è costretta a fare i conti.
In
Ognuno deve mettercela tutta. Perché la partita che
siamo chiamati a giocare è sempre più difficile. Ma vincere, in
questa situazione, diventa ancor più appagante.
TEven if, as an entrepreneur, I do not believe
in ‘virtual reality’ and every day I am used to
contending with ‘real reality’, that requires de-
cisions to be made, questions to be answered,
problems to be solved, and choices to be made, I am con-
vinced that the way I approach things can make the differ-
ence in outcome good or bad. In particular, I am referring
to the attitude that seems to prevail from all sides towards
the crisis that the world economy has unfortunately had
to face for the past two years. This attitude tends to make
exclusively a negative assessment of the situation and
believes it is a calamity we are forced to live with. Well,
events that at first appear to show themselves as problems
can actually be viewed another way. It is much better, to
create an opportunity out of a problem. The evolution of
mankind - and of the economic development of society -
is marked by problems and difficulties that have become
opportunities for growth, once overcome. It is not a lin-
ear path, but happens in stages, each one being a ‘leap for-
ward’, as solutions are found to the original problem. It is
the same, even in the current difficulties. A crisis of value
more than economy, which demands from each entrepre-
neur the ability to gather together the resources to im-
prove product, process, and the level of service offered by
himself and his employees. Investing in people has never
been so important. We have been doing that since the be-
ginning at OMET, relying on professionally qualified and
highly motivated people, full of courage and the passion
to overcome challenges. Like a football team, a company
expresses itself best by the way it plays the game. Every-
one in the team needs to give his or her best performance,
because the match we are playing is difficult and impor-
tant. But, that makes winning even more rewarding!

allow them to improve quality and produc-
tion performances, and reduce costs, will
face future with optimism».
Today, OMET’s technology is proving
to be more and more groundbreaking
worldwide. The innovations presented at
this Open House for label and package
printing testify to that as much as the in-
terest shown by the so many leading Ital-
ian printing companies who attended the
demos, and the numerous customers and
prospects who came to Lecco from Ger-
many, Austria, Turkey, Poland, Russia,
Belgium, Romania, and Australia. The live
print demos featured three OMET presses:
the X-Flex 430, universally known as a
technologically top of the range press for
printing narrow web labels; the Varyflex-
F1 530, a combination print platform for
packaging; and the brand new Varyflex-F1
850, with an 850 mm web width that opens
new possibilities for those who want to in-
vest in the packaging sector.
Keen interest was shown in the presenta-
tional sessions on labels and packaging,
given by OMET’s technical-sales staff.
Both of these markets show a trend of
strong and continual growth. In particular,
the self-adhesive sector proves once again
to be leading. «The technology of self-adhe-
sive,» explained Marco Calcagni, OMET’s
Sales Director «is growing 10 times faster
each year than other labelling methods to-
day. This phenomenon is made possible
by more versatile labelling systems, thinner
materials and faster applications. We are
also seeing a growing use of plastic contain-
ers instead of traditional glass bottles, and a
diffusion of transparent film labels because
of their appeal on wrapped products».
Such an evolution determines changes for
the converter: small runs increase to fol-
low the changes in market demand and
the launch of new products; the pressure
on delivery and supply chains grows; also
dotto al lavoro dei propri clienti, permettendo
loro di migliorare le performance qualitative
e produttive e riducendo i costi, può guardare
con ottimismo al futuro.
In effetti, oggi la tecnologia OMET sta confer-
mandosi sempre più all’avanguardia a livello
mondiale.
mania, Austria, Turchia, Polonia, Russia, Belgio,
Romania e Australia. Tre, in particolare, le demo
presentate, su altrettanti impianti OMET: la X-
Flex 430, riconosciuta ormai universalmente
Entrambi questi
mercati si presentano in forte e costante cresci-
ta. In particolare, il settore dell’autoadesivo si
conferma ancora leader. La tecnologia dell’au-
toadesivo – spiega Marco Calcagni, Direttore
commerciale OMET - oggi cresce ogni anno 10

special labels are required to be included
in the customer’s sales portfolio. In ad-
dition, on one side there is a continuous
move towards innovation of substrates,
while on the other is a concern for sus-
tainability and ecological responsibility.
«These features can be attributed to our
machines, especially the X-Flex,» explained
Calcagni, «as it uses all-in-line technology
with minimal changeover times, and offers
very low start up waste. It is a multifunc-
tional machine that handles all kinds of
materials and guarantees flexibility in print
technologies that include interchangeable
flexo and screen units, die-cutting, emboss-
ing units, and delivery and rewind or stack-
ing systems».
If one considers flexible packaging, the
reduction of printed volumes, run lengths
and tight margins makes narrow web
presses more attractive than traditional
larger format lines. The remarkable prog-
ress achieved by flexo printing, and its as-
sociated low cost base, when compared to
rotogravure, make this technology more

bassissimi scarti d’avviamento.
ginalità tende a far preferire macchine a banda

widely popular. But next to this phenom-
enon, the demand for combined press-
es (using flexo, offset, rotogravure and
screen) is noticeable. There is also a desire
to perform inline processes such as lami-
nation and cold-foil to broaden the prod-
uct range, reduce delivery times, even for
special jobs, and increase profitability.
OMET’s VaryFlex-F1 850 fulfills these
requirements. Its combination platform
allows the creation of a custom-made
machine that meets the printer’s specific
requirements. It can also be extended in a
simple way and offers short start up times,
if needed, with the extraordinary advan-
tage of interchanging print technologies
(UV flexo, solvent flexo, water flexo, roto-
gravure, screen, and offset) and finishing
(sliding hot-foil, sliding cold-foil, Twin-
cut die-cutting, hologram application, ho-
lography lamination, and embossing).
The VaryFlex-F1 platform, like X-Flex,
offers a solution of great interest to an in-
novative segment that is growing quickly
and continually. That market is shrink
sleeves, which today represents 8% of the
total label market, and is growing at a rate
of 4.7% a year. Shrink sleeves are flexible
and simple to customise.
VaryFlex-F1, like X-Flex, allows for the
printing of conventional films, such as
PVC, PETG, OPS, as well as innovative
sleeves, and guarantees a complete print
process, including roll cutting to the fin-
ished format size. Easy to use, this allows
automatic retrieval of print data for each
phase and automatic roll loading/unload-
ing to speed up the process. Print quality
is exceptional thanks to the perfect lon-
gitudinal and transversal register, made
possible by the system Vision-1. The pre-
register, when the machine is not running,
contributes towards reducing waste.
d’applicazione, ridurre i tempi di consegna an-
A rispondere a tali richieste è OMET
Varyflex-F1 850.
specifiche esigenze dello stampatore, espandibile
all’acqua, rotocalco, serigrafia, offset) e di finitura
(hot-foil scorrevole, cold foil scorrevole, fustella-
tura con Twin-cut, applicazione ologrammi, la-
minazione olografia e goffratura).
Ma la piattaforma Varyflex-F1, così come X-
Flex, è in grado di offrire soluzioni di grande
interesse anche per un segmento innovativo in
forte e costante aumento, quello delle shrink sle-
eves. Varyflex-F1, così come X-Flex, consentono

Labelmakers, the largest Australian label
converter, is the first group to order the brand
new VaryFlex-F1 850 mm (33”), launched at
the OMET’s recent open house as an ideal
press for package printing, from flexible film
to light carton. The final testing, which was
concluded at the end of July, marks an im-
portant step for the Lecco based company
because it demonstrates that its technology
is now able to conquer new product and
market applications all over the packaging
world.

with packaging converters' requirements in
mind, whether they are label printers or sheet
or web converters. It is a press that can print
jobs normally produced on other types of ma-
chine, and offers exceptional performance on
short run and fast changeover work. It delivers
excellent print quality and also offers the possi-
bility of inserting rotogravure, screen, and hot
foil units inline. It is perfect for label convert-
ers who want to move into shrink sleeves, flex-
ible film, and IML packaging, but who want to
restrict the impact this has on the operational
and production costs in their factory. These
include a small footprint, a short training pro-
gramme for operators, and low pre-press costs.
At the same time it offers a unique opportu-
nity for those packaging printers who need a
narrower web machine to complement their
larger CI or sheet fed carton presses to fulfil
their customers' special requirements.
For the Labelmakers Group, the purchase of
the new 9-colour UV Flexo VaryFlex-F1 850,
with two interchangeable rotogravure units,
is a strong indication of the machine’s flex-
ibility. This is highlighted by the exception-
ally wide range of labels being converted at
the company’s production sites in Victoria.
Labelmakers’ headquarters is a brand new
22,500-sqm facility in Somerton, from where
it covers markets in South and Western Aus-
tralia, as well as in New Zealand.
Labelmakers contacted OMET thanks to
Tim Stafford of UPP, new OMET agent for
Australia and New Zealand.

stabilimenti produttivi localizzati nelle regioni

Established in 1987, the Labelmakers Group
core business is in self-adhesive labels, large
volume wrap-around labels, and shrink
sleeves. Its great production variety is
matched by an equally unrivalled degree of
specialisation.
The Group is made up of three divisions, con-
nected by an integrated delivery and service
chain. For instance, while the Wine Division
in Regency Park has been specialising in la-
bel production for the flourishing Australian
wine industry since 1989, and utilising high
quality and special finishing techniques, the
RFID & VIP Division in Somerton under-
takes the important production of complete
bar-code labelling solutions. Self-adhesive
labels and shrink sleeve production is also
carried out in Somerton. The shrink-sleeve
segment is currently enjoying strong growth
because it offers the opportunity to brand
the product all round, attracting consumer
attention, and giving the best on-shelf ap-
pearance.

chette autoadesive, etichette wrap-around
in grandi volumi e shrink sleeve. L'estrema
varietà della produzione si coniuga con una
ugualmente estrema specializzazione.
Labelmakers Group è infatti strutturato in tre
distinte divisioni, tra loro collegate in modo
sinergico.
a barre. Sempre a Somerton è concentrata l’at-
tività di produzione delle etichette autoadesive
e delle shrink sleeve, segmento quest’ultimo in
forte crescita in quanto esse offrono l'opportu-
nità di brandizzare a 360 gradi un prodotto,
conquistando l'attenzione del consumatore e
garantendo ad esso la massima presenza visi-
va sullo scaffale.

In a complex process like converting, the final result is the combination of
performance obtained in each single phase. This is particularly true when
we talk about innovation: to obtain the best performance, it is essential
that innovation is spread throughout the entire process, improving not
only the print process but also ancillary units.
That’s why OMET has developed a new inline die cutting unit to make
this process easier and significantly reduce management costs. Known as
the MonoTwin-Cut, the new unit uses a single magnetic cylinder for all
label sizes, thereby eliminating the need for the converter to hold a range
of different and expensive tooling. The process is simple and effective:

Ciò vale in partico-
the MonoTwin-Cut rotates at constant speed during the cutting phase,
which, thanks to its servo drive, makes it possible to accelerate and de-
celerate in perfect synchrony with the machine speed for the subsequent
cutting process. Especially designed for the label market, OMET’s new die
cutting unit is already available for the X-Flex series. Its register precision
and production speed make the MonoTwin-Cut ideal for all types of label
and any length of print run, offering numerous benefits to the converter.
Potential production problems associated with late deliveries of tooling
and changeable tool quality are eliminated at the outset. The unit is sim-
ple and intuitive to use, requires no lifting tackle for heavy cylinders, and
completes a changeover by simply replacing the cutting sheet. Operatio-
nal control of the unit, web tension, and waste extraction is all carried
out via the main operator control board, while pre-register and register
control is fully automatic.

customers, and their customers, the end users
and final consumers, a feeling of novelty and
uniqueness. This also requires us to continually
update and train our staff.»
Today, Eurostampa's labels are seen every day
in homes, in coffee bars, restaurants and su-
permarkets in over 30 countries worldwide.
«We sell all over the world,» continued Gian-
mario Cillario: «and this is a great advantage.
Because we work in so many countries and for
such important multinational and large groups,
we have a better insight than many of our com-
petitors. This allows us to secure information
and knowledge earlier so that we can antici-
pate trends, fashions and new market require-
ments.»
Operating as a group, Eurostampa is currently
split into two production sites. In addition to
the original location in Bene Vagenna, in the
Province of Cuneo, there is a second factory in

Cincinnati, Ohio (Eurostampa North Ameri-
ca), which caters for the requirements of the
American market, and is supported by two
sales offices, one in Mexico, and the other in
the USA. European sales offices are located in
Paris, Barcelona, Sofia, St Petersburg, Frank-
furt and Glasgow.
«Currently, 55% of our production is exported,»
explained Cillario, «and the most important
markets, after Italy, are Great Britain and North
America.» The reason is that this is where the
large groups, which are prestigious custom-
ers of Eurostampa, are all concentrated. In the
past three years, the Cuneo based company
has become involved with a more diverse
market, that of wine labels, where the average
run lengths are typically 50,000 - 100,000 la-
bels. «This is a challenge that gives us a lot of
satisfaction, because we can offer a high level of
service,» he added.
Specialising in paper based self-adhesive
labels, Eurostampa uses most of the print
techniques available, including: offset, flexo,
screen, foil and embossing, as well as UV var-
nishes, metallic, luminescent and wood inks,
and hologram application. These are available
for all customers serving the wine & spirits,
RTD, confectionary, foodstuff, alcohol, cos-
metics, and soft drinks markets, as well as for
sleeves and carton production.
«We continue to invest in technology,» ex-
plained Gianmario Cillario, «because for the
new markets we are studying, we need to offer
the latest technology and detailed consultation,
which we do through Eikon. This is a com-
rio – E i mercati più importanti, dopo l’Italia,
sono quello inglese britannico e quello nord
americano».
An-
sta dando numerose soddisfazioni, grazie in
particolare al servizio che possiamo offrire».
Specializzata nelle etichette carta e colla e au-
toadesive, Eurostampa infatti utilizza le più
diverse tecniche di stampa (offset, flexografia,
serigrafia, impressione a lamina e rilievo), im-
piegando anche vernici UV, inchiostri metalli-
ci, luminescenti e wood, lamine ed ologrammi.
Tutto in funzione del cliente e del settore appli-
cativo: wine & spirits, RTD, cioccolato, alimen-
tari, birre, cosmetica, acque minerali e tubi e
astucci.
«I nostri utili sono costantemente reinvestiti
in tecnologia. – continua Gianmario Cilla-
e poter proporre sempre nuove tecnologie,
nuove carte, nuove solu-
zioni. Vogliamo poter es-
sere un vero partner per il
nostro cliente, offrendo a
ciascuno una risposta su

pany we established to research and develop
new activities and offer the newest technology,
products, and solutions. We aim to be a real
partner to our customers, offering each one a
customised solution.»
«For instance,» he explained, «the label mar-
ket is turning more towards self adhesive these
days. But we need to be able to go beyond what
is in fashion and explain that the wet glue la-
bel is still the best answer to many questions.
In particular, I am thinking of recto-labels that
are required in over 280 different variations.
Believe me, our customers really appreciate this
level of consultancy.»
Consultancy, research and technology, then,
and the cooperation with OMET that plays
such an important role in completing the cir-
cle. «We had always used Swiss technology in
the past,» concluded Cillario, «and only recent-
ly acquired our first OMET press. It is an X-Flex
430, with 13 stations and three laminating units.
I have to say that the quality of work it produces
is more than satisfactory when compared to our
other production lines. The OMET machine im-
presses with its start-up speed and the ease with
which it achieves register. This saves paper and
ink, which are two of the parameters we need to
keep under control, especially with frequent job
changes. It is a challenge that OMET accepted
and has proved capable of meeting.»
varianti diverse.
Consulenza, ricerca e tecnologia, dunque. E
la collaborazione con OMET, in questo circo-
lo virtuoso, assume un ruolo importante: «Da
sempre utilizziamo tecnologia svizzera. – rac-
conta Cillario – E solo recentemente abbiamo
saper accettare e vincere».

“Fortune favours the brave” says a famous
proverb. This describes OMET very well - al-
ways willing to take on the most ambitious
and difficult challenges, and banking on the
extraordinary skills of its Research & Develop-
ment division to provide the market with in-
novative answers.
Recently, the Lecco based narrow web press
manufacturer secured an important order to
make the ‘Scratch and Win’ tickets used by the
second largest lottery in the Chinese market.
biziose e difficili, puntando sulle straordinarie

«Being entrusted with such a contract is very
satisfying and brings a great deal prestige to our
company,» said OMETs founder and President,
Angelo Bartesaghi.
«The high level of technology required by this
machine to meet stringent quality standards
made this order an important opportunity for
growth in this market sector. The world produc-
tion of cards for ‘Scratch and Win’ and lotter-
ies is one that has seen strong and continuous
growth on an international level,» he added.
Suppliers with the ability to manufacture a ma-
chine for this kind of work are few and far be-
tween, especially with regard to the technical
competence to resolve the problems likely to
be encountered in meeting the required high
quality standard of performance demanded by
this customer, which is part of a leading inter-
national group.
«Tests with special inks were carried out on
the OMET press, and it met all the required pa-
rameters,» explained OMET’s Sales Director
Marco Calcagni. «The customer recognised the
quality of our technology throughout the nego-
tiation, as well as our management skills in han-
dling the launch of such a valuable project. They
particularly complimented OMET’s production
team for the work it carried out in defining all
the technical, electronic and mechanical terms
and specifications,» he added. The installation

internazionale.
In particolare è sta-

combina differenti tecnologie: flexo UV, flexo
base acqua, offset UV e digitale ink-jet.
valore intrinseco molto elevato, ben superiore
identificati tramite codice a barre, memorizzati,
eliminati e poi ristampati.
Simili configurazioni si prestano comunque an-
lotterie e giochi locali e carte telefoniche o ricari-
cabili. Si tratta di progetti specifici che permetto-
no di personalizzare soluzioni dedicate per ogni
esigenza. A questo proposito, a luglio, OMET
ha tenuto un importante open-house per la
dimostrazione della sua tecnologia, a
cui sono stati invitati clienti da
tutto il mondo.
which is 56 metres long. The line is capable of
running at speeds up to 200m/min on triple
shift operation. This will guarantee the volume
of tickets needed to supply such a large mar-
ket as China that is fast growing and very well
developed in the games and gaming sectors
of the market. The press is really a print and
game management integrated system, com-
bining different technologies: UV flexo, water
base flexo, UV offset and digital ink jet. It is a
complex and comprehensive tool for security
printing in the instant lottery sector, where
even though the product is relatively simple to
produce, it still has a very high intrinsic value,
far greater than paper money itself. Printing
is 100% inspected to guarantee that no error,
double, or missing ticket reaches the market-
place. That’s why the tickets must be individu-
ally monitored, identified through a barcode,
stored, destroyed, and then reprinted. OMET’s
technology handles the entire process, from
conception of the game and printing, right
up to the final safety control in the finishing
processes of the various versions required.
Similar, or simpler configurations are also suit-
able for local lottery and game production, or
telephone or scratch up cards. While talking
about projects requiring customised solutions
for special applications, OMET held an Open
House on this subject in July to show off its lat-
est technology. Customers from all over the
world were invited to participate.

base it established in Sydney in 1958. This
specialisation has made the company one of
the main suppliers to the Australian market,
with significant export sales to Asia, New
Zealand, and the entire Pacific region.
The strength of the company is in its organ-
isation. Still a family owned and managed
business, Van Dyke has structured itself to
be extremely flexible, and to offer the cus-
tomer strong technical support to find the
best solution for any specific requirement.
These capabilities are based on the compa-
ny's know-how, which has been developed
over half a century, and a ‘can do’ attitude
that has led it into new markets. With a
more diversified production range to offer,
Van Dyke has tapped into innovative niche
areas where ‘added value’ is high.
From wet glue to self-adhesive labels,
printed in up to eight colours with optional
laminating, hot foil printing, embossing,
and varnishing, Van Dyke has extended
its product range into new and demanding
markets. These include wraparounds and
IML labels, which the company first intro-
duced in Australia for the plastic injection
and blow mould industries. They are ap-
plied to containers and lids to become an
integral part of the product. Heat sealable
yoghurt and margarine lids, or packaging
and stands for point-of-sale purposes are
other markets.
Van Dyke handles all its own pre-press in-
house, while a sophisticated management
control system constantly monitors the en-
tire process cycle.
Recently, with development of significant
new products in packaging, particularly
those utilising lightweight films, Van Dyke
decided to move into flexo printing to al-
low it to offer almost any form of packag-
ing that its customers require. Most of the
company’s existing customers are used to
roll printed packaging, so this new facility
gives Van Dyke the opportunity to become
a one-stop supplier.
After more than a year of extensive re-
search, Van Dyke made the decision to
vande.
l’esclusivo know-how aziendale, maturato in
vato valore aggiunto.
Alle etichette applicabili a colla e a quelle au-

invest in an OMET X-Flex 430. The deci-
sion highlighted the company’s need for a
flexible machine that could handle a vari-
ety of products from self-adhesive labels to
lightweight films. Maximum flexibility was
essential, because the Australian company
was aiming to develop a new business sec-
tor, without actually knowing its specific
requirements.
OMET’s cutting-edge technology will fu-
ture-proof Van Dyke’s investment, as well
as provide the company with an extremely
operator-friendly machine. This was essen-
tial because Van Dyke had no press opera-

quale fornitore "one stop".
A far propendere l’azienda australiana verso
leggero.

stitute of Packaging Design and Graphics.
The institute, located at Clemson University
in Clemson, SC, serves as OMET’s North
American press demonstration and training
center. The unique seminar brought togeth-
er 83 industry professionals—ranging from
packaging-prepress experts and converters
to label printers and consumer-packaged
goods makers—for a hands-on experience
in the entire shrink-film decorating process.
Attendees saw how two challenging bottle
shapes were designed, imaged, printed,
seamed and shrunk into a finished product
they were able to take home.
According to Steve Leibin, OMET sales
Manager for Matik, Inc., «This was the first
time that any seminar actually demonstrated
the entire shrink process from initial design
to finished product, providing the attendees
an unprecedented level of hands-on training.
An interesting thing as to the make-up of the
converter/printers: There were some experi-
enced shrink-label converters in attendance
just to see what was new.»
Among the converters and label printers
at the seminar were major industry names
such as Multi-Color Corp., American Fuji-
Seal, Exopack, Sealed Air Corp., Hammer
Packaging, Outlook Group and Label Tech-
nologies.
The OMET Varyflex-F1 350 press printed
two different jobs on clear 50-micron PVC
shrink film (supplied by Klöckner-Pen-
taplast), demonstrating the press’s rapid-
changeover capabilities, the very low waste
(less than 200 feet of start-up material) of
the “Vision” fully automatic register system
and the exceptional print quality and stabil-
ity. The first job was a four-color golf-ball
label for a small, round bottle, and the sec-
ond job was a seven-color green-tea label
for a wavy shampoo bottle. Using 1,200-lpi
Harper Corp. of America anilox rolls, the
green-tea label showed off its 20-micron-
dot, expanded-gamut printing as well as
the amazing print quality of EskoArtwork’s

Before You Shrink”, tenuto dal 29 al 31 mar-
zo scorso presso il Sonoco Institute of Packa-
ging Design and Graphics. L'istituto, situato

up to 600 fpm (190 mpm). The live print
jobs, switching from 4CP to 7CP, also dem-
onstrated the Varyflex press’s quick-change
ink cassettes and print sleeves.
«The shrink-label industry has a relatively
quiet voice in the label marketplace,» says
Matthew Dudas, market development man-
ager for Eastman Chemical Co., a supplier
of shrink-film resin, and one of the OMET
Seminar speakers. «There’s about a 40:1 ra-
tio of pressure-sensitive to shrink-label print-
ers in North America, but shrink offers the
best potential canvas for making a quick-hit
emotional connection with consumers at the
retail level.»
Consumer research shows that about 35
percent of store purchases occur simply
because the product “caught the customer’s
eye.” And 70 percent of brand decisions are
made in-store, Dudas explains; not which
products a consumer will buy but which
particular brand, and shrink labeling makes
brands stand out. All end markets are po-
tential hot spots for shrink labels, Dudas
says, including health and beauty aids,
foods, beverages, healthcare and household
products.
Several other speakers rounded out OMET’s
American Fuji-Seal, Exopack, Sealed Air
Corp., Hammer Packaging, Outlook Group
and Label Technologies.
pletamente automatico "Vision 1" e dell'ec-
etichette», sostiene Matthew Dudas, manager
rio. «Il rapporto tra gli stampatori di etichet-
te shrink sleeve in espansione e shrink sleeve
patto emotivo immediato sui consumatori a
livello di vendita al dettaglio».
Le ricerche sui consumi indicano infatti che
circa il 35% degli acquisti nei grandi magaz-
zini avviene semplicemente perché il prodot-
to "cattura l'occhio del cliente."
chette shrink fanno emergere i marchi. Tutti

Among them: Will Schretzman, vice presi-
dent of contract packaging at Verst Group.
He provided a step-by-step description of
how to properly size a sample shrink label
to account for shrink compensation and
distortion. Ron Ryback, president of Ry-
back & Ryback Consulting, Inc., has more
than 50 years of hands-on flexible-pack-
aging industry experience. He explained
how to differentiate a company’s products
and packaging in the shrink-sleeve labeling
market. Raul Matos of Karlville Develop-
ment Group, a supplier of shrink-labeling
converting and application equipment,
detailed the downstream shrink process.
The all-encompassing OMET Innovator
Seminar garnered extensive support from
partners up and down the shrink-labeling
supply chain. Chief among them were Es-
koArtwork’s new 3D design in Illustra-
tor using Studio and Visualizer, the North
American premiere of its Toolkit for Shrink
Sleeves and Shapes; and proofing and color
management for film substrates with Kalei-
doscope and Epson. Other suppliers includ-
ed Harper Corp. of America (QD proofing

(Fastmatch color-management system),
Flint Group (ultra-thin flexographic print-
ing plates), Anderson & Vreeland (plate-
measurement devices), Asahi Photoprod-

storsione.
to delle shrink sleeve.
Illustrator utilizzando Studio e Visualizer,

The appointment of the Chromos Group to rep-
resent OMET’s sales and service interests in the
German-speaking countries will prove a major
boost for both companies according to Klaus
Sedlmayr, Divisional Manager for Chromos
GmbH in Friedberg, Bavaria, one of two Chro-
mos offices in Germany. The agreement, which
came into effect in April 2009 gives the leading

company that in all senses of the phrase ‘speaks
the right language for German label convert-
ers’. For Chromos, it offers the unique facility
for one company to offer a complete range of
label printing technology, including digital (EFI
Jetrion), letterpress and offset in semi-rotary
(Codimag), and flexo, offset, and gravure in full
rotary forms (OMET). With OMET as a key
part of our portfolio, we have the right machine
for every label job from short runs of less than
1000 metres, through mid length of 1000 – 5000
metres up to long run work above 5000 metres,
explained Mr Sedlmayr.
Admitting that the boundaries between the
techniques and print processes were far from
fixed, Mr Sedlmayr said that in reality there was
no conflict of interest, and in fact the manufac-
turers complemented each other. Best of all,
he said, it makes Chromos the only one-stop-
shop for label printers in Germany, Switzerland,
and Austria who can tap into our vast array of
knowledge and technical knowhow.
The depth of experience comes from more than
50 years of supplying top class equipment to the
graphic arts industry. Still in the original Swiss
family ownership in Dielsdorf (Zürich), Chro-
mos AG today is one of EuropÈs most respected
suppliers of machinery and consumables from
leading international companies, including Ko-
mori, Ryobi, HP-Indigo, OMET and Fuji. With
its 100% label focus, Chromos GmbH is the
competence centre for labels in the Chromos
Group and is keen to raise the market profile
for OMET amongst label printing companies in
German speaking Countries. From its office in
Friedberg (Bavaria), it believes it has the pulse of
the label market that will translate into machine
sales for OMET’s comprehensive range of press
technology. Our market research tells us that
the blend of Italian innovation and the security
of dealing with a local German-speaking com-
pany, makes the OMET/Chromos partnership a
very potent competitor in the label press market,
commented Klaus Sedlmayr.
Beginning with Goebel forms presses in the
1990s, Chromos (Germany) soon added the
Codimag agency for semi-rotary offset labels,
and has been successful with this brand, install-
Sprache wie die Etikettendrucker spricht’.
Chromos präsentiert sich nahezu einzigartig
am Markt. Aus einer Hand die komplette Ban-
dbreite der Etikettendruck-Technologie vom
Digitaldruck (EFI Jetrion) über Buchdruck und
Offset im Semirotativbereich (Codimag) bis hin
zu Flexo, Offset und Tiefdruck im Vollrotativbe-
reich (OMET) und last but not least Finishing-
jedoch entsteht dadurch kein Interessenkonflikt,

blieren. In Friedberg, so scheint es, versteht man
den Puls des Etikettenmarktes und ist überzeugt,
dass OMET’s Technologie diesen Puls trifft.
«Unsere Marktuntersuchungen ergaben, dass
die Mischung aus italienischer Innovation und
dem seriösen und verantwortungsvollen Han-
deln eines schweizerisch/deutschen Unterne-
hmens, die OMET/Chromos Partnerschaft zu
einem starken Player auf dem Etikettenmarkt
macht», kommentiert Klaus Sedlmayr.
Neben Goebel Formulardruckmaschinen erwei-
terte Anfang der 1990er die Chromos Friedberg
ihr Programm mit Codimag, Hersteller von
Semirotativ-Etikettendruck-Maschinen und ist,
mit mittlerweile über 90 installierten Maschi-
nen, Marktführer in diesem Bereich.
siegelt.
vorfanden. Das sind echte Ingenieure mit ei-
nem Gefühl für innovative Konstruktionen. Im
Moment legen wir den Schwerpunkt auf den
Etikettenmarkt, jedoch verfügt OMET auch
über eine große und bewährte Produktpalet-
ing more than 90 machines. As the demand for
business forms declined, the company looked
to add further label machine capability and for
a number of years represented another Italian
manufacturer.
This arrangement was terminated with that
firm’s recent financial re-structuring, and an op-
portunity emerged for a new manufacturer for
Chromos to represent. Careful market evalua-
tion by Karl Fust, a Director of the parent Chro-
mos AG/Switzerland and Klaus Sedlmayr, high-
lighted the opportunity with OMET, and after
negotiations at their headquarters in Lecco, the
deal was struck. What impressed us most about
OMET was the organisation we witnessed in Lec-
co. They are true engineers but with a real flare
for innovative design. At present we are dealing
only with their label presses, but they also have a
proven range of technology for flexible packaging
and folding cartons, as well as a separate division
for tissue making machines, commented Mr
Sedlmayr. Following the signing of the agree-
ment by the two companies, a joint Open House
was arranged for Chromos’ VIP customers to
introduce them to the new Italian technology.
Without exception they liked what they saw and
have given us high hopes for future success with
OMET presses in our territory, he added. The
proof of this came recently, with the order for an
OMET X-Flex 340 from German printing com-
pany Rudiger Heinelt GmbH, based in Nüsttal,
an offset commercial print house that is look-
ing to diversify into self-adhesive labels. The

te für flexible Verpackung und Faltschachteln,
ebenso über eine eigene Abteilung für Tissue-
Maschinen», berichtet Klaus Sedlmayr. Na-
chdem beide Unternehmen die Vereinbarung
unterzeichnet hatten, wurde ein Open-House in
Lecco veranstaltet um den Chromos Kunden die
neue italienische Technologie näher zu bringen.
«Ohne Ausnahme gefiel ihnen, was sie sahen
in May/June 2010, and Chromos is aware that
all eyes in the market will be firmly fixed on it to
see how well it works. Klaus Sedlmayr claims he
is very confident that the commissioning will go
smoothly and states that two Chromos techni-
cians will be in attendance throughout, as part of
their continued training on OMET equipment,
which began with an intensive course in the
Lecco factory. Chromos says it has seven tech-
nicians located across Germany to provide rapid
response to customer call outs in Chromos terri-
tory, while spare parts can be shipped ‘same-day’
from the factory by courier.
This is seen as a vital part of the plan to con-
vince German-speaking label converters that
the OMET offering, via Chromos, is a genu-
ine alternative to the established brands. With
negotiations already advanced for two more
OMET press sales, Chromos is pleased with
the response to its new agency, particularly in

wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen man startete. «Es
gibt immer noch eine Überkapazität auf dem
Etikettenmarkt, die Gewinnmargen sind ge-
schrumpft, aber diejenigen Unternehmen, die
ein added-value anbieten, werden Aufträge
gewinnen - und wir glauben, dass OMET Ma-
schinen dieses gewisse Extra bieten», erklärt
Klaus Sedlmayr. Sobald das erste Etappenziel,
der Verkauf von mindestens sechs Etiketten-
druckmaschinen aus dem OMET Programm
pro Jahr, erreicht ist, werden die Aktivitäten
auf den flexiblen Verpackungsmarkt und die
Faltschachteln ausgeweitet.
Den frühen Erfolg seines neuen deutschen Part-
ners kommentierte Marco Calcagni, Vertrieb-
sdirektor bei OMET, so: «Zwischen den beiden
Firmen besteht eine große Synergie, da beide
noch in Familienbesitz sind und sie dadurch
die Philosophie des anderen sehr gut verste-
hen.
sehr gut kennen».
light of the difficult economic conditions under
which it started. There is already a level of over
capacity in the label printing market, but with
profit margins so tight, it will be the companies
that can add value that will win the orders and we
believe that OMET machines have that something
extra, explained Mr Sedlmayr who is working
towards an initial target of six label machines
per year before moving into the wider scope of-
fered by OMET in flexible packaging and fold-
ing cartons. Commenting on the early success of
his new German partner, Marco Calcagni, Sales
Director at OMET, said: There is great synergy
between the two companies as they are both still
family owned and operated, and therefore under-
stand each other’s philosophy. Chromos has an
excellent reputation for supplying quality equip-
ment with an after sales service to match, so we
are delighted to have them as our partner for the
German, Swiss and Austrian markets, which they
understand so well.

fezionamento finale. Sempre con la massima
qualità in ogni fase del processo produttivo, at-
vestimenti in tecnologia e impiantistica.
Strutturata in più complessi produttivi, dove
lavorano circa 250 addetti, Masterpress ha
concentrato a Białystok - dove sono in funzio-
ne linee con stampa fino a dieci colori, oltre
a laminazione e serigrafia - la produzione di
etichette in carta e pellicola termica sensibile,
utilizzabili per ogni etichettatrice, shrink slee-
ves ed etichette autoadesive promozionali e de-
corative per l’industria alimentare, cosmetica,
chimica o manifatturiera.
tecnologia offset a cinque colori e verniciatu-
ra UV, oltre a fustellatura e incollaggio auto-
matico, sono invece realizzate nel complesso
becoming one of the leading converters
of labels and flexible packaging using self-
adhesive material, film, laminated products
and carton board with offset and flexo print
technologies.
Being in tune with changes in market de-
mand has always been one of Masterpress’
strong points, and along with its compre-
hensive range of customer services, from
technical consulting to support in pre-press
graphics, up to the final package product,
has allowed the company to prosper. Top
quality at every stage of production is cer-
tified by ISO 9001 accreditation, and the
recent national award for ‘Quality’ won in
2009.
The company has built its success on the
flexibility of its organisation, coupled with
a programme of ongoing training for its
staff, and sustained investment in technol-
ogy and equipment. Masterpress employs a
total of 250 staff across its various produc-
tion sites. It is located in two places – Olsz-tyn and Bialystok; it is the second site that cooperates with Omet company. Produc-
tion of paper and sensitive thermal film
labels, which can be used by any labelling
machine, shrink sleeves and promotional
and decorative self-adhesive labels for the
food, cosmetics, chemical and manufactur-
ing industry, is concentrated in Białystok.

technology are located at the company’s
plant in Olsztyn.
Masterpress is growing fast, as the recent investments confirm. A new production
hall in Białystok is to cover 10,000 square
metres and is scheduled to start the pro-duction at the beginning of 2011 to enable
the company to keep pace with market
growth. Despite the recent investment in
a digital print service for short run labels,
Masterpress has nailed its colours to Omet
for its major production technology.
“Our company was only set up in 1996, so
we are still very young” said Jacek Trykozko,
Masterpress’ Plant Manager. “But, in 2001
we decided we needed to make a leap in
quality and began to search the market for
a machinery manufacturer that we thought
we could build a partnership with. We had
the opportunity to see Omet’s technology
at Converflex, and followed this up by sev-
eral visits to the company’s factory in Lecco,
where we were able to witness the company’s
ongoing commitment to improvement and
evolution.”
The decision was made to purchase two
Omet VaryFlex lines, and more recently
one of its X-Flex machines. “Thanks to their
versatility, we are using them on our entire
product range,” added Trykozko, “and we
are very satisfied with their performance. In
particular, I’d mention the tension and regis-
ter control, the easy changeover, and the con-
sistently high quality maintained throughout
the production cycle, even with changes of
running speed. These are all a credit to the
company that designed them.”
“But, above all,” concluded Masterpress’
Plant Manager, “we appreciate Omet’s philos-
ophy that means it is open to new ideas and
requests from its customers, and it is ready to
accept any challenge the market throws up
and develop new machines to cope.”
1998. – spiega Jacek Trykozko, direttore degli
stabilimenti Masterpress – Dal 2001 abbiamo
A Converflex
abbiamo avuto modo di prendere visione
diretta della tecnologia OMET. In seguito ci
sono stati diversi contatti e visite nello stabili-
mento lecchese e abbiamo potuto verificare il
costante impegno dell’azienda a migliorare e

The French market has always been good for
OMET. In previous years, the reliability of
OMET’s Flexy line brought many in-
stallations of both its
servo and convention-
ally driven models.
And, since its in-
troduction in 2002,
servo and gearless
technologies have
enjoyed widespread
success with the in-
stallation of a large
number of OMET
VaryFlex presses.

However, when OMET launched the new ser-
vo driven X-Flex in 2008, things moved up a
gear:
«This new press has really captured the imagi-
nation of French converters,» stated Alberto
Redaelli, OMET’s International Sales Direc-
tor. “Increased pressure on prices and greater
demand for JIT deliveries are both answered by
features on this new hi-tech line».
Mr Christian Merelle, Sales Agent for OMET’s
narrow web presses in France, continued: «Our
customers are intrigued by the technology of this
press, which, with attentive technical support,
has been the key to expanding our presence in
the market. In addition to increasing number of
new customers, we are pleased to see that many
existing users are choosing to grow with OMET,
as the number of repeat orders bears witness.
Reliability and ease of use of the OMET presses,
as well as the quick response of our After Sales
Service Team have been really appreciated,»
Another key factor in the success of the X-Flex
series is its use of servo technology, not only
in printing phase, but also in die cutting sec-
tion, which allows a remarkable saving in setup
time.
With the market at its most competitive, the
ability to reduce start up time and waste is cru-
cial to secure a healthy and wealthy business.
Once again, high level technology, combined
with good technical support, are the key rea-
sons to look at OMET for a capital investment.
Success in the high-end of the market is under-
lined by a number of installations OMET has
made in French-speaking Africa. Flexibility of
configuration, use of gearless and sleeve tech-
nology, and the ability to print the widest range
of substrates, are the reason for OMET’s suc-
cess with package printing presses.
«Shrink sleeves, wraparounds, PS labels, and
cartons, are only some of the many and varied
applications that OMET presses are used for in
Maghreb Countries» commented Alberto Re-
daelli, who added: «OMET’s range of presses,
which are available in widths from 250 to 850
mm, and come with a variety of different con-
verting and finishing options, provide all label
converters with the perfect solution for their spe-
cific needs».
table réussite car elles offrent de grandes pos-
indique M. Alberto Redaelli. «Dans notre
gamme de machines, nous disposons de
nombreuses laizes pouvant aller de 250 à 850
mm; parmi les différentes options les clients
trouveront la solution appropriée à leurs be-
soins».

The countdown actually began a long time
ago: five years may seem a long time, but
when a big event like this needs to be pre-
pared, those years fly by.
And EXPO 2015, especially for those who are
working on its planning and organisation, is
really just around the corner.
The numbers themselves speak, frankly.
From 1st May to 31st October 2015, the peri-
od during which the EXPO will be staged in
Milan, approximately 21 million visitors and

Circa 7 mila
sono gli eventi culturali previsti nel programma,
36 mila i volontari che contribuiranno all’orga-
economico, sociale e culturale.
30 million visits are estimated to take place.
There will be around 7,000 cultural events
requiring 36,000 volunteers to help run the
events, and 70,000 thousand new jobs cre-
ated in the build-up phase. The 95 halls of
the EXPO will accommodate the stands of
140 countries on a site totalling 1.1 million
square metres. According to the budget,
Euro15 billion Euro will be consumed on in-
frastructural works, 2 billion of which is be-
ing directed at new projects and the remain-
der on improvements.
With expectations running high, the diplo-
matic battle to secure the EXPO for Milan
took more than a year and a half, and the file
ran to more than 1000 pages involving 120
countries.
It is only thanks to some exceptional team-
work that Milan beat the bid from Smirne on
31st March 2008. That was the day on which
the challenge really started for Milan and our
country.
The theme of EXPO 2015 is topical and ap-
pealing - ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.
The event will focus on tradition, creativeness
and innovation in the foodstuff sector, with
special emphasis on the right to healthy, safe
and sufficient food for the entire planet. The
economic, social and cultural repercussions
are manifest. The struggle against hunger
and thirst, child mortality and malnutrition,
that affects 850 million people on the plan-
et today, the commitment to a healthy life-
style to eliminate the big new social illnesses
of our age (from obesity to cardiovascular
problems, from cancer to the most diffused
epidemics) and education of, in particular,
children, teenagers, the disabled and elderly
towards proper nourishment.
The innovation of the whole alimentary chan-
nel will also be deepened to improve the nu-
tritional features of the products, their pres-
ervation and distribution, and most emphasis
will be given to ‘food traditions’, meant as cul-
tural and ethnic elements. On these subjects,
Milan and Italy will have a fundamental role

to play. The high quality of traditional Italian
food is well known and appreciated all over
the world. Italian food is loved because it is
healthy and genuine. This reflects the fact that
pleasure, quality, taste, cuisines and regional
products, biodiversity, and people’s and ani-
mals’ health are all part of the Italian culture
and way of life. The Italian food sector, the
second largest in the Country, counts 36,000
small and medium size companies, 500,000
employees, and an annual turnover of Euro
100 billion. This level of excellence n Italy is
the legacy of centuries of farmers’ expertise,
improving production methods, agricultural
and zoo-technical practices, together with
the decisions made by the food industry and
its sales and distribution systems.
EXPO, as already stated, also means invest-
ment in structures and facilities. This begins
with those that are directly connected to the
large 110-hectare sit where the event will take
place. Created by a bunch of senior designers
and young architects and engineers, and sup-
ported by three internationally famous archi-
tects, including Stefano Boeri, Ricky Burdett,
and Jacques Herzog, the EXPO 2015 site is
conceived as an expression of the theme
‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’. The area
is modelled as a single landscape - an island
“tradizioni alimentari” come elementi culturali
e etnici. In questo ambito, Milano e l’Italia pos-
sono giocare un ruolo fondamentale. L’alta qua-
no Boeri, Ricky Burdett e Jacques Herzog.

strong symbolic impact: the World Avenue

life to a pedestrian way that will be 35 me-

the World Avenue. The space allotted to Ita-

Its effects, not just its food and cuisine, will
present the Italian culture of food transfor-

on an extraordinary variety of products. The
large arena of over 4,000 square metres, the
junction point of both axes and virtual cen-
tre of the entire site, will be the place where,

qua, vero e proprio monumento orizzontale – e
assegnato, tutti affacciati sulla World Avenue.
Lungo il Cardo saranno disposti i lotti assegnati
all’Italia, alle sue regioni, città e province.
incontra l’Italia. A Nord del Cardo è situato il
Palazzo Italia, uno spazio destinato a luogo di
rappresentazione e rappresentanza dell’Italia
rivolto verso il lago, spettacolare scenario per
eventi e area di relax.

The origins of the company date back to the
end of the Eighteenth Century, 1794 to be pre-
cise, when the first Carrara, Jacopo, became a
‘paper-maker’ in Pescia. But, it was not until
1873 that Giuliano, Jacopo's grandson, started
the real business by establishing a small paper
mill in Boschi di Chievi (Pescia) to produce
straw paper. He employed five staff, and used
waterpower to drive the machines. Since then,
the history of the Italian paper industry - and
others besides - is interlaced with the history
of the Carraras. In 1959 Giuliano, Tullio and
Mario Carrara established the paper mill called
Cartiera San Felice, and in doing so marked a
turning point in company history by creating a

tory. Later on, in 1987, the exclusive license
to produce and sell Kleenex products in Italy
was acquired from the Kimberly Clark Corpo-
ration. In the 1990s, Cartoinvest, the holding
company of the Carrara's family business set
out on a programme of internationalisation.
In 2002, when Cartoinvest was sold to SCA,
under the guidance of Massimo Carrara, who
became President, the Industrial Group Cav
Mario Carrara e Figli decided to look for a new
challenge.
Today, less than ten years later, we can report
that challenge has been met. With the compa-
nies M.C. Tissue in Tassignano and especially
Cartiera Carma, with its seven production sites,
including that in Pratovecchio, the Industrial
Group Cav Mario Carrara e Figli is enjoying
a renaissance. This is what the numbers say:
a total of 90,000 square metres of operational
covered surface; 250 employees; a turnover of
150 million Euros; and investments made dur-
ing the past 6 years that amount to 70 million
Euros.
The atmosphere you experience inside this
industrial complex bears witness to the invest-
ment, and makes it one of the major players
in the national and international market for
paper products: from napkins to toilet paper,
and from industrial rolls to folded products,
all manufactured on 21 of the latest generation
e, a partire dagli anni '90 l'internazionalizza-
zione del business diviene una delle strategie
fondamentali di Cartoinvest, holding della
famiglia Carrara.
ta. Con le società M.C. Tissue di Tassignano
e, soprattutto, Cartiera Carma con i suoi 7
siti produttivi – compreso quello di Prato-
vecchio-, il Gruppo Industriale Cav Mario
Carrara e Figli sta vivendo un nuovo rina-
scimento, Lo dicono i numeri: 90 mila metri
quadrati di superificie totale operativa coper-
ta, 250 dipendenti, un fatturato di 150 milio-
ni di euro e investimenti compiuti negli ultimi
6 anni pari a 70 milioni.
ultima generazione.
«Dietro a questi numeri c'è una forte e co-
esa tradizione familiare imprenditoriale. -
orgoglio imprenditoriale: «Siamo orgogliosi

«Behind these figures is a strong and cohesive tra-
dition of family enterprise,» stated the President
Massimo Carrara. «Our family has always had
solid principles, such as passion for our job and
a sense of responsibility – values that our charis-
matic Group leader, Mario Carrara, taught us».
These statements show how much pride he
takes in his own business: «We feel proud of
what we are: we believe in our work, and above
all we believe in what we can obtain together
with our workforce» he explained.
It is no coincidence that this ongoing growth is
accompanied in Group activity by a more and
more environmental care and responsibility:
Carma Professional pays a special attention to
all aspects connected with eco-sustainability,
essential parts of the wider concept of qual-
ity, attested by ISO 14000 and ISO 9001 cer-
tifications. All Carma Professional products
are ECOLABEL, PEFC and FSC certified in-
dicating the company’s mission to respect the

BulkySoft, presentato ufficialmente a marzo
in una prestigiosa convention all'Hotel Princi-
pe di Piemonte a Viareggio e destinato, a par-
tire dal 2011, a rappresentare l’immagine del
Gruppo Carrara in Europa nel mercato pro-
fessional: «Un brand - spiega ancora Massimo
Carrara - attraverso il quale vogliamo con-
quistare ancor maggior visibilità sul mercato
europeo. Una linea di prodotto completa, di
immagine, funzionale, in grado di soddisfare
ogni esigenza dell'utilizzatore professionale e
di rispondere così alle potenzialità di questo
mercato in ambito europeo.
ra. E non è un caso, dunque, che in Carma ne-
gli ultimi mesi siano state acquisite ben 4 linee
OMET, tutte di ultimissima generazione.
«Si tratta di quattro TV841, - spiega Enrico
Gandolfi, area manager di OMET - le mac-
chine più veloci e tecnicamente più perfor-
manti. Montano gruppi per tovaglioli punta
a punta, gruppi stampa a 2 colori, gruppi

gruppo come Carrara».
forest management. In addition, the company
has SA 8000 and OHSAS 18001 certification
relating to ‘social responsibility’ and ‘workers'
well-being’ respectively.
«Nowadays it is ever more necessary for a busi-
nessman to act to safeguard the environment»
continued Carrara. «It is not just a matter of
certifications. They are not an end, but a means
to an end for us» he added.
This eco-environmental sensitivity comes with
a marked care for the customers and their
needs in the Industrial Group Cav Mario Car-
rara e Figli. If the decisive choice made by the
Group eight years ago in favour of the profes-
sional market, a new challenge now opens up
for Carma: the launch of the new BulkySoft
brand. Officially launched in March at a pres-
tigious convention in the Hotel Principe di
Piemonte in Viareggio, BulkySoft will, from
2011, represent the Group’s in Europe on the
professional market. «A brand,» explained
Massimo Carrara, «through which we want to
create greater visibility on the European market.
BulkySoft is a complete product, an image, and
a functional line that is able to fulfil the needs
of any professional, and meet the expectations of
the European market. Our distributors will be
the vital link with the market, ad we select them
carefully so that we can build a real partnership»
he said.
The Carrara Group has invested in the best
production technology the market has to of-
fer. The cooperation with OMET is strategic
in this sense: «OMET is the number one brand
in the sector,» said Massimo Carrara. It is no
coincidence then that Carma has purchased 4
OMET lines in the past few months, all of the
latest generation.
«The four machines are all TV841 models»
explained Enrico Gandolfi, OMET's Area
Manager. «This means they are the fastest and
best performing machines available. They have
point-to-point napkin units, 2-colour printing
units, folding and high-speed transfer units, and
job changeovers are carried out using fast em-
bossing cassettes. They are the best the market
can offer to a group like Carrara».

Secondo approfonditi studi accademici, sembra
successo.
Molti converters offrono una varietà di asciu-
gamani con differenti caratteristiche. Il business
proviene ovviamente in maniera principale
speciali, rendendo difficile o addirittura impos-
era limitata a pochi disegni, peraltro assai simili
uno all’altro. Infine, anche la presentazione del
prodotto lasciava alquanto a desiderare.
public services, and the use is as easy.
According to serious academic studies, seems
that paper towel can provide high safety level
to contamination, compared for instance to
hot air dryers. That’s why towel market has
grow into tissue market, and many players
into converting arena are offering to the mar-
ket a variety of towels.
Business is obviously coming from Tissue,
but also the supply of dispenser should not
be neglected. Often, in order to tie user to
buy from the same supplier, special dimen-
sion (or folding shape are used, in order to
make difficult or even impossible to refill one
particular dispenser with competitor’s tow-
els. So, there’s no surprise to see a number of
dispenser, with different material, shape and
dimension.
This fragmentation in towel size, material, di-
mension and folding shape is a real potential
problem for those who intend to serve Towel
market.
In the old times the dominant substrate for
paper towels was a sort of sand paper, made
mainly with recycled paper. Also, being a
quite new product, there was little or no dif-
ference into the towels dimensions. Decora-
tion as embossing was limited to few standard
pattern, very alike one to the other. Last, but
not least, presentation or shelf appearance of
the stack was not an issue at all.
As regards substrates, side by side with the
old-fashioned brown paper towels we have
premium products made with decent or high
quality tissue. It is not uncommon find much
softer multi layer laminated-tissue towels,
providing higher absorbency and comfort.
Other materials appeared on the market are
soft but yet very strong Airlaid towels, which
can easily find their place into hospital and
health care markets.
We mention also the evolution on the surface
decoration. Two or more ply can be micro
embossed and laminated; microembossing
design can also be personalized by adding
other small brand or logos designs, in order

to provide an even better touch and appear-
ance. Also, surface printing can be performed
for advertising messages.
Market has evolved also under the variety of
folding shapes and dimensions. Nowadays,
there is on the market a big variety of fold-
ing shapes. Even if some of them seems to be
more popular than others (like the so-called
Single Fold, or Two panels fold, and the Mul-
tifold, or three-panels fold), still are existing,
available and sold into the market other fold-
ing shapes like the so-called “C – Fold”. What
is even worst, is that also with same overall
dimensions, towels can be different in folded
dimensions.
This is a serious problem, when comes to be
the converter, and it would be necessary to
serve as many markets as possible.
Being an important player as a tissue con-
verting machines manufacturer, OMET de-
cided to study carefully the market situation,
and give an answer with a different approach,
knowing that also evolution and differen-
tiation of products became more and more
driving factors.
First decision has been related to the fold-
ing technology. Dominant vacuum folding
system has without doubts a long track into
market, but is unable to solve the problem
zione e pulizia. Ancora, materiali traspiranti,
quali l’airlaid, sono praticamente impossibili da
processare su macchine che utilizzano la piega
aspirata, mentre il sistema meccanico non sof-
fre le stesse limitaziono.
Le piegatrici installate sulla OMET AS sono
state disegnate per funzionare su differenti vie,
pendenti. L'eccellente controllo automatico di
tensione consente di processare la più ampia
gamma di materiali.
related to the variety of dimensions. In facts,
once selected towel cutoff dimension, this
cannot be changed. This is like to buy and be
able to serve only one size of dispenser. With-
out any doubt, this could be a big limitation
into market potential.
That’s why OMET engineers have been able to
come up with a very flexible solution, which
allows to change easily and quickly both sizes
of the towel. That’s really a big advantage of
the mechanical folding solution provided by
OMET.
But not only the dimensions can be changed.
Thanks to a very smart cassette-style change
over system, same folder can be re-configu-
rated to produce, Single fold (V), Multi Fold
(Z) and even “C” Fold into the same folder!!
This is a very unique feature that AS Towels
folder series can offer to the market.
This provides also the ability to start with one
folder equipped with multiple interchange-
able folding heads, or towel sizes, minimizing
the starting investment versus multiple fold-
ers, dedicated to different products.
Also, mechanical fold provides other sig-
nificant advantages. Use of expensive and
high energy consuming vacuum pumps is
not necessary anymore no periodic replace-
ment or expensive maintenance on vacuum
pumps. Open mesh materials, like airlaids or
similar, which are almost impossible to pro-
cess with vacuum folding system, are easily
converted without major limitations given
using vacuum system.
OMET AS series has been engineered to pro-
cess on multiple lanes, tipically 8 or more,
rolls having web widths from 1800 mm up
to 3100 mm, to provide very high output fig-
ures.
The basic folding system can be combined
with several embossing systems, thanks to
the modular machine design. From Single
ply paper, up to 4 layers of micro embossed
tissue can be processed, choosing the suitable
independently driven embossing module.
Excellent web tension control is provided by
the closed loop tension control. As a result,
this widens the range of substrates that folder
Arc
hipe

can process.
However, the best of the OMET towel fold-
ing technology is concentrated into the in-
tegrated High speed rotating cutting station.
This system avoids the need of expensive and
space consuming log cutters. Towels are cut
immediately, into the machine, and the length
of the towel can be changed within seconds.
Servo-driven star wheels, which provide a
consistent stacking according to quantities
set into operator’s interface panel.
Last, but not least, OMET solution pro-
vides a very flexible solution when comes
to overwrapping. AS folder design separates
stacks in a way that they can be individually
wrapped using a conventional over-wrapper.
Even if banding is an easily available option,
the integral overwrapping is possible. This
provides other two other important advan-
tages. First, it is possible to have a registered
printing on the overwrapping material, pro-
viding an expanded graphics potential and
brand recognition to the finished product.
Second, also in those markets (hospital, sani-
tary use in general) where an higher hygiene
level is required, fully sealed presentation is a
very competitive advantage.
ingombranti Log Cutters. Gli asciugamani sono
tagliati immediatamente in macchina, durante
facilmente cambiata in pochi secondi tramite
semplici operazioni. Ruote a stella comandate
da servomotori consentono un preciso impilag-
gio, secondo le quantità selezionate tramite il
pannello operatore.
Infine, la soluzione OMET consente un’estrema
flessibilità anche quando si tratta di confezio-
namento.
do sempre possibile l’imballo tramite fascetta.
Inol-
mente offre reali vantaggi competitivi.

La notizia, rimbalzata con evidenza sulla

was to coordinate the strategy of the various
companies in the Lazzareschi Group. Already
a well-known name in Italy, mainly for its Re-
gina branded products, the company is also
recognised for its attention to quality, and its
commitment to the environment and social
responsibility, both of which are pillars in the
company’s mission.
Integrity, respect, responsibility and oppor-
tunity are the basic values of Sofidel Group
ethics, and they run through all of its com-
panies. These are located in Italy, Belgium,
Germany, France, Poland, Spain, United
Kingdom, Greece, Turkey and Croatia, and all
have implemented management systems for
social responsibility, with the aim of optimis-
ing the care and growth of the human element
in the companies themselves, and of those
contributing new ideas. It is no coincidence
that Delicarta has already been awarded the
international certificate for standards in social
responsibility, SA 8000, and is the first in the
Italian tissue paper sector to receive it.
There are many examples of how the Sofidel
Group is fundamentally committed to link-
ing the need for economic growth with that
of respect for the environment, and attention
to society. As the first major Italian company
to take part in the Climate Saver Program, the
Group has defined a medium/long term plan
with WWF. This will reduce direct CO2 emis-
sions deriving from production processes and
power consumption, with a predicted cut of
11% on the 2007 figure by the end of 2012.
The agreement foresees a further improve-
ment in direct emissions and the collection
of relevant supplier data aimed at defining a
further reduction of indirect emissions. The
partnership between WWF Italy and Sofidel
was created in 2007. Its aim was to embark
on a path of improvement in environmental
policy and a reduction in the impact on the
environment by the Group. In return, Sofidel
agreed to support WWF's preservation proj-
ects that defend bio-diversity.
Following this, the Sofidel Group recently
prepared the second edition of its Sustainabil-
ity Balance after winning the prize "Toscana
nata nel 1988 con l’obiettivo di
coordinare le strategie delle va-
rie aziende del gruppo del grup-
po Stefani e Lazzareschi. Una
realtà d’eccellenza del “made in
Germania, Francia, Polonia, Spagna, Svezia,
CO2 dirette derivanti dai processi produttivi
emissioni indirette. Una partnership, quella

Ecoefficiente 2009-2010" (Eco-efficient Tus-
cany 2009-2010) for the Tuscany Region. At
the invitation of the European Commissioner
for Climate, Connie Hedegaard, the com-
pany President, Luigi Lazzareschi joined in
round table discussions in Brussels dedicated
to making the transition towards the green
economy, known as ‘Leading by Example’.
There, Sofidel's experience was taken as proof
of how sustainability and growth can work
together. Last April, the Sofidel Group joined
the Sodalitas Foundation, the first organisa-
tion in Italy to be committed to the enterprise
of social responsibility, and promoting dia-
logue between companies and the non-profit
making world. On 27th March, the Group
took part in ‘Earth Hour’, the symbolic global
event in which WWF invited millions of peo-
ple to turn off the light for an hour to make
world leaders sensitive to the commitment to
reach a globally efficient and real agreement
about climate. This came as a result of the
disappointing outcome of the summit in Co-
penhagen.
But Sofidel's mission to establish the principles
of sustainability does not end there. To trans-
fer it to consumer products, some important
brands of ecological quality have been chosen.
These distinguish particular production pro-
cesses that are considered to be compatible
with environment protection. At present, the
paper mill, Delicarta, and technical paper fac-
l’economia verde ‘Leading by Example’, por-
tando l’esperienza di Sofidel a testimonianza
di come sostenibilità e crescita possono cam-
minare insieme.
Nell’aprile scorso, inoltre, il Gruppo Sofidel ave-
va aderito alla Fondazione Sodalitas, la prima
organizzazione in Italia ad essersi impegnata
nel diffondere la responsabilità sociale d’im-
presa e a promuovere il dialogo fra imprese e
no profit, mentre il 27 marzo aveva preso parte
biente. Attualmente lo stabilimento cartiera
Delicarta e le cartotecniche Soffass, Delicarta

is the European Brand for Ecological Quality.
In addition, Sofidel acknowledges the impor-
tant part played by forests in protecting the lo-
cal and global environment, as well as main-
taining and enriching bio-diversity through
the standards of forest management FSC
(Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Pro-
gramme of Endorsement of Forest Certifica-
tion Schemes). Last but not least, Sofidel has
been publishing a two-yearly Environmental
Report since 2003, in which the main indica-
tors of environmental performance are clearly
described for each factory in the Group, and
globally.
To confirm its commitment to safeguarding
the activity of its employees and improve the
working environment, reduce accidents and
job-related illnesses, and respect European
Regulations on health and safety of workers,
research of new technologies, new plants and
machinery, and training personnel, Sofidel
joined the Safety Project called Target Zero.
This is organised by the Giuseppe Lazzareschi
Foundation, which each year awards compa-
nies that have distinguished themselves in risk
reduction.
There is also a confirmed programme of in-
vestment in suppliers, including a long-time
cooperation with OMET. «We have chosen to
work with established partners to sustain this
growth, and with them we are building new
development projects,» stated Moreno Gemi-
niani, Technical Coordinator of the Group’s
converting sector. «OMET's technology is our
reference point for napkin machines and we
have OMET's machines working in all our fac-
tories, even in the newly built ones. The qual-
ity of the equipment and its high productivity
confirms OMET's commitment, and we have
built up a good relationship with them thanks
to way they have responded to our demands.
That feeling is primarily ethical. OMET man-
ages to combine a quality of technology with its
proud history and care for the environment and
its employees – this typifies a forward thinking
company,» he concluded.
Eco Flower).
forestale FSC (Forest Stewardshihp Council) e
PEFC (Programme of Endorsement of Forest
Certification Schemes).
– afferma More-
attenzione all’ambiente e ai propri dipendenti
turo».

tion Award” event was launched
in 2006 in Porcari di Lucca, the
cradle of the Italian paper indus-
try, and was created to recognise
those who had made this dual
concept a mantra for their work.
It is promoted by the Giuseppe
Lazzareschi Foundation, and was
established in 2003 to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of the death
of this great paper entrepreneur.
The Lazzareschi family wanted
the award to foster social, cultural
and contracting initiatives.
For the past five years in October,
the prestigious Glass Palace, located in the
heart of the town, and headquarters of the
Foundation, has been the stage on which one
or more companies choose to award those
who have marked development in a tangible
way. The occasion coincides with the MIAC
closing day in Lucca - the three-day event de-
voted to the tissue and paper industry.
OMET and its staff are proud to be the spon-
sor of the fifth annual event, due to be held
on15th October. «The history of a company,»
explained President and Founder, Angelo
Bartesaghi, « is the history of the men and
women who believed in the project and gave
their best to achieve it. This is also true for
OMET. In technology terms, our machines are
the expression and result of our commitment
to research, and our ability to read the market
È da questa riflessione che, nel
2006, a Porcari di Lucca, nella
culla dell’industria cartaria ita-
liana, nasce l’evento «Tecnologia

zione», che si propone di valoriz-
zare proprio chi ha fatto di questo
binomio una propria regola di
lavoro.
A promuoverlo è la Fondazione
Giuseppe Lazzareschi, costituitasi
lizzarlo. Questo vale anche per OMET: la tec-

OMET, whose geographical location is no co-

laborazione fra quanti vi lavorano all’interno

it). The Club, which was formally created in
June 2009, enables the sponsoring companies
to maintain continuity with the candidates so
as not to lose their individual excellence that
is acknowledged by the awards. It provides a
forum where the sponsors and award winners
can stay in touch with each other. Among
its aims are: fostering good relations among
members; providing opportunities for an ex-
change of experience, research, adding value,
opportunities, and the facility to reward ex-

OMET.
nologiaepassione.it).
l’evento, e come soci meritevoli i vari premiati.
esperienze, ricercare, valorizzare, dare opportu-

mare in realtà.
for the products was booming, but the multi-
nationals could not cope with the size of the
market and volumes required. Enter Ferenc
Bodrogai, a graduate engineer in paper and
cellulose converting, who had often consid-
ered this idea during the 15 years he spent
in management at one of the leading tissue
making companies in the market. Then, he
could not turn his ideas into reality - now, he
could.
Drawing on his extensive knowledge of the
tissue market and its production technology,
he set up a new company with three partners,
two of whom are still actively involved, and
Forest-Papír Kft was born in 1994.
Today, Forest-Papír is the benchmark for its
products in Hungary. With the mantra "It is a
good thing to achieve a good result with good
people" to inspire Ferenc Bodrogai, CEO and
major shareholder of Forest-Papír Kft, the
company has found a winning formula.
Four production sites, two warehouses for
storing finished products, more than 230 em-
ployees and around 80 partners in support-
ing companies indicate the size of the opera-
tion at Forest-Papír.
The company is based in Lábatlan, a small
town in the north of Hungary, close to Po-
land, where it manufactures its branded
products in rolls. One plant focuses on the
production of low-price items, both in rolls
and folded, while another plant specialises
in high-quality napkins, and is probably the
largest of its type in the European Commu-
nity. Another plants concentrates on the

manufacture tissues. This large and complex
company covers all the main segments of the
market for disposable paper products: from
bath towels to tablemats, and from napkins to
tissues. While bath towels rank first in com-
pany turnover for volume and value, Forest-
Papír’s core business is still the production of
napkins. It was no accident that Forest-Papír
invented a single-fold napkin with very high
print quality and special embossing, which
met with great success.
Generally, high quality is the norm for For-
est-Papír’s products. However, because of the
global economic problems, which are also af-
fecting Hungary, the company has launched
a series of medium and low price products,
manufactured using highly productive
equipment from raw materials sourced at a
competitive price to quality ratio.
Currently, the majority of Forest-Papir’s out-
put is consumed by the domestic Hungarian
market, sold through important local retail-
ing chains. But, its short-term goal is to be-
come the leading supplier to neighbouring
markets, and it already distributes its prod-
ucts in 14 different countries.
Product innovation and research are two of
verso importanti catene distributrici locali.
suoi prodotti in 14 altri Paesi.
the main factors driving the company’s de-
velopment in recent years. Working to its
slogan ‘Forest, the new shape of paper’, the
company has, in many cases, revolutionised
the concept of disposable paper products at
local market level. In addition to the single-
fold napkins already mentioned, Forest in-
troduced the first scented and coloured tissue
in 100-piece boxes, the first 24-roll packet of
toilet paper, and the first multifunction paper
bath-towel into the Hungarian market.
However, the company is strongly oriented
towards meeting the satisfaction not only
of its customers but also of its employees,
who play a key role in keeping the organisa-
tion competitive. This results in a keen envi-
ronmental awareness and the provision of a
range of services that include a gym with a
fitness instructor and a masseur, and special
financial advisers for private investments, all
of who play an active part in improving the
quality of life within the company.
This model business decided long ago to sup-
port its development with OMET technol-
ogy. In 2000 it bought its first OMET, a sec-
ond hand 501 model with four printing units,
which allowed it to begin napkin production.
Shortly after, it added two more second hand
OMET folding machines.
Most recently, in May 2009, Forest-Papír in-
stalled its first new OMET, a TV 503 model
with 3 printing units for the production of
napkins. «To meet the demand for high pro-
ductivity and excellent print quality in the
medium/low price product market, we needed
to find a partner that would be able to able to
support us,» Ferenc Bodrogai explained. «Af-
ter an exhaustive search, we turned to OMET
technology because we knew, from our expe-
rience with the second hand machines, how
good it was,» he added.
According to Ferenc Bodrogai, the level of
satisfaction with OMET is very high. «We
are extremely satisfied with the machine and
level of service support they offer. The machine
has excellent folding precision and is extremely
quiet,» he concluded.
sviluppo dell’azienda in questi anni. Coerente
primo asciugamano in carta multifunzione.
in azienda.
