GSC Life Member, Tamson Carter

It was with great sadness that the GSC advised our members of the passing of Tam (Tamson) Carter, GSC Life Member since 1984. Tam passed away peacefully on October 19. The GSC sent our deepest sympathies to Ann Benseman and her family.

Tam contributed so much to swimming. Without the support and dedication from people such as Tam swimming would not be the sport it is today. Tam helped to grow and develop swimming in the Bay of Plenty and we are grateful for her time and efforts. She lived a quiet life and gave much to swimming and her community and asked for nothing in return. Tam was a founding member of the Greerton Swimming Club and was made a life member of the Greerton Swimming Club in 1984. Tam fulfilled many roles at Club level, more significantly, coach and official. Tam was a qualified Referee and was recognised with a Swimming Bay of Plenty Service Award in 1977 followed by honors in 1992. She received a Swimming New Zealand Service Award in 1997 and was made a life member of Swimming Bay of Plenty in 2000. Tam loved being involved in her community and was part of the IHC’s volunteer friendship programme and the Meals on Wheels service. Tam will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

TECT Scholarship at UoW Adams centre for High Performance

Congratulations to our senior swimmers that completed their 16 week TECT Scholarship programme provided by the UoW Adams Centre for High Performance.

The team had some outstanding overall achievements over the 16-week period: 21% increase in flexibility, 22% increase in strength, 47% increase in core and 11.5% increase in strength. The GSC Board and our GSC members are very proud of all of your achievements and commitment to the programme. A big shout out to Ella Browne, who was the only athlete to achieve 100%

attendance. Whoop Whoop. 👏 👏

A big thank you must go to the UoW Adams Centre for High Performance Team - Daniel, Cory, Kerry, Gabriela, Justine, Flo and Hayley. Our swimmers have been very fortunate to have such expertise and support looking after them. Thank you to TECT for subsidising this scholarship programme for our swimmers.

The GSC Board is very proud to announce that 12 of our Gold Group swimmers have been selected for the next round of training under the TECT scholarship programme. This will be for a period of 6 months. We look forward to seeing the teams’ achievements in April 2018.

Whakatane Junior Swim Meet, 11th November

Thank you to the Whakatane Swimming Club for hosting their junior meet and to all the officials, time keepers and people that helped run the meet. Our junior GSC team had a ball. A big thank you to Jen and Amanda for Team Managing and to Riccardo for overseeing our swimmers. There were some great PB’s posted at the event. Here are some photos of the team in action.

Well done to our senior swimmers that competed at this meet. It was the first chance for our swimmers to swim in a long course pool. Waterworld (Te Rapa) did not disappoint with some great PB’s from our swimmers. Congratulations to Talitha McEwan who took a massive 38secs off the BOP 1500m LC record. The new, yet to be ratified record is 19:52.20 for 11 year old girls.

UPCOMING BOARD VACANCIES:

Next year we have 3 positions that need to be filled by exiting Board members at our 2018 AGM. It would be great to get new people trained in these roles before the AGM in May. If you are interested in any of the following roles please contact the members in these roles to find out more. GSC Secretary, Paula Farrell. Answering emails, recording minutes, clearing mail, FB, newsletters etc. [email protected]

Grant Officer, Wendy Bradley. Wendy wants to train someone up in the New Year. There are grants to apply for in late Jan/early Feb. If you would like to have fees for away camps/competitions etc continued to be subsidised/reduced for your swimmer/s then please come forward. The processes are simple, all data is centralised, you are really only filling out a form using existing data and ensuring you are meeting key deadlines. Contact Wendy via [email protected]

Officials Convener, Pauline Happe. Pauline is responsible for organising all of our GSC helpers for meets – Time Keepers, Team Managers etc. Pauline would like to train someone in this role in the new year.

Code of Conduct of GSC Swimmers:

A reminder to all of our swimmers and parents of the code of conduct we expect of our swimmers when they are involved in GSC activities which include travelling away to meets. At all times swimmers must:

Refrain from any form of abuse, harassment, discrimination and victimization towards others

Provide a safe environment for swimming and travelling with members of the GSC.

Be a positive role model.

Respect that the coaches and managers are responsible for the well-being of all team members and will make decisions for the good of the team.

IOTS, Starters, JOS and Referees

Swim BOP recently highlighted at their AGM the limited number of Technical Officials available within the region. It would be great for the GSC and BOP region if we could have some more parents looking to train as an IOT (Inspector of Turns), Starter, JOS (Judge of Strokes) and Referees. If you are interested please talk to any of the GSC IOT’s, who will be happy and able to tell you the process that is followed and how we can get you trained up and qualified. Everyone starts as a Time Keeper and then progresses through the technical officials.

A reminder to all of our Timekeepers and IOT’s. If you volunteer to time-keep or IOT at a meet, please ensure you wear your white GSC polo shirt. We are very proud of our Club and our volunteers. Please wear your club shirt so we look united and professional. If you need a shirt, please contact Janine Browne at [email protected]

We are still looking for any parents that may be interested in learning how to run the AOD system (touch pads) and the Meet Manager system (computer operator of the results). Please contact Michael, Paula or Pauline if you are keen.
