K eppel FELS has been awarded acontract by returning customer,Floatel International Ltd (Floatel) for

a 500-men accommodation semisubmersible(semi) vessel. It is expected to be delivered byend December 2010.

The new accommodation semi, the KFELSSSAU 3600, has been designed to operate inregions outside the North Sea. It is the secondcontract from Floatel. The first was a newgeneration DSS20NS DP3, designed to suit theharsh conditions of the North Sea, awarded toKeppel FELS in April this year.

“The world’s demand for semisubmersibleaccommodation vessels is presently strongerthan the current dedicated fleet of 19 units cansatisfy. Floatel is positioning itself to leveragethis attractive market opportunity with a newfleet of customised vessels suited to variousoperating conditions,” said Erland Bassoe,Chairman of Floatel.

“Keppel FELS has proven to be the most reliableand versatile shipyard. I am confident that theyare the right partners to support Floatel in ourfleet expansion programme,” he said.

“Floatel has given us their vote of confidencewith the award of a second accommodation rigcontract in a span of less than six months. Thisis a partnership built on trust, and we will seeto it that Keppel delivers quality solutions ontime and within budget to meet the needs ofour valued customers,” said CH Tong, MD/COOof Keppel O&M.

Designed by Keppel O&M’s DeepwaterTechnology Group, the six-column unit carriesaccommodation for 500 persons complete withfull recreational facilities. It is cost effective andcapable of operating alongside fixed platforms,

complemented by a fully redundant DynamicPositioning System, a high crane capacity andfire fighting capabilities.

In 2005, Keppel FELS delivered Safe Concordia,an accommodation semi of similar design tosimilar specifications for 400 persons.

Floating accommodation platforms are neededto provide additional living quarters for drillingand production personnel. Such support isneeded during hook-up and commissioning inthe development phase, for maintenance andupgrading during the production phase, as wellas for decommissioning.

“As more E&P activities move further offshoreand into deeper waters, we expect demand forfloating accommodation units to beencouraging,” said CH Tong.

Built to the similar design of Safe Concordia, the second accommodationsemi built for returning customer Floatel will be home for up to 500 men

World’s first Floating Drilling andProduction facility

All hands on deck when it comes to keeping safety records on Azurite

K eppel Shipyard was recentlyawarded a conversion contract, worth around S$100 million

by Prosafe Production Pte Ltd (Prosafe)for the conversion of a tanker into aFloating, Drilling, Production, Storageand Offloading facility (FDPSO). Thiswill be the world’s first convertedFDPSO.

Keppel Shipyard has started theconversion of a Very Large Crude Carrier(VLCC) size tanker into an FDPSOconstructed with a moonpool used fordrilling purposes. It will have the drillingpackage modules and derrick integratedinto the FDPSO. The provision of thedrilling packages will be by Prosafe’sclient.

Work on the vessel is expected to becompleted by late 2008.

Nelson Yeo, ED of Keppel Shipyard said,“We are excited at the prospect of buildingthe world’s first FDPSO for our long-timecustomer Prosafe. The FDPSO conceptrepresents a cost-efficient solution fordrilling and producing in deepwaterfields.”

When completed, the FDPSO will havean oil storage capacity of about 1,300,000bbls. Its gas compression capacity will be18 MMscfd and its production capacitywill be 40,000 bopd.

Meanwhile, the more than 1100 pairs ofhands working on the Azurite FDPSOsuccessfully helped the project reach a safetymilestone of one million-man hours workedwithout any lost time incident (LTI).

The safety habits adopted by all thoseworking on Azurite ensured that everyoneof the 1100 employees working on this

project not only kept themselves safe buttheir colleagues as well.

Abu Bakar, GM (Operations) of KeppelShipyard praised the teams involvedsaying, “The excellent cooperationbetween Prosafe and Keppel Shipyard hasbeen essential to this achievement. Keyto this open communication and closepartnership is trust and confidence.Having worked on eight previous projectstogether over the last 10 years, I thinkI can safely say that we complement eachother very well.

“On this project, together with oursubcontractors, we made sure that weinvolved all our contractors in the safetyaspects of the work from the safetybriefings to the area walks. As we all know, this is a very busy period and this makesour safety achievement even moreremarkable.”

T he dry tree semisubmersible(semi) is an innovative conceptthat applies proven deepwater

technologies. It offers small in-placemotions, large open deck areas, docksidecommissioning, and minimum offshorehookup.

From tradition to innovation

Until now, the two deepwater hull formscapable of supporting top-tensioned risers(TTRs) have been the spar and the tensionleg platform (TLP). For production depthsexceeding 5,000 ft, present TLP designsencounter challenges with tendon designand installation. The spar is the solecandidate for production beyond thisdepth.

FloaTEC’s newly developed dry tree semisare alternatives to the spar for deepwaterproduction. These innovative deepwaterfloater designs have the motions of a sparand the functionality of a semi. Figure 1shows two of the company’s new designs, the ESEMI II (E- Semi) and the truss semi(T-Semi). These dry tree semis havesimilar design philosophies. The maindifference between the designs is theinstallation method.

The truss for the truss semi can beinstalled at the deployment site or nearshore in a water depth sufficient toposition the truss under the hull. Thisinstallation approach requires aninstallation vessel.

The second method for installing thetruss section is to set the truss on thesea bottom, ballast the semis over thetruss, then pull the truss up into thehull for connection. This operationcould be carried out without the aid of a

Dry tree semisubmersible designfor deepwater floaters

vessel. Both methods provide low-riskmating.

The ESEMI II is a self-installing versionof the dry tree semi. This design featuresthe single heave plate installed docksideunder its keel allowing the semi to betransported to the installation site withthe plate retracted. Once moored on site, the plate would be lowered into positionand secured. This design is easilyreversible.

How the dry tree semi works

The primary design objective is tominimize heave motions. Figure 2compares the heave response of aconventional semi, a spar, and a dry treesemi. These curves are called the“response amplitude operators” (RAOs).They show the unit’s heave responseper unit wave amplitude as a function ofwave period.

The traditional semi’s response curves arecharacterised by a small rise at the lowerperiods. At approximately 12 seconds, theRAO falls to a near zero value called the“cancellation period.” Above this period, the RAO increases steeply to a resonantresponse at a higher period. Thiscancellation period occurs where thehydrodynamic forces on the pontoons arepractically equal to the forces on thecolumns, and the heave responsetherefore tends to zero. The conventionalsemi cannot be used to support dry trees.

Without the heave plate, the semi has acancellation period of about 12 seconds. The RAO above this period is very high, and the resonance period falls within thewave energy period, which causes a largeheave response. When the heave plate isattached, the cancellation period isincreased to approximately 23 seconds, which is well above the range of waveenergy periods.

Design advantages

The semi has a large open deck area, which offers a number of operationaladvantages compared to the spar.

One advantage is greater flexibility in thewellbay layout. The dry tree semi caneasily accommodate rectangular layouts. These layouts reduce the span of the skidbeams for a rig, which reduces thespanning structural weight and lowers thecentre of gravity.

Another advantage the semi offers is loweraccelerations at the drilling deck.Horizontal accelerations induced by pitchat this elevation are larger on the spar thanthey are on the dry tree semi. As a result, drilling operations can continue on thedry tree semis in conditions that wouldnormally suspend operations on a spar.

Faster delivery and commissioning

The dry tree semi offers a number ofconstruction, delivery and costadvantages. A comparison of thedistribution of durations for each majoractivity carried out in a deliverydemonstrates the relative advantages. These are illustrated graphically in Figure3. The graph compares the duration ofeach activity, indicated as a percentage ofthe total time required to deliver eachsystem.

The graph also shows that topsidesconstruction takes about 63% of the timerequired and are also on the critical path.Spar hull construction takes less time thanthe dry tree semis, which introducesflexibility to the construction schedule. The critical difference is the amount ofdockside commissioning compared tooffshore commissioning.

Only 1% of the spar commissioning takesplace at dockside, while 10% is carriedout offshore. The opposite is true for thedry tree semi, which allows 7% of thedelivery time to be spent at the dock andonly about 1% offshore. Costs for offshorework can be 1.8 times more expensivethan similar dockside work because of theadditional equipment, manpower andlogistics required.

Timing is everything

The dry tree semi is a practical solutionfor deepwater development andproduction, offering advantages in termsof fabrication, delivery, and operations. The tight rig market has limited operators’choices for deepwater productionsystems. Assuming analyst Douglas-Westwood is accurate in its prediction thatby 2011 more than US$18 billion will bespent on deepwater operations, theindustry definitely needs more designslike the dry tree semi.

It was not a dusk-to-dawn rave party butACTIVE (All Companies or CommunitiesTogether In Various Exercises) Day at KeppelFELS. In line with the company’s commitmentto workplace health, ACTIVE Day encouragesits employees to make exercise a habit.

ACTIVE Day proved to be popular among itsparticipants. James Chia, from Marketingdepartment, shared, “ACTIVE Day highlightsthe importance of having regular exercisesand proper diets – elements of a healthylifestyle. Contrary to beliefs that it was a typicalroutine, the morning mass workout actuallyturned out to be both fun and enjoyable!”

CB Choo, Chairman/CEO of Keppel O&M,said, “It has been a very busy time for all of us.In order for us to stay alert, productive andefficient, at home and at work, we must exerciseregularly.

“Do not let ACTIVE Day be a one-off event. For those who have not started exercisingregularly, let it be the beginning.”

Five fitness instructors were engaged to lead inthe high-energy morning workout held on15 December 2007. CB Choo, together withKeppel FELS’ senior management and unionleaders joined the employees who participatedin the event.

Farahdila Nordin, Project Secretary of KeppelFELS, enthused, “I had a lot of fun! The physicalinstructor was very good and he kept the spiritof the people high by interacting with us. Atone point, he jumped down from the stage and‘high-fived’ us! We should have more ACTIVEDays!”
