society.
A second significant strategy from 1958 never was fully implemented, but has reso-nance for today. Prown envisioned two centers for historical activities in York Vil-lage - a public center at Jefferds Tavern, and an administrative center at the Elizabeth Perkins House in the former 1920s servant quarters. Jefferds Tavern for many years was the seasonal reception center of the mu-seum, and the addition of the Parsons Edu-cation Center and Remick Gallery, funded through the Heritage Campaign of 2004-2008, has strengthened our ability to accom-modate visitors and programs, year round.
For decades however, the Elizabeth Perkins House has had limited use. As the result of Old York’s strategic planning, a new and vibrant use is planned for the 1920s servant wing of the house, while continuing to maintain and interpret Elizabeth Perkins' 18th century main house and collection. The wing will become administrative offices for Old York.
Converting space in the Perkins House necessitates moving stored col-lections to another location. Every available nook and cranny of the rambling house and most other museum buildings are used for storage, and by 2013 the museum storage facility, the Harry Winebaum Collec-tions Center in York Beach was at capacity as well. In fact, for many years Old York has struggled to store and maintain its important collec-tion of objects, art, archival materials, and library of reference books.
In Spring 2014 Old York placed the 2,000 square feet York Beach property on the market, which sold within days and netted the museum $455,000. Soon thereafter, the society purchased an 8,000 square feet former professional office in Kittery for $390,600. With a profit of more than $60,000, the new storage facility is being renovated as the Harry Winebaum Collec-tions Center - Kittery.
Renovations to create a Perkins House administrative center is planned to begin in 2016, fulfilling Prown’s vision from 1958.

2013-2014 PROGRAMMING IN REVIEW
With a renewed commitment to serving the people of the greater York community, museum staff continued popular seasonal events and developed new year-round programming including:

RETIREMENT
Virginia Spiller (seen here with Jon Powers, head of Buildings and Grounds) retired in 2013 as Old York’s librarian, having begun volunteering to develop museum educational programming in 1977.
Visitors enjoyed historic holiday spirit at the 2013 Christmas Tea.

ENDOWMENT & BENEFICIARY FUNDS
ENDOWMENT FUNDS SUSTAIN OLD YORK’S OPERATIONS
The Old York Historical Society receives no public tax support, and therefore relies on memberships and annual giving, earned income, fundraising events, foundation grants, and endowment funds for operations as well as special support.
Old York’s endowment funds combine those of its three predeces-sor organizations: Old York Historical and Improvement Society; Old Gaol Museum; and Society for the Preservation of Landmarks in York County. Since the joining of the three in 1984, additional gifts have been made, including those given during the 2004-2008 Heritage Capital Campaign.
The society’s investment policy limits the use of income from endowments to approximately 5% of a rolling 12-quarter average of the total value of the funds. At the end of Fiscal Year 2013-14 the value of permanently restricted, temporarily restricted, and unrestricted endowment funds was $4,814,691: Old York used income in the amount of $239,620 or 4.98%.
