SWEET 16!Welcome to our 16th Annual Shadows of the Mind Film Festival!

This has been an exciting (and busy) year for us at Shadows. We purchased anew screen and HD projector through a generous grant from the Ontario TrilliumFoundation. We are delighted with the result and invite you to join us at theGrand Theatre for a unique and quality cinematic experience.

We also would like to acknowledge and thank Annette Katamajaki who resignedfrom Shadows last year, after 15 years of service.

This year’s lineup includes a new partnership with the Sault College Digital FilmProgram in the selection of an amazingly diverse screening of short films. Checkout Reel Northern Flicks on the 28th! We plan to make this an annual event!

Filmed in the Sault... Screened in the Sault is back again and this year we areproud to present two titles. Filmmaker, Terrance Odette will be here to bring Fall(nominated for 5 Canadian Screen Awards) to a local audience and Producer;Cliff McDowell will be in town to join moviegoers at the screening of his film,The Masked Saint.

Our dedicated volunteer committee has worked hard to secure a selection ofaward winning features and documentaries, some, followed up by paneldiscussions to instigate reflection, conversation and connection amongstmoviegoers. We really do believe “one movie can change you!”

As always the Festival would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, friends, volunteers, staff and you, the audience member.

See you at our Sweet 16th!

Bill MacPherson and Gary Huntley - Co-directors

Bipolarized: Rethinking Mental Illness66 min., Canada 2014, English, Documentary - Rated: PG

Directed by: Rita KotziaBIPOLARIZED is about one man’s personal journeyto heal. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Ross’psychiatrist told him he would live with the disorderfor the rest of his life and that he would have to takelithium to control symptoms. To Ross, taking the drug

daily felt like a chemical lobotomy, leaving him in a foggy, drug-induced haze.Ross ultimately decided to resolve his symptoms outside of conventionalmedicine. He progressively reduced his use of the psychotropic drug lithium,at an experimental clinic in Costa Rica. What ensued was a self-explorationinto alternative treatments to treat his condition and a journey delving into theroot cause of his mental breakdown. The film uses Ross’ personal experiences to tell a larger story about medication. It will reveal how we are labelling more and more people with mental illnessesand how, in tandem, we are prescribing more and more toxic psychotropic drugsto treat these illnesses. BIPOLARIZED weaves together a series of interviewswith activists, psychiatrists and other psychiatric survivors who have challengedthe status quo as well as recounts some of the alternative therapies Ross usesto maintain his mental, emotional and physical health.Join us for a conversation with Ross McKenzie of Bipolarized (skype)
