General Information & Sale Notes

LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

TIMETABLE OF EVENTS:

Thursday 13th February Arrival of Stock 11am - 5pm Identification Check 2pm - 6pm

Friday 14th February Sale 5pm

HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The British Limousin Cattle Society have adopted the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the N.B.A. This Sale is held subject to these rules and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrep-ancy between the two sets of conditions, the N.B.A. Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

INSURANCE: A representative of H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Limousin Cattle Society.

SEMEN ROYALTY SCHEME BULL REGISTER: Purchasers are asked to note that where a female is catalogued as being served/inseminated by a “Semen Royalty” Sire the appropri-ate royalty will be payable by the purchaser prior to registration of the calf.

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfers will be effected by the Auctioneers and the British Limousin Cattle Society as soon as possible after the Sale. Full pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all members.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

54Herd Health at British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Collective Sales

IntroductionHerd health rules were introduced by the BLCS at nominated premier Collective Society Sales and these are now in place at all premier BLCS Collective Sales (Stirling February & October; Carlisle February, May, October & December; Brecon May & November).

The principal aim is to standardise herd health declarations and information presented in order to provide both members and customers alike with clear, accurate herd health information at the point of sale and within the given sale catalogue. As such it is attractive and informative for customers and aims to further raise the level of buyer confidence.

BLCS Herd Health Rules have two principal elements:Part 1. Herds selling at the premier Collective Society Sales have to be members of, and adhering to, the terms of a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme. At a minimum, this must include a whole herd test for Johne’s disease.

Part 2. All animals male and female, including calves at foot, presented at the premier Collective Society Sales be EITHER from a BVD Accredited Herd within a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme OR to have been BVD tested virus free. All animals forward will be required to be BVD vaccinated prior to sale with an approved vaccine. Pregnant animals must have had testing and vaccination completed prior to service. Vaccination of calves at foot to be in accordance with CHeCS guidelines and recommendations.

Herd Health DeclarationThe sale entry form is accompanied by a Herd Health Declaration form asking vendors questions regarding for example: TB status; membership of CHeCS (www.checs.co.uk) health schemes (AFBI Cattle Health Scheme, HiHealth Herdcare (Biobest), & Premium Cattle Health Scheme (SRUC) and Johne’s, BVD, IBR and Lepto status. On line entries also require the Herd Health Declaration form to be completed.

Is the Herd Health Declaration compulsory?The Herd Health Declaration is compulsory at all Premier Collective Sales. For reasons of clarity and to provide purchasers with the most accurate information available, vendors are required to complete this at time of entry.

Although not compulsory at other collective sales (Newark in April & Ballymena, Dungannon, Thainstone & Stirling in May), the Society recommends that vendors complete the Herd Health Declaration. This information then appears in the Vendors’ Index within the catalogue. Where a member has chosen not to complete the Herd Health Declaration, it will simply say ‘No Herd Health Declaration’.

What Other Health Information may be displayed?It should be noted that the Herd Health information provided in the catalogue relates to whole herd status. Information relating to specific animals entered in the sale should be requested from the vendor.

Vendors are encouraged to apply to their respective CHeCS health scheme for individual animal health cards for display on pens. For an individual animal’s test results, or vaccination histories, regarding BVD, IBR, Lepto or Johne’s, these are permitted above the sale pens only upon presentation of a signed veterinary declaration to verify that the animal concerned has had a clear test.

55Again, for reasons of practicality, no health information notes are to be put in the catalogue footnotes by vendors. Similarly, the Society has requested that no declarations on health information be given by the auctioneer during the sale. Again, the sole purpose of this is to avoid confusion and to try and ensure that the information provided is done accurately, fairly and in a standardised format in the catalogue. This point has been agreed with the auctioneers.

Johne’s Risk Levels The Herd Health Declaration includes a section where breeders are able to indicate their Johne’s Risk Level, once known.

The Risk Levels are as follows:Risk Level 1 herds that were previously AccreditedRisk Level 2 herds that have had 1 or more clear qualifying testsRisk Level 3 herds that have 3% or fewer reactors every year*Risk Level 4 herds that have more than 3% reactors every year**Risk Level 5 herds not in a CHeCS Johne’s disease programme, herds with no health plan in place and herds that are not carrying out the required testing

* Note, for herds with fewer than 33 animals in the target age range, rather than 3%, Risk Level 3 will be one animal testing positive for Johne’s

It is a condition of BLCS Premier Collective Sales that animals from herds that are Johnes Risk Level 5 are not permitted to be sold.

What if a vendor is selling an animal/s that he did not breed?Vendors are still requested to fill in the Herd Health Sale Declaration accordingly. Prospective customers are advised to speak to vendors directly to acquire accurate health information on animals offered but not bred by the seller.

Using Myostatin information

An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance.

A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.

3. Genetic ColourColour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles. One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene), the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.)

“Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes.

“Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant.

“Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene.

“Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).

4. Genetics for Horned/Polled StatusA bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant).

A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned).

A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves.

EBVs & GEBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average.

a. In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart...

ü Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are.

ü Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are.

b. Accuracy Values (Acc%) are expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV, GEBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate values are less likely to change over time.

c. The numeric EBV & GEBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark which is updated annually.
