New Program Certificate of Achievement in Veterinary Assisting

Students completing this certificate will gain an understanding of the day-to-day of veterinary practice and basic skills that will make them valuable as a member of the veterinary medical or support team. Skills acquired will include basic animal handling, restraint, laboratory specimen collection and testing, pharmacy skills, recordkeeping, nursing care, and client communication. In addition, students will understand and practice sterility and veterinary medical language. This program will also provide a foundation of knowledge and skills for further veterinary education for students hoping to pursue licensure as a registered veterinary technician or veterinary school.

Fall 2020 Veterinary science is a valuable part of the COS curriculum that is closely related to Animal Science, Equine Science, and Dairy Science, but meetings with local veterinarians and academic teams (Fresno State) agree that a licensed veterinary technician program does not serve our area or best equip our students for employment. Educational teams like the idea of incorporating a Veterinary Assisting Certificate into the Animal Science Associates Degree, allowing students further educational opportunity should they so desire, and veterinarians appreciate students having skills at the time of hire (as traditionally, veterinary assistants are trained on the job). Labor market information shows that in the greater South Valley area, there are approximately 85 veterinary assistant jobs open each year, compared to about 40 veterinary technician jobs, with a difference of less than $1 per hour starting wage. Field growth from 2017 to 2022 is estimated to be approximately 12%, and national projections predict that growth to continue through the end of this decade. Currently, only San Joaquin Valley College has a similar program in place, and is not currently producing enough students to meet projected market demands.
