Welcome to Lifelong LearningYou have just taken the first step on the pathway to learning by choosing to read the Lifelong Learning prospectus.

This prospectus lists courses available to you and gives you information about the centres we teach in and the support services and facilities we provide. These are our pre-planned courses. In addition, throughout the year, we offer other learning opportunities in response to local need. A second edition of Focus will be available in December.We will help you gain the skills you need to get a job, move on in your career, work within your community or perhaps start your own business. Courses will also give you the opportunity to develop or learn new skills as part of our community and family learning programme.We will support you at every step of your learning journey. You can read about some of our learners’ experiences and achievements alongside the information about the courses and services we offer. All our learners are proud to say that they have changed their lives by joining a Lifelong Learning course. You will be welcomed to our centres by staff who will help you to choose your course, give information on support facilities and work with you to enable you to reach your goals. Courses are also taught in schools and community centres across the whole of Oldham. Please note that although we work to provide fully accessible learning, there may be some locations in a school or community centre where access is limited.Crèches are available at three of our main centres and many community locations to support daytime courses (subject to minimum numbers). Crèche charges are shown on page 11. Charges do not apply to Family Learning courses.Coldhurst – This centre has an IT suite and a large hall in addition to light and airy classrooms. There is a small car park.Failsworth – The Lifelong Learning Service is based in the renovated Failsworth Town Hall. This building has been upgraded and extended to a high standard with bright modern rooms and facilities whilst still retaining many of the original features such as stained glass windows and period ceilings. The Library is also based in this building which gives learners easy access to books and research facilities.In addition to classrooms and community space, there is also a large function room which is available for hire.Parking is available close to the centre.Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre – This exciting centre has superb facilities including IT suites, wet and dry craft rooms and a well-equipped crèche. The reception desk for the Lifelong Learning Service is located at the back right hand side of the building beyond the Library and Gallery main reception.

Disabled parking is available in front of the centre – please telephone to arrange access.Public/pay and display parking is available:• Adjacent to the Centre on the Southgate Street side• Union Street parking spaces• Spindles multi-storey car park• Ten cycle racks are available on Greaves Street

Pottery Centre – (Entrance – Firth Street) Pottery and ceramics courses take place in the Pottery Centre at the rear of the Lyceum Building. Public/pay and display parking is available as detailed above at Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre.Shaw – This centre is located in the heart of Shaw. An IT suite and a large hall complement the classrooms. Parking is available behind the centre.Turf Lane, Chadderton – This busy centre includes a large hall, light and modern classrooms and a teaching kitchen. There is a car park behind the centre.Werneth Park – Set in Werneth Park this building contains an IT suite, a large hall and spacious classrooms. A lift gives access to the first floor. The centre is just off the main route to Manchester. There is a large car park within the park.

Information, advice, guidance and supportEvery year thousands of adult learners join us at Oldham Lifelong Learning to start or re-start their learning.Some want to learn new skills to get a job. Some want to gain new qualifications to help them obtain a job, progress in their work, or make a change in their career.Some want to improve their reading, writing, speaking, maths or computer skills because not having these skills is causing them problems in the job market and in their everyday life.We understand that many people joining us may not have studied for many years, and may not have had the best experience of education in school. We strive to provide the right learning experience for adults as we work together to provide a supportive learning environment to meet the needs of all our learners.We can offer as much information, advice, guidance and support as you need, when you need it, including guidance from The National Careers Service.

Enrolment: How to join a courseIf you want to discuss course details and choices with specialist teachers and support staff then come along to one of our advice and guidance sessions. These will all be held at:

Telephone and online enrolmentYou can enrol for some courses by telephone or online. These are the courses that do not require you to have an interview or a skills check.By telephone: Ring any of our centres (see list on the back of the brochure).Online www.oldham.gov.uk/lifelongFor both these options have your credit or debit card ready along with the details of the course and your personal information.You must pay the full course fee when you enrol, course fees are set out in each course list. Please note we cannot accept telephone or online enrolments if you are entitled to a fee concession as we need to see proof of your concession. Concessionary feesPlease note that you must provide proof of your entitlement to concessionary fees when you enrol. Information about concessionary fees can be found on page 52-53.

Discretionary Learner SupportIf you are experiencing financial hardship and have difficulty paying the costs of course fees, books, materials, travel or childcare you may apply for financial support from the Discretionary Learner Support Fund. Please ask for further advice and information and an application form when you enrol, or ring any of our centres and staff will be able to advise you on the process.

Advanced Learner Loans You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan if:• Your course starts after August 2016 and is an eligible course at Level 3. These loans help learners pay the course fees charged by colleges and learning providers. Getting a loan doesn’t depend on household income and there is no credit check.If you have a loan, repayments don’t start until April 2017 and you won’t have to pay anything back until you earn an annual salary of over £21,000.If you want to enrol on a Level 3 course with Lifelong Learning and are interested in applying for an Advanced Learning Loan please contact Simon Bennett on 0161 770 1238.

Advanced Loan Bursary Fund If you have an approved Advanced Learner Loan you may also apply to the associated Bursary Fund. You can apply to this fund once your loan has been approved.This fund can provide financial help to pay for things like travel, childcare, course materials, books and equipment. Please ask for an application form after you have received your loan approval letter.

Learning SupportWe are committed to inclusive learning and welcome all learners at Oldham Lifelong Learning Service. Our skilled and experienced Learning Support team work alongside tutors to enable learners with additional support needs to access our full range of provision.The Learning Support department has a wide range of adaptive technology and equipment to use in all of our Lifelong Learning centres.

Learning support can include:• Alternative formats for course material and information e.g. large print• In-class support for learners whose first language is not English• Help with study skills• Individual and group support in the classroom

Learning support can be provided for:• Learners who are deaf or hard of hearing• Blind and partially sighted learners• Learners with dyslexia• Learners with a mental health difficulty • Learners with a physical disability• Learners with a learning disability • Learners with other individual support needsPlease talk to us before enrolling onto your course if you feel you might need additional learning support. This will help us to make sure any equipment or staffing is in place for the beginning of your course. Your learning journeyIn June 2016 the Service was re-accredited to the national government Matrix Standard in information, advice and guidance. We work to this quality standard to make sure that we provide all learners with advice and guidance which meets their needs and enables them to progress and achieve their goals.

Stage 1 Advice and guidance before the course starts.

Stage 2 Induction and introduction to the course and centre. This will take place over the first few weeks.

Stage 3 Initial assessment to find your starting point. This will help to set your individual learning goals.

Stage 4 Keeping a record of your learning. You will be given a diary log, Individual Learning Plan to record progress towards your goals.

Stage 5 Feedback from your tutor about your progress. You will receive regular written and/or verbal feedback.

Stage 6 Achieving your goals.

Matrix Standard of Quality The Matrix Standard is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and guidance on learning and work. In June 2016 the Service was successfully re-assessed to the standard, which it has held since 2004.

Crèche and childcare provisionThere is a wide variety of childcare provision in Oldham. When you enrol with us we can tell you about all the childcare options including the crèches which we run to support some of our daytime classes and our Family Learning courses.Our crèches are open to children aged from six weeks to seven years. All of our crèches have qualified staff and we follow the national standards for crèches. You will need to register your child(ren) when you enrol for your course. Please note that crèches are subject to a minimum number of children attending and places are limited.A crèche may be merged or closed if enrolments do not reach the minimum number within the first three weeks. Please check that a crèche is available before enrolling for your course.Crèche charges: £3.65 per child, per session if you are paying a full course fee.• Free for all Family Learning courses.• Free to concessionary learners on courses with codes beginning with V.• Free to learners where there is a course specific concession, eg English and MathsIf you incur childcare costs related to your attendance on our courses you may be able to get financial support to meet these costs through Discretionary Learner Support Fund.Please ask for details at your advice and guidance interview or call into any of our centres and ask the reception staff. Case study:Charis Clancy and Wayne BaxendaleCouple Charis Clancy and Wayne Baxendale decided to embark on their learning journey after successfully completing a taster course at Voluntary Action Oldham. They were put in touch with tutors at the Lifelong Learning Service and it was then that they decided to sign up for courses and change their career paths. They enrolled on the Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities Level 2. Wayne also signed up for the Mental Health Awareness Level 2. Thanks to the encouragement of their tutors they have been able to get to grips with the work and their assignments have become more creative. They have used the skills they’ve learned to create a portfolio of work that is diverse and shows not just gained knowledge of the subject, but an understanding of how to change knowledge into practical application – which they can hopefully use in their future careers.“This service has truly changed our lives, as cheesy as that sounds, it has given us focus, confidence, qualifications, skills, and support. We have met people that have inspired us and made friendships. It has actually added an extra dimension to our relationship as we now have a common interest in this subject and the practicalities of completing the course. We both have plans to sign up for further courses in September, STLS level 2/3 and Charis cannot get her hands on a Focus quick enough to sign up for art/ craft based courses.People think education ends when you leave college or University, which is not the case. The Service works to provide education opportunities to everyone in Oldham.”

These provide stepping stones towards a GCSE which we offer in both English Language and Maths. Case study: Lesley ReeceLesley’s life changed completely when she made her first tentative steps in to a Lifelong Learning jewellery-making class. She suffered from agoraphobia for several years and had never left the house. She was frightened at first but quickly joined other courses such as Pottery and Mental Health Awareness. Lesley had always written poetry and in September 2015 took the brave step to join Functional Skills English and Maths. Her friends are amazed at the change in her – they say that she’s like a different person. She is now a volunteer at Inspire Women’s Centre in Oldham, helping women during difficult times in their lives. Lesley has had poetry published and is looking forward to returning to her former career of working with children with special needs. With the help of Oldham Lifelong Learning, Lesley has overcome adversity, taken small steps into learning, progressed on to Functional Skills English and Maths, volunteering and moving on to GCSEs and employment. She is an inspiration to anyone wanting to change and move on with their lives.“It’s been amazing how quickly I took to English and Maths and it has been the highlight of my week ever since. I’ve passed Level 2 in both and I’m now on the

Case study: Kathryn MessinaStudying a Level 2 Certificate in Supporting teaching and Learning in School has opened up a whole new career path for Kathryn. Case Study: June Bones June first got interested in cake decorating when she saw a wedding cake a friend had made and she thought she might like to have a go.June then joined an evening class and has been a loyal Lifelong learner and is the first to say she is still learning and still enjoys coming to class.June developed glaucoma two years ago and started to come to the afternoon Beginners Cake decorating class as she could no longer drive in the dark and she didn’t want to stop learning.She is always happy to show and discuss many different skills and she is a great mentor for others in the class. New learners are inspired and admire June and what she has achieved and how generous she is in sharing her talents and tools.June loves the social aspects of coming to class and she says the well-being and camaraderie of the tutor and other learners is of great value to her.

Case study: Lynn Maher.Following the sad death of Lynn’s sister her husband wanted to help her with her loss so he enrolled her on the Sugar Paste modelling class. She went with an open mind and no experience but has since ‘fallen in love with the craft’. With the support of the tutors and other learners she made it through the 10 week course and went onto further classes outside the borough. She is now back studying at Turf Lane Lifelong Learning Centre to further improve her skills with sugar paste flowers and other mediums.“My tutors have always challenged me and pushed for me to do more. They advised and encouraged me to enrol for my teaching qualification at Manchester college. When I have completed this my ambition is to teach and pass on my experience, skills and knowledge to even more people and inspire them to love the craft as much as I do.”

NCFE Award in Education and Training Level 3(Formerly known as PTLLS)This course is an introductory teaching qualification for anyone interested in training and teaching adults. It will prepare learners for teaching in a wide range of contexts and does not require learners to be teaching. It is a valuable introduction to the theory and practice of delivering learning.The aims of the course are to:• Understand roles and responsibilities in lifelong learning• Understand inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong

learning• Use inclusive learning and teaching approaches in

lifelong learning• Understand principles of assessment in lifelong learning• Gain confidence in preparation for teaching• Develop the foundations of good practice in teaching

You can progress within the framework of the Qualified Teacher – Learning and Skills (QTLS) to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (formerly CTLLS) and Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (formerly DTLLS).No prior teaching experience is necessary to join the NCFE Level 3 Award. However substantial subject knowledge in a specific area at Level 3/A Level is required and at least a Level 2 in Literacy and some ICT skills are essential. It is also useful to have the ability to talk in front of a class or small group of people.The offer of a place will be subject to meeting pre-course requirements which include an interview with a tutor and the completion of a written task.

Case study: Jannatul FerdousiJannat moved to England from Italy a year ago and had been learning English from a website before signing up to a Family Learning English course. She wants to be able to carry out everyday conversations, help her children with their homework and understand when they speak in English. The Family Learning English course has built Jannat’s confidence with her spoken English and she has now applied to do an ESOL course. She is also interested in being a volunteer, possibly in school or in retail, because she wishes to get a job in the future in retail or marketing.“Before starting the course I felt scared of talking to people but now weeks later I feel more confident about speaking English. Getting better at speaking and writing English is one of the most important things you can do for your children and it is good to be able to help your children with their homework.”

Case study: Farah DeebaFarah and her family moved from Pakistan to England in 2011. Educated to degree level in her home country, she had a good understanding of English but wanted to practise speaking, learn new skills and be able to support her child through school. She enrolled in the Introduction to Early Years Foundation Stage and Farah says she has developed new knowledge, which she is putting into practice with her son. Farah has been really supportive in class, often helping those who have less spoken English to “have a go” at saying sentences relating to the topic. Farah helped other students translate what they wanted to say from Urdu to English in a very sensitive way.“I’ve really enjoyed the courses, found the teachers to be excellent and knowledgeable and the learning atmosphere very relaxed. I feel more self-assured speaking English and am confident communicating outside of the classroom.”

Computers are an essential part of the workplace and daily life and we recognise that you want a course that suits your requirements.

ITQ Level 1This provision is made up from the ITQ range of units and qualifications. You can gain qualifications in the form of units, an award or a certificate. At skills checks we will identify which route is best for you and will discuss the unit choices in more detail. The ITQ provides an opportunity to learn a range of computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database, desktop publishing, e-mail and Internet using Microsoft Office version 2010. These qualifications are nationally recognised by employers and will help you to improve your existing job performance or find a new job. You must complete a short Introduction to ITQ to get ready to learn before starting an ITQ Level 1 qualification.

ITQ Award in Sage (Computerised accounts) and SpreadsheetsThis ITQ Award will enable you to gain skills in Sage line 50, Microsoft Excel 2010, Internet safety and one additional unit. The units will be accredited and will demonstrate how you can use your new skills in the work place. At skills check the suitability of this course will be discussed further. You must complete a short Introduction to ITQ to get ready to learn before starting this ITQ Level 1 qualification.

ITQ Sage Level 1 unitThis ITQ unit will enable you to gain initial skills in the Sage line 50 computerised accounts package. The unit will be accredited and the content that you cover on the course will enable you to demonstrate how you can use these new skills in the work place. You must complete a short Introduction to ITQ1 to get ready to learn before starting this Level 1 qualification.

ITQ Sage Level 2 unitThis level 2 ITQ unit will enable you to gain further skills in the Sage line 50 computerised accounts package. You must complete a short Introduction to Sage Level 2 ITQ to prepare you to get ready to learn before starting this ITQ Level 2 unit. Level 1 Award in Occupational Studies for the Workplace - Business Administration routeThis course is for you if you have IT skills and wish to develop them for use in the workplace in an Office/Business administration type role. The course will cover two units only that teach you some of the skills required to complete tasks in the modern office. You must complete a short Introduction to Occupational Studies to get ready to learn before starting this Level 1 Award qualification.

Level 1 Certificate in Occupational Studies for the Workplace - Business Administration routeThis course is for you if you have IT skills and wish to develop them for use in the workplace in an Office/Business administration type role. The course will teach you the skills required to complete tasks in the modern office, including filing skills, business meeting skills and how to work with colleagues and customers. You must complete a short Introduction to Occupational Studies to get ready to learn before starting this Level 1 qualification.

ITQ Level 2This course is for those who have a good level of ICT and who have relevant Level 1 ICT skills. You will develop your skills further and gain Level 2 ITQ units that may include, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint and Improving Productivity. You must complete a short Introduction to ITQ2 to get ready to learn before starting this Level 2 qualification.

Courses without a qualificationIntroduction to Computers FREE - start at the very beginning and learn how to switch on, start-up computers and how to use the mouse and keyboard. You will also learn basic word processing skills, how to use the Internet, printing and saving work. Limited or no ICT skills are needed to join this course.

Set up and Use e-mailThis 3 session short course will give you the skills to set up your own email account and learn the basics of emailing including; sending, receiving and replying to emails.

Presentations using PowerPointThis 6 session short course will give you the skills to plan and create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint. This presentation can then be used at interviews and modified to suit the post you are applying for.

Case study: Angela McCannAngela started her learning journey with the Service in 2014, when she completed an “Introduction to computers” course. She then went on to do an Entry 3 “Award in Life and Living Skills” in 2015 and IT Presentations to gain employment. She has recently completed an ITQ1 Award. Angela is currently doing Maths and English courses. She wanted to improve her confidence and skills in ICT and also so she could help her daughter – which she now can. The ICT sessions have also helped Angela with her current studies.“I can now read more at home and have found the skills learnt in English have helped my ICT, giving me confidence to move forward. I feel a real sense of achievement. I’ve really enjoyed my learning experience.”

Case study: Mohammed SarfrazMohammed has been studying with Lifelong Learning for more than 10 years. Since finishing a Computerised Accounts course he has been on literacy and numeracy courses and completed an ITQ1 computer course, where he learnt how to use Microsoft Office software. In September 2015 he started an ITQ2 qualification. During his journey he has learned to create templates, flyers, leaflets and spreadsheets and used his qualification in Computerised Accounts, and other courses, to help him set up his business as a freelance accountant.“The skills I have learnt are transferable to my job. I also feel I have the confidence to show friends how to use the skills I have learnt.”

Case Study: Ann KershawAnn started learning with us in 2013 when she was referred to do a course from Remploy. She completed an ‘Entry 2 Award in making progress’ and then progressed on to an ‘Entry 3 First Award in ICT’ course. In 2014, she did an ‘Email and Letter Writing’ course and then progressed onto a ‘Business Administration, Level’ course. Her most recent course is ITQ1 Award. Ann has also completed literacy and numeracy courses. Her aim to was use studying to help her get a job, but also, as a full time carer for a family member these courses have enabled Ann to get out of the house and meet people. With the skills Ann has learnt and the experience of caring for a family member, she feels like her whole life has changed. She has now got a part time job as a carer and she couldn’t be happier.“The tutors have been really friendly and I wouldn’t go anywhere else to learn.”

Enjoy learning the language and culture of another country in friendly, stimulating classes.

Learning a new language is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it needs time and a significant amount of motivation and effort on your part. You will need to do homework – it’s essential! Language learning is not a “quick-fix” process. You will gradually develop confidence and skills. You need patience and determination to make progress.

For beginners. You have no previous knowledge, although you may just know “hello/goodbye/thank you”. You will learn enough spoken and written language for everyday routine situations.

You are probably able to do the following in the present tense:• Ask for food and drink

in a bar. • Ask for a room

• Talk simply about yourself and your family

• Deal with simple shopping

• Ask for and understand simple directions

• Tell the time and date

You are probably already able to, with more confidence:

• Say what you did last week or on your last holiday

• Say what you are going to do next weekend

• Make arrangements for travel, restaurant and accommodation bookings

• Make arrangements face to face or on the phone

• Speak about a limited range of routine topics

You are probably able to talk with some confidence:

• About routine subjects like family, shopping, travel, work, leisure etc.

• To give opinions about them using some past and future tenses with some understanding of grammar

• Respond quickly to unpredictable situations

You want to be able to “get by” in the language, with some confidence. You will need to do one or two hours per week learning at home.

You would like to develop your speaking and writing skills in a wider range of situations. You want to increase your confidence. You will need to do 2+ hours per week learning at home.

You would like to be able to express opinions and give reasons and cope with increasingly unpredictable situations in the language.You want to build your confidence. You will need to do 2-3 hours per week learning at home.

You would like to further develop your skills and to build your confidence. You will need to do some extra hours learning at home each week.

We offer a range of courses and levels to suit your needs. Our beginners’ courses are divided into two 13 week terms over one year. Higher Intermediate and Advanced Language Conversation

Introduce you to the language and are intended for complete beginners.

Continue to build on the skills and knowledge of Year 1.

Are suitable for learners who have completed a Language Year 3 course or equivalent, such as GCSE. The levels of the Intermediate Conversation courses vary and a discussion with a member of the languages team is required before enrolment.

This level of learning is suitable for learners who have a knowledge of the language equivalent to A Level.

Language CoursesCourses run for 26 weeks in total, fees indicated are for 13 week terms – autumn/winter and spring/summer terms which make up the 26 week programme. The major focus is on spoken language, supported as necessary by listening, reading and writing. Years 1 to 3 include topics such as introductions, dates, time, food and drink, shopping, accommodation, directions and travel, services and emergencies. In conversation classes topics vary with the needs and interests of the group.For most beginners it is necessary to join the course at the start of Year 1 and progress through the different stages. It is recommended that you do not begin studying at the second term of a Year 1 class. However, if you have some language experience please contact the languages team for advice.

Case study: James BradleyJames now considers Spanish as his second language after completing three years of classes. He started classes as his girlfriend comes from Spain and decided that he should really learn the language if he was going to speak with her friends and family and play a bigger part in her family life. Because he had a basic understanding of the language he signed initially for a Year 2 Spanish class and has progressed to a Transition to Conversation class. “The best bit of the course though is that in the first lesson, the tutor asked for requests of things you would like to learn or be more confident in by the end of the year. This was very helpful because the people taking the course will have varied reasons for doing it and this way they can influence it to include what they want.Throughout the time I have been doing the course I have felt myself grow in confidence with my second language, and only when finished had I realised just how far I had come from what I started with. The tutors are extremely

helpful and take the time to ensure everyone understands the subject being discussed before moving on. Furthermore all the students are in the same place and at the same level so they are always full of support”.

Case study: Linda and Steve AdamsBeing able to enjoy life in the sun was one of the reasons Linda and Steve Adams started studying Spanish with Oldham Lifelong Learning Service.The couple have been visiting Nerja in Southern Spain for the past 13 years and intend to retire there when Steve hits retirement age in 2019.Although they have picked up a few words and phrases, they now want to hold conversations and understand Spanish to a good level to assist with this prospective move and, in the interim, to make their yearly trips to Nerja more enjoyable.After discussing prospective courses with staff they enrolled on Introduction to Spanish and have since moved on to Spanish Year 1.“Our confidence has vastly improved, in speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Our Spanish friends have noticed the difference over the course of the year. “It has also given us the opportunity to do something as a couple and study together. In fullIf your course fee is less than £70 you must make full payment at enrolment. Your position on the course is not secure until payment has been made.

By instalmentsIf your course fee amounts to £70 or more, we can accept payment in three equal instalments over three consecutive months via cash, cheque, debit or credit card. If you withdraw from your course later than one week before the course starts you will be charged the outstanding balance of the full cost of the course.

By employerIf your employer is paying for your course you must provide written confirmation on letter-headed paper from your employer. We will send them an invoice.

By telephone or onlineYou will be able to pay online or over the phone (by credit/ debit card only) if your course does not require pre-course advice and guidance and you are paying the full fee. Examination/accreditation feesCourses with a qualification (accredited courses) have an examination or accreditation fee. This fee is included in the course fee for the majority of courses. Where there are separate examination charges you will pay for these during the course. You will not be able to enrol onto any accredited courses unless you intend to achieve the award and complete the course. This is a requirement of our external funding agreement with the Skills Funding Agency. If you wish to do a course without a qualification there is a wide range of options in the listings where you enrol each term.

Books and equipmentYou may need stationery, textbooks or other materials for some subjects. Please refer to the course information sheet or ask your tutor at your first class before buying any items. You may be able to borrow books from the Library.

Concessionary statusLearners entitled to a concessionary rate do not pay any fees for qualification courses that are funded by the Skills Funding Agency. If you are in receipt of a benefit, proof of this must be shown when you enrol for your course.Please bring original documents as we are unable to accept photocopies. All our courses are for adults aged 19 years and over.Circumstances that qualify for a concessionary rate on qualificationcourseswithcodesbeginningwithletterV.You are:• in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance;• in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance (work-

If you withdraw from your courseYou will only receive a refund if you tell us no later than one week before the course starts that you wish to withdraw. If you withdraw after this you will not be entitled to a refund and if you are paying for your course by instalments you will be charged the outstanding balance of the full cost of the course. Your course is either part-funded or fully funded by the Skills Funding Agency and the European Social Fund. to help you now that you have chosen your courseGetting organised …• Make a note of your class day, time and location• Keep the receipt you were given when you paid for

your course and bring it to your first class.• Make a note of the telephone number of the centre

your class is based in, just in case you need to let us know if you will not be able to attend.

• Try to arrive a few minutes early at your first class. Important information is given then, such as whether you need to buy any books or equipment, or what will be provided for you. You will meet fellow learners for the first time and begin to get to know them.

• Over the first three weeks your tutor will carry out an induction programme to ensure you are fully briefed about your course content, health and safety procedures and to help you to settle in.

• Take a notepad and pen with you that you always use just for your class. Jot down all of your notes in it throughout your course and then everything will be kept in one place.

• Don’t invest in anything else before your first class, unless you are attending an arts and crafts or cookery class and have been advised to bring your own items (such as your own cloths for cookery).

• You might need to set additional time aside for working at home. Your tutor will tell you during induction of approximate time requirements, to enable you to organise your additional study time. For example, you may be given homework. You might also want to work on a project in your own time in addition to the time you spend in your class.
