On the Dock By Larkin Hammond
Look around and see all the beauty this place has to offer.
See how lucky you are in your family’s faces. Enjoy the smiles that your hard work
has helped to place there.
Take time to enjoy every moment. Just turn those devices off for an hour and talk.
You are surrounded by those you love. They may not be here tomorrow.
Appreciate the beauty of the lake and the mountains.
Remember how short life is and how very precious
these moments on the lake are.
You can never get time back so enjoy your family and friends
here and now at the lake.
Most of all, be grateful. You are one of the lucky ones
to be here in Lake Lure.
Enjoy!
Letter from the Editor:
This is Lake Lure time. Time to start enjoying the good life and all that Lake Lure has to offer—all year long. We are no longer just a summer
community, we are alive and well all of the four beautiful seasons. With the new school and the new medical facility, life keeps getting easier here.
Not only do we have one of the best year-round lakes for fishing and water sports, but there’s lots to do around the area on dry land, too. From hiking, zip-lining, biking and rock climbing for the sport enthusiast to wineries, shopping and relaxing by the fire for all of us when it’s a little too cool for a lake swim. Ingle’s stays busy and many restaurants are open all year now. The “Locals” dinners and wine tasting’s at Larkin’s are a great way to meet new friends and catch up with older ones in those cooler months.
Now it’s YOUR time to join the year around residents who call Lake Lure home.

Flowering BridgeAs you stand on the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge,
perhaps looking up at the famous Chimney Rock above, you are standing on what was once
known as historic Broad River Bridge #9. There is not only beauty here, but a rich history.
Built to allow travelers to cross this rocky river that splashes down through Bat Cave and
Chimney Rock Village as it approaches Lake Lure, the bridge was retired from its original
purpose in 2011 and given to the Town of Lake Lure. A group of local residents developed
a non-profit organization to re-purpose the structure as a public garden and walkway, the
first of its kind in North Carolina.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge was officially dedicated October 19, 2013, though it had
begun welcoming visitors when the gardens were planted in April of that year. An estimated
30,000 visitors have enjoyed “the Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful” thus far, coming from
most of the 50 states of the U.S. and from many foreign countries.
Raised stone planters line the serpentine path that crosses the bridge. Each planter has a theme
with an emphasis on plants native to the Hickory Nut Gorge and Southeastern mountains.
Informational signage allows visitors to identify plants as they walk through the garden.
The bridge garden was designed and is maintained entirely by community volunteers.
Continued preservation and development is dependent upon both their hands-on efforts
and the donation of generous visitors and benefactors. For more information,
go to lakelurefloweringbridge.com.

For years the residents of the Lake Lure area had a dream of adding medical services to meet the needs of local families. A new medical practice in Lake Lure is poised to make this vision a reality and will bring family doctors closer to home for many local residents. The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) will open the MAHEC Family Health Center at Lake Lure in 2014.
“We are excited to bring great physicians and quality healthcare to local families,” said Dr. Jeff Heck, MD and MAHEC CEO, “MAHEC has a reputation for high quality care with well trained, passionate providers and we are excited to become part of the local community.”
MAHEC is a non-profit organization established in 1974 and provides quality, compassionate healthcare as a foundation for training top physicians, dentists and health professionals. MAHEC has been a leader for 40 years committed to improving healthcare for the people of Western North Carolina.
The MAHEC Family Health Center at Lake Lure will provide full scope primary care services including: newborn, pediatric and adult care; well child check-ups; wellness and prevention exams; sick appointments; and chronic disease management.
The practice will have six patient rooms as well as a procedure and trauma room and on-site lab services. There will be a special entrance for stretchers and space for ancillary services and other providers. Most forms of insurance will be accepted.
The MAHEC Family Health Center at Lake Lure has received funding from The Golden LEAF Foundation, The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, and The North Carolina Rural Center. MAHEC is grateful for a generous donation of land from a private citizen, the encouragement of local residents, and support from The Town of Lake Lure.

Zip Lining is now more popular than ever and North Carolina
plays host to the most zip parks in the nation. You can go to almost any resort area in the state and find a zip line adventure nearby. Lake Lure is no exception being home to Canopy Ridge Farm and a ninety-minute high flying, adrenaline pumping zip line tour. The Adventure Park is nestled into the beautiful Hickory Nut Gorge, just a stone’s throw from the eastern shores of Lake Lure. A plethora of natural vegetation and sky-scraping tree lines almost mimic the feeling of sailing though a rain forest. Each zipline in the adventure tour are designed with exhilarating features including Zip Zilla which is over 1000 feet long and engineered for speed. It’s pure adrenaline!
Canopy Ridge Farm is now in its fourth year. John Wagner who is also the founder of Lake Lure Adventure Company designed the park to be exciting and “fun for the whole family.” To date the youngest rider is three and the oldest eighty-four. “You’d be surprised how many people with a fear of heights have taken the tour,” explains Wagner. “The fear factor is quickly silenced by the sheer fun and adrenaline rush you get after stepping off that first platform.” The guides are there to support you all the way through.
This year Canopy Ridge Farm will also offer paddle tours on the beautiful lower Rocky Broad River. It’s a great trip for beginners and children, or anyone seeking a relaxing river trip. In this section of the river, the flows are gentle with some white water and several fast moving shoals. All of the tours are professionally guided.
Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge are quickly becoming a well-known destination for first-class fun with exciting outdoor activity and adventure.
It can easily be found at Canopy Ridge Farm welcoming guests March through November.

– In any of the lake’s coves
– Within 75 feet from shore
– Within 75 feet of other boats
– Within 100 feet of a public safety boat while emergency lights are in use
– No wake is also required from 7 pm to 7 am October through April and from 9 pm to 7 am from May through September.
• We’re very proud of our lake. Please don’t
litter or feed the geese and other waterfowl.
Neither are good for the birds or the lake.
• Only two people at a time can be towed
behind any boat and both must wear, you
guessed it, a PFD.

“personal flotation device.”
• Only beer and wine are allowed on your boat.
No fortified wine or spirituous liquors. All NC

However, local water skiing services are
available. Once your boat is underway, every-
one must stay inside the boat and its railings.
• Remember to use your docking lights only
while docking your boat.
• For the safety of everyone, no swimming
from town owned land or in the Washburn
Marina Bay.

The significant costs associated with operating Lake Lure, including dredging costs, are covered by lake-specific revenues from boat permit fees, tour concessions and fines. General property taxes are not used in lake operations. Although all citizens and property owners benefit from the lake’s beauty and value, the direct costs are borne by those who use it.

Just a few minutes away from Lake Lure is an estate vineyard and winery where visitors can step back in time 300 years. At the Russian Chapel Hills Winery in Green Creek area, owner Andrey Medvedev tends 20 acres of grapes of different
varieties. A native of the Moscow region who moved to North Carolina a few years ago, Andrey has followed his dream to make North Carolina wine as good as the
famous Californian vintners from the Russian River Valley, where his Russian ancestors settled and began cultivating grapes in the 1800s.
Here’s how Andrey tells the story:“I teamed up with locally renowned winemaker Jay Adams, whose career was spent as a geneticist with the National Institutes of Health, and who has extensive experi-ence in winemaking and brewing. We have the same vision and share the same goal
to make a great wine. As proprietors of an estate vineyard, we use only our own grapes. This allows us to control the quality from the vine’s bud break to the sort-ing table. Only the highest quality fruits are chosen for the production of Russian Chapel Hills Winery wines. Visitors are invited to sample Medvedev and Adams
delicious results in the Russian Chapel Hills Winery tasting room. We offer tastings of local North Carolina cheeses and create your ideal pair with wine and cheese.
Also, the Russian Chapel Hills winery is carrying Karma wines from Rioja, Spain. We are the exclusive importer of our partner’s Bodegas Antonio Alcaraz wine, who
produced the classical Rioja “Tempranillo” as well as exceptional “Viura”. You cannot buy it anywhere else in America except at Russian Chapel Hills Winery. Visitors to Russian Chapel Hills Winery will perhaps be most delighted at being
able to visit an authentic, 17th century style Russian chapel. The chapel is not just a tourist draw attraction to us. Prayer services are held regularly at St. Anna Chapel, which is part of the Eastern Diocese of the Russian Church outside of Russia. It is our heritage that such steps are taken, continuing in the footsteps of our ancestors
who have built the beautiful churches around the world for hundreds of years.
Much as the pioneers who settled the Russian River Valley, we hope God will bless a world class wine-making operation here, in the shadow of the
Great Smoky Mountains, just south of Lake Lure. You are welcome to come and join us in our estate winery.”

Wineries of Polk County Many people have no idea of Tryon's rich viticultural history. Over 100 years
ago, one of the most famous viticulturists from France recognized this.
In the 1860's, Jacque Alexus Lemort was brought over from France by George Washington Biltmore to the Biltmore Estate where viticulture proved unsuccessful. By 1865, Lemort had made his way to the Tryon Foothills and
discovered that with the more temperate climate, good drainage and better air circulation, grapes would thrive. That year, commercial cultivation began
and Lemort, known as "A.J.", remained in Western North Carolina until his death in 1916. In fact, he is buried in the Tryon cemetery.
Starting in the 1890's, the "Tryon Grape" was sold to passengers on trains that came through the Tryon Depot. Between the months of July and
August, "Tryon Grapes, Tryon Grapes, Tryon Grapes" was a cry that was echoed around the railway station as trains passed through. This quaint
custom continued until the mid- 1940's making Tryon and grapes as synonymous as Milwaukee and beer.
In 1926 and 1927, the Tryon grapes were shipped to New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Charlotte. Over the following years, the fame of the "Tryon Grapes" spread far and wide. At one time as many as 10 passenger trains a day came through Tryon, 5 northbound and 5 southbound from Chicago to Charleston. At first, the Carolina Special train did not stop but, as the story goes, the people of Tryon flagged it down, served everyone on board some of Mr. Lemort's famous wine and immediately became a favored stop until
its last run in 1968. One Tryonite was thrilled to find the "Tryon Grapes" even listed on the menu of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
Many other historical vineyards paved the way for our current vintner's. Today, the Tryon Foothills of Polk County is proud to have approximately 20
local vineyards and 4 operational wineries with more on the way.

In 1902, Dr. Lucius B. Morse and his brothers Hiram and Asahel purchased 64 acres (0.26 km2) around Chimney Rock (within present-day Chimney Rock State Park) for $5,000. They later acquired enough land in the area to bring the total to 8,000 acres (32 km2). Lucius Morse’s wife Elizabeth is credited with naming the lake (and the town).
In 1925, the Morse family created Carolina Mountain Power Company and funded the construction of a dam on the Broad River (through a mortgage) which produced the lake after which the town is named. The full impoundment of Lake Lure was completed in 1927. At ordinary water levels, Lake Lure covers approximately 720 acres (2.9 km2) and has a shoreline of approximately 27 miles (43 km). The dam’s power plant began operations in 1928 with the sale of electricity under a 10-year contract to Blue Ridge Power Co., a local predecessor of Duke Power.
The plans for development came to a halt in 1929 with the advent of the Great Depression. A mortgage-holder, Stroud & Company of Philadelphia, foreclosed on the lake and the dam. Stroud owned them and the power the dam generated until 1965. In 1963 the North Carolina General Assembly enacted the legislation that authorized the Town of Lake Lure to issue revenue bonds for the purpose of acquiring the assets from Stroud. The dam, power company, and real estate of Lake Lure were acquired by the Town of Lake Lure in 1965. In modern times, the town continues to sell electricity to Duke Energy, although profits from the dam now come second to maintaining a fixed water level year-round for the residents of the Lake Lure area.
The Lake Lure area is commonly used as a filming location for major motion pictures. Films include My Fellow Americans a 1996 comedy-drama starring Jack Lemmon and James Garner, and Dirty Dancing starring Patrick Swayze which was filmed here (the dance scenes at the Lodge) and in Virginia. It is also a common recreational area for residents and those within 100 miles (160 km) of the Lake from four states to come visit, picnic, water ski, boat and fish or spend the summer.
Lake Lure was the location for the HGTV Dream Home contest in 2006 where a lucky contestant won a furnished home and an automobile.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Lake HomeBuying a lake home is more affordable than ever. Steady market values, brisk Buyer activity and low interest rates make buying a lake home an attractive investment.
Questions to Ask• Is the lake managed by a Utility company, Corp of Engineers or Privately? Lake Lure is managed by the Town; one of only 2 privately managed lakes in WNC. • Who determines lake levels? Check boat traffic, boat size, motor and use restrictions. • How busy is the lake on weekends? How noisy is the lake on weekends and nights?• House location: Do you prefer main channel, long views or quiet swimming coves?• Will there be morning or afternoon sun? • What is water quality at the property?• How does the property run into the water? The slope generally continues into the water. Level lots generally mean shallower water at the shore while steeper lots indicate deeper water close to your property. Walk to the lake and take in the view, proximity of the house to the water, boathouse and sundeck. • What is the pier appeal of the house? Your lakefront IS your front door. • Will I be allowed to upgrade, enlarge or improve the property? • Is there a survey? It is imperative to know what you’re buying. I highly recommend buyers update and record a survey. • Is the home connected to public water system, private or shared well? • Is the home served by public sewer or a septic system? • Is there a current septic permit? • Is there a Homeowners Association? What are rules, amenities and benefits? Be sure to review Deed Restrictions and Covenants.
Ask your agent the age of home, the lot value, personal property to convey with purchase, how long has the property been listed, and what is the “fair market value”. Determine what the property is worth to you, then make an Offer.
Savvy buyers research the market, property values, locations and personal lifestyle choices in order to make the best choice for their property investment.

There’s something new happening behind Ingles.
Behind Ingles is a beautiful lake and retreat center called Mystic Waters. In 2011, local residents Russ and Lynn Pitts bought the former camp because they loved the land and the lake. Lynn Pitts, known professionally as Lynn Carnes has run her own leadership development business since moving to Lake Lure in 2000. With the purchase of Mystic Waters, she developed a vision for a retreat center that would allow her to stay home more and allow her clients to truly get away from their intense workloads. In 2013, Lynn Carnes and Susan Robertson held their first open enrollment program called The Freedom to Lead. This program is designed to unleash the full potential of senior women leaders and had a dramatic impact on the lives and careers of the women who attended in last year. Group meetings almost always include a visit to Larkin’s for a dinner and a view of Lake Lure. “We love introducing people to this amazing land and the community. Being able to work with people in this kind of setting is so meaningful,” says Lynn. So the old saying may be true. “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
