THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 27, 2020

THE GOOD NEWS“THE HOLY FAMILY, OUR CHURCH FAMILY” REFLECTION BY FATHER DAVE

Dear Friends,

Today, we celebrate the Sunday in the Octave of Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are still the true model for what family life is all about. How grateful we are that the Church continues the Christmas season through the Baptism of the Lord, January 10th. We are in the midst of the Octave of Christmas, eight days as if it were Christmas Day. Today, the theme of the Holy Family continues the Christmas message, “Jesus came to us not from a cloud, but came to us in the midst of a family.” Today in a special way we give thanks to God for the gift of our families.

Did you know the very root of the word family means those who eat food together? How appropriate that at every Mass we come together to eat of the Bread of Life, the Eucharist. Today we thank God, not just for our biological family, but for our Church family.

If you take the letters “ur” out of Church, you are left with “ch-ch,” which makes no sense. The Church is more than a building – “UR” the Church. How grateful I am for all of you who make this church the vibrant parish that it is.

I would like to say a special word about one member of the Holy Family that I think gets the short end of the stick always—that is St. Joseph. I always remember visiting the home of one of our parishioners at Christmas time and admiring their Nativity set. I noticed that St. Joseph was missing. I asked, “Where is St. Joseph?” and they said they buried him in the front lawn of their previous house to sell it and never dug it up. I highly discourage that kind of piety. Rather, I encourage you to go to St. Joseph in prayer often, including asking him to help sell your house. You don’t need to bury the statue. He is very powerful and a wonderful example to us of faith, of obedience, and of humility.

An example of his humility is that we have a huge dog named after St. Bernard, an important city named after St. Louis, a mighty river named after St. Lawrence, but what do we have named after St. Joseph…an aspirin. St. Joseph can handle it because he is humble.

May we pray for similar humility, faith, and obedience in our lives.

Continued Christmas blessings,Father David Durkee

HAPPY NEW YEAR!On behalf of Father Dave,

Deacon Steve, and the entire staff at Queen of

Heaven Parish, thank you for your love and support

during 2020.

It has been a very challenging year for all of us. However, as with any

challenge, there are always countless blessings to be

seen through the eyes of faith. YOU are those

blessings. Your response and generosity demonstrate all that is good in our world.

Thank you!

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTIONPlease join our First Saturday Devotion each first Saturday of the month at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, followed by the Rosary prayed before the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Confessions will be offered after Mass. The next First Saturday is on January 2, 2021, at 8:30 a.m.

In 1925, our Blessed Mother Mary said to Sister Lucia, “I promise to assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those whom on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the Mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

QUEEN OF HEAVEN/NATIVITY MEN’S GROUP

Calling All Men! The next QOH/Nativity Men’s group fellowship meetings are on Saturday, January 9, and Saturday, January 23, 2021, starting at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 8:15 a.m. sharp! This year, we have added a remote option for those who would like to attend but are uncomfortable doing so during the COVID pandemic. We are watching the Knights of Columbus video series “Into the Breach.” This is a great way to grow your faith, make new friends, and grow our church community. No preparation needed! All are welcome. Ed Eitner will lead us on the video series on Leadership on January 9, and Mike Miller will lead us on the video series on Life on January 23. If you are interested and want more information, don’t hesitate to call Paul Childers at 815-351-7823 or Andy Platt at 330-715-7416.

HOMESTEAD HOSPICE DONATIONSHomestead Hospice is sponsoring two community outreach projects in conjunction with Queen of Heaven Parish. The Notes of Hope project is

to benefit chemo patients at various chemo locations in the area. We are asking for donations of word search, crossword puzzle, Sudoku, and adult coloring books along with handwritten notes of hope and inspiration. The Sweet Dreams project is to benefit boys and girls ages infant through 12 years. We are asking for new pajamas (with tags on please) and new books. THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 27, 2020

TOOLS FOR BUILDING A DOMESTIC CHURCHAccording to the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: “The family is, so to speak, the domestic church” (Lumen Gentium #11). This means that it is in the context of the family that we first learn who God is and to prayerfully seek His will for us. In the following bullet points you will find some suggestions on how to build your “domestic church” through a life of prayer that can help all the members of your family.• Begin praying as a family and reading from Scripture daily, certainly before meals, but also first

thing in the morning or before bed. Find a time that works for your family. Use the liturgy of the Church as a model for prayer, and try to include heartfelt unstructured prayer as well.

• Pray a Family Rosary (each member leads a decade, and everyone shares intentions).• Have a crucifix in a prominent place in the home, and in every bedroom.• Make the Sacraments a regular celebration – take the whole family to Confession and Mass!• Begin family traditions based on the seasons celebrated in the liturgical calendar.• Make your vacation a holy pilgrimage by visiting the shrines and saints of our land and the

world.• Make worshiping God a priority. Never miss Mass, even while traveling – go to: www.MassTimes.org to find a church near you!• Teach stewardship and charity to your children, through word and example.• Demonstrate love for your spouse, your children, your neighbors, and the world. Remind your children that they are loved by

God and have been given gifts to serve others.• Talk freely about the presence of God in the joys and sorrows of your life.• Welcome into your home and support priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, and lay ministers in the Church.• Participate in the lay ministries and activities of your parish community.• Allow your children to witness you in private prayer. Encourage your children to pray daily on their own, to listen for God’s call,

and if heard, to respond.• For more ideas on how to build your home as a Domestic Church, go to: www.domesticchurch.com or visit The Family Fully

Alive, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus at https://www.kofc.org/en/what-we-do/faith-in-action-programs/family/family-fully-alive.html.

CATHOLIC CEMETERIES ASSOCIATION MONTHLY SUNDAY GRIEF SUPPORTCatholic Cemeteries Association continues with our free monthly in-office grief support groups on January 17th with limited seating for social distancing. Meetings do not build off each other so you can stop in any month and fit right in. You do not even have to talk, but come and listen and be in the presence of those who understand. The January topic is “Facing the New Year with Hope and Love” but discussions follow whatever is on your heart. We meet the 3rd Sunday of every month from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the following locations: Saint Joseph Cemetery, Avon (NEW office); Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron (office); Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park (office); Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland (office); All Saints Cemetery, Northfield (office); All Souls Cemetery, Chardon (office). Meeting sites are sanitized, and seating is arranged so everyone is at a safe distance. Participants are requested to RSVP so we can plan appropriate social distancing at each location. It is required that participants wear protective facial coverings. To RSVP or for questions, please contact Rhonda at 216-930-4866.

PRE-CANA DAY AT LOYOLA RETREAT HOUSEPlease join us for this Pre-Cana Day for couples anticipating the Holy Sacrament of Marriage. The day will include prayer, Mass, presentations, quiet reflection time and opportunities for sharing with your fiancé. The Pre-Cana program aims to provide each couple with a reflective and an in-depth preparation for a joyful, faith-filled marriage – based on love that not only endures, but actually grows stronger year after year. We want you to grow more deeply in love and knowledge of each other, but also in your love and knowledge of God. More profoundly, we hope you will see that these loves are intimately related – it takes “Three to Get Married." Pre-Cana dates at the Loyola Retreat House in Green (700 Killinger Rd., Clinton, OH 44216) are: February 21, March 14, April 25, June 6, September 19, 2021. Cost per couple is $90.00. To sign up online go to: https://loyolaretreathouse.com/wp/precana.
