Sunbathing is not a good idea for mature skin that has already sustained a lifetime of damage from the sun’s UV rays. Tanning and sunburns greatly increase your risk for skin cancer. 2. Pick Shade over Sun Whether you’re at home or out walking, you can prevent sun damage to elderly skin by staying in shady corridors or porches, especially during the hottest part of the day. 3. Apply Sunscreen Daily Sunscreen is the most powerful skin care product you can use to protect aging skin. Dermatologists recommend that you apply an SPF 30 formula to exposed skin daily, whether you’ll be indoors or out. Sunscreen of this strength is scientifically proven to absorb 97% of harmful UV rays, which are able to pass through clouds and glass. Reapply sunscreen after sweating or showering and use it liberally. 4. Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories Hats and sunglasses are a must! The sun can make some people’s skin overly sensitive, especially if you are taking medications such as antibiotics, water pills, anti-depressants and antipsychotics. Summer Skin Precautions for Seniors

Finally we have some nice weather! What a long winter it’s been! But, we all have to be

careful because although the sun is great, we need to be cautious. Here are some helpful

tips:

1. Don’t Tan and Don’t Burn

Sit under a sun shade or umbrella when accessible. Sunbathing is not a good idea for

mature skin that has already sustained a lifetime of damage from the sun’s UV rays.

Tanning and sunburns greatly increase your risk for skin cancer.

2. Pick Shade over Sun

Whether you’re at home or out walking, you can prevent sun damage to elderly skin by

staying in shady corridors or porches, especially during the hottest part of the day.

3. Apply Sunscreen Daily

Sunscreen is the most powerful skin care product you can use to protect aging skin.

Dermatologists recommend that you apply an SPF 30 formula to exposed skin daily,

whether you’ll be indoors or out. Sunscreen of this strength is scientifically proven to

absorb 97% of harmful UV rays, which are able to pass through clouds and glass. Reapply

sunscreen after sweating or showering and use it liberally.

4. Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories

Hats and sunglasses are a must! The sun can make some people’s skin overly sensitive,

especially if you are taking medications such as antibiotics, water pills, anti-depressants and

antipsychotics.

And most importantly, ALWAYS drink lots of water - especially if you are outside in the hot

weather!
