In accordance with the principal thesis of Kotarbifiski's reism only concrete things exist; there are no abstract entities of any sort; assertions of common knowledge which appear to imply the existence of abstract entities should be regarded as metaphors to be reformulated, without the loss of relevant content, in such a way as to imply the existence of concrete things only. The reistic view of reality, points out Grzegorczyk, offers certain advantages, not how- ever without exacting a price for them. Thus, for instance, the problem of existence becomes related to a single category of being, namely to the category of things, but if one accepts Quine's doctrine of ontological commitment, and Grzegorczyk appears to take it for granted that one should, then the reistic language must be debarred from making use of impredicative notions, and more generally from making use of quantifiers to bind variables other than those of the lowest semantic category. A restriction of this kind drastically limits the scope of ad- missible mathematics. A further consequence of reism, continues Grzegorczyk, is the need for replacing the classical geometry by a geometry of solids. In his opinion this is an enormous task and possibly not very rewarding. C. LEJEWSKI
