To address the needs of today’s society and the expanding aging population, NEIT will offer its first- ever doctoral program – the Post-Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (PP-OTD). This program is designed for registered occupational therapists who wish to expand their academic and clinical experience and become advanced practitioners promoting health, wellness and participation across many populations and groups. The program is also well suited for registered occupational therapists seeking a new role in academia or research. The PP-OTD program represents a major milestone in NEIT’s continued academic growth as a university. NEIT ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST DOCTORAL DEGREE The fully online format of the PP-OTD program allows students to study at their convenience. What made you decide to attend NEIT? I knew NEIT would be a good start to my education after high school. My first tour of the Post Road campus in Warwick had me hooked. Also, I was fortunate enough to have been awarded scholarships to NEIT which afforded me the opportunity to continue my education at a reasonable cost. At the time I attended, NEIT only had an associate degree program in Architecture. Why did you choose your program? From an early age I always wanted to be an architect. I can remember back as early as 4 th or 5 th grade drawing house plans on lined notebook paper and rolling them up in my desk. In high school, I took three years of architec- tural drafting. That led me to look towards programs at NEIT to further my aspirations. What did you do to get started with your career? NEIT’s Career Services Office was instru- mental in getting me started with my career. The staff provided me with three companies to send my resume to that were looking for NEIT grads. I sent my resume to all three employers and Dennis DiPrete, President of DiPrete Engineering, called the next day -- 25+ years later and I still enjoy what I do! Tell us about your current position. DiPrete Engineering is a civil engineering, land surveying, and land planning firm that does work throughout southern New England. My current position is leading the firm’s day-to-day operations. This includes work- ing hand-in-hand with our project managers to deliver high quality projects that meet our clients’ high expectations. We have more than 50 engineers, surveyors, planners and designers that work on hundreds of projects a month, so there really isn’t a dull moment. In addition, I also work with other senior leaders of the firm to ensure our growth throughout the region. When I started at the firm, there were less than ten employees, so we are always in a growth mode. I also serve as the firm’s land planning expert. I am a Certified Land Planner and get the opportunity to work on the early stages of projects -- the most creative part of my job, in my opinion. My task is to plan the best use of a property that meets regulatory requirements as well as provides a viable development for our clients. I was lucky enough to be involved in the NEIT East Greenwich campus planning from inception, including a 100-year campus plan. It’s exciting to see the vision I was a part of come to fruition. What do you feel ultimately prepared you for your position? I have had the opportunity to work on hundreds of projects and with many clients. The firm has given me the opportunity to complete virtually every task that is possible at a civil engineering firm – from field survey to engineering design to public presentations. This foundation was paramount. Ultimately, however, I believe it was the great mentors who prepared me for my position. Dennis DiPrete always made sure I knew the reason for doing something. We also have a great team, many of whom have been here longer than me, and have always been there to lend advice and assistance. Do you have any advice for graduates who are just beginning their job search? It’s a very exciting time to be looking to start a career. There are so many challenging and ever evolving fields. My advice would be to keep an open mind. Students should research jobs that may be slightly different than their chosen degree but as equally rewarding. I started out at NEIT thinking I would be an architect and ended up working for a civil engineering firm, tangential, but it still gave me the opportunity to utilize my degree. I would also suggest where possible that students strive to get an internship. It’s im- portant to get that applied experience to go hand-in-hand with their studies. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field? So much of what we do is computer-based. We utilize Autodesk products as our primary “tool” to complete our work. Here at DiPrete we usually say it takes about a year for the light bulb to turn on for a new employee out of school mainly because we are training on AutoCAD as well as engineering. If grads can come in with relevant CAD skills, they will be way ahead of the game. Second, I would say master strong public speaking skills. It is extremely important to be comfortable speak- ing in a collaborative office environment as well as at public meetings or with clients. Greg Guglielmo, AICP, LEED AP, was recently promoted to Executive Vice Presi- dent of DiPrete Engineering in Cranston, RI. He graduated from New England Tech in 1992 with an Associate in Science de- gree in Architectural Drafting Technology. Through an internship from NEIT’s Career Services Office, Greg is proud to say that he has been with DiPrete Engineering for more than 25 years. Greg shares great words of advice. What sets New England Tech’s program apart from other PP-OTD programs is (a) that it can be completed fully online in as little as 12 months (if students enroll on a full-time basis) and (b) that it does not have a residency requirement. Competitive occupational therapy doctorate programs can take between 18-24 months thus making NEIT’s program one of the short- est programs in the United States. Students also may focus their doctoral project in the area of practice that interests them the most. Students, both full-time and part-time, will partici- pate in an engaging and highly supportive fully-online learning environment throughout successive ten-week academic terms, with the flexibility to study while balanc- ing work and personal schedules. The program focuses on the completion of an individualized doctoral project on a very specific area of practice that the student chooses to explore. At the core of this program is the doctoral project that offers students the opportunity to utilize their unique background and knowledge and pair it with the expertise of a chosen mentor, NEIT’s accomplished faculty and the collective experience of classmates. The PP-OTD program is designed to accommodate the schedules of working practitioners who have previously earned their master’s degree in occupational therapy and achieved certification status to practice as an occu- pational therapist by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). “Doctoral degrees are intended to expand the knowledge of practioners in their chosen profession by allowing post-professional doctoral students a chance to engage in rigorous inquiry in a given area of prac- tice,” stated Professor Carol Doehler, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA, Department Chair and Program Director. “The PP-OTD degree is crafted to meet the individualized goals of post-professional doctoral students. Its design makes this program unique to those students who wish to enhance their practice, advance their knowledge and develop further skills necessary for their professional development.” For more information on the Post-Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program, contact Lynn Fawthrop by phone at 800-736-7744 ext. 3315, by email at [email protected] or by visiting the website at https://www.neit.edu/Programs/Online-and-Hybrid-Degree-Programs/Post-Professional-Doctorate-of- Occupational-Therapy.

A Message fromPresident

Richard I. GouseGreetings to All,

New England Institute of Technology is proud to announce that it will now offer its first doctoral program. The new Post-Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy will provide master’s level oc-cupational therapists with the advanced knowledge and skills required to answer the needs of today’s society as well as the growing senior population. NEIT’s faculty and staff have collaborated ex-tensively on the fully-online curriculum making it possible for practitioners from anywhere in the world to enroll in this exceptional program.

The NEIT community joins me in congratulating several students who were recognized for their creativity, knowledge and skill at industry-related competitions held in June. Four students earned silver medals and one student was recognized as a major competitor in their respective technical programs at the SkillsUSA national competition. An interior design student and her teammates from across the country won first place at the 2018 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Student Design competition. NEIT’s focus on experiential learning becomes all the more evident as the accomplishments of these students are recognized.

A special thank you is extended to the many sponsors, players, donors, golf committee members and volunteers who all played a significant role in the suc-cess of the 9th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament held at the Warwick Country Club in June. The proceeds from this tournament will fund scholarships and textbook purchases for students in need of financial assistance to complete their degree. On behalf of these students, my sincere thanks to all.

Our university continues to thrive, and we welcome prospective students and their families to tour our campuses and learn about our more than 50 associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate and online degree programs. I invite you to stop by one of our upcoming Tech Nite open houses or contact our Admissions Office (800-736-7744) to schedule a tour. We look forward to seeing you on campus.

NEIT Students Take Top Honors at 2018 SkillsUSA Championships

Interior Design Student Earns

National Recognition neIT InTerIOr DesIgn Technology student Stephanie McShane, who served as a member of a national student team, was awarded the

“People’s Choice Award” at the 2018 International Interior Design Associa-tion (IIDA) Student Design Charrette at the annual NeoCon conference held at The Mart in Chicago on June 12. NeoCon is the world’s leading platform and most

important event of the year for the commercial design industry. It provides the perfect setting for emerging professionals and students from around the world to see the latest products and innovations as well as the opportunity for networking and continuing education.

Stephanie secured her participation at the national event as a top five finalist at the annual New England Chapter of the IIDA 2018 Design Awards held this spring. At the national char-rette, which is an intense collaborative session in which a group of designers draft a solution to a design problem within a limited time frame for presentation, Stephanie was placed on a team with students from the University of North Texas, Art Institute of Pittsbugh-Online, San Diego Mesa College and Kansas State University to compete against other teams.

The teams of five students were given six hours to determine a design solution, develop a presentation and pitch their concept to a panel of well-respected judges. They were given specific deliverables that must be provided in the presentation along with a few supplies for visual representation.

NeoCon has evolved into an international design hub that brings together more than 50,000 industry professionals for networking opportunities as well as dynamic and diverse learning experiences. Congratulations to Stephanie and her fellow teammates for earn-ing the IIDA’s prestigious People’s Choice Award and representing NEIT’s Interior Design Technology program so well.

Sposato, visited Camp Fogarty in East Green-wich to evaluate the materials, machinery and procedures currently being utilized at the base and to discuss training outcomes.

Based on this information, the CTI team developed a curriculum that provided special-ized training for the RIANG personnel. During the two 40-hour per week training sessions, the soldiers spent the first week working in the machining lab followed by a week of welding instruction. Although some of the military personnel had basic knowledge of welding and machining having worked in the maintenance and transportation areas at the base, the goal was to teach all the soldiers the proper techniques to use with the materials and machinery available to them in the field.

The RIANG personnel were impressed with the hands-on, customized training they received and the wealth of information their instructors, Henry and Todd, shared with them. Some of their comments included: (1) The instructors and classes were great, and we learned a lot in a short period of time. (2) Training was right on key and relevant. (3) Great blocks of instruction with tips and tricks that were very helpful. (4) I couldn’t ask for a better program because it gave me greater confidence.

Aaron d’Haiti and Nancy Starr

Electrical Engineering Student Makes Music!

nancy sTarr, an adjunct faculty member at NEIT, teaches “Introduction to Applied Music”, a course in music fundamentals and beginning keyboard skills as well as the study of compos-ers, musicians and inventors important to the keyboard. One of the inventions discussed is the theremin, the first electronic instrument developed around 1920 by Leon Theremin, a Russian physicist. The instrument produces and alters sound through two antennas and the sounds can be manipulated by hand motion.

For years, Nancy has challenged her students to build her a theremin. One of her students, Aaron d’Haiti, an electrical engineer-ing student, is described by Nancy as quiet and polite with an unexpected dry sense of humor. Aaron attempted to build the theremin as one of his projects last year but for various reasons he was unable to do so. For at least a year, each time Aaron passed by Nancy’s classroom, he would wave and promise her that the instru-ment was in the works. Towards the end of last quarter, Aaron announced that the theremin was finally completed! Through the assistance of the Electrical Engineering department, Aaron produced a small, totally functional theremin.

As Nancy stated, “I can’t thank Aaron enough for persevering with this project long after he left my class and providing NEIT students and myself with the chance to actu-ally experiment with this instrument that is so crucial to the development of electronic instruments including the synthesizer. I invite folks to stop by S338 to experiment with this amazing instrument.”

DEAN’S LISTThe following students have achieved academic excellence for the quarter ending June 2, 2018. These full-time students have been placed on the Dean’s List for achieving a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a maximum scale of 4.0. Congratulations to all!

The newly renOvaTeD Assessment and Placement Lab in the Academic Skills Center on the first floor of the East Greenwich cam-pus is certainly welcoming to new NEIT stu-dents. As incoming students make their way through the admissions process, assessment and placement can sometimes be the most challenging task of all. Recognizing that the Assessment Lab is part of the overall first impression of the university, steps have been taken to transform the space to make it more functional and appealing to students.

Renovation plans included improvement of the aesthetics, as well as investing in equip-ment that sets the proper tone. The space has evolved from several round tables with multiple computers per table, to sleek, new study carrels complete with sound blocking headphones should the student wish to use them. The deep blue wall is soothing for those students who are anxious when taking an assessment.

“It is important that the Assessment Lab provides students with the opportunity to focus on their tasks while at the same time helps students feel more comfortable,” said Bridget Dessaint, Assessment and Placement Coordinator. “The new desks and layout foster concentration and make monitoring the testing process a lot easier.”

Stop by the Academic Skills Center to see the new lab. NEIT continues to strive to ensure that students have a positive experience. The new space will make a lasting impression.

NEIT participates in “Health in All Policies” Conference

ThIs pasT may, students and faculty from NEIT’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program were co-sponsors and key participants at the “Health in All Policies” conference, which was held at the Rhode Island State House in Providence.

Organized by the Rhode Island Public Health Institute and sponsored by local colleges and universi-ties, the conference was deemed a great success. Students presented posters displaying work that could advance health policy in areas such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, LGBTQ, oral hygiene and others. NEIT Master of Public Health student, Deborah Faith, exhibited work on lead poisoning along with Video Game Design student, Ben Gordon, whose work focused on physical activity. Other NEIT students in attendance to show their support of public health were George Fandoscia III and Syntyche Mashamba. Magali Angeloni, Master of Public Health Program Director, presented student awards.

New England Tech, as well as other local colleges and universities, will once again join the Rhode Island Public Health Institute and the Rhode Island Public Health Association to organize future student events that promote health policy and statewide efforts to enrich education and foster networking among the students and faculty from all institutions.

Congratulations

On June 25, 2018, 116 golfers gathered at the prestigious Warwick Country Club for the 9th annual New England Tech Scholarship Golf Tournament. Thanks to the generosity of the players, event sponsors and donors, the tournament raised approximately $103,000 to benefit NEIT students. The success of this year’s golf tournament is attributed to the gen-erosity of all the participants along with a dedicated group of volunteers and as well as the Golf Committee who worked tirelessly to ensure a great event. Special thanks to the Balise Auto Group who provided a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta and other prizes for a hole-in-one on four of Warwick Country Club’s challenging par threes. Although no one won the car, a great time was had by all.

The support of the many generous sponsors, golfers and prize donors was outstanding again this year. The NEIT community extends its thanks to the following sponsors and donors:

Special thanks to the many prize donors that include: IHeart Media; classichassocks.com; Cathy Kennedy, NEIT Vice President of Student Support Services; Providence Performing Arts Center; Capital Grill; MSC Industrial Supply Company; Cat Country 98.1;

Attention Robotics Enthusiasts!

callIng all middle and high school students, educators, parents, mentors and volunteers who are interested in the STEM disciplines! You are invited to attend the 2018-2019 Rhode Island FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge Kick-Off on Saturday, September 8, 2018, to be held at New England Institute of Technology’s East Greenwich campus located at One New England Tech Blvd. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is the 13th season that New England Tech will serve as the host site for this high-energy competition.

Robotics teams from middle schools and high schools, civic groups, after school pro-grams and home school students will learn about the upcoming season, meet other team members and see the 2019 game model first-hand – Rover Ruckus, an out-of-this-world space-themed game. Teams are invited to bring their robots to try their skill at the new game. Groups interested in establishing a new team are also welcome to attend the kick-off as well. Check out https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/ftc/game-and-season for more game details.

Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to par-ticipate in FIRST®. More than 43 Rhode Island teams competed last season and learned how science and technology play a major role in the global economy while sharpening important life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication and teamwork.

Physical Therapist Assistant Students Are Learning by Doing

FOunDeD In 1999, the Rhode Island Free Clinic (RIFC), located in Providence, provides free, comprehensive medical care and preventive health services to Rhode Island’s working poor – low-income adults who are uninsured and can-not afford medical care. The clinic also provides the most efficient and cost effective alternative to emergency rooms for uninsured patients.

Because RIFC also serves as an educational training site for aspiring health care professionals, students from NEIT’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Technology program provide patient treatments at RIFC during their third quarter for the course entitled PTA141 “Service Learning and Clinical Seminar.” While at the clinic, students learn to provide physical therapy interventions to patients with neck or back pain, stroke, diabetes, rotator cuff tear, and arthritis under the supervision and assistance from New England Tech PTA faculty who are licensed PTs and PTAs in Rhode Island. Students also learn how to complete electronic medical records.

Students rotate through the clinic on Tuesday afternoons, Thursday evenings and Friday mornings so that patients have a variety of appointment times to fit their schedules. Some PTA students continue to volunteer at RIFC during the remainder of their degree program.

By partnering with the Rhode Island Free Clinic, PTA students are provid-ing an invaluable service to Rhode Islanders who cannot afford medical care while gaining valuable hands-on experience working in their field of study.
