“I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.”

My reflections on the feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, the Mother Church of all the Catholic churches in the world, stem from a wonderful dinner last Monday.

This was an exceptionally enjoyable evening because, often during the week, I have meetings or parish duties that keep me involved and don’t have the time for a dinner with friends. One of the things that made this dinner so wonderful was that Fr. Jacob Maurer, Fr. Dean Mbuzi, Fr. Brian Thompson, a young member of the staff and her husband, as well as the hosts were gathered together. The food was excel-lent and the conversation and interactions were lively, ranging from the serious to the silly. I often found myself laughing so hard that I had tears in my eyes.

At one point in the evening I realized that I was the oldest person in the room. It shocked me, though I am not quite sure why. It was a simple fact, but somehow it was a stark realization that even though I don’t feel old (most of the time, anyway) or think of myself as “old,” I am certainly heading in that direction.

As I write this, I am grateful for the young adults in that room; the three young priests at the beginning of their lives of service on behalf of God’s people; the young couple who are so on fire with love of God and the Catholic Church; the middle aged couple who hosted us, their sons and how their lived faith has touched so many lives and gives witness to the beauty of the Church. This is, in so many ways, a snap-shot of the life and history of the Church from its beginning.

As we celebrate the feast of St. John Lateran, we also celebrate the gift and history of the Catholic Church. As St. Paul reminds us in our second reading from I Corinthians 3:9-11, 16-17, “You are God’s build-ing…Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” I invite you to check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 811-870 to understand more fully the four “marks” of the Church.

During this month of November when we remember our beloved dead and pray for them, let us be especially mindful of our communion with them in Christ. Let us also reflect upon our communion with one another as we make our Stewardship Renewal and Sacrificial Giving Pledge for this coming year. I pray that we may realize anew that we are the living Body of Christ, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit and that together we are called to work to build the Kingdom of God here and now.

I am so grateful for your generosity all these years that has enabled us to do so much for the good of others and for this community of faith. Let us hold one another in prayer. Let us encourage one another to be generous in our financial giving as God is generous to us.

Lastly, I invite us all to be grateful for the dedication and service of all the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces. Tuesday is Veterans Day. It is important for us to pray for all who serve and have served on behalf of our country. Please take some time this week to acknowledge them and honor them. There is a special Veterans Day assembly and prayer at our parish school on Monday, November 10 at 1:30 P.M. Please join us if you can.

In Christ, I love you,

Our Vietnamese community continues to honor its patron, St. Martin de Porres, whose Feast Day was celebrated on November 3rd. Please join the community in prayers that St. Martin intercede for each of us before God’s throne, that we might live our lives faithfully in serving Him. This Sunday, November 9, the Vietnamese Community will reflect on St. Martin’s life in s short play at 1 pm at the Westside Chapel, followed by Mass at 1:30 pm. Everyone is welcome!

As today is the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, each of the readings relates in some way to churches — the buildings in which we worship. The Lateran Basilica is the official Church of Rome and the Pope, not St. Peter with which we tend to associate the Vatican.

The first reading from Ezekiel speaks of the temple and the holy, living waters which flow from it. Ezekiel 47 reminds us that what occurs inside the church building is incredibly important, the Eucharist, called in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the “source and summit of our Christian life.”

Churches and holy waters are a principal part of our Catholic faith. We enter the church through Baptism, and as we enter our Catholic churches, we find holy water to remind us of that Bap-tism and to prompt us to remember that we are in a holy place, a place where we gather as a community, united as the Body of Christ. We are the stewards of this church, this holy place where we can disregard the burdens of the world and join together to receive the life giving waters of the Word and the Eucharist. Yes, we are the church, but there is more to it than that. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians: “In him you are also being built together into a dwelling place for God.”

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE: PARISH GRANT TO ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL

St. Michael Parish currently supports the school through a direct grant, which covers approximately 22% of school expenses. These monies currently come from parish members’ Stewardship of Treasure contributions and represent the largest income source to the school, by far – other than tuition. For this current school year, the grant from the parish is $405,000. This grant helps keep tuition costs down for parents and helps the school as it strives for continued excellence in all its endeavors.

The amount of parish support is based on a matching grant practice: For every $1.00 given during a calendar year by a St. Michael School family to the regular Sunday offertory collection, the parish gives the school $1.90. There is no limit to the amount of gifts the parish will match, but should the grant reach a level of $302,860, all further donations are matched at a lesser rate of 50%.

HOW IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD CALLING YOUR NAME?

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based faith formation ministry for chil-dren ages 3-12. Part of a worldwide movement, children have been listening to God in this ministry at St. Michael for over 10 years. Children and adults gather weekly in small groups to use specially prepared materials to explore their relationship with God. There are many ways to learn about this ministry and to help it as well. Come and see!

AN INVITATION TO BOOKMAKING WORKSHOPS

CGS will offer FREE workshops to introduce the art of bookmaking Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 6 - 8 pm and Monday, Nov. 17 from 10 - 12 pm.

In this hands-on class participants will construct several sets of hardcover, thread-bound books to be used by the children in our ministry. All of the materials used in the workshop will go towards the construction of these sets, but each participant will leave with the knowledge and skills to continue personal works at home. Returning participants will continue construction of the book sets and practice skills already presented. This class is offered to persons aged 14 and older. Please reserve your space for either one or both session dates.

For more information about CGS or to register for either the program or the bookmaking workshop, contact Mary Trotter at [email protected] or (360) 292-7145.

The prepared CGS Atrium environment is a place of order and natural beauty. To maintain this, we seek arti-sans who are skilled at wood-working, painting, sculpting, and calligraphy to aid in the creation of specific works to be used by the children. This may include building small wood “environments” (very basic model-sized structures with walls and doorways) from detailed building plans provided. Or perhaps you are willing to offer your skills at sculpting, carving, or sew-ing small figures. There is also a need for a skilled hand to paint figures that have al-ready been made. Detailed guidelines and materials are provided and timelines are flexible. Contact Mary Trotter at [email protected].

Fr. Howell will explore the multiple ways that Jesus addressed and overcame stigma, a sign of disgrace, by welcoming people with illness back into the worshipping community. Mental illness, despite centuries of learning, is still perceived as a character flaw or a sign of weakness rather than a disease of the brain.

Sr. Joyce Cox, B.V.M. will present on how positive relationships providing patient under-standing and support are crucial and can be invaluable in the struggle with depression. Deacon Jim Decker will also present a pastoral response to mental illness.

In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to all of us, we gratefully acknowledge and salute:

Kathy Rayburn

Kathy volunteers her time and talent as Parish Nurse Coordinator and, in so doing, provide opportunities for us to take care of our health and for other nurses in the parish to share their gifts! Kathy coordinates our bi-annual blood drives, Blood Pressure Checks after Mass and, most recently, orga-nized, scheduled and advertised a “Women’s Self Defense” workshop here at the parish. Due to Kathy’s efforts, we have quite a contingent of Parish Nurses who give of their time. Kathy serves as an Usher at Sunday Mass and participates in Prime Timer events.

With deep gratitude, we thank you, Kathy!
