THE BOSSES SPEAKJohn Stuart is an executive recruitment specialist who has turned to wri ng. The result is this

book, based on interviews with twenty Chief Executives.

Each top manager - none of them famous names, surprisingly - is giv n a short chapter, and

there is some introductory material and a conclusion. This means yo can jump from one

person to another, in any order, which is good for people who are to busy to read a book

from cover to cover. For a management book it isn't expensive, altho gh whether it's good

value for money is doubtful.

Some of the twenty interviewees started their own businesses, while ot ers joined a company

and worked their way up. Some are fairly new in their position, and ot ers have had years of

experience, though, strangely, Stuart doesn't seem interested in t se differences. The

interviewees work in everything, from retailing to airlines to software and it is this variety

that forms the main theme of Stuart's book.

I have to say that Stuart's approach annoys me. He rarely stays at a distance from his

interviewees, who are mostly presented in their own, positive words. I this were always the

case, at least you wou d know where you were. But he seems to dislike certain interviewees.

As a result, I don't kn w whether to accept any of his opinions.

It also means that the ook gives no clear lessons. At the very least, I expected to learn what

makes a successful C ief Executive. But these people seem to share two types of qualities.

Some of them are ver common, suggesting that anyone can be equally successful, which is

definitely not the cas . And the other qualities are ones which most successful bosses I've

seen definitely do not ave. So in the end I'm no wiser about what really goes on.

Perhaps I'm being u fair. As long as you don't think about whether you'd like them as

friends, and pay no at ntion to most of the advice they give, the most readable parts

are where the bosses escribe their route to their present position.

Stuart seems to think hat his book would be useful for people aiming for the top, and that it

might even make a ~ want to start their own company; but, in fact, what they could learn

here is very limited. een as light business reading for a doctor or teacher, though, this book

would provide some od entertainment.

Every organisation has its share of employees-from-hell: the lazy, dtluded, hypochondriac

underperformers. They are difficult to manage and miserable to work ",ith. Their productivity

is low and their ability to poison staff morale high. They are, alas, always well-entrenched

and management-resistant. Interestingly, their numbers in any organisttion have more to do

with management's refusal to deal with the situation than with poor $lection. That is, their

existence in the organisation is nearly always due to a long line of weolk managers who have

declined to tackle the Problem.'!

Traditionally, there are three classic ineffective ways of dealing with! the incompetent The

first is to ignore the problem, hoping that it will go away. Rather thar confront laziness or

serious absenteeism, the manager gives the employee less work to do. ~his inevitably leads to

frustration on the part of the good hardworking staff who see the pro~lem employee getting

away with it. The second approach, which has traditionally been the in~st favoured, is to pass

them on.

There is usually a part of any business where people believe the poo~ performer can do no

damage. Alternatively, poor performers can be moved to another bran~h in the dreariest part

of town, or to another town, or even to another country. A clever varifmt of this tactic is to

herd all the incompetent employees into one part of the company th~t is then sold off or

privatised.II

There is a third approach which is to promote the incompetent. Thf sounds bizarre andexceedingly stupid but is not infrequently adopted. The idea is that, altf10ugh these posts are

"quite senior and well-paid, the actual jobs are fairly pointless ones ib which incompetentI

people can hide without doing any serious damage. The employee is th*s confirmed in his or

her delusions of competence. All three of these strategies are the result cf not dealing with theII

problem early on. Many managers find dealing with incompelenc~ very difficult. The

scenario that all managers hate is as follows: show a subordinate . low mark on their

appraisal form. The employee first wants the behaviour defined; then ~ants an example of

when this behaviour occurred; then argues about how this incident occ>lrred and how typical

it was. The net result is a row about the past and frustration on the part of both.

life cycle. This is a historical record of the life of a product, showing fIte stage in its life the

The main topic of last eek's meeting was suggestion boxes. All departments in the factory are to have

conspicuously labeled s ggestion boxes. At the meeting, it was obvious that the employees' suggestions

would not only save the company money, but would do much to lift morale and streamline production. To

further this process, the uggestion box idea was adopted.

Forms for the suggesti ns are to be kept inside the box. When employees fill out a form, they should

clearly state which situ tion they are trying to improve, list all pertinent data, and then offer a solution,

heads, who will then p s them on to the plant manager. Where necessary, the plant manager will consult
